FIRST LOOK: Volvo EX30 - This £34k SUV Is The Fastest Accelerating Volvo Ever | Top Gear

  • This is Volvo’s smallest electric car ever: the new EX30 SUV. It’s also the fastest accelerating Volvo of all time, good for 0-60 in as little as 3.4 seconds. And yet Volvo insists this car also has the lowest lifetime CO2 footprint of any Volvo ever made.
    Building it creates 18 tonnes of CO2. That, plus its first 200,000km of driving produce ‘less than 30 tonnes’ of greenhouse gas, says Volvo.
    So it’s a serious car this: full of lots of recycled materials and an attempt to assuage your climate guilt. But it’s also desperate to appeal to younger buyers who are supposedly uninterested in new cars, and with a punchy price of less than £35,000, the Swedes reckon they have a fighting chance. Join Top Gear magazine’s Ollie Kew for an in-depth tour.

    Whoops, the single motor EX30 has the lithium iron (yes, not ion) phosphate battery, while the Extended Range and Performance versions have a lithium, nickel manganese and cobalt battery. Also, the single motor is RWD, obviously...

    • @nomoreheroes93
      @nomoreheroes93 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Your video title is a lie - the £34k variant isn't the fastest accelerating version? Also the battery spec bit is misleading, all three batteries are "lithium-ion", Nickel Manganese Cobalt is a type of Li-ion battery. A shame to see this so poorly researched, that's why more people watch Fully Charged etc these days.

      Both are lithium ion. The LFP vs NMC refers to the cathode chemistry - either lithium iron phosphate or Nickel-Manganese-Colbalt-Oxide.
      'Lithium-ion' refers to the fact they have a graphite-based anode.

      In Canadian dollars, that's $50-60k. That's a fail in Canada for such a small vehicle. There's more bang for the buck in North America elsewhere. However, if it's price parity with British pounds, ie $30-35k, this will be a hit. But I think this is wishful thinking. EVs in Canada sell in so much smaller volume than ICE vehicles because of the vast distances we have to drive (all of Britain will fit inside of a single Canadian central province). I'm pretty sure Volvo/Geely can't afford this price point for so few vehicles they'll end up selling over here.

    Very good price point for the base spec. Wish Singapore will get that one when this car arrives. 213 miles is literally all you need when end-to-end, the country is just 50 miles wide. Apart from the burying of essential controls into the screen, I think this could be a winner. Simpler, cheaper, EVs that are environmentally-conscious as possible, is what we need as the EV revolution pushes forth.

  • @tzeimet
    @tzeimet ปีที่แล้ว +23

    Just a heads up. NMC refers to the typical lithium-ion tech found in most western made EVs. The short range RWD Volvo has a LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery, the Long Range and AWD versions have NMC chemistry. NMC refers to the cathode material, it’s still a lithium ion battery.

    I think you have the battery information a bit mixed up. NMC is Li-Ion. I think you meant Lithium-Iron, or LiFeP04 for the larger batteries, which is also a type of lithium-ion battery. It's easy to get confused with these chemistries.

  • @davereedcouk
    @davereedcouk ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Something doesn’t add up about the chemistry bit there. The cheaper and less dense batteries are normally Lithium Iron Phosphate (note the Iron not ion, because all of these batteries use ions), which is using the element symbols Li Fe P, or LFP for short.
    The more dense and expensive batteries are the Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt batteries, with most of the extra cost coming from the more expensive elements.
    Its also worth noting that NMC batteries are normally only charged to 80-90% max to save battery life, whereas LFP are happy to go 100% each night, so the actual useable range often works out to be about the same.

    • @cartercolligan7445

The bigger one is NCM with lithium also, with bigger energy density, better range and more expensive. Maybe the video should be corrected?

    I cant wait to get this. In about two years time 🤩 Also i want to add i dont see an issue with moving side mirror controlls and temperature controls to the screen instead of physical buttons because in the 5 years i've had my current car i've only adjusted the mirrors twice. With all the parking aid this car has you shouldnt need to change the mirror settings more than once, when you first receive the car. And in regards to the climate/temperature controls, in modern cars like the EX30 the climate system is mostly automatic. You set a temperature that you enjoy, lets say 22 degrees, and the car will automatically cool or heat to stay at this temperature at all times. So again there is no need to change this setting once its set. To my knowledge it can even automatically controll the fan speeds aswell depending on how much air it needs to blow out to achieve the set temperature. Very different from my current Chevrolet Spark where there is no temperature you just have a dial for hot air and cool air, and you then have to fiddle it constantly yourself to try and reach a comfortable temperature 😆 If this was the case in the EX30 - which its not - then i would understand the want for physical dials.

    No HUD in front of the Driver? That's a huge step backwards! Heck, even my '16 Mazda has that. Having basic speed information in front of the driver's vision is essential to reducing driver vision fatigue

    Looks good, fair price for the lower specified. However , can never be on my list due to a touch screen for most options. I would need bi focal glasses, driving needs length, screen needs readers. Sorry, but bring back buttons and simple dials....much safer.

    Mums got a 2019 Volvo V90 since new. People massively overreact about the centre screen controls. Mums never complained, I’ve never had any issues, and when you’re talking about things like wing mirror controls, you shouldn’t be driving anyway. They have to put everything in the centre screen to save you money. Would you rather be given 2 grand or have some buttons?

    It's honestly ridiculous how much people go on about fast acceleration. Cars don't need to accelerate fast in normal road conditions and even bog standard EVs can to 0-60 in under 8 seconds.

    This is a similar size to an MG4 even though that's a hatch and this is an 'SUV'. But an equal spec is around £10,000 more (compared to Trophy long range). MG4 has buttons, has been out for a while (so is in a goodplace software wise etc.) To me MG4 is still on top but this is a good effort.

    I don't get why journalists bleat on about needing a dedicated button to change the cabin temperature on the move. When I bought my car almost three years ago, I set the temp to 22 degrees and haven't touched it since. Shame it doesn't have a proper speedo in front of the driver though which is just blatant cost cutting. Then again, at least it has indicator stalks (I'm looking at you Tesla)!
