In my prosess story i got kurt order the coin guard to get out the royal hall and spoil everything about Coup d etat to constantin and de sardet in peace
Man everytime i tried talking to Kurt for completing his quest he said I was too busy doing something else...but I wanted to finish his quest so why couldn't I do it?!
The coup detat was one of the best plot changes i've experienced in a video game for years. Luckily i always do all sidequests in videogames before continuing the main quest so Kurt sided with me. I'm very impressed how relationships with your companions can affect the game in Greedfall.
@@wasteman3259 IKR, all over the Steam forums people were bitching about the sidequests and I love them. I suspect the Witcher fanboys were out in force. I'm sorry but, polish aside, I much prefer Greedfall. Better writing, better voice acting, stronger story, more interesting world, more in-depth RPG mechanics it's just the bugs and jankyness which taints this game slightly.
This scene makes me want to travel back in time to 1997, find myself after immediately witnessing Aerith’s death scene, and slap 11 year old me across the face while screaming, “YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT GRIEF IS!!”
I was so horrified when this ended up happening to me. I was all over the sidequests and companion quests doing them like crazy but then I realized I was well over lvl 20 and I hadn't even met Aphra yet. (I'd seen people with her at 15) So I started doing the main quests to advance them more. I literally planned to start Kurt's quest right after I told Constantine about my heritage. Then this happened. I was so blindsided. I was freaking out the entire time hoping this wasn't so and Kurt would be like "Lol, jk I'm with you" after I spared him but no. I hadn't seen it coming at all, I actually thought it wasn't preventable until I made connections to the phantom regiment and realized it was my fault. Immediately reloaded my last save file which was outside of the door to the throne room and noped tf outta there back to my house to talk with Kurt. Everything's fine now but I still can't look at him the same way. Also kind of funny because after the betrayal by Solas in DAI I vowed to keep a close eye on my companions and overanalyze their behaviours. Kurt was the last person on my mind to betray me. I was suspecting Petrus and Vasco more.

Although none of that mattered in the end for me, as I chose to join Constantin. He was the only character who never used me, who genuinely cared for me no questions asked, and just as I was twisted this way and that by all the factions he was too.

Theleme and the bridge alliance were unabashed racists, the coin guard was RIDDLED with corruption, the natives never truly accepted me and were never grateful for all I had done for them. The only faction I liked was the nauts, I think I identity with the outcast face tattoo kind of group xDD
I think that’s why the writers picked Kurt to be the first companion to “betray” you-he’s such a loyal person, you’d never see it coming. Except...you’re not the only people he’s loyal too. So what happens when a deeply loyal person is forced to choose one at the death of the other? In this case he’s either able to reconcile and prioritize his loyalties, or he can’t and plummets to self destructive despair. It’s not really a simple or easy choice either-he’s known you for years. He’s known his faction for more. He taught you, but you’re not the only person he’s taught/recruited/feels responsible for. He loves you, but you’re not the only life he wants to protect. You hired him. They own him. He gave De Sardet years of his life, but in this play through, the main character couldn’t give him an hour or two. And no matter what, people he cares about are dying today-and he will undoubtedly have to raise his sword on some of them. It sucks. And it’s not helped by Torsten intentionally taking advantage of his trust and manipulating his loyalty while expecting him to fail and treating him as nothing more than a disposable distraction against the main character. It’s gross. It’s all great and terribly gut wrenching drama, because he *is* a very good, very loyal person (probably one of the more ethical in your party-he’s alignment is a solid “neutral-good”) to whom truly terrible sickening things have happened too-things designed to unravel a person’s sense of worth and autonomy entirely so that they are nothing more than an obedient, loyal weapon. Good character writing distinguishes between what a character wants, and what a character needs. This character wants to believe that his faction and its leader still has some ghost of the old values of the guard he clings too, and he roots his identity in being loyal to that. What he needs is to recognize that loyalty to his own integrity and character is equally, if not more, valuable than loyalty to his faction, and to reclaim his autonomy rather than forfeit it in the name of loyalty. If that happens, he becomes quite the reforming force within his own faction; changing it to what it should be rather than blindly following what it is. He also needs to learn Torsten is a total manipulative douche, and you’re the one who’s there for him, but that’s all actually secondary. I actually think Kurt, the one character who can betray you, is simultaneously the only character to become 100% truly loyal to you. He is the only character whose tested with sifting the greatest loves and values of his life and is forced to choose. None of your other companions are so tested. Vasco even says in Torsten’s Office, “welp! Glad I wasn’t put in that position!” If any other companion was put in a similar predicament at low affinity, I’m pretty sure they’d all blow you a kiss before shooting you in the face. I think Kurt was unique among them that even when put in that situation, he ultimately couldn’t and turned on himself instead. So when he actually does choose you, not only is he being truly straight up 100% consistent with his true character and ethics, he’s also 100% become your Garrus Vakarian, Arthur Morgan, “ride or die” boy for life. He is forced to choose between his greatest loyalties that have defined his entire life, and ends up standing next to you.

