I’ve said it before in the girl boss video and I’ll say it again: I think people in general are “obsessed” with public drama/scandal/scammers because they like to watch drama that isn’t happening to themselves. Seeing celebrities in drama also sometimes makes the public feel better about themselves since they see that the celebrities involved aren’t as perfect as the public perceives them to be.
It might seem like a stretch, but I think this also explains why many people love watching thriller or horror films. Mishaps are entertaining (or at least quenching our curiosities) when they are not happening to you and when you are at the safe distance.
One of my favorite parts of my high school Latin class was learning about how a lot of poets threw shade in their poetry. They were gossipy & petty people just like us 😌
Yes, we tend to think we are so unique and special when in reality we have been for thousands of years very similar to each other. We have more in common with other people than we would like to admit. Hopefully this makes us more understanding towards each other.
I always found it interesting that the public is so obsessed with celebrities when in reality a lot of us “normal” people are a lot more interesting than these manicured personalities. I think people are starting to realize this with TikTok
Are they more interesting? I feel like what’s most popular on TikTok is the same as celebrities, beauty, youth, drama, entertainment. It’s just the latest medium through which people can get famous, it’s not that they aren’t famous or celebrities imo. And it creates more of the illusion of it being your own “personal” celebrity, because it’s not always clear who in the wider society would be familiar with them
I also believe it gives ppl more power, like they can bully someone out of the app or know they got fired from their jobs, etc...and you might never get to see that "normal" person again so you dont have to take responsibility of how far you acted on their situation/gossip. Like cancel culture actually works on them unlike celebrities that don't lose a lot.

And so many celebrities are just normal-ass people. When they aren't on TV, they do what everyone else does. They play video games, cook dinner, brush their teeth. Just like everyone else.
I think it's important to note that Monica Lewinsky has spent 2 DECADES (after hiding under a rock for ten years, healing and doing the work) speaking out about what happened to her and personally clawed her reputation back. She is an example of self advocacy that still to this day gets scoffed at by some because of moralizing.. She was a 22 year old baby who was taken advantage of by the most powerful man in the world. Full stop. The fact that she has managed to take control of her own narrative (while not completely but certainly a great deal) is NO SMALL FEAT.

Honestly it kinda creeps me out that people are able to just follow someone around and take photos then sell said photos to make money. Also don’t even get me started on photos of celebrities kids I’m so glad that so many celebrities have advocated and worked hard to get kids faces covered or blurred. Also can we judge someone based on them as an individual not their family. My grandparents say the most outrageous racist, sexist and, homophobic things I’ve ever heard. But they are also 90 and quite frankly I don’t feel like explaining to my grandma that a woman isn’t a h00ker because she dyes her hair and wears makeup.

Fantastic video!!! However, I feel like Chrissy Teigan was a bad example here. She as a 26yr old adult (c. 2011) told a 17yr old to “take a dirt nap” and “go to sleep forever” which shouldn’t be brushed off because someone else made choices that were even more repulsive. Teigan blocked Stodden on Twitter after she publicly apologized to Stodden which speaks volumes about how much she actually cared about the situation in my opinion.

