    Very informative video, as always.
    I am still split between the two, as I like the long battery life and bigger cup-size of the sordins, but I like that you can remove the mic from the comtacs.
    Would you say that the mic on the sordins gets in the way if you have no intention of using it?

    • @ReconBrothers
      @ReconBrothers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Not really, unless you're someone that switches shoulders a lot. Then it's possible the buttock of a rifle might interfere with the mic. But this also depends on how well you're used to shooting with your non-dominant side. | Viper

      I wonder if the fit of these Sordins are the same as the MSA Sordin Supreme Pro X. I have both the Supreme Pro X and and Peltor Comtac V. The Sordins feel smaller on my ears which are narrow and long. The Sordins do put pressure on my ear, while the Peltors do not and are more comfortable for me.

      Peltor Comtac V - inside dimension of eaecups are 1 1/2 inches wide, 2 1/2 inches tall.
      MSA Sordin Supreme Pro X with gel cups: 2 3/4 inches tall and 1 3/4 inches wide.
      The size of the void in the Sordins decreases when worn because the gel cups spread out a lot. They feel smaller on my ears because of that. I haven't tried the Peltors with gel cups yet.

    I would like to thank you for your diligence and help with an issue I had when purchasing a peltor comtac v, I purchased the headset alone, than later purchased the mic, and down lead, later the PTT was purchased from CGS (comm gear supply), the rest was 3M Peltor products,once all items were in my possession I hooked them up to a wouxun kg-935g GMRS handheld radio 2 pin and from that moment I was having trouble communicating and receiving...ugh... I reached out to various companies and either got no response or not enough information to determine my issues...I came across your videos and thought it can't hurt to send an email, this all happened the weekend of Easter here in the United States a holiday weekend, not expecting any response until the work week or weeks later...to my SURPRISE! Instinct from the Recon Brothers sent me an email back hours later! With some pictures exchanged and more information from my purchased products you'al narrowed it to my lack of knowledge on how NATO and comtac operate here in the United States vs Europe... and thankfully you offer the item I needed and shipping to the US, because of how fast and how important you treat your customers or some blow off the street I will be purchasing my next upgrades to fulfill my needs and share my experience with you! That means alot to someone struggling with technology and is at a loss after spending several hundred dollars to not be able to use what it was intended for! I'm soon going to purchase another headset and other items and the Recon Brothers are my go to from now on!
    Cheers from the United States!

    I combine my Sordins with a "light-use" earplug to block an additional ~22db from the gun blasts.
    I then compensate the reduced hearing aid from the speakers+microphone by just increasing the volume to the second highest.
    Then you get good amount of sound coming from the environmental speakers but also increase the hearing protection. Also, you should double up anyways if you shoot in closed environments or when you risk getting bad headset placement because you run/move around a lot.

    It would be great if you had a PTT video like this to address things like amped PTT connections

    • @ReconBrothers
      @ReconBrothers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Might indeed be interesting.
      For those who don't know:
      Basically amped PTTs were introduced for radios that don't detect you are using a boom mic. Since this is very model and brand specific most manufacturers make their PTTs amped so you don't have any issues when using boom mics.
      However Sordin for example does not make amped PTTs so if you would go for this brand when it comes to the PTT you do need a radio that detects the boom mics.
      So basically the safest thing is to go for a radio that detects the boom mic, like it should. If you go for a radio that does not detect it, you might have a lot of work finding out what specific PTT system you need. (And there are quite a lot of civil use radios that do detect a boom mic.) I was wearing my Sordins for work 4-5 days a week in the middle of summer. The outside is water tight, but the foam inside can get saturated and allow sweat to accumulate on the electronics. They died on me in the middle of the day and I had to let them dry out. They seem to be fine since, but there is corrosion on the PCB and im afraid they will not survive further water damage.

    • @ReconBrothers
      @ReconBrothers  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, normally the Sordin headsets their electronics are completed coated so water can't get to it (At least that is on the once we have seen). You should even be able to swim with them under water for half an hour as long as you don't go deeper than one meter. So if you can check if the inside is indeed coated, there may be another problem you are facing. If that is the case I would suggest to contact them since they have a great repair service.

    • @Trippsy05
      @Trippsy05 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ReconBrothers Thanks for the response, but I have since contacted Sordin to be told that corrosion or failure due to user sweat is not under warranty. There is a waterproof coating on the PCB, but they stayed wet for so long that it actually failed and started to peel. I use hearing protection every day for many hours without a break. Sometimes I even have to wear it during lunchtime.
      I did plenty of research and just ordered a Peltor Comtac V as a replacement. From the images I could find, there is an inlay between the electronics and the speaker to prevent sweat from accumulating on the electronics.

    Do you find the comms and mic cables ever snag or just a nuisance when you not running comms? Ops Core AMPs look attractive because you can slim them done when not using comms. Also, can you double up on ear pro while still being able to hear radio chatter and your environment?

    • @ReconBrothers
      @ReconBrothers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not really no, the mic and cable can be easily put out of the way and then have a pretty low profile. They never snagged in any way. Only thing that might interfere, but that's always with a mic, is when shouldering a rifle on the side with the microphone (normally non-dominant), aiming can be difficult. But it's better to get used to it if you need to use a mic all the time.
      With doubling up on ear pro I guess you mean using ear plugs underneath? In that case, it depends on which system you use, the PELTOR has a mode that allows you to still hear everything. The SORDIN doesn't have such a thing. I Viper

      You need to remove the middle paddings of your helmet (i.e Ops Core Carbon SF Helmet, Crye Precision Airframe, Team Wendy EXFIL, Safariland Delta X) just so you’ll be able to wear your hearing protection underneath your helmet, if you don’t like to configure it via the side arc rails.
      Although it seems like a good idea to keep the headband, I would recommend sending it to a good reputable company to have it modified for configuration onto an arc rail.

      It's obviously too late to show, but we've tested this on several helmet systems in the past. It is possible when removing the center top padding of your helmet, but it's usually not very practical with the retention system. In many cases you aren't really able to close the retention, because everything takes up more space and also the microphone is a big hurdle. If you want to use a helmet with a headset, we'd highly recommend to actually mount it. I Viper
