Manual Gearboxes Are Back! Aston Martin Valour vs Porsche 911 S/T

- EVs and ever-stricter emissions regulations mean the manual gearbox is becoming rarer - and yet there is also a bit of a renaissance occurring. The £2.8m GMA T.50 is only available with a manual gearbox, the £2.2m Pagani Utopia can be had with two or three pedals (with most owners opting for the latter) and at the other end of the scale, Toyota is testing a manual gearbox for electric vehicles.
In-between (though still very much at the expensive end of the scale) we have these two: the £1m Aston Martin Valour and the £231k Porsche 911 S/T.
The Valour pairs a manual gearbox with Aston’s twin-turbo 5.2-litre V12 for the first time, and those mechanicals are clothed in retro-inspired carbonfibre bodywork. Just 110 will be made, at £1m-plus each.
As for the Porsche, you can look at it either as a 911 GT3 RS with a manual gearbox and without that wing, or as a GT3 Touring with the wick turned up. Either way, it marries an epic engine that revs to 9,000rpm, with a manual ‘box and lightweight clutch.
There’s still life in the ol’ stick shift then! And so, we sent the Aston and Porsche to some rather nice roads, together with Editor-in-Chief Jack Rix and Deputy Editor Ollie Kew, for a little celebration…

Name the greatest manual gearbox ever...
Porche 911
No one cares.
Honda S2000
Vauxhall Corsa Sting
@nymandalefarm4642 exactly manual cars are great if you can afford a high-strung track focused car, but for those of us who live in normal world not really relivant, I mean listen to the numbers he talks about.
"Manual gearboxes are back", ye great thanks for that, ridiculous
Imagine seeing the headline "Manual gearboxes are back" in the 80s/90s. I would be horrified.
It’s also PR hackery to say analog manual cars are back when they used to be the standard available to everyone. These features are now reserved for overpriced “collectible” playthings targeted at the grotesquely wealthy. I had nightmares about this future.
@@MarkVictorArnold Miata, GR86, Mustang, Corolla GR, WRX...list goes on
from super cheap to any level you want
Then when tesla started selling electric cars they should have been like: Electric cars are back!!! Since we had electric cars well over a 100 years ago
@@MarkVictorArnold yea the whole premise of the video is really dumb and annoying. Enthusiast ice cars, with manuals or big n/an engines, or really any kind of driving experience you want will always be available to people willing to pay 500k-1m. On the other hand, the variety of available enthusiast cars has thinned out for regular people and even normal sporty cars have become more expensive and commodified. I still think new cars are better in many ways but this video is dumb as shit
Spot on
Back only for the rich. The car industry these days reflect closely the watch industry ... Cheap quartz watches for the masses while mechanical watches are luxury items .... Electric cars for the common folk ... Cars with mechanical feel and engagement reserved for the rich. Do the "common" driving enthusiast have to suffer ? The only brands making anything remotely affordable and engaging are a couple of JDM brands and the prices of those cars are more and more out of reach. 😢
How can you forget the americans? Up until this point they made the Challenger and Camaro, while they still make cars such as the Blackwing Cadillacs, Mustangs and ofc the Corvettes. Btw all of those JDM cars are missing from Europe. GTR dead, WRX and the new Z werent even sold to begin with, GR86/BRZ and the 2 liter MX5 will also be killed off by the end of the year. So yeah, there arent really any JDM cars left. Also while on that note, Porsche will stop making the current gen 718 and Macan for Europe, TT is dead so is the R8. C63 became 4 cylinder and the new M5 became an SUV. Its really a sad time to live in. But hey, if you are a billionaire you have cars such as the Utopia, CC850, Tourbillion or the T50.
While i agree with you, I am not sure v12's were ever affordable for the masses. I couldn't afford an aston or 911 when i was younger, and i sure cant now.
That's why my Cayman is a 2008 5spd. May not be a "supercar" but on the little twisty back roads It's a blast and puts a huge smile on my face every time I take it out which is weekly. Where's Chriss Harris?
@@TexasRiverRat31254 I agree ..and that's why I hold on to an treasure my "relatively affordable" 2009 997.2 C2S. At the time of purchase a few years ago it cost around the same as what a GR Corolla or Civic type R costs today ! I'm from Canada so a 60k+cad before tax Corolla and Civic is crazy. And good luck getting one with all the dealerships' games. Car companies are making more than before. They just complain they don't make as much as during the pandemic but their numbers are still much higher than pre-pandemic levels ! As Morizo steps down from Toyota ... I fear all the fun car projects he started will soon be killed off for once again boring mass market commuters
The masses like to complain but they dont buy manual trans cars to support the industry.
The issue isn't even that there's no manual trans cars, it's that there's no sporty cars period.
