Really proud of Amanda. I predicted this might be her breakthrough based on how she’s been playing all week but the first set had me doubting that. So nice to see young players coming into their own. Just a few years ago Osaka was in that same place. Amanda played so well and confidently. We’re never getting that Osaka/Barty match. For the last year every time they’re slated to meet Osaka loses the round before. Oh well. Osaka couldn’t find her first serves.

True. Osaka would really benefit from playing doubles. I know she likes to follow Serena as her inspiration but Serena had a lot more to her game than just the power from the baseline and serve. Serena has 14 doubles GS titles. It helps your singes game. But, I’m not surprised no one asks Osaka to play doubles because she doesn’t seem fully committed to tennis.

    • @barbaraforde9213

@@briany7658 Once hitting a drop shots, it also requires you to be ready to move and be ready for anything. She does not want to leave that baseline so she seldom if ever hits a drop shot. A lot of the time if she receives a ball falling towards the corners of the court, she will sometimes not even attempt to get it. She wants to win by standing on the baseline, hitting aces or nonreturnable serves. It takes more than that now because many of these girls have a lot of variety like Barty, Swatek Fernandez, Anisimova, etc. What worked when Osaka first won those tournaments will not work now.

The Two handed backhand of Amanda is impressive. It challenged Naomi on so many points. Wow. Lets be honest Naomi played too soft too relax this match and was not expecting her opponent of the day to hit the ball so hard. I will follow this lady. Naomi has a New challenger for the next slams in addition to Alep and Emma.

After the match, Osaka said ' she's not God and cannot win all the matches.' True, but this just shows where her current state is. She's been stumbling ever since that French open press fiasco last year. Congrats to Anisimova for the win, but Osaka really needs some work, maybe more practices? She's not just looking as deadly or determined as she was during her Aus open 2021 title run

I'm more of a pessimist and a realist, it remains to be seen if this is the new Amanda or if her old ways will start resurfacing when she starts losing again. When her mind and game is on point, her baseline game is at the upper echelon in the WTA right now. But when she was losing back then, she had some rather perplexing emotional outbursts on the court. Hopefully, those things are behind her and she maintains this level throughout the year.

Ever since Osaka admitted to her mental vulnerabilities, none of these girls are afraid of her. They’re all thinking that if they simply hang in there a little longer, Osaka will eventually crack. This is a competition. Vulnerabilities are like blood in the water to your opponents. She really played herself.

i dont agree with u. all her matches so far in australia this year showed really positive signs and she managed to fight back and win the matches even facing multiple breakpoints or down a game in round2. Here again she saved many breakpoints from 15-40 down. this match was honestly super close and Amanda had the better of it during tie break, she played her best tennis there and unfortunately there can only be one winner. Naomi needs more match plays definitely but wta today is super competitive anyone can beat anyone on a given day, just like muguruza losing to cornet the other day and barty losing to rogers in us open last year.

Even though I’m shocked Osaka lost I’m a little happy in a way. I really like to see players who prepare and win a warm up title take home the grand slam. It just seems like the proper reward for the work a player puts in. I think this lost will push Osaka to be better and to compete in the tour events and by that I mean really try to win them. Amanda played great, is coming in confident from the title win and I don’t see why she can’t go all the way.

Osaka said in her round 1 press conference that she hates practice and doesn’t see any meaning in it. That explains a lot about her results. You can’t be or stay the best without practicing more than everyone else. She hasn’t played a top player since last years Australian Open. She didn’t even do the warm up in Adelaide with real competition. Weird that she looks up to Kobe so much but doesn’t see the value he placed on practice.
