I read that Fred Savage, the actor playing the young boy, was devastated when he learned he didn't have and scenes with Andre the Giant. Having wanted the part mostly because he was a fan of Andre's. When Andre learned this he randomly showed up on set just to meet the boy. And for the remainder of his life would send Fred hand written Christmas cards every year, to his "biggest" fan..

Like the IMDB trivia you mentioned about the writer saying “OMG she’s on fire!” Elwes told that one too. He said the they had a fire safety briefing, but do you know who wasn’t there? William Goldman….

Elwes told them to talk to Reiner who decided to try and film it with the regular swords but with Guest coming down behind Elwes head so there was no contact.
Guest was pretty concerned about trying this because while Elwes and Mandy had light weight fencing swords his was a solid metal broadsword.
Still everyone agreed and they gave it try. The cameraman said it didn’t look quite right. So Reiner had Guest swing a little closer
Still didn’t look right. So Reiner was like just a little bit closer and Guest and Elwes were feeling a bit of concern said ,”Are you sure?” And Reiner said “yup just a smidge closer”
Elwes told the audience at this point, “Do you remember how the movie went black at this point? It did for me too. I woke up in the hospital with the same doctor who fixed my broken toe”, (which he broke when Andre convinced him to try out his ATV during the first week of shooting.)

Which is how it should be imo. I LOVE when the actors put in so much effort so that they, themselves, can do the majority of things like this. It gives the director so much more freedom with camera angles, because they don't have to avoid the faces in the shots, because it's the real actors. Sadly, they don't do it nearly as much these days. So the fight scenes are cut to hell.

True, although a lot depends on the casting, if you cast people capable of such training then great,if you cast someone who looks the part but can hardly move then you have to resort to other options.
Also many actors are working on several projects at the same time and don't always have the time to train, the likes of Keanu Reeves and Viggo Mortensen still give their all for a part.

@@xenontouchstone Naturally, which of course depends on the part being cast, the casting director, etc. I'm naturally talking about roles like this, younger roles played by younger actors/actresses, when looking the part shouldn't be an issue and mobility shouldn't be an issue. At that point, it's entirely about the actor themselves, and how much work they are willing to put in.

Robin Wright (Buttercup) tells a story about Andre the Giant. She says the cast went horseback riding on a day when they had a break from filming and got caught in freezing rain on the way back. She says that Andre looked over and saw her shivering and, casually, like it was the most natural thing in the world, he rested his enormous hand on her head like a hat. She says that not only did his hand both keep the rain off and warm her up surprisingly well, but the gesture made her feel safe. In the interview I saw where she told the story, she choked up a bit during the story, saying that he was a super kind person.
Arnold Schwarzenegger actually has a funny story I recommend looking up about the man. Arnold says that when you went somewhere with Andre, his friends payed for *nothing,* and he liked going to really expensive places. Arnold says that he started feeling like a leech and decided that he was going to pay the next time no matter what...the rest of the video is him telling the story of the aftermath of that decision. Its really funny and rather than telling the story here, I recommend just searching Arnold's interview about Andre the Giant. He tells it better than I could.

Glad you enjoyed this one. It's one of my all-time favourites, and it's very re-watchable, as you say.
Many reactors have wondered much the same as you did about Vizzini, and why Inigo and Fezzik didn't simply throw him overboard when he started barking at them. But you need to understand, he recruited them at the absolute lowest point of their lives. Vizzini touches on it briefly in that scene, but the novel by William Goldman goes into more detail about Inigo and Fezzik's backstories, and just how desperate they were when he found them. In fact, he probably made sure to look for strong men to hire in just such a situation, so that no matter how Vizzini treated them or what he demanded, they'd be to dependent on him to mutiny.
And there was a chance for Vizzini to win that battle of wits. If you remember, Westley asked him, "Where is the poison?", rather than, "Which cup is it in?" If his opponent had been just a bit more clever, he would have realized that Westley's question left open the possibility that the poison was in both chalices, and that there was a safe option to drink from: The bottle.

My absolute favorite movie of all time. Wonderful reaction!
Cary Elwes wrote a book called "As You Wish..." about this movie and the experiences they had making it. It is absolutely worth a read and you should absolutely read it.
Inigo's survival was a curiosity for sure, but it is easily explained. During the scene on the castle wall he got a taste of the miracle pill, just enough to keep him from dying from his wounds, though his lifelong mission and his hallmark line gave him the drive to keep fighting.
In 1990 I started dating a girl who was also a huge Princess Bride fan. We watched the movie often together, and we would quote it back and forth to each other any chance we got, working quotes into normal conversations and everything. It was great fun, at least for us, and we're still good friends today and will occasionally send each other a text of a line from the movie.
She had one thing she loved doing which drove me bonkers. Anytime I was talking and said that something was possible, she would immediately quietly say "Pig" as Westley did when insulting Humperdinck. It had the unfortunate effect (unfortunate for me, wildly funny for her) of derailing my train of thought every single time, leaving me to gape at her while I tried to remember what I had been talking about. 😀

There's a lovely YT video I wish I could find again that observes there are two love stories going on here: Buttercup and Westley; and the grandfather and the boy, who starts out complaining about grandpa coming over, and ends by asking grandpa to come back tomorrow to read the story again.