Your argument doesn't really make sense or atleast your comparison. How do you make a gold watch with diamonds for the masses? Gold is expensive.
Aston martin was never for your average Joe. I salute them for making another manual trans car.
driving enjoyment means more than lap times, long live manual transmissons
The romance of dancing with your favorite car.
Agreed!
@StandingUpForBetter one of those lucky people better let Chris Harris thrash that Aston lol
My pov is that rhe everyday car can be automatic. There's nothing to be enjoyed blocked in a traffic jam with a manual gearbox. But for sure in our era should be the norm to have the choice of what to mount in the car (without these crazy opt prices)
Exactly
Manual gearboxes are back
You just need endless amounts of money to buy one lol
Nah, plenty of regular manufacturers have added manuals to their lineups… a resurgence for sure tho!
@@DreamDosageNo surprise since manuals are still cheaper to produce and maintain.
The Emira has a manual and I love it. Not very many mid engine cars with manuals left...
You can still get a Mustang with three pedals so I guess that’s something
Bullshit. You can import a piece of shit manual Renault anywhere in the world for a fraction of a price of a new Corolla.
I wouldn't call 2 limited edition high-end luxury sport cars (with a total production number < 2100) enough to representative "Manual Gearboxes Are Back" in title.
I think there's plenty of cars with manual gearboxes in the low end, my in-laws just bought a stick shift Fiat 500 -- While the norm for hypercars is to have automatic gearboxes with paddleshifters. So "Manual Gearboxes Are Back" specifically refers to the high performance segment.
Well said. Maybe we should think of it as "Manual Gearboxes Are Back - _In The (click)Bait Bucket."_
After all, TG doesn't exist for gearboxes, cars, or even car manufacturers. It only exists for _consumers._
Personally prefer the 911 S/T. Going to have to work hard if I ever want to afford something like that.
Silly that TG are pretending the 911 S/T is “just” £236k or whatever. Unless Porsche hand-pick you to buy one you’ll be paying half a million for one of these too.
So just get one of the previous generation 911's then. Like Clarkson has always said, the 911 is just the same car, over and over and over again. At least the Valour looks new (even though it's taking a lot of the style from the old V8 Vantage, the one from 1977. Not a complaint, just an observation 😉)
Not hard, just smart
That Aston rear end looks like the one from Porsche 959
that 911 looks really nicely planted, the Valour has lost that "dangerous, mean animal" look that the Victor had :(
Yeah I thought it was just me, but the victor is better looking
the victor really is my favourite
Valiant look bit more similar to the victor
The wheels… ick
It literally looks the Exact same 💀 what are you on
Imagine- New Vantage with a manual gearbox.
I can't see why Aston Martin can't do that. If I want auto, I'd buy a Mercedes-AMG GT easily.
If you have that kind of money, you can swap any car to Manual transmission.
They made 200 manuals of the 2021(pre facelift) Vantage
@@FAT8893 I'd still buy the Aston, lighter RWD, better balanced, more tail happy, better looking, more fun and also, more power. It only costs 5K more than a top spec GT63 too. It's free at that point.
@@F1ll1nTh3Blanks I thought AMG-GT is also RWD?
The 911st seems like the successor to the 911r
I'll take the S/T, please.
Hope the GTI lipstick can be optioned off.
I would imagine that you can get it painted however you like.
Looks allmost as hilarious as the BMW XM Red Label Lipstick around the Kidney Grille...😜
Looks like a throwback to the 2005 DB9 Le Mans race car. It had the lime green grill highlight or the red grill highlight.
Why do you hope that?
Are you worried you might see too many of these unattractive cars in your suburb, or are you shopping around for a new high-end sports car?
The S/T is £231,000… BEFORE the mark up
There’s no mark-up as they’re not for public sale - they’re only available on the Used market
@@neilturner6749 I’m sure the used number is not what they’re quoting
The AM looks like a baby from the Alien Resurrection monster in the front and a Porsche 959 in the back.
I love that these cars exist and I am genuinely grateful that we are living in an era where these cars are in production.
But let's not kid ourselves, the 911S/T is about $600K after the $300K MSRP and the $300K in Cayennes you need to buy to get an allocation. The Aston can not be much better, you'll need to outbid the other millionaires and billionaires at auction.
I can’t unsee the “👁️👄👁️” face. It’s like that one person you see at a party who’s standing in a corner, convincing themselves that they aren’t going to puke.
What's wrong with an Aston Martin in BRG without the red grill with "normal" rims. So sick of the million plus unobtainable cars, make something exciting for "common man".
People say money doesn't buy happiness...well car companies want to deny you any driving pleasure if you don't have a million dollars . The "peasants" don't get to have fun.
Then Aston wouldn't be special if anyone and everyone owned one. They're gonna become like Golfs.