This was put in the game so you get a different playthrough depending on what you do. It's not a punishment, just another version of the story. When everything goes well, it's boring.
In the end, he still loved you too much to kill you. Just not himself. 😭 Honestly seeing this and knowing how much loyalty means to this character, I honestly don’t think he planned on surviving this. Like, had you never stepped forward to challenge him to a duel (did he assume you would?) and he had you all shot right then and there, I see it playing out the same way with your gun. He was forced into a situation in which two parties he held strong attachments too were at odds, and no matter who he sided with, he’d have to betray the other, and people he cared about would probably die. If he really wanted you dead, he could have just shot you/had you shot like several times. But he couldn’t go through with his orders in the end, and ended up turning the gun on the only thing in the room he wasn’t loyal too. 💔 It’s so sad. Especially in play throughs where you do his loyalty missions first, which force him to deal with the question of being a puppet vs. having a mind of your own, and who really deserves his loyalty. And in this play through where you don’t, he’s even wearing the Ghost Regiment armor...a dreadful sign of resignation to a past he couldn’t escape. And man is his backstory t-r-a-g-I-c. Especially the last one where it’s implied he’s a survivor of chronic sexual abuse. For all he’s survived, he’s actually a really good person. He was placed in a terrible situation by a commander who used him, and he chose his first loyalty over his later and destroyed himself over the heartbreak of it. It’s worse when you learn Torsten expected his sentiments towards you to get in the way and planned around his predicted failure. Be nice to Kurt folks, he’s been through enough.
I would give Kurt the world. I knew things would happen differently according to loyalty levels, but this? I never. Ever. Would have imagined this. What makes it worse is, not only learning how he was abused, but that if you win him over, he's so soft with you. He fumbles his words when he asks you to meet him, he full stutters when you propose, he's so worried about losing you, and his smile is so happy and warm when he realizes you're serious. This hurts my heart so badly. Rest in peace, Sweet Kurt.
i was so shaken by this, that my 2 year old daughter came running to me, gave a kiss, and ask why mommy was so sad. this is how much impact this scene had on me...

