I've spent the last year being told I'm a 28.5" draw by every bow technician that touched a measuring tape. Bought a new bow but couldn't get comfortable until it was set to 29". A week later I cranked it up to 29.5". Just an hour ago I cranked it to 30" and I can actually get proper back tension at full draw. This explains my months of left/right misses that I couldn't tune out. Fuck the tape, I have weird proportions and I want to be stable.
No u don’t have weird proportions the tape measure deal is a crappy way to get ur draw length fist to the wall in a full draw stance measure from wall to corner of mouth makes it spot on Everytime
The tape is a starting point, not final say. We use that to get going, then actually have the customer draw the bow with their release and we check how their arms, shoulders, and heads look with proper anchor point etc. Usually the tape works or is close but not for everyone.
@@teenelomz9402 Weirdly enough, the best way I've found to measure my own draw length is also with a measuring tape. I put the roll in my palm, and lean against a wall in my proper shooting form. Distance to corner of my mouth is within a 1/4" of true draw length depending on string angle.
We have one similar about 45 miles away, but the one we have here in town is meh. The local shop did an "okay" job setting up my bow, but I had issues with my peep not straightening up. It was just something I "dealt with". I went to this other shop to get a QAD rest installed, and the guy checked my setup out, replaced my string loop and moved it slightly and retied my peep, and it all seems to feel better, and moved my poa/poi quite a bit, so now I have to redo my sight tape on my sight, but that's okay. It was gonna have to be done anyway, switching from a whisker biscuit to a fall away.
My favorite axle to axle is 40" on my TRX 7, I have it on 28" draw and the string barley touches the tip of my nose. However, I have the Vertix, Traverse, VXR 31.5 and the 28, and every time I used a different one I feel awkward in my draw length even though they're all 28" draw. So the conclusion here for me is either buy different mods for different bows or remember where to rest my hand under my ear with every bow, and I can diffidently tell you from experience that if you change bows the draw length might so slightly change, so always be tinkering with your set up till you buy the next rig and keep tinkering!, good video, a lot of youtubres fail to address this common problem till the rookie comes along! Bravo dude!
Thought the same. All good archers and coaches say straighten the arm, but always have a tiny bit of a soft bend to it...can lead to some bad joint issues down the road with that super locked out extended arm...his doesnt look overly hyperextended tho but more so what it should have been, straight arm but not super locked out or not super bent
And id also try to work on not punching that release and let the tension and back muscles break the shot more than the thumb punching on it...thats jus me though
I was just here 2 weeks ago! I live 15 min down the road. Just picked up my first bow (Hoyt Ventum 30) and am absolutely loving it so far. Maybe I’ll run into you there some time 👍🏼
Move to Columbus Ohio area! Two shops keep telling me I'm 29" draw...28 with longer d-loop seems bout perfect. I have never put the string on my big nose and have shot for over 30yrs. Thx for vid
Great episode! Great shop! But, as a beginner, you should learn the proper way to tune the arrows. Tune the arrows to the bow. Incert tune the arrow by spinning it to get the correct position. Install the nock and bare shaft the arrow to paper tune. After you’ve turned the nock to get bulletholes, then install fleches. Making adjustments to the bow should be the last resort. Bareshaft all arrows and tune. Otherwise your tuning the bow to one arrow.
Out of curiosity, how many people here keep a straight arm vs. a bend in the elbow? When I got fitted for my first bow last December (Hoyt Torrex XT) I had my draw length measured and the shop owner told me to put a bend in my elbow.. it immediately felt much more comfortable and took all of the strain out of my shoulder and elbow.
There is a perfect draw length for everyone and the "wingspan divided by 2.5" usually gets close, but NOT ALWAYS. Everyone's body dimensions are different. I've personally seen bow shops sell bows to people that were 2-3 inches too long in DL but they didn't care. Wanted the sale over putting the right mods on the bow. In this video, IF Nick was going to pursue competitive archery, I'd say his DL is about 3/4" too long. However, if he's just going to hunt and maybe shoot a few local 3D tournaments, AND HE'S COMFORTABLE WITH THAT DL, then forget it and enjoy the sport! He's not going to suffer significant accuracy issues where he is now.