There were scratches and lines all through the Fire Swamp scene and when we told the manager, he said he knew and he had a new print coming. He gave us passes to come back the next weekend. Now, this is 1987, way before Internet - so word of mouth was the only way sleeper movies happened... the next weekend, the theater was literally Standing Room Only. Word of mouth from the sneak was so good, everyone had to go see it.
My (then future) wife saw it that summer with a friend also... but this quickly became "our movie" even though it wasn't the first movie we saw together... and still is to this day. (The first movie we saw together was an extremely predictable and forgettable RomCom called "Can't Buy Me Love" which starred a VERY young Patrick Dempsey - Dr. McDreamy from Grey's Anatomy.)

To put Andre the Giant into "perspective " Carey Elwes is 6ft 5in and is dwarfed by Andre. Also the pose you commented on after Vizzini was dispatched was directly influenced by Andre. He had a 3 wheeler- predecessor to today's 4 wheelers. They were notoriously easy to tip Andre convinced Carey to take it for a spin , tipped it and broke his foot. When the scene was shot he was deliberately balancing on one foot hence the exaggerated pose.

Christopher Guest, the guy who played Count Rugen, the six-fingered man, really bonked Cary on the head with the pommel of his sword. He had to get stitches! Christopher has been in some other cult classic movies. Namely, "This is Spinal Tap," a mockumentary about a rock band. (I can more easily switch hands (left-left) than to modify tactics to fight left-right... particularly for my favourite weapon, which is messer... though I have had enough practice to make that a less secure proposition - more recently I find that I can use the 'wrong' angles of left-right fencing to my advantage slightly more often than they cause me problems).

My contribution to the Trivia Dump, particularly about the clever writing:
In the Battle of Wits, Westley gave Vizzini a fair chance - he didn't say "which cup is poisoned," he said "where is the poison?" (V was correct that he could choose neither the cup in front of him or W) and he said "and we both drink" (the bottle was still right there).
After W explained that iocane was odourless and undetectable, master tracker Humperdinck took one sniff of the container and immediately said "Iocane."
While at Miracle Max's, W did say "true love," but M was right when he said "to bluff." In his confrontation with H, W won the day with a bluff...

After that fight was over Rob had a saying that would signify a wrap. And when he said it for that last time Mandy was heart broken. He was crying over it in the interview. Decades later and he still misses it.
Also, diring Covid, a bunch of actors recreated The Princess Bride scene for scene but they would only shoot a few scenes and a new cast would carry on. These scenes were shot on home recordings, often in their respective back yards. I remember this one actor using his own dogs as ROUS's in the Fire Swamp scenes. It's a must see for fans of this film.

One of my favorite movies, one of the best scenes is when she rolls down hill instead of sliding or walking

In the fight between the Man in Black and Inigo, the actors practiced for several months, before they did it. And the names they dropped were all real Renaissance fencing masters.b

Billy Crystals improvs while shooting the Miracle Max scene caused Rob Reiner to direct from outside the set and Manny Patinkin to fracture a rib from hysterical laughter. True story.

Good one, Verowak! Such a charming movie. 😊 Cary Elwes is really good in Glory as well, another great movie, but very heavy. Thanks for sharing this one with us!

Glory was part of my Denzel Washington poll, but it didn't win. I'll get around to it though!

This movie is a true gem. Just a brilliant, brilliant film. I showed this when I worked at a movie theater in HS, and it's been a favorite since. Rob Reiner is such an amazing director.

@VerowakReacts the list of his amazing films is long. This is Spinal Tap (comedy), Stand By Me (coming of age comedy-drama), A Few Good Men (courtroom drama), Misery (thriller/horror), The Sure Thing (teen/HS comedy).

That marriage sequence has actually been used for real weddings. Probably 10s of thousands of people at the least have used that hilarious monologue at their wedding.

Oh, I love this movie. The book is worth reading, too. Both the screenplay and the novel were written by William Goldman, though he used a pseudonym "S. Morgenstern" for the book, back in the day.

Sometimes I think the secret of this movie is its lack of pretense...it is EXACTLY what it is...and doesn't try to be more or less...and people sense it at a primal level. It is fun, sweet, charming, humorous and bittersweet...and never dull. It is a masterclass in storytelling contained in a single movie. We may never see another quite like it, but at least we have it to pass from generation to generation...as perfect as Casablanca or the Wizard of Oz. Some things are just treasures for the ages.

This movie is just fun. Love quoting it & always watch it when it's on. The priest voice kills me every time. Especially when he says Buttercup.