Mrs Gamer My apologies 😂😂 Those missions are a lot of work in the game, I guess for me I can’t stand the thought of a follower turning on me, so I do them out of paranoia more then anything xD, don’t want anyone stabbing my heart while I sleep at the campfire xD
Yet another reason why I wish DeVespe Conspiracy wasn't just a late game affair. Imagine dealing with the DeVespe's treachery whilst also dealing with this drama
Usually i'm someone who likes to ignore Side Quests and only do the Main Quest,for the Immersion. But this Game has just a way to connect the Side Quests with the Main Quest that i did all of the Side Quests before playing the Main Story to the End. Good thing i did it,i would have died if i had to kill Kurt
It’s so cool that the decisions you make in the game can affect whether certain characters will actually die. I’m not used to characters having plot armor or time limits on quests! This game is awesome.
this was my first outcome so I redid it. but somehow I still feel this is the outcome that should've happened to my story. it's so tragic that's it's more realistic, considering I ignored Kurt's quests and him. kurt is broken-I can see y hed do this considering hes like a slave to us, and later figuring out his past of experiencing sexual abuse by trusted ones. I am female de sardet, and I always felt he showed a romantic love for me right away that I ignored for other things, even though he was my my loyal long term friend, which makes it all the more tragic. and him saying I'm proud of you (tears) as his student surpassed him and I think he started to see de sardet as better than him, and felt he couldn't fit in anywhere-with me who didnt return his love and who had surpassed him, or with the guard that abused him and made him feel like a bad person.
@@ZegetaX1 If you talk to him after his last quest with Hermman and ask him what really happened, he tells you that he was like Reiner, Hermman beat them all, humiliated them, but unlike Reiner's crew Hermman would come in their rooms at night. Aka heavily implying that he was sexually abused as well. Greedfall did an incredible job with his character imo, there's only one other time I set aside my PC and cried over a character story like that before.
@@ZegetaX1 did his companion quests. and seeing what de sardet tells kurt when he betrays her (other people's videos) when she claims he cant handle that she surpassed him. he comments on it at some point I think
I agree with much of what you said. I fell in love with Kurt in my first run (as a player, other than as a character), so I did all his quest and got the best ending - and anyway I was crushed by his sad story, childhood, and situation. Then I went on youtube to see the other outcomes and when I saw how bad the coup could have gone I was completely annihilated by this scene. My sweet big boy. Fortunately, there are fanfics and now I'm losing myself in reading them and writing MY version of the story :-)
There is a trick how you can duplicate your unique equipment while Kurt betrays you, give him everything you want to duplicate and equip him with it before you go to Constantin! Let him be equipped with the unique equipment, he should not betray you but he must warn you and come back to your party! Then you have all the equipment twice! Once in your inventory and once with what you have equipped Kurt! You can only do this once as far as I know, so think carefully about what you want to duplicate
The fact that everyone was mortified about Kurt dying while I sat there with my jaw dropped because my man Vasco got hit on his nape and literally nothing else
He sided with me on my play through but it never made sense to me that kirt would actually go through with it even if his respect for you was low. Doesn’t seem to fit the character, especially the way he reacted to the ghost camp. I was expecting his reasoning to have something behind it like”your too weak to lead” but he clearly didn’t like the order and did it anyway apparently.
Well, the ghost camp mission is crucial for avoiding this AFAIK, and its what changes his mind. The Ghost camp really shaken his loyality towards the Guard, while De Sardet rose up in his eyes as someone worth of loyality. But if he never found out about ghost camp, this feels really in character. The game is really well written.
OMFG WHAT?! I romanced Kurt in my canon playthrough and then in another playthrough executed him for the trophy, I had NO idea he turns the gun on himself if you spare him!!!! After everything he's been through then only way out for him was this! I'm replaying it right now and romancing him again, I'm gonna imagine my Celeste de Sardet hugging him extra tight 😭😭
I remember getting this. This was my first type of rpg game like this, I never thought there would be actual consequences to my actions (or lack thereof), so when I had this happen I was completely blindsided. I spared him thinking maybe I could convince him to turn to our side, then when he shot himself… god that was the first time in a game where I was genuinely caught so off guard, after this cutscene I paused for like 10 minutes just for it to sink in. Greedfall isn’t a 10/10, but it will always have a place in my heart solely due to this scene changing my perspective in rpg games so completely.

Curiosity got the best of me. Fortunately, this didn't happen to me and we stayed friends but I wanted to know what might happen if he betrays and found this video. I regret watching because now I can't look at him the same :(
i regret watching this just before going into work. when Kurt... does what he does at the end, i screamed and started crying. I've never seen this in my gameplay because i always prioritized his side quests over anything else. my De Sardet would have joined him in death rather than continue (i would have reloaded the save or started over).
OMFG WHAT. I got the other option in the game BUT OMFG WHAT. I thought him a scumbag for the possibility of betrayal, but in the end he remained loyal choosing to die over killing us.
reminds me of Mass Effect's Samara killing herself instead of having to kill her daughters. Good thing that game taught me loyalty and side missions are important before main quests...

Yeah, no Kurt and I were friends by the time this happened. I had no idea... I was friends with all of them because I decided to be a decent human being.
Mass effect taught me well. Luckily, I prevented this betrayal but after the coup i seldom used Kurt on my party. Unless it it's related to coin guard storyline/side quest. lol

Same I always to side quest first before main quest so I can see the side stories and get stronger before I move on.
This game has some of the best written side quests and none are fetch quests

Same. Mass Effect taught me that you must always do loyalty missions first before main missions.
Usually i'm someone who likes to ignore Side Quests and only do the Main Quest,for the Immersion.
But this Game has just a way to connect the Side Quests with the Main Quest that i did all of the Side Quests before playing the Main Story to the End.
Good thing i did it,i would have died if i had to kill Kurt

It’s so cool that the decisions you make in the game can affect whether certain characters will actually die. I’m not used to characters having plot armor or time limits on quests! This game is awesome.
As someone who romances Kurt every. Single. Playthrough. This was mortifying. I may or may not have cried. 😅🥺😢😭