@@AA-mk4pu true my bow only goes to 30" I had to make my d loop 3/4 in I need new bow that can go to 30.5 or 31 thinking vxr 31 .5 or maybe vertix but yes it only helps by making your anchor position wear you need it but your right it doesn't change the draw length it's a cheap way of making things work lol
Maybe I misunderstood but, playing with the sting loop length does not change the draw length. It only changes your anchor point. A bow set up with a 28" draw length and a hard back wall is still a 28" draw length. No matter what you do to the loop size.
It is amazing that people don’t know their draw length before buying a bow. Remember this before reading negative reviews about archery equipment. Good vid!
I’ve been shooting a bow since I was five, started bow hunting at 13. I’ve shot piles of different manufacturers bows over the years, draw lengths vary pretty widely from manufacturer to manufacturer. Shot a Mathews dxt at 28.5, bowtech btx at 29, hoyt vetrix at 28, my old diamond deadeye at 29.5. My wingspan measurement has me at 29.25. Just gotta tinker with things. Good video.
Drawlengths very rarely come as spec'ed. They usually come a half inch longer to "cheat' on the speeds. I've never seen a bow come in shorter than spec.
For me... My draw length is actually 28 inches but I'm actually made it a little shorter.... just feel a little bit at home for me since I like a little bit of pressure so I can full it Max out... coming from a rock climbing background 27 1/2 inches with 71 pounds max out draw weight is actually feels really at home for me... it's not about how much you weight you can draw or how perfect is your draw length... each individual person have their own personal preference... Don't get too caught up on what people say.... just focus on what your body feels natural for you....
Good information. Thanks for posting. It appears that you have access to an excellent bow shop. I have learned the hard way that there are bow tech’s to avoid. Sometimes the learning curve is good and sometimes it is expensive. God bless
There’s a bow shop around me that goes by these measurements by heart he says I’m shooting to long of a draw length I’m shooting 28 he says I’m 26 but I’ve won 3D tournaments killed more deer then I can count I’m comfortable so no way I’ll change
Awesome bow tech took me several months to finally figure my exact draw length, loop length just doing alot of shooting taking notes and writing down what pin movement was like. It help that I had homemade draw board and press to play with the bow.
On my V3 27 the bottom cam is touching the left yoke cable, when I draw my bow. The cam is leaning... How can I fix it?? Or better to throw my bow to the bin???
He looks maxed out, which is great for target archery. But for a hunting bow it is probably smart to consider that not every shot will be completely level. At an angle you have a good chance of being too long. Also I've never seen much use for paper tuning past about 10 feet. That last shot looked atleast 10 yards. Maybe it was just camera making it look long.
Appreciate the videos and realize this is an old video... BUT.... with as simple as reserving a stringis, why try to pry the serving back together with pliers instead of cutting and reserving?
I think some are looking at your anchor point and using that to say your draw length is to long. I have seen this becoming more common when the nose nock is used instead of a kisser button for consistent anchor point for amateur or beginners. In my experience the nose nock tends to push back the anchor point from the corner of mouth to mid cheek. I'm sure everyone is different and depending on the knowledge of the person working on the bow or with the person. This bow pro seems to be very knowledgeable
Raymond's a good dude and a good bow tech. My two tips for you is put a nose button or kisser button on to get a more consistent anchor and stop punching that thumb release. There's a pull through process to shooting a thumb release that once you figure it out, your accuracy will really improve.
and ohhh it's a pretty sweet bow as a beginner user choice.... it's a flagship bow... it's one of the top of the line bow.... so for a beginner you've chosen a really perfect bow in the market.... maybe one day I'm planning to get a Hoyt Helix turbo for my next upgrade one day...