I feel like celebrity gossip is a type of escapism. Even though I avoid reality TV, I still follow news relating to celebrities like Taylor Swift and Florence Pugh because I want to keep tabs on them. I usually don't like speculating about celebrities, however. But the Don't Worry Darling drama sucked me in!
Same, but the opposite for me. I like to watch reality competition shows like Big Brother or Crime Scene Kitchen as an escape. I think everyone kinda has that one thing that makes them think "at least I can forget about my problems", whether it be reality TV or celebrity gossip or Bridgerton.
I think it goes hand in hand with the "at least it's not happening to me"/"these rich and famous people aren't better than me after all" mentality that draws interest in it as well.
The celebrities feuds (true or not) can last for YEARS -if not a decade or more- in the cover of magazines, and be talked nonstop like the one between Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Bieber, Selena, Hailey, Brad and Angelina... many of us know so many stuff about celebrities that we learned against our own will. Time to stop. I don´t want to know ANYTHING about the Kardashians and their scandals so they stay relevant and in people's mouths. Enough was enough a long time ago.
At my literature class we were given task to make report on Pushkin, there were plenty topics in his biography info I was sure would be covered by my classmates. And I decided not to be repetitive and research for his love romances that somehow influenced his poetry. During my report my teacher shut me after I named the topic and said that it was inappropriate and shameful to read gossips. Never had a chance to start, got C. I am so happy the internet later proved me again that little tea never hurt nobody and it's totally okay.
oh god, I'm from Russia and like we've got a whole cult of Pushkin, and literature teachers are especially into it. But! In my school we had a really chill teacher, despite that fact that she was really old and somewhat expected to be more strict and serious. She told us A LOT about his drama, romance, as well as other poets'. Also she told us about one time, when she and her class went on excursion to the place where Pushkin had been living for some time, and there they conducted a spiritual séance 😳😳😳 She was really into magical stuff and we did divinations (?) around New year and Christmas, that was lit. Sorry if I made mistakes, I'm not really sure that I've used of the tenses properly

Honestly it’s very easy to tell people to stop watching celebrities as entertainment, but this is not an easy world to live in. Quarantine alone has affected a lot of people‘s mental health, and we all know there are several systemic issues across the world. So sometimes people need an escape and celebrity gossip is constantly pushed to us

Celebrity gossip isn’t my form of escapism for my personal or societal problems (I’m a fantasy novels and video games kinda gal) but escapism overall is something so many seek when the world (their personal one or the wider one) is a stressful or unpleasant place.
sure but everyone has a head and brain for themselves to think and choose what media they use as escapism. i personally don’t think that consuming stuff that dehumanizes people and often just are blatant lies is fair to use. it’s a very privileged way to think about this, because most only see the impact that stuff has on themselves, like isolation through a pandemic and then just do what they want to make them alone feel better. this kind of media is part of the problem because nobody respects another living thing as unconditionally as themselves and it goes on and on because nobody wants to really think critically of the things that they are doing even if it’s not really nice
there are so many more (useful) ways to get to escape from the real world... Go outside and explore the nature, read a fucking book, learn something new, do sports, make music, cook, paint, write stories, meet friends, watch a movie/tv show etc. And out of all these beautiful things some ppl choose to engage in celebrity gossip. How...? also i feel like bc of celebrity gossip some people are forgetting to fact check their sources and to not jump into any conclusions when the information hasn't been confirmed yet

If I see a celebrity I admire just living their life in public, no I didn't. They're not on the clock. Go see them at meet and greets, when they actually want all that attention
Rick Astley said in a documentary that he liked his kind of fame - he can sell out stadiums in the UK, but he can also get a beer in a pub and be recognized by maybe one person. If I ever got famous (and boy is that a long shot), that's what I would want: good at my 'famous thing,' but still able to do normal people things

I find It fascinating the fact that abuse, extreme violence and sexual missconduct are considered gossip. I think that we as a public sometimes confuse morbid curiosity with interest in gossip, and documentaries and TV shows like Dahmer or House of Hammer can dehumanize this narratives and make it easier for the public to normalize that point of view, talk about a crime in a light hearted way. I see myself sucked into that sometimes. Anyway, I know I love your videos but also, I just realized I really like your face.
iirc "donutgate" blew up because ariana licked donuts in protest of "childhood obesity" and generally yelling about how fat americans were. because licking the donuts would... stop anyone else from being able to eat them and therefore get fat, i guess? that was what made it truly gross to me, rather than just obnoxious customer behavior.

hey! amazing video as usual, small correction that stuck with me but the sydney situation actually took place in the pacific northwest! one of the elements that was also being discussed was that it is in the often white liberal paradises that we traditionally don’t think of as conservative have pockets within that political alignment. she’s not a southerner and getting roped into that stereotype and ideology of “ignorant redneck” can be harmful for those in the southeast trying to do good work within the community.