I was friendly with Kurt so I didn't get this but from a story perspective, this is probably more impactful.
You have to finish his first two side missions first before this, his friendship level is secondary.
this was my first outcome so I redid it. but somehow I still feel this is the outcome that should've happened to my story. it's so tragic that's it's more realistic, considering I ignored Kurt's quests and him. kurt is broken-I can see y hed do this considering hes like a slave to us, and later figuring out his past of experiencing sexual abuse by trusted ones. I am female de sardet, and I always felt he showed a romantic love for me right away that I ignored for other things, even though he was my my loyal long term friend, which makes it all the more tragic. and him saying I'm proud of you (tears) as his student surpassed him and I think he started to see de sardet as better than him, and felt he couldn't fit in anywhere-with me who didnt return his love and who had surpassed him, or with the guard that abused him and made him feel like a bad person.

@@ZegetaX1 If you talk to him after his last quest with Hermman and ask him what really happened, he tells you that he was like Reiner, Hermman beat them all, humiliated them, but unlike Reiner's crew Hermman would come in their rooms at night. Aka heavily implying that he was sexually abused as well. Greedfall did an incredible job with his character imo, there's only one other time I set aside my PC and cried over a character story like that before.

I agree with much of what you said. I fell in love with Kurt in my first run (as a player, other than as a character), so I did all his quest and got the best ending - and anyway I was crushed by his sad story, childhood, and situation. Then I went on youtube to see the other outcomes and when I saw how bad the coup could have gone I was completely annihilated by this scene. My sweet big boy. Fortunately, there are fanfics and now I'm losing myself in reading them and writing MY version of the story :-)

There is a trick how you can duplicate your unique equipment while Kurt betrays you, give him everything you want to duplicate and equip him with it before you go to Constantin! Let him be equipped with the unique equipment, he should not betray you but he must warn you and come back to your party! Then you have all the equipment twice! Once in your inventory and once with what you have equipped Kurt! You can only do this once as far as I know, so think carefully about what you want to duplicate

Holy shit I did NOT expect that at all. That's so extreme.
He sided with me on my play through but it never made sense to me that kirt would actually go through with it even if his respect for you was low. Doesn’t seem to fit the character, especially the way he reacted to the ghost camp. I was expecting his reasoning to have something behind it like”your too weak to lead” but he clearly didn’t like the order and did it anyway apparently.
Well, the ghost camp mission is crucial for avoiding this AFAIK, and its what changes his mind. The Ghost camp really shaken his loyality towards the Guard, while De Sardet rose up in his eyes as someone worth of loyality. But if he never found out about ghost camp, this feels really in character. The game is really well written.
OMFG WHAT?! I romanced Kurt in my canon playthrough and then in another playthrough executed him for the trophy, I had NO idea he turns the gun on himself if you spare him!!!! After everything he's been through then only way out for him was this! I'm replaying it right now and romancing him again, I'm gonna imagine my Celeste de Sardet hugging him extra tight 😭😭

I remember getting this. This was my first type of rpg game like this, I never thought there would be actual consequences to my actions (or lack thereof), so when I had this happen I was completely blindsided. I spared him thinking maybe I could convince him to turn to our side, then when he shot himself… god that was the first time in a game where I was genuinely caught so off guard, after this cutscene I paused for like 10 minutes just for it to sink in.
Greedfall isn’t a 10/10, but it will always have a place in my heart solely due to this scene changing my perspective in rpg games so completely.
This was a fantastic twist.

Curiosity got the best of me. Fortunately, this didn't happen to me and we stayed friends but I wanted to know what might happen if he betrays and found this video. I regret watching because now I can't look at him the same :(
i regret watching this just before going into work. when Kurt... does what he does at the end, i screamed and started crying. I've never seen this in my gameplay because i always prioritized his side quests over anything else. my De Sardet would have joined him in death rather than continue (i would have reloaded the save or started over).
Thank God for Mass Effect. I learned my lessons a long time ago. Lol
OMFG WHAT. I got the other option in the game BUT OMFG WHAT. I thought him a scumbag for the possibility of betrayal, but in the end he remained loyal choosing to die over killing us.
reminds me of Mass Effect's Samara killing herself instead of having to kill her daughters. Good thing that game taught me loyalty and side missions are important before main quests...

Mass effect taught me well. Luckily, I prevented this betrayal but after the coup i seldom used Kurt on my party. Unless it it's related to coin guard storyline/side quest. lol
