- This film released the same year I was born! I've barely seen any movies made pre 1990's, but I'm glad I got to see this one. I remember hearing the title Rain Man mentioned here and there throughout my life, but never really got around to watching it.
The fact that I've barely seen Tom Cruise or Dustin Hoffman in movies makes this pretty neat to see. I think Tom Cruise did a really good job playing this character, and I'm looking forward to seeing him in more movies! Same with Dustin Hoffman, he did absolutely remarkable.

I think the character change in Charlie was great in how subtle and plausible it was. He was still kind of a prick at the end, and he and Raymond didn't go driving off into the sunset together. Raymond went back to the assisted living facility, and Raymond was just a *slightly* better person for the experience.
Charlie definitely became a better person and matured. I like his development, but I still don't like his traits and how he is. I'm also glad that they didn't drive off into the sunset!! It's actually a really good ending and great character development
Seeing how Raymond was able to change Charlie over the course of a week makes me wonder what Charlie would've been like if he hadn't lost Rain Man as a child. He probably would've been a completely different person. He's right to be upset that no one ever told him he had a brother.
Charlie could have definitely been a very different person had he had Rain Man in his life. It's good to see that he was able to change during that week though and that he formed a connection with his brother
I agree. He had the right to know he had a brother. Just simply stating "What would you have done if we did tell you?" Doesn't matter. He should still know.
I love how Charlie realized he can't hug his brother, but them putting their heads together was how they hug. It's so adorable.
I think a lot of people would be exactly like Charlie back then. We need to think of the times as a frame of reference when we look at some of his behaviors. Especially during that mediation scene. I think you kind of overreacted to him during that meeting ...just a bit. A lot of people would get flustered during something like that. Everything happening is completely new to him. And when the meeting started, he actually felt like he wanted to keep his brother close. And he thought the Doctor and the mediator were not giving Raymond enough credit for what he is capable of, relationship wise. He felt like both he and his brother were under attack, in a sense. Just my opinion, anyway
Exactly. The problem of millennials reacting to a lot of classic movies is they have no frame of reference on social progress in the last 30-40 years. Charlie is the quintessential 80s alpha male archetype - arrogantly self-serving, narcissistic and patronizing towards everyone in their life, especially the women and minorities. The lack of awareness and social stigma attached to autism and mental illness in the population was also the norm, not the exception, and the way Charlie behaved towards someone so abnormal like Raymond was every bit realistic every for an average person at the time, let alone an alpha male. If you simply look at Charlie from a 21st century lens (especially from a socially progressive feminist lens), it's easy to feel revulsion and lack of sympathy. If you study the culture and watch more movies from that time, you'd start to appreciate the accuracy in which Tom Cruise portrayed the character and the interactions with his brother. And you'd gain some more insight into the rather well constructed character arc without prejudice.
I agree, he was defensive because he already knew the outcome going in. He is not a bad person overall he was abandoned as a child emotionally.. his brother was his only source of emotional support, he blamed his father for a lot and he was suffering financially.. him and his business that he built on his own .. he needed the money or his life would fall apart so he was disparate. Also his devout of emotion was picked up from his father.. over all both Tom and Dustin performances were brilliant.. character development for Charlie was on point .. subtle and executed brilliantly. One of my top 10 movies…
One last thing I love about this movie is Hans zimmer, he gave this movie so much life and made the emotional scenes 10 times better.
Charlie had a point about the facility stifling Raymond. He managed to expand Raymond's world a lot and that is valuable for us on the spectrum.
Tom is the actor. Charlie is the character. It is a script.
I’m sure when Charlie’s character was written they emphasized his harshness based on his childhood. He never knew a mothers love and his father had a hard time showing him love. He apparently didn’t have the influence of grandparents either. Charlie became someone not easy to love.
Raymond revealing to Charlie he was Rain Man hit Charlie deeply. He finally realized his memories of someone singing to him and loving him was not imaginary. It was his older brother.
That’s what’s so beautiful about this story. Watching these two brothers reunite later in life.
Yes, it annoyed me when doctor asked what Charlie would have done with the information he had a brother. He probably would have visited even if he was prickish.
The scene where he kissed suzanna was such a sweet scene! How couldn’t u see it like that? Lol.
You've probably already been getting this, and I don't want to sound like I'm piling on, but you do have to put things in historical perspective. There was basically no awareness of autism back then, unless maybe you knew someone with it, but even then, there probably wasn't a meaningful way to properly identify it, and not many probably were diagnosed with it. This movie came out when I was ten, and it was the first that I'd ever heard of it. Granted, I was a child, but I'd bet that it was true of the majority of society as a whole, who first learned of it only after seeing this movie, and that a lot of older people's narrow understanding of autism is just what is portrayed in this film. Not that how we accept, understand, or deal with these types of issues is great now, but if you're younger, you probably have no idea of how bad it used to be. Basically if you didn't conform to societal standards, you were essentially shunned, and if possible, just removed from mainstream society as a whole, so as not to be an inconvenience to everyone else, and generally people preferred to be blissfully ignorant.
oh I completely understand that. Regarding autism, I understand it from the historical perspective. Even when I was younger it wasn't well understood if someone didn't conform to what was "normal". I've heard stories from my parents from when they were younger and can see just how much worse it was. Me growing up was WAY better but nowhere near where we're going in recent years. It's pretty crazy thinking about it, just how much society has changed in the last half a century, let alone a whole century ago
@@VerowakReacts well, I didn't include this before because I didn't want to be a bummer, and I don't know if this is what you were insinuating, but the amount of people that want it to be like that again are on the rise. Not all things have necessarily changed all that much. Some pretty crazy times right now, and are going to likely get worse going forward for at least the near future. I'm not trying to be a dick about it, but sometimes I feel like I'm in a position to bridge that gap for younger people, and maybe my insight might help them have a needed wider perspective for what they're likely to face
@@richiecabral3602 Oh it's not great atm, there's still a LOT that needs to be done, especially since there are those who want to basically go back to how terrible things were 50+ years ago. A lot of times the people in power are not what is needed for society to advance, sadly
It was a really good artistic choice to make Charlie a giant a**hole because it made us a empathize with Raymon even more, & the need to understand & treat with dignity those with autism was an important message at the time. It also served to emphasize Charlie's character arc.