36:23 … a good point actually. this reminds me of the media treatment towards harry styles compared to olivia wilde in terms of their relationship. olivia is hated on, scrutinized but harry’s reputation remains in tact because he’s… well harry styles. they’ve both contributed to a negative act, so why is she getting all the scrutiny? yes they supposedly started their relationship while olivia was still engaged, but let’s not forget that if that’s true harry most definitely knew about the relationship and still continued to peruse an affair. this among many situations just goes to show the public’s immoral choice of scrutinizing women in scandals, while leaving the men in them basically unharmed.

I will say re: apologies *specifically* about racial slurs or other harmful words aimed at a group (like the Renata Ri story mentioned), an apology will not undo that kind of harm. Apologizing for being a asshole to a waiter vs apologizing using a word that is targeted at/against a group (even if it wasn't intended in that way) warrant two different responses justly so. I do agree that it is up to the group, and therefore, an apology for using a racial slur should be up to said group to determine if they receive, accept, or even acknowledge it.
About the science of why people gossip, since you didn't go there in the history portion: People gossip, because it has been beneficial to our species to know what's going on around us, know which people we can or cannot trust, etc. It also brings the people gossiping closer to each other as they share information and feelings.
this is so interesting to me as someone who used to be in a youtuber fandom and isn't involved in that anymore, but like our fan culture kinda depended on gossip in periods without uploads to have anything to talk about, and there was always complexity around ethical lines. sometimes people just Want to Know and aren't necessarily doing anything sketchy, but want to talk about the things they know that everyone doesn't know...
I'm not sure what's the best formula when it comes to statements or apologies but I got to say that the best statement I've seen in recent times after a scandal was the Try Guys video. Of course they weren't the perpetrators but it could have gone really bad really quickly but people loved their video and immediately put any speculation to rest
I feel like increasingly we are seeing more interest in gossip surrounding Tiktok and TH-cam stars. Especially with stuff like the recent Try Guys scandal and the Womblands thing on Tiktok going super viral. I think this is a result of people connecting with social media stars on a more personal level than traditional celebs. Also they have a lot more access to these individuals while a celebrity may not be personally running their social media.
I love this topic and how you presented it, but I must say, you as an interviewer seems like the most pleasing experience ever. You do not phone in a certain attitude, you have genuine conversations with guests, and it is really nice to see someone be interviewed without being made uncomfortable by the interviewer ☺️ you are a treasure!
Also, one thing I think about is how celebrity culture and how we engage with it has seeped into how we egnage with the lives of everyday people like victims of crimes, one time viral sensations (think couch guy), even influencers ( including those who are not really "influencing" just positng online) to even people we see on dating apps....I feel like the average person's expectation of privacy is treated more and more like what we expect from celbreties, even if they don't willing chose to put themselves out there.

as much as i love this video i did get the feeling your guest was really ignorant on the antiblackness on some of the female celebrities who have been “women’d.” Chrissy Teigen and Sydney Sweeney have made comments and done behavior that come off as red flags to black people, and it’s interesting to see what kind of scandals are brushed off as an overreaction because they affected a marginalized community online rather than their white audience

Exactly. And the comment about the n-word. I don't think non-black people have the right to forgive and forget about someone saying the n-word cause it's not even a racial slur for them nor has the history of that word and where it comes from and the racism and anti-blackness it represents ever affected them the same way it does black people if at all, so how can they say "oh, that apology is enough. No harm done. All is forgiven." I feel like it's black people- each their own- to accept that apology or not. Another thing about how a lot of non-black people want to say, "oh, so and so was 19 when they said all these anti-black, racist things. Forgive them. You can't cancel them for that!" and I feel like non-black people have no place to tell a black person this and also saying the n-word is not a right of passage. But they want to treat it like it is when these people should have known better. Any teenager should know better. A 10-year-old should know better that it's a racial slur and shouldn't be used. So somethings there's really no excuse, cause they definitely should know better even from a young age about certain things.