@@magnustan841 There's a huge difference between upper-middle class people being able to buy them and being able to see them driven on the street versus only hyper-rich people being able to afford them and never seeing them outside of a concours event.
i have a suzuki swift going cheap
@@sartorialdriver6528 Kinda skill issue. They cost more money to develop than they sell, so they can't make it cheap because most people won't buy the manual. That's just the world we live in, enthusiasts are a dying breed. Just be happy these exist at all. Better to dream of something, than it not be there at all.
Cool, looks like a 70’s v8 vantage. An vantage rides around in our area. I really appreciate getting to see and hear it from time to time.
Oillie is really putting in overtime with the back to back videos! Bravo!
ASTON MARTIN keeps pulling it out of the hat What an absolutely Gorgeous and aggressive looking car without a doubt this car will stand the test of time
thats how its done!
Manuals are pure love.
Both cars are absolutely wonderfull, classy and nice to look at.
The Porsche is a beauty and the Aston the beast.
I hope this means another V12 Vantage manual is coming!
Honestly I much prefer 911 S/T all day everyday.
That Aston - OMG - perfect throwback to the original vantage! Well done 👍
For some of us manuals have never gone away. The manual in MX-5s are really good, last year I bought a 2016 Jaguar F-Type with a manual, even though they aren't as quick as the automatic ones. I live in a pretty rural part of New Hampshire, USA, manuals make sense here. But a million pounds? Yeah, no.
I 100% agree. People are in the comments complaining about the price, but if you want a manual sports car there are Z4s, Boxsters, 350zs, BRZs, MX5s, all kicking around for £5k.
Am I the only one that thinks the exterior is ugly.
It looks like it’s out of the 80s, late 70s
Yes you are
Yes.
Nope almost all of internet thinks the same it looks ugly
It has lost the proportions and the low stance that the Victor has
Good to enjoy on highways.
A year back I happened to see one on the road in Uganda and it passed me with a bee sound.
Got frightened and wondered what type of car was it but luckily enough I spotted it... 😁
I'm happy to know these exist. Nice work Mr Stroll! Would be awesome to see one of these one day. From certain angles it's just bonkers.
Please can you start uploading without the black bars? Would be good to get the widescreen bars removed for better full-screen on wide screens
BMW 3 Series Inline 6 naturally aspirated. Smooth as butter gearbox shifting.
👁️👄👁️
As soon as he lifted the bonnet. 😂😂🤣
Fantastic work getting these two cars together
That is a very nice looking Ford Mustang Aston Martin built.
The Mustang copied the Vantage from the 70's
That Astons front end looks like Leepu was one of the designers when they drew the sketches. Still an awesome car. Manual 911 would be my choice.
So. I was offered a Valor a few months ago. A beautifully and lavishly pre-specced car that someone backed out on. The sticker was $2.1MM here in the US.
Beautiful Aston V12 Manual 🥲 & PORSCHE NEVER SLEEPS TY FOR STAYING TRUE TO THE MANUAL GAME.
I actually quite like the look of it. Especially the head lights
Great to see! I've had about a dozen cars in my 24 years of driving. They've all been manual with my current one, an F-type V6 2018, being the best package at its price point in terms of performance, theatrics, handling and SOUND!
I like the part where he says "classic British understatement" while pointing to the back of the car.
minute 3:20, there is a UFO FLYING BY. cilindrical
Cylindrical... Like a plane?😂
Cylindrical or cigar shaped....one of the common types seen ...good catch @hypnotubenews
@@TheManinblack1011 yeah, and you can even see it coming through the clouds
nice to see aston getting back to there Ford roots. This is the most beautifull mustang I've ever seen
Their, or is that how Americans spell it?
There their they're.
Beautiful has just one L. Much like the word 'halfwit'.
Bros never seen an 80's vantage.
Top Gear online crushing it recently.
Buy a lotus Emira, I feel the same thing everyday for half the price.
i do think manual boxes are best with smaller displacement high revving engines that both makes you use it and in more menagable speeds
As an American...you want to get me excited? Sell a normal sub-$25K car in the U.S. with a manual transmission...and I don't mean a sports car.
The 2024 Nissan Versa has a 5 speed manual and starts at $16,680 msrp.
2023 impreza was $19,975. for 2024, it's $22,959 for an impreza. The Corrolla & Mazda 3 just stopped producing manual trans in 2023.
If you keep waiting there will be no options left. Unfortunately i have a feeling your more likely to complain about it on the internet then Buy a car.
@@pauliewalnuts240 You're*. Learn to spell if you're going to run your mouth at strangers on the internet.
Most English people aren't bothered about americans.
