THE BEST EARPRO FOR YOUR BUDGET | review Peltor vs ISOTunes vs Sordin vs Safariland vs Walkers

  • There's lots of different brands of ear pro out there, and they are not created equal. Imri did a good job of putting these brands to the test. In this video we review the Safariland Liberator, Sordin Supreme Pro X, ISOTunes Sport, Peltor Sport and Walker's razor slim passive Ear Protection.
You'll notice these brands have been out a while. We don't just film videos about "new" products, regurgitating the marketing information off the side of the box. Again, Imri put these muff ear pro through the ringer, using them through courses and hunts, rain or shine, winter or summer. Some did better than others. Give the video a watch and, if interested, we have added links for each product. Sorry, we don't have a discount code. We bought these so you wouldn't have to. TR

Pro tip, This will work for most ear pro as long as there is dead space inside the ear cups. This really works wonders with the Peltor Sports. Pop off the ear pads and expose the inner workings. Fill the void space of the ear cups with foam earplugs. As may as you can get in and stay comfortable while filling the void spaces. Next remove the ear pads from the housing or mounting plate if the ear pro has this style. Using 3M double sided automotive tape add David Clarke gel pads to the ear cups. These mods make the ear pro a little heavier but it drastically improves hearing protection and the David Clarke gel pads are the most comfortable on the market. Both with or without glasses. I wear David Clarke intercom headsets for hours and hours and never have a comfort problem as long as they have the gel pads.

One reason you want electronic vs passive earpro is that you don't want to be lifting one off your ear to hear someone talk, and that's the time the guy 5 yards away shoots a 300 win mag with a brake. I use Peltor Tac 500 muffs (26 NRR + bluetooth). I wear them shooting but also woodworking; routers, circular saws, table saws, etc can be extremely loud.

Ear protection is one of the most frustrating things I have dealt with because only one has been effective for my seemingly deformed head to get a tight fit. So I have these ugly-ass bulky cheapos that make me look like Princess Leia from Star Wars. I decided it's better to save my hearing than to look cool.

You don’t actually need any form of ear pro to protect your hearing. A trick I found at the range is saying “lalala I can’t hear you lalala” to mitigate earring loss.

I got a pair of electronic walkers last year. They were on sale at Bass Pro Shop. I was disappointed to discover that they had no directionality to them. Everything sounds like it's from the same place. My cheap Earmor have better battery ports (easier to change, weather proofing) and have good sound direction to them. I wouldn't recommend Walkers.

I use Peltor Sport Tactical 500's on an indoor range every day, and have used them for phone calls while running the range vacuum, at the same time the adjacent bay was firing. Before the trolls start, not even a 50cal can punch thru the divider wall, and the shooter would have to walk 5 feet backward to shoot around the wall... and it's not a public range.
But back to the muffs... I can't say enough good things about them.

I have the Pro Ears Gold and the plastic head band broke on me after a few uses. The bright side is they sell the replacement so it wasn't a total loss. The quality is Ok but I would not buy another one. I would recommend getting an ear pro that have metal headband.
I bought the Safariland Liberator and it's Ok and doesn't seal well with eye pro and I have to use an additional ear plug when shooting indoor. The positive is you can use either CR123 or AAA battery. However, it can be challenging to get the CR123 battery out. This ear pro does feel rugged. You can buy an option to change the headband too.
I also have the Sordin Supreme Pro X. It also feels rugged and seals the best out the three that I have. With this one, I found that I didn't need to wear additional ear plug when I was shooting indoor. I agree that the AAA can be a challenge to remove. So far, I like this ear pro the best.
    Thanks for the review Imri.

Good info here. I will say though, I have a large head and proportional ears and don’t run into the issues you have with ear cups. For everyone saying “walkers are fine” sure, they make fun shots quieter and you can hear stuff otherwise. The Sordins are a completely different experience. Can’t even be used in the same conversation. They don’t have the on/off “mic keying” feel with dead amplified air in the back ground. Walkers drove me nuts. I rarely used the active listening. It’s terrible. Sordins and the like are seamless. They only cancel out above a certain dB and it doesn’t have a switching effect. It’s not just about the audio quality. They are significantly more comfortable than others I’ve tried over the many years of shooting. It was tough to fit them in the budget, but knowing what I do now, I should have bought them way sooner. Worth the price.

My biggest complaint about hearing protection is firm pads pushing glasses into my head or allowing sound to 'leak'. That's the No. 2 reason I wear plugs and muffs. I'd pay Safariland's price if baby bottoms eliminate the ear-piece digging in.

Dude your ears are huge! lol Mine are bigger like elephant ears! lol To make it worse I can't use any in ear because they are shaped weird! I wish someone made some like the old Sony Walkman a sideways disc because that is the shape of my inner ear not round!

Better for your hearing as the skull bone transfers the sound waves if u only wear plugs.

Walkers are trash. The battery door is weak and the band is for the largest of heads only.

Seems to me decimal reduction is more important than looks. How could you do a video without addressing noise reduction??? Try again.

Budget? There should be no budget. As someone who experienced severe tinnitus despite foam plugs which i thought were sufficient at a recent visit to the range, I can assure anyone this expense is more important than ANY other aspect of your set up. I was naive. Do your research, and get the best. Period end of story. The alternative when you absolutely lose the top end of your hearing is terrifying. I didn't even realize the effect until after the session was over. If its a one time trauma, your ears will recover, hopefully, but holy hell was it a wake up call.