That look a lot better strings at the tip of your nose and along side the crease of your lip the vanes aren’t touching you face it looks a lot better just buy changing that micro adjustment on the d loop looks a lot better
I’d say a slight bend is preferable to a locked out elbow you can develop something that feels kind a like tennis elbow or if you were elbow already hyper extends you may start hitting your arm with the bowstring
Hello RX Angler, you helped me make my choice for upgrading to Mathews V3, from this Friday i'm a happy owner. I used to shot an old single cam compound bow and now with the V3... a different universe. For your next videos can you talk about the strings and possible upgrades to it. I can see that a lot of youtubers use different one from the stock one. I heard that the stock one is not very good and long lasting. Thank you and greetings from Bulgaria!
However... by locking out the elbow, the tricep is flexing to support the draw weight, causing the elbow to rotate which induces torque into the bow hand, resulting in the arrow having a spiral as it flies down range.
using bone support will allow you to relax the muscles in your bow arm. This will reduce the torque applied to the bow. Any time muscle is used to hold, or push torque is there. The shooters bow side shoulder is too high in the video to properly use the skeleton to support the draw weight of the bow. In this situation, torque is inevitable. It doesn't matter if his arm is locked out or bent. With the high shoulders, muscle must be used. If your arm is bent, you are not in the strongest position to shoot, your float will be larger and your shot will not be consistent. This particular archer also has a very poor anchor, does not activate the release with his back, and his draw side elbow is too low. Basically, he is in need of a good coach to be the best he is capable of.
"Locking out the elbow means u dont use muscle to hold the bow?" "Bending the bow arm puts the stress on the biceps?" Those are Strange comments from the shop staff. Arm bent aint wrong as long as shoulder is not high (sitting in its pocket) as the bone support will still be there. U can bend your bow arm ti compensate shooting a 4 inch or more shorter draw length perfectly fine if you observe the shoulder. High shoulder is a highway to injury. He could be thinking of the triceps instead of biceps which do nothing for a bow arm to hold the bow. The guys nocks is pretty much about directly below the eye, if it was too crazy long, the nocks would further back to his ears instead.
Why would he want to lengthen the d loop? It's a bit of a lazy approach, the correct way to do this is with switching the DL mod and taking some twists out of the cables
Great content, bro! DL looks good. I did notice that you were punching the trigger. Just put your thumb on the tigger and put constant and increasing pressure on the trigger until it fires.
Too long of draw length criticism is almost a cliche, but it does look long by half an inch at the beginning. But I like the corner of string near the corner of my mouth for an anchor point and my nose touching the string.
If needed to make up for that lack of contact with the string and your nose you can use a nose button. The Bowmar Nose button is one choice, and I started 3D printing my own as well.
Hey man, I’m not gona be “that guy” so I’m not gona say anything about how they set u up...no worry’s Ull shoot fine especially with how much you practice ...however I have a huge question for you ! Do you fletch your own arrows and if so...man you got an email address or something ? I paused the video and noticed a something I really think could help you out. If you don’t wana hear me out no worry’s man you got good form and are clearly committed to practice you will do great in archery . I hope you hear me out tho.
You don't papertune a bow shooting through paper that far away. The arrow would have corrected its flight by the time it got there. The arrow needs to be shot no more than 4 feet from the paper to see what it's doing r8ght off the bow, before it has time to correct its flight. Also, he's using 'steep' incorrectly regarding the string angle. On your bow, the string angle is shallow as it relates parallel to the ground. Steep is the angle of the vertical slope of the string as it relates parallel to the ground. Think of it in terms of a hillside - steep rises sharply, shallow rises gradually.
The closest bow Tec here in Ireland 🇮🇪 is up in Ennis and I’m not impressed by his attitude from the emails and the phone call and the rest of the Archery place’s here in Ireland are closed due to covid 😱😵💫 so …… plan B there is a Archery person here in west cork around where I live and I’m hoping to get in contact with him to get my Hoyt Maxxis 31 re stringed or to get new strings put on it and then I will be happy
This is exactly why I HATE short axle to axle bows! That bow might be 27 in. Axle to axle in the relaxed position, but as soon as you hit full draw, the limbs travel straight down and really decrease the axle to axle due to the "beyond parallel" design. This gives that string a very accute angle and it's impossible to touch your nose and have the string at the corner of your mouth. If you're really getting into target archery, go with a longer AtA bow. If only hunting out to 30-40 yards, you're fine.