@@procatprocat9647 Most English people liked it that Americans came over int the 1940s and took care of the German threat. I've been watching videos of the cream of British womanhood stumbling around mostly naked and drunk on their fat asses in Manchester and London, watched over by predatory Muslim men. When the empire dies it REALLY dies.
The umbrella mounted in the trunk is such a funny yet silly idea. how am i gonna get there when it's pouring? You'd think the british woulda thought about that twice. Hilarious gimmick though
That Aston Martin looks so much like the Hyundai N Vision 74. Never thought I would say this one day.
Your vibe is infectious, love watching your content!
The S/T every single day of the week! Having said that my 2006 997 C2 Manual gives me 90% of the fun factor as the 911 S/T PLUS it's absolutely an up and coming classic Porsche 911! Every single drive in my 997 is an event I absolutely love it!
Aston Martin is making some of the best looking cars lately (past few years actually)
Those rims are something else. Never seen a design like that before. Definitely sets it apart.
Wow, that's great news!! Except these cars aren't for the mass, but the top 1% of the top 1%. This video is irrelevant.
Am I the only one that thinks the exterior is ugly
It’s no One77 that’s for sure.
It doesn’t scream “Aston Martin”, yet it’s certainly not ugly, just not what you’d expect for 2 million
Valour looks like an Elantra N front end 😬
I think some rectangular headlights would be better since it's already clearly mimicking vantages of old with that boxy look.
Really? That’s looks really nice
Last manual gearbox, last V12 V10 V8 etc etc, brilliant marketing which has been going for many years now. Just wondering when will actually be a very last one, or will it be 😃
The Valour from the rear almost looks like a modernised 959.
I could live with this on Sunday night TV… this good 👍🏻
when i say the Aston at first i tought it was some kind of collaboration with Lancia , it looks like some mixup of the 037 and an Aston. Amazing looking car !
That shot from the Porsche spoiler. Wow!
So glad they built that car. I remember when the prototype was shown, and really wished cars like that/this came back..
Two of the best cars offered in 2024.
That Aston is absolutely stunning. I love the retro design and it sounds great. 👌🔥
Always happy to see good ol manny in cars
Man the Aston looks stunning. What a shame its so limited
It looks like the people at Aston Martin wanted to design the best looking modern Mustang they possibly could. And honestly I’m here for it. And I say that as a fan of both the Ford Mustang and Aston Martin.
0:50 insane shot
That 911 S/T is amazing and the one to have if you had to choose between these two.
The Valour looks amazing!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
one of those Astons will be for sale in Dupont Registry 6 months after they release.
Wow. So good looking. This is not understated in any way. Third pedal is great. Doesn’t matter if the hedge fund owner can’t drive stick because he probably won’t drive the car.
Great review. Could you please provide location details for that road! Cheers
its a vantage with boxed wheel arches! cool
While I really loved it at first sight, the more I looked at it, the more it looked out of proportion.. I guess I have to see one in person now to make up my mind!
these are absolute Top Gear Boxes!
If you "take off" the duck tail of the Valour it kinda looks like an old 911 profile. Really a cool car
Best looking car out there. Kudos to AM for not following the idiotic design trend of super slim lights. AM masters design.
That shade of blue looks amazing on the Porsche! I love the tail of the aston, but I don't like the front. Too much going on, very un-Aston like actually. The Porsche just looks so timeless and graceful. There's a reason why the have been using that shape for so long. It just works so well.
1975 Pontiac Firebird inspired rims on the Valour.
Round headlights. How refreshing.
Oh my God
That Porsche is absolutely stunning
That Aston rear end looks like a very famous Porsche…🤫
All the best to everyone
Love the color! Save the Manual Transmissions.
Why does Aston make such a sensational car limited edition? Other than the DBX, all Astons look pretty similar. Adding this to their range would be outstanding!
The front end would be perfect if the shape of the headlights was not a circle but a unique shape.
Manual gearboxes are back !
Didn't even realise I was watching Top Gear lmao, felt like a random guy doing this
Well it badass if anything im forward to seeing what there WEC LMh car can do next year ✌️
I love this car. I just wish I was rich enough to buy one. Thank you.
I,m in love with that Aston.
It was a mistake letting us hear the vacuum sounding Valour, then cutting to the ferocity of the Victor.
Man if I had crazy money I’d buy both of these
The comparative review would have been nice to see as an all in one.
When it cold opens to Ollies face instead of Dans 😭
when you see a wheel move in the hands of the driver, u know its good !!!!
It's crazy how AM made a modern looking 959 before Porsche did.
Ford Mustang in the front, Shelby cobra Daytona at the black.
If anyone specs that car that need to watch Ricky zoom the day before
Johnny 5 is alive!
I love that Aston but who the hell optioned those colors
..and yet, not one reference to a 'phallus, a missed Clarkson-esque editorial opportunity
