Neerja Chowdhury is a journalist and author of How Prime Ministers Decide. In a conversation with Manisha Pande, she talks about her book that looks at the inner workings of Indian PMs from Indira Gandhi to Manmohan Singh. She speaks about aspects that set apart Indira Gandhi’s era as the PM. She says, “Indira Gandhi had the ability to take risks… and unlike her father, she was not ideological.” She narrates an incident where Gandhi told a UP leader, “Mera baap sant tha, main nahi hoon (My father was a saint, but I am not).”
Chowdhury says one “can only conjecture” where India and the Congress would have been if Sanjay Gandhi was alive. She delves into Arun Nehru’s revelation about the Bofors scam, who stopped Sonia Gandhi from assuming the charge of the Prime Minister in 2004 and how Manmohan Singh did not give up on the Indo-US nuclear deal.

Back when NL started, and it made a pitch for paid subscriptions, I took the lowest plans. I was in favour of the concept but wasnt accustomed to paying substantially that'd offset ad revenue for them. Then I tapered off, slowly taking my interest off politics and news as I saw I couldnt make any difference. After these many years seeing these guys survive and yearn away their youth and talent for less money for the cause of subscription driven journalism gives me hope that may be people will become accustomed if NL survives long enough. And may be one day there would be many more outlets doing this. But NL, you'd always be the one to write this history in India. Kudos to the team.

After 2004 election when congress had a majority, party decided Sonia Gandhi to be elected as PM, BJP was up in arms. All hell broke lose. Rahul, Priyanka, Sonia Gandhi were behind closed doors not talking to anyone. They came out of the meeting and declared Sonia Gandhi refuses to be PM. I remember as a young girl, when I was in remote villages in Karnataka 45 years ago Indira Gandhi being loved as 'their Indramma'. She was popular with masses without today's social media, because she would visit places and meet masses.

Most of the journalist I find have ideological positions and have biases towards personalities and parties(which is fine); but what I find strange is their lack of competence or to analyze the empirical evidences.

The public servants have decided they are not accountable to questioning, they won’t hold press conferences, they won’t hold debates in parliament, all the national media is bought out by friends of modi and they push endless drivel at people. How many journalists and activists are in jail without trial right now? The shrinking space for freedom is the time to raise alarms- how would anyone speak after we reach worst case scenario.