Don’t listen to these internet archer bro. They don’t know Asian body geometry. We are built differently. It doesn’t look right to them and they rush to their keyboard
Try to set your feet before you draw. If nothing else, you’re loosing efficiency by moving your feet after the draw. That said, trust your shop more than strangers on the internet. I’m nobody. :D
Why do you divide by 2.5? why not just 2? also, someone measured me this way and came up with a number that was way off my draw. I ended up needing a much longer draw length. They thought I was 27, ended up being 28.5 and 29 on some bows.
Just a general rule. 2.5 happens to get it close and the true ratio varies based on each person's proportions. If you imagine the length between your elbow and hand divided by the length between your elbow and opposite hand. Everybody's ratio will be a little different. 2.5 method is just a starting point until you can actually pull the bow back.
Nose touching the string has ZERO to do with draw length. DL has to do with posture, anchor and accuracy. Nose touching the string is not a consideration when determining DL.
Tell me when you want me to come and I'll come out with you. Alrighty. Internally - I was shop talking you mate, I have no intention at all in inviting you lol.
I think your original draw length was correct. You didn't need to go longer or shorter. The fix for you, with a shorter nose, is to go with a longer ATA bow, not extending the draw length even more. Just my opinion. The most important thing is making sure that the arrow nock is in a neutral position that won't be affected by face pressure, and now it's too far back. Since this video is 1 year old, I'm sure you bought new bows anyway ha
i admit, that archery shop is cool and the design is awesome, good job. But never "lock" your elbow when shooting, a little known tendon will give you issues down the road.
You are hyper extending your elbow now "not good"...your putting too much hand on your grip you dont want the grip to pass the centerline on your palm that will help your front arm position again you dont want to lock out you want your arm to be straight out naturally ...I never seen someone fix a center serving that way not saying you can't I would just change it personally...and final note a bullethole with a fletched arrow at that distant doesnt mean much a decently tuned bow and average shooter will accomplish that and this is why bow shops do it that way next time strip the fletchings off one of your arrows and bring it with you..youll be amazed how off it might be
For 10 years I've been shooting pigs with my 28 inch ata Mission craze, finger shooting and I'm not to bad at hunting. Never had issues and never listen to what TH-cam clowns talk about, I get a bow and I shoot it and I hit my target it's that simple. Basically, he is in need of a good coach to be the best he is capable of.
"Locking out the elbow means u dont use muscle to hold the bow?"
"Bending the bow arm puts the stress on the biceps?"
Those are Strange comments from the shop staff.
I've been thinking about getting into archery.
In some shots you had the string far on the side of your nose instead of the tip. That’s why I’m guessing everyone thinks it was long
Yeah it’s all feel and group size... when it’s perfect you will group tighter than slightly long or slightly short.... at all distances
What angles do u have your backbar set at? And did it balance out in hand at full draw?
Why would he want to lengthen the d loop? It's a bit of a lazy approach, the correct way to do this is with switching the DL mod and taking some twists out of the cables
Great content, bro! DL looks good. I did notice that you were punching the trigger. Just put your thumb on the tigger and put constant and increasing pressure on the trigger until it fires.
LOL
Too long of draw length criticism is almost a cliche, but it does look long by half an inch at the beginning. But I like the corner of string near the corner of my mouth for an anchor point and my nose touching the string.
Thousands of arrows i get two years a string i have to reserve it at the knock about every 6 months but I shoot daily and alot
I've ran my string to the bitter end almost 10 years on factor chill r strings
You should check out Dominant Strands. Veteran owned.
Every person is different. Shoot your bow the way it is most repeatable. Let your groups tell you what is best.
Moral of the story...ignore the internet peanut gallery.
Looks great , don’t after the change , don’t listen to the key board warriors
Is it torque adjustable and forgiving as a Hoyt ?