I consume gossip BS because I like to know which celebrities are actually terrible people (ie abusers, longtime proven bigoted people not someone who had a few bad takes) But also I like reminders that the general worldwide aspiration to be rich and famous is built on terrible institutions and terrible people so I can try and continue to remove myself from this ideal. The Kardashians are so super famous but have done so many shitty things over the years - they continue to encourage the class gap. I like to be reminded of this. I think a lot of people are attracted to gossip for the same reason.
I remember a British TV presenter was getting a divorce and his ex put a picture on twitter her neighbour had sent, there was a tabloid photographer with a massive ladder outside her house so he could take pictures over her hedge. It’s bananas.

Many human behaviours, especially those crowd behaviours such as our reactions online to something that is happening, seem to confirm that we are just low-grade dopamine-addicted messy globs. We tend to follow the opinions of the mass because some of us are probably too shy to state "unpopular" opinions against the flow, and some of us would rather try to fit in rather than to come up for their own points.

first of all, i want to say that i love the special guest bc you did a fantastic job interviewing and getting multiple opinions always makes a discussion more engaging. secondly, i think parasocial relationships play a big part in people’s reactions to scandals. when you brought up the russian n-word scandal it made me think of the endless k-pop n-word, appropriation, colorism, fatphobia, etc scandals that crop up. people think they know the celebrities they idolize and think of them as friends so them doing something that doesnt fit the image the fan has (ariana donutgate for example) they react more strongly bc they feel personally wronged. also the idea of cultural differences is really important bc for people in america who have grown up exposed to concepts like racism, we understand why n-word is wrong versus people who have never met a black person and live in a mono cultural society probably dont grasp what racial discrimination truly is. thats not to say that its ok, but a lot of americans tend to approach every scandal as if all people involved have the same background and cultural idealology that they grew up with.
I like the way you worded this, and yeah I feel you. Americans can tend to forget that because of someone's socioeconomic background and where they're from, they might not approach said topics the same way.
like last year people were dragging Maneskin (an italian band) cause they did a cover of a Kanye song on a livestream, they censored the n word in it but forgot to censor another slur that they didn't even know it was a slur at the time cause it's not one that we outside of the USA usually hear about, they later apologized and explained that they didn't know it was a slur and yet people still bring that up to say they are racist
i personally don’t think never having met a black person excuses someone from accidentally saying something racist. people are going to tell you why what you did is wrong and you should apologize and try not to do it again. they’re obviously not some heinous bigot for accidentally coming off a certain way, but they should be taught that it’s inappropriate either wat
I get the point you're trying to make but the way you worded it sits very uncomfortably with me. Koreans do know what racial discrimination is, they were brutally colonised by the Japanese for over 30 years. I don't think it's fair of you to hold up a lack of knowledge about terms or behaviours that have racially loaded and offensive connotations in the West as evidence that other countries are socially backward in comparison. Specific forms of racist speech and action are rooted in historic violence, and the discourses that emerge later on to address and redress these harms are unique to the society that emerged from this history. You can't reasonably expect people from the opposite side of the world who have their own experiences with oppression to intuitively understand these nuances as if they are universal and self-evident truths. Instead of coming across as sensitive to cultural differences between racially diverse and monoethnic societies, you just ended up sounding really patronising and ignorant.
Unfortunately, the n-word is homonymous with some pronoun in Korean, so this simultaneously puts innocent Korean artists under the fire AND gives not-so-innocent artists a cop-out when they actually do use the n-word.