Agreed. If Charlie was a nice and upstanding guy this would have been a boring movie. You need conflict in a movie. For example in that meeting with the Doctors at the end, if it wasn't confrontational and everyone was agreeable, it would have been a very boring resolution. The writers did a fantastic job. The characters, the dialogue, and the structure are fantastic.
This film changed my life. It gave me a huge leg up on the differences of people and how to respect everyone. Tom Cruise did an amazing job in this role and deserves respect

⛔️ Damn, I know Tom Cruise’s character starts off selfish but you don’t even have compassion that his father never told him he had a brother❓you say it doesn’t matter? Imagine Tom’s character growing up visiting Raymond at the hospital and learning about autism in an organic way. Would have been the loving connection he needed that his father could not provide.
You could have complained about Charlie a little bit more, just to help drive it home.
I'll try to keep that in mind next time. I was afraid my disdain for Charlie would have been missed by some

Hoffman was under consideration for Charlie, but read the script and fought for the Raymond character. The original casting made sense because he has some history of playing difficult or unlikeable characters. Other Hoffman movies I can recommend are The Graduate, Tootsie, Papillon and Midnight Cowboy.
I love Charlie in this movie ... because he reacts in a very realistic way ... He is not a saint, he's not evil ... he is just "normal", I guess, he's not perfect... I think he is in shock , in disbelief ... he's got problems too haha :) ... but it takes him like a week to understand his brother ...
I think the character is great, and definitely real. I just don't like the way he talks to people :D I love it when the characters are real, it makes the movie just that much better
Hey VErowak, I think you have to give Charlie a break after the middle of the movie. -------- Of course, we are meant to hate Charlie and his narcissistic approach to life. ------- WE also have to bear in mind that even a more sympathetic person deal with Raymond would become frustrated with in dealing with a person with autism. I'm sure I myself would have to take breaks to deal with the frustration in volved. ------ Plus back in 1988 when this was made few people knew about Autism. ------ Even the nurse in the movie has no idea what Charlie is talking about as he tries to get him admitted for review by the doctor. Overall a great movie.
I don't dislike Charlie only how he treats Raymond ... He treats him so much better in the second half, but he's still insufferable with everyone else he interacts with. I think it's sweet that he comes to know Raymond and love him and care for him. That doesn't mean he's no longer going to be disliked. He has other qualities I can't stand in a person 😂
Charlie is who he is because of his father, who it's heavily implied resented him and showed little love for him. So he's this very independent, headstrong, emotionally distant individual who struggles to have meaningful relationships with anybody (note the phone call with Susanna where he admits to not being good at it).
I find it hard to 'hate' him, he had a very limited upbringing which damaged him.
The fact that Charlie made you hate him so much is a tribute to Tom Cruse acting. You should watch in the Last Samurai and also in a Few Good Men

In terms of Dustin Hoffman movies a would recommend Papillon, Little Big Man, All the Presidents Men, Kramer vs Kramer. There are just so many even a few animated films voices.
At the time this movie came out, autism wasn't as common, nor was it well-known. The movie conveys that in a few ways. Charlie has to ask for clarification, and later, others think he's saying artistic. It was good for people to learn about autism. The man Raymond is based on is interesting, too.
When the box of toothpicks are dropped, the odd thing is we can see Raymond is holding a toothpick. It makes the need for one a bit questionable. A toothpick in the hand is worth 82, 82, 82 on the floor, or 4 in the box.
Autism really wasn't very common when I was growing up, so I can just imagine how hard it would be when directly dealing with that. Very hard for people to understand it for sure

This movie brought the autistic affliction to light for many, including myself. It also spawned the meme phrase "definitely a good driver".