Great explanation
Now that your draw length is fixed let's talk about the hammer you call a thumb 🤣
Great video. Valuable information.
Tech was very good and patient what's the name of your shop and where you located
Texas archery in spring Tx
You have a great bow shop. Listen to them an not the internet
Try to set your feet before you draw. If nothing else, you’re loosing efficiency by moving your feet after the draw.
That said, trust your shop more than strangers on the internet. I’m nobody. :D
Still trying to figure out what you meant by "overlooked issue that nobody talks about".
I'm sure its referring to the steeper string angle on the 27 and how it affects anchor etc.
He definitely got you straightened out, but your punching that thumb barrel like it was a high school bully lol.
Nose touching the string has ZERO to do with draw length. DL has to do with posture, anchor and accuracy. Nose touching the string is not a consideration when determining DL.
You need to find a new bow tech ! That should have been done when you got the bow .
Tell me when you want me to come and I'll come out with you.
Alrighty. Internally - I was shop talking you mate, I have no intention at all in inviting you lol.
You’re not gonna be able to consistently anchor with it like that tho
I think your original draw length was correct. You didn't need to go longer or shorter. The fix for you, with a shorter nose, is to go with a longer ATA bow, not extending the draw length even more. Just my opinion. The most important thing is making sure that the arrow nock is in a neutral position that won't be affected by face pressure, and now it's too far back. Since this video is 1 year old, I'm sure you bought new bows anyway ha
Raymond is good and it looked long from the scrunched up arm.
Looked fine to me
i admit, that archery shop is cool and the design is awesome, good job. But never "lock" your elbow when shooting, a little known tendon will give you issues down the road.
The internet was wrong. Imagine that……
I love my VXR 31.5
Awesome video.
Chain boy is wrong... do not want to lock out your elbow.
I’ve always got string slapped when my arm was straight 💁🏻♂️
Looked really good
You are hyper extending your elbow now "not good"...your putting too much hand on your grip you dont want the grip to pass the centerline on your palm that will help your front arm position again you dont want to lock out you want your arm to be straight out naturally ...I never seen someone fix a center serving that way not saying you can't I would just change it personally...and final note a bullethole with a fletched arrow at that distant doesnt mean much a decently tuned bow and average shooter will accomplish that and this is why bow shops do it that way next time strip the fletchings off one of your arrows and bring it with you..youll be amazed how off it might be
Wing span is the least accurate way to measure draw length....
For 10 years I've been shooting pigs with my 28 inch ata Mission craze, finger shooting and I'm not to bad at hunting. Never had issues and never listen to what TH-cam clowns talk about, I get a bow and I shoot it and I hit my target it's that simple. Adapt and overcome or you will believe all the crap people try to tell you. Just recently I've tried Truball thumb releases and guess what I'm just as good with these as I am with my fingers.
If you want to listen to other people tell you what you can and can't do, well you're a bloody sheep. Adapt people!
The Mathews problem is that they stopped making single cams…
Whenever the "internet says" seek professional advice...
That draw length after the d-loop change was to long
Best youtuber
Some awful info here. Your “pro” is about clueless
You’re a dumbass lol
As soon as he said you can change draw length with d loop size he lost all credibility.
@@tannerwilson4433 uh huh. I see your as clueless as the guy in the video. That’s ok.
@@flyfishermannick3632 you can certainly change the length of the anchor point with a longer D-loop it’s simple mathematics. You’re being a little harsh
@@JMakesWell anchor point yes. Not draw length.
Okay so this guy at the bow shop must not target shoot any🤣who the hell locks out their arm when shooting? Need to find a new bow shop bud cuz this guy doesn’t know what he is talkin bout. Your arm is supposed to be bent slightly. If you want to wear your arm out with the string go right ahead😂
Arent u American too?
The price is definitely a overlooked issue
Sorry it still looks to long. You couldn't use a kisser button even if you wanted to. You are drawing the string way past the corner of your mouth.
Prove it.
Please watch John Dudley school of nock.