Recently studying how gossip shaped the Hollywood Classic Era in University, I was just thinking how well this theme would go with your channel and this video shows up 💘
I have a few opinions to add on the discussion at the end. 1. I don't like the idea of defending women who did something bad (but are getting too much hate) by saying "oh they probably didn't know", or "oh they were probably being lied to" etc. It feels infantilizing and also implies that women who DID know what they're doing DESERVE the misogyny. I prefer: "Yes, some women ARE bad people but that still doesn't excuse the misogynistic reaction". 2. That being said, I 100% AGREE about the "being women'd" topic. Time after time, I see people who find a female celebrity kind of annoying, but instead of saying "oh I just find her annoying", they have to find a "woke" reason to dislike her. Which oftentimes is just completely contrived and unfair.
I loved seeing Shannon! Had it not been for this video I wouldn't have known about her at all and I felt she also added a lot of value to the discussion- plus I loved being able to see you two converse about this topic because it makes it seem more 'grounded and graspable' rather than just another type/form of a video essay where having a solo dialogue almost makes the topic feel purely theoretical and like a minuscule singular input. I think with the internet and everyone being able to post any opinion at any given time, I'm worn down and tired of people just shouting in miscellaneous directions without listening or having empathy/compassion for other's voices so hearing an actual form of discussion (even though you both seemed to have similar positioning to gossip culture) is refreshing to hear and I just overalled loved !! When the authorities abolished the censure and allowed free speech in Denmark in the 18th century, they were expecting people to publish useful, informed and enlightened content (philosophical treatises and debates on how to improve society). Instead, the people published gossip and what was essentially call out posts about each other (anonymously, as they had rather naively allowed people to publish under pseudonyms). All to say that people have always gossiped and other people have always complained that this didn’t contribute anything to society 🤷🏼♀️

I don't seek gossip out. (I was raised in a heavily religious setting so I definitely went through a holier-tha-thou-I-don't-gossip phase when I was like idk 12?) But I don't live under a rock and I obviously clicked this video so I would say that I passively absorb the most pervasive gossip as it makes it's rounds and "I live in a society" so to an extent understanding what constitutes current gossip worthy news kind of helps you keep up with the shifting societal landscape.
finally someone speaks about the double standards about the difference between when men and women get cancelled. with men it almost NEVER sticks! and the reason sexism has been really prevalent lately i think is because of the amber heard and johnny depp trial. the misogyny that followed that trial set us back 20 years. add onto that the rise of andrew tate and it literally feels like society is right back to how it was in the old days and its so stressful to think about because we were honestly doing so well as we evolved.

A few years ago there was an assembly at my high school where Marc Elliot, a supposed motivational speaker, came to talk about his struggles with Tourette’s. I’ve said it before in the girl boss video and I’ll say it again: I think people in general are “obsessed” with public drama/scandal/scammers because they like to watch drama that isn’t happening to themselves. Seeing celebrities in drama also sometimes makes the public feel better about themselves since they see that the celebrities involved aren’t as perfect as the public perceives them to be.

It’s just the latest medium through which people can get famous, it’s not that they aren’t famous or celebrities imo. And it creates more of the illusion of it being your own “personal” celebrity, because it’s not always clear who in the wider society would be familiar with them
I also believe it gives ppl more power, like they can bully someone out of the app or know they got fired from their jobs, etc...and you might never get to see that "normal" person again so you dont have to take responsibility of how far you acted on their situation/gossip. Like cancel culture actually works on them unlike celebrities that don't lose a lot.

Fantastic video!!! However, I feel like Chrissy Teigan was a bad example here. She as a 26yr old adult (c. 2011) told a 17yr old to “take a dirt nap” and “go to sleep forever” which shouldn’t be brushed off because someone else made choices that were even more repulsive. Teigan blocked Stodden on Twitter after she publicly apologized to Stodden which speaks volumes about how much she actually cared about the situation in my opinion.

I feel like celebrity gossip is a type of escapism. Even though I avoid reality TV, I still follow news relating to celebrities like Taylor Swift and Florence Pugh because I want to keep tabs on them. I usually don't like speculating about celebrities, however. But the Don't Worry Darling drama sucked me in!
Same, but the opposite for me. I like to watch reality competition shows like Big Brother or Crime Scene Kitchen as an escape. I think everyone kinda has that one thing that makes them think "at least I can forget about my problems", whether it be reality TV or celebrity gossip or Bridgerton.
I think it goes hand in hand with the "at least it's not happening to me"/"these rich and famous people aren't better than me after all" mentality that draws interest in it as well.
The celebrities feuds (true or not) can last for YEARS -if not a decade or more- in the cover of magazines, and be talked nonstop like the one between Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Bieber, Selena, Hailey, Brad and Angelina... many of us know so many stuff about celebrities that we learned against our own will. Time to stop. I don´t want to know ANYTHING about the Kardashians and their scandals so they stay relevant and in people's mouths. Enough was enough a long time ago.

