  • First upload in a new series following my Toyota Hilux Surf / 4Runner rebuild. The block gets stripped down while I wait on delivery of a new AMC Head. Bear in mind this isn't a 'How To' as I'm completely winging it.

    The biggest single cause of cracked heads on these motors is the viscous fan unit. Owners see their truck overheating and fit a new rad, 10 blade fans and ATF coolers. If the viscous unit is empty the fan is not engaging at low speed, so if driving in towns, or driving off road, two things happen. The ATF fluid is cooled in the bottom of the rad, the engine coolant in the top. The ATF fluid heats up, and this adds heat to the engine coolant. The fan isn't turning so it all turns into a nice little furnace, and the head cracks. The silicone oil in the viscous unit vanishes after a while, I took mine apart at 220k and it was empty. All it takes is £10 of 7000CST silicone oil, its the same stuff that RC truck owners fill their shocks with, way cheaper than the Toyota stuff. As soon as you start the engine you will feel the difference, there will be a gale force wind blowing under the bonnet. Great way to save £1500 on having a new head fitted.

      @@dingeldiy I also use Cinestyle on the camera for a flat colour profile.
      And then in Premier I use a Cinestyle effect on an adjustment layer. you can google "Jarle's Premiere Pro Presets version 4.0" for the free premier presets.
      I don't know much about colour grading but this seams to give a nice picture and its a very handy drag and drop solution. How do you find time to get so much online though? Barely making one a month if even

      Had 270k on this. O think it's more down to how it's used. I neglected to do cooling mods prior to towing which probably shortened the life of the head.

    how long did the engine sit with a cranked head? Did the coolant hurt the cylinder wall?

    • @mikesprojectgarage5123
      @mikesprojectgarage5123  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the walls were not in great shape. Didn't need sleeves but was cleaned up in the engine shop.
