Mcg is a genius, he made a movie about the dangers of hollow empty looks while ignoring what's on the inside, so he made a pretty empty looking movie with no script, genius. He's playing 4D chess.
A lot of commentators don’t realize it’s a build up to a bigger story, but I also think that the story would have been better delivered in a series format, with some character narration
I read the books in middle school so yeah they’re definitely a little too late with this film, waste of money but corporations are too afraid of being canceled hence why they keep recycling old ideas and junk. Also miss when trailers didn’t show the whole movie and the guy the narrates over em that stopped around 2010’s 😢
You are right. It IS based on a YA series that pre-dates Hunger Games by 3 years and Divergent by 5 years. I remember reading it many many years ago bc I was a fan of the author Scott Westerfeld, but even the novel was atrocious. I am not shocked that the movie is just as much a dumpster fire 🔥
I remember reading the series as well and I think the idea is interesting - probably because it was stolen from the Twilight zone episode - but I do remember the books being dull.
I remember reading the first book and then googling to find synopsises of the other books in the series because I was interested in learning what happened next, but not interested enough to actually read more books in the series. I found the premise more fascinating than the prose or the storytelling so yeah.
My 19-year old daughter is told that she looks like Joey King all of the time and she gets mad. I think Joey (and my daughter) are beautiful and adorable. When I was young, society complained about women trying to look like the girls in rock videos or magazines, but I think modern social media is even worse. Everyone is obsessed with their looks and no one even seems interested in learning or evolving as people.
In a few old Perry Mason episodes, a young female character was meant to be ugly (before blossoming into a beautiful young lady). The producers would put the gorgeous actress they hired in thick glasses, mess up her hair, and give her baggy clothes to wear. She still looked gorgeous, but with glasses, messy hair, and baggy clothes. So glad that proud tradition lives on in quality fare like Uglies and Joey King.
@@SavannahSedai I'm such a huge Perry Mason fan that I can tell you the episode to which I was referring was called The Case of the Ugly Duckling and it features the lovely Anne Whitfield with uncombed hair and a scowl. Oh stop it with the PC bs. Joey king is one of the most unattractive people to ever grace the screen. But I admire her for at least not going the plastic surgery route that thousands of actors naturally more attractive than her felt pressured to do.

The plot description was ringing an old bell... it sounds like the movie is based on a book series. The author wrote another series, "Leviathan," that I really liked, but I passed on the Uglies books.
I just stumbled upon this video and loved your review! Acting out the scene with sound effects was gold. I agree the movie is the worst. I fast forwarded through most of it. Why do movie makers think viewers want to watch seemingly endless action segments? It was bad. Frankly, I would have been more interested if she had been transformed early in the film to see what her life as a Pretty was like; that might have been more fun. Maybe that's what the sequel will be all about. (liked your review and subscribed)
You’re missing the point It wasn’t about being pretty it was about mass society mind control through the “pretty” medium. However I agree the movie was horrible, it was too fast and lacked depth and character development

You know what’s funny?! I watched this movie the other day and 10 mins in, I said to myself ‘this is the WORST MOVIE OF THE YEAR’. I’m so glad someone else agrees with me. Let me get my popcorn ready for this 🍿 😊
My takeaway from this is... "McG is still working?... and with the name McG?" And this is a concept lift from a Twilight Zone episode called Number 12 Looks Just Like You.
The only movie Joey King has ever been in worth anything is Stupid, Crazy, Love. Steve Carrell plays her dad and Julianne Moore plays her mother. She has a very small part. But, every movie I have seen her in is just terrible. This sounds no different.
Some guy (the only smart one) In the smoke kept pointing out how suspicious it was that as soon as someone arrives some scouts get really close to them but he gets disregarded by David. Main girl respects the guy she is friends with even after him not talking to her in 3 months and getting rid of scar but still trusts him for some reason The main girl for some reason has medical knowledge despite no teacher or reason to teach that. This doesn't come up later so it didn't even matter. After the second action scene which during that scene it was established that these super soldiers can split a tree in half by running into it gets hurt by a crossbow (how) And the ending kinda negates the films goal (definitely sequel bait) they want someone to turn into a pretty to see if they can turn back the process even though there are plenty of people already like that. Final thing they don't tell her how to activate the device that calls them in as if she was supposed to figure it out which she does on accident (would have made more sense just to be a tracker)
I guess I’m too easy and willing to accept bad graphics and meddling writing just to see my early reads on the big screen. I would change a lot but I also at least watched all of it to appreciate the few parts from the that shone through. I hope they get to finish the trilogy and do better as it goes
Btw, this movie IS based on a book, and apparently its a whole lot better. I havent read it myself, ive just watched another video about this movie, but one thing i learned is that the lead actress NOT being ugly, is intentional. The book explains that the "uglies" are just regular looking people, they arent bad looking, theyre just average. It was done to show how stupid the idea of "youll matter when youre pretty" is, because pretty is subjective. Pretty sure theres alot of other stuff they did wrong when adapting it, but like i said I haven't read it myself 😅

I've come to the conclusion that Netflix is content with putting out very few good things throughout the year to cancel out all the bad things they put out. Because, in the end, all they care about are views and subscriptions. As long as people tune in (even if its a hate watch) they'll put out anything to hold us over until something of quality actually comes out.