At my literature class we were given task to make report on Pushkin, there were plenty topics in his biography info I was sure would be covered by my classmates. And I decided not to be repetitive and research for his love romances that somehow influenced his poetry. During my report my teacher shut me after I named the topic and said that it was inappropriate and shameful to read gossips. Never had a chance to start, got C. I am so happy the internet later proved me again that little tea never hurt nobody and it's totally okay.
oh god, I'm from Russia and like we've got a whole cult of Pushkin, and literature teachers are especially into it. But! In my school we had a really chill teacher, despite that fact that she was really old and somewhat expected to be more strict and serious. She told us A LOT about his drama, romance, as well as other poets'. Also she told us about one time, when she and her class went on excursion to the place where Pushkin had been living for some time, and there they conducted a spiritual séance 😳😳😳
She was really into magical stuff and we did divinations (?) around New year and Christmas, that was lit.

Quarantine alone has affected a lot of people‘s mental health, and we all know there are several systemic issues across the world. So sometimes people need an escape and celebrity gossip is constantly pushed to us

Celebrity gossip isn’t my form of escapism for my personal or societal problems (I’m a fantasy novels and video games kinda gal) but escapism overall is something so many seek when the world (their personal one or the wider one) is a stressful or unpleasant place.
sure but everyone has a head and brain for themselves to think and choose what media they use as escapism. i personally don’t think that consuming stuff that dehumanizes people and often just are blatant lies is fair to use. it’s a very privileged way to think about this, because most only see the impact that stuff has on themselves, like isolation through a pandemic and then just do what they want to make them alone feel better. this kind of media is part of the problem because nobody respects another living thing as unconditionally as themselves and it goes on and on because nobody wants to really think critically of the things that they are doing even if it’s not really nice
there are so many more (useful) ways to get to escape from the real world... Go outside and explore the nature, read a fucking book, learn something new, do sports, make music, cook, paint, write stories, meet friends, watch a movie/tv show etc.
And out of all these beautiful things some ppl choose to engage in celebrity gossip. How...? also i feel like bc of celebrity gossip some people are forgetting to fact check their sources and to not jump into any conclusions when the information hasn't been confirmed yet
So push back & do a TED lecture. Or write a book. Volunteer!

I find It fascinating the fact that abuse, extreme violence and sexual missconduct are considered gossip. I think that we as a public sometimes confuse morbid curiosity with interest in gossip, and documentaries and TV shows like Dahmer or House of Hammer can dehumanize this narratives and make it easier for the public to normalize that point of view, talk about a crime in a light hearted way. I see myself sucked into that sometimes.

hey! amazing video as usual, small correction that stuck with me but the sydney situation actually took place in the pacific northwest! one of the elements that was also being discussed was that it is in the often white liberal paradises that we traditionally don’t think of as conservative have pockets within that political alignment. she’s not a southerner and getting roped into that stereotype and ideology of “ignorant redneck” can be harmful for those in the southeast trying to do good work within the community.

I will say re: apologies *specifically* about racial slurs or other harmful words aimed at a group (like the Renata Ri story mentioned), an apology will not undo that kind of harm. Apologizing for being a asshole to a waiter vs apologizing using a word that is targeted at/against a group (even if it wasn't intended in that way) warrant two different responses justly so. I do agree that it is up to the group, and therefore, an apology for using a racial slur should be up to said group to determine if they receive, accept, or even acknowledge it.
About the science of why people gossip, since you didn't go there in the history portion: People gossip, because it has been beneficial to our species to know what's going on around us, know which people we can or cannot trust, etc. It also brings the people gossiping closer to each other as they share information and feelings.