The most powerful scene to be is the result of the rain man Raymond discovery in the bathroom
Charlie bends and takes Raymond s shoes off....has a meaning in just about every culture...mostly love, respect, honor....Charlie is becoming redeemed through the love he discovered with his brother
I felt the same way as you with the Charlie character. By the end of the movie, I changed my feeling towards him. And, I also realized, through a commentator's post, that the father left Charlie two things that were more valuable than the money, in his father's heart. And that he leaving those two sentimental valuable things to Charlie meant how much his father loved him. Great reaction.
Tom Cruise is not only a movie action hero. He has made over 46 films with quite a good range of different characters and he is always 110% involved in everyone of them. If you hated him is because he nailed it as usual.

The last samurai, a few good men are some of the best Cruise's movies. You have to see it. They are so good. They are some of the best movie of all time.

Even if the door to the room was shut, not locked he may have opened it to check out the noise and had it been locked he might have had a breakdown, so it was a precarious situation. I agree I don't know why Raymond wasn't afraid of train wrecks. Did Raymond really know the background of the the person who approached him in the casino? He said he was attracted to the "sparkling" presence. A serious amount of Charlie's negative demeanor was his severe disappointment not knowing of his brother, which was an extension of his father's negative relationship with his son. From Vernon's demeanor he didn't know if there was anything negative about Charlie bonding with Raymond. Did Vernon lose his job? We'll never know.
You hated so much Charlie character because Tom Cruise is a complex actor who knew how to play the role.
Tom Cruise did amazing! He really played the character well. That's what I like with actors that are good, they can make you hate their character in one movie and love their character in a different movie

I’ve been to Palm Springs and Cincinnati. Would MUCH rather go to Cincy. Green, rolling hills, rivers, lots to do/see, very nice residents. Palm Springs: brown, dusty, barren, triple digit heat. Yep, Cincinnati for me.

I really do not like Tom Cruise as a person, but I love this movie. Fun fact: the counselor/moderator at the end was the director, Barry Levinson, not sure if they had problems casting the part or if he always intended to do it himself.
This was my first Time Cruise movie and I wasn't sure if he was a good actor, or if he was an asshole and just got this role because of it 😂

You might try Tom in The Firm, even if just on your own time. Multi-character law thriller, sorry no fantasy bows n arrows (like his "Legend") but still just as gripping. I hope you try it.

Actually, the fart was an accident (not in the script), and they just went with it then kept in in the movie.

You should watch the documentary "Kim Peek - The Real Rain Man" on TH-cam. It's about the real person who inspired the screenplay for Rain Man. It's a great doc about an extraordinary human being.

I love watching Rain man reactions just to see which reactors would "leave their son in a jail for two days"... Your hatred towards a fictional character was really exhausting to me as a viewer, you should open ur heart more and give folks a chance...

Dustin Hoffman spent time with an autistic person to learn how to act. There is some criticism that it stereotypes people with autism. As a parent of an autistic child I both appreciate that the movie portrays autism sympathetically, but also agree that it somewhat stereotypes it. But overall I think it is extremely well done.

It wasn’t really an abduction. Raymond was a voluntary patient and Bruner hadn’t established a guardianship.
They kind of mentioned in a couple of places that Raymond was a voluntary patient, and they never applied for legal custody; therefore, Charlie being a relative could "legally" take Raymond out of Walbrook.
Even if it's legal, it still didn't seem like a great idea at the start lol

speaking as an autistic guy (although not on Ray's level): my one exception to not wanting to be touched is women I find sexually attractive. 2 exceptions to not wanting to look people in the eyes, and they're one
I actually enjoyed the fact tom cruise's character was entitled, it made a lot more sense for him to be that way due to how he was raised which majority of people turn out to be that way when they're raised by wealthy parents that don't have much time for their children. I think you're going a bit too hard on Charlie as well this is based a few decades ago where practically the majority of the world didn't know or care about autism in any way, people with autism were considered to be burdens and weaklings.
Charlie is very much a "douche nozzle", but the movie does a great job of where that comes from. Having had no parental guidance in his childhood and having to build up his own life and career, you can start associating money and status as all important as they become part of your identity, so you have no patience with anyone and live life at a fast pace. Spending time with Raymond, he was forced to slow down, be patient and gradually understand what matters more in life; actual relationships and connections. The hyper defensiveness he shows in the end at the meeting is his desperation and abandonment issues resurfacing as he feels he's going to lose the one genuine connection he's ever had. As he proves, its no longer about the money. Overall, a genius movie and a classic story. PS: I also thought Suzanna kissing Raymond was unnecessary and forced, like they wanted Raymond to have a kissing scene even when the story didn't need it.

Granted he has deep-rooted issues, but I honestly think once he makes a connection with Raymond, he begins to change for the better. If you watch a bit more closely, there's genuine character growth.
There is character growth, but it's still possible to not like a character. Character growth doesn't mean automatically liking a character

You are discovering about Charlie how I feel about Tom Cruise in general. I think the actor is a total douche. This happens to be one of the only movies I actually enjoy starring Tom cruise. The other is A Few good men.