Well, in a difference of opinions I did like it. I mean I liked the message of being observed and judged because of our look and it is so generic, I know, but it was so much better than other ones with $200,000,000.00 budget and high profile actors and CGI effects.
I stumbled upon it last week or so and watched it. And I thought “wow new low” Like maybe it’s made for like 9 year olds? With a pg13 rating. 🤦🏻♂️ So bad. So sad. So 🤮 Horrible acting. Horrible cgi. Horrible pacing. The best part was right toward the end when I fell asleep
😄my impression was basically the same thing! (Except I excruciatingly, watched it all the way through…so, I know it was because she/Tally ‘volunteered’ to turn pretty bcuz she promised to be the first one to take the ‘antidote’ ..only because they didn’t want to force Shay in to it 😂!) it was absolutely 💯 a horrible ending to a horrible movie 🎥 😉
When i saw this pop up on Netflix and read the description...i just knew it was going to make for amazing yt content 😂. Uglies vs pretties 🤣🤣🤣 I swear even my 17 year old daughter was like "wtf?!"
Some compared this ridiculous movie to “Eye of the Beholder” on Twilight Zone… not even the same universe. I was angry having wasted my time and amazed that a studio actually spent real money to make it. What’s worse is this is probably the first of a trilogy. Please don’t.
Adam, I’ve been watching your other channel for the first time. I had so much fun! And I was just wondering about this movie because I didn’t like the premise, so this is perfect! Yes, I’m ‘glacing’ you, or whatever people say
this feels like the result when you go to school and not graded in tests but instead told you are beautiful whatever you choose to answer. well i don't know about other people but i'm dumb asf so might not be the best thing to let me be myself when i was young.
McG had some movies that I liked, for example The Babysitter. But this one is really bad, and it is too early to say it is the worst of 2024, since obviously Netflix is simply pushing out things to fill the streaming quota.
I think the story would have more impact if the Uglies were slaves and lived in squalor. Also, the people who lived in the Smoke didn't look like they worked a day in their lives.
I saw this movie in my Netflix recommendations and immeaditely thought it was another terrible streaming movie that was made just to be another piece of filler content for a streaming platform. And it looked like a cheap movie based on some YA novel so I pretty much knew what to expect even though I didn’t even bother to read the description. I just laughed at the title when I saw that it starred a bunch of generically good looking oung Hollywood people.
I hope Joey's career won't drown out, she did way better than some YA lead. But golden hair and whatnot? I need to look that up! EDIT: it's the thumbnail of the trailer. What a mess. PS: Watch The Princess. That was good.
Me and my husband were just trying to watch this like 20 minutes ago. Got to the part of her being caught in the land of the Pretties and escaping with Shay and that was enough for us!

@@rumham7466 yeah that too. I remember her in Bullet Train and was not believing her as sexy or the good liar/actress her character was meant to be. I can only assume her parents are well connected or something.
This was so horrible i couldn't believe it was real..I couldn't even get through it
Joey King is so beautiful and I got so mad every time they told her she was ugly!!! Smh
Your channel is like the better version of Chris stuckman...no shade
Well, in a difference of opinions I did like it. I mean I liked the message of being observed and judged because of our look and it is so generic, I know, but it was so much better than other ones with $200,000,000.00 budget and high profile actors and CGI effects.
Yea 🎉you did my review thank you so much adam
I stumbled upon it last week or so and watched it. And I thought “wow new low”
Like maybe it’s made for like 9 year olds? With a pg13 rating. 🤦🏻♂️
So bad. So sad. So 🤮
Horrible acting. Horrible cgi. Horrible pacing. The best part was right toward the end when I fell asleep
I searched: “Was the Uglies written by AI?” and stumbled upon this. Jumble all the dystopian fics. But Laverne Cox is still the best.
Netflix needs to bump Uglies…. off the menu. p.s. If the movie sucks, listen to it in Spanish so at least you’re learning.
When i saw this pop up on Netflix and read the description...i just knew it was going to make for amazing yt content 😂. Uglies vs pretties 🤣🤣🤣
I swear even my 17 year old daughter was like "wtf?!"
Some compared this ridiculous movie to “Eye of the Beholder” on Twilight Zone… not even the same universe. I was angry having wasted my time and amazed that a studio actually spent real money to make it. What’s worse is this is probably the first of a trilogy. Please don’t.
When she said “make me pretty!” That was super CRINGE
Thanks for making me laugh! Really enjoyed your review.
I hear the Happy Gilmore sequel will be on Netflix. I’m so not excited
They've actually made a movie out of this lmao - I remember reading this novel as a required high school assignment
McG had some movies that I liked, for example The Babysitter. But this one is really bad, and it is too early to say it is the worst of 2024, since obviously Netflix is simply pushing out things to fill the streaming quota.
I love Babysitter. Those 2 films are awesome.
The lead actor plays the role perfectly. His expressions are on point.
I think the story would have more impact if the Uglies were slaves and lived in squalor. Also, the people who lived in the Smoke didn't look like they worked a day in their lives.
“Orgy of garbage “, sums this movie up perfectly 😂
The CGI was a mess. The storyline was vapid.
McG directed the so-so pandemic favorite Rim of the World. The CGI in that film was trash as well and was actually distracting.
I got 50 minutes in and was surprised I even got that far. Everything I saw up to that point was thrash.
Me and my husband were just trying to watch this like 20 minutes ago. Got to the part of her being caught in the land of the Pretties and escaping with Shay and that was enough for us!