I feel like increasingly we are seeing more interest in gossip surrounding Tiktok and TH-cam stars. Especially with stuff like the recent Try Guys scandal and the Womblands thing on Tiktok going super viral. I think this is a result of people connecting with social media stars on a more personal level than traditional celebs. Also they have a lot more access to these individuals while a celebrity may not be personally running their social media.
I love this topic and how you presented it, but I must say, you as an interviewer seems like the most pleasing experience ever. You do not phone in a certain attitude, you have genuine conversations with guests, and it is really nice to see someone be interviewed without being made uncomfortable by the interviewer ☺️ you are a treasure!
Also, one thing I think about is how celebrity culture and how we engage with it has seeped into how we egnage with the lives of everyday people like victims of crimes, one time viral sensations (think couch guy), even influencers ( including those who are not really "influencing" just positng online) to even people we see on dating apps....I feel like the average person's expectation of privacy is treated more and more like what we expect from celbreties, even if they don't willing chose to put themselves out there.

Exactly. And the comment about the n-word. I don't think non-black people have the right to forgive and forget about someone saying the n-word cause it's not even a racial slur for them nor has the history of that word and where it comes from and the racism and anti-blackness it represents ever affected them the same way it does black people if at all, so how can they say "oh, that apology is enough. No harm done. All is forgiven." I feel like it's black people- each their own- to accept that apology or not.
Another thing about how a lot of non-black people want to say, "oh, so and so was 19 when they said all these anti-black, racist things. Forgive them. You can't cancel them for that!" and I feel like non-black people have no place to tell a black person this and also saying the n-word is not a right of passage. But they want to treat it like it is when these people should have known better. Any teenager should know better. A 10-year-old should know better that it's a racial slur and shouldn't be used. So somethings there's really no excuse, cause they definitely should know better even from a young age about certain things.

I consume gossip BS because I like to know which celebrities are actually terrible people (ie abusers, longtime proven bigoted people not someone who had a few bad takes)
But also I like reminders that the general worldwide aspiration to be rich and famous is built on terrible institutions and terrible people so I can try and continue to remove myself from this ideal. The Kardashians are so super famous but have done so many shitty things over the years - they continue to encourage the class gap. I like to be reminded of this.
I think a lot of people are attracted to gossip for the same reason.

Many human behaviours, especially those crowd behaviours such as our reactions online to something that is happening, seem to confirm that we are just low-grade dopamine-addicted messy globs. We tend to follow the opinions of the mass because some of us are probably too shy to state "unpopular" opinions against the flow, and some of us would rather try to fit in rather than to come up for their own points.

first of all, i want to say that i love the special guest bc you did a fantastic job interviewing and getting multiple opinions always makes a discussion more engaging. secondly, i think parasocial relationships play a big part in people’s reactions to scandals. when you brought up the russian n-word scandal it made me think of the endless k-pop n-word, appropriation, colorism, fatphobia, etc scandals that crop up. people think they know the celebrities they idolize and think of them as friends so them doing something that doesnt fit the image the fan has (ariana donutgate for example) they react more strongly bc they feel personally wronged. also the idea of cultural differences is really important bc for people in america who have grown up exposed to concepts like racism, we understand why n-word is wrong versus people who have never met a black person and live in a mono cultural society probably dont grasp what racial discrimination truly is. thats not to say that its ok, but a lot of americans tend to approach every scandal as if all people involved have the same background and cultural idealology that they grew up with.
I like the way you worded this, and yeah I feel you. Americans can tend to forget that because of someone's socioeconomic background and where they're from, they might not approach said topics the same way.
like last year people were dragging Maneskin (an italian band) cause they did a cover of a Kanye song on a livestream, they censored the n word in it but forgot to censor another slur that they didn't even know it was a slur at the time cause it's not one that we outside of the USA usually hear about, they later apologized and explained that they didn't know it was a slur and yet people still bring that up to say they are racist
i personally don’t think never having met a black person excuses someone from accidentally saying something racist. people are going to tell you why what you did is wrong and you should apologize and try not to do it again. they’re obviously not some heinous bigot for accidentally coming off a certain way, but they should be taught that it’s inappropriate either wat
I get the point you're trying to make but the way you worded it sits very uncomfortably with me. Koreans do know what racial discrimination is, they were brutally colonised by the Japanese for over 30 years. I don't think it's fair of you to hold up a lack of knowledge about terms or behaviours that have racially loaded and offensive connotations in the West as evidence that other countries are socially backward in comparison. Specific forms of racist speech and action are rooted in historic violence, and the discourses that emerge later on to address and redress these harms are unique to the society that emerged from this history. You can't reasonably expect people from the opposite side of the world who have their own experiences with oppression to intuitively understand these nuances as if they are universal and self-evident truths. Instead of coming across as sensitive to cultural differences between racially diverse and monoethnic societies, you just ended up sounding really patronising and ignorant.
Unfortunately, the n-word is homonymous with some pronoun in Korean, so this simultaneously puts innocent Korean artists under the fire AND gives not-so-innocent artists a cop-out when they actually do use the n-word.
You are a brilliant and thoughtful social commentator. I’m old as dirt and appreciate the insights and inclusivity of yours (and my kids) generation. Also, Shannon was a brilliant guest for this episode. You definitely hold your own with other wickedly smart people. Easier said than done but… Don’t get nervous :)

I have a few opinions to add on the discussion at the end.
1. I don't like the idea of defending women who did something bad (but are getting too much hate) by saying "oh they probably didn't know", or "oh they were probably being lied to" etc. It feels infantilizing and also implies that women who DID know what they're doing DESERVE the misogyny. I prefer: "Yes, some women ARE bad people but that still doesn't excuse the misogynistic reaction".
2. That being said, I 100% AGREE about the "being women'd" topic. Time after time, I see people who find a female celebrity kind of annoying, but instead of saying "oh I just find her annoying", they have to find a "woke" reason to dislike her. Which oftentimes is just completely contrived and unfair.

I loved seeing Shannon! Had it not been for this video I wouldn't have known about her at all and I felt she also added a lot of value to the discussion- plus I loved being able to see you two converse about this topic because it makes it seem more 'grounded and graspable' rather than just another type/form of a video essay where having a solo dialogue almost makes the topic feel purely theoretical and like a minuscule singular input. I think with the internet and everyone being able to post any opinion at any given time, I'm worn down and tired of people just shouting in miscellaneous directions without listening or having empathy/compassion for other's voices so hearing an actual form of discussion (even though you both seemed to have similar positioning to gossip culture) is refreshing to hear and I just overalled loved !! (I don't feel I used the right words to express my sentiments but yes to more guests please

When the authorities abolished the censure and allowed free speech in Denmark in the 18th century, they were expecting people to publish useful, informed and enlightened content (philosophical treatises and debates on how to improve society). Instead, the people published gossip and what was essentially call out posts about each other (anonymously, as they had rather naively allowed people to publish under pseudonyms). All to say that people have always gossiped and other people have always complained that this didn’t contribute anything to society 🤷🏼♀️

I don't seek gossip out. (I was raised in a heavily religious setting so I definitely went through a holier-tha-thou-I-don't-gossip phase when I was like idk 12?)
But I don't live under a rock and I obviously clicked this video so I would say that I passively absorb the most pervasive gossip as it makes it's rounds and "I live in a society" so to an extent understanding what constitutes current gossip worthy news kind of helps you keep up with the shifting societal landscape.
finally someone speaks about the double standards about the difference between when men and women get cancelled. with men it almost NEVER sticks! and the reason sexism has been really prevalent lately i think is because of the amber heard and johnny depp trial. the misogyny that followed that trial set us back 20 years. add onto that the rise of andrew tate and it literally feels like society is right back to how it was in the old days and its so stressful to think about because we were honestly doing so well as we evolved.
The part about NXIVM was really interesting. A few years ago there was an assembly at my high school where Marc Elliot, a supposed motivational speaker, came to talk about his struggles with Tourette’s. Some students Googled him and found out he was a recruiter for NXIVM. They told our principal and he had to apologize during the morning announcements the next day.
