    For your info, this song was originally recorded in 1913. The Home Free version is the best I've ever heard, period. And I'm 73 and a lifelong country-bluegrass fan. I've heard it done by dozens of singers and bands over the years.

    • @rcinsley
      @rcinsley 3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      It was written (probably) in 1913 by Dick Burnett (although he couldn't remember if it was original or he heard it from someone else!) The first recording (probably an outgrowth of the Bristol Sessions) wasn't until 1928 -- by Emry Arthur.

    Home Free is an American a cappella group of five vocalists, Austin Brown, Rob Lundquist, Adam Rupp, Tim Foust, and Adam Chance. Starting as a show group, they toured around 200 shows a year across the United States.
    The group competed in and won the fourth season of The Sing-Off on NBC in 2013. They sang an arrangement of Hunter Hayes' "I Want Crazy," as their final competitive song, earning the group $100,000 and a recording contract with Sony.
    Home Free released their first album under a major label, Crazy Life, on February 18, 2014. It was released digitally on January 14, 2014.
    All five of Home Free’s singers have formal musical training. Lundquist and the Rupp brothers all have bachelor's degrees in music. Adam Rupp's primary instrument is trumpet, but he also plays drums, keyboard, and bass guitar. Since joining, Foust and Brown have also become very active in writing and arranging.
    In terms of musical roles, Home Free is structured like a traditional barbershop quartet, with a lead tenor, two harmony voices, and a bass. The lead tenor, who fronts the group and sings most of the solos, is Austin Brown. Tenor harmony is sung by Rob Lundquist, baritone harmony is sung by Adam Chance, and Tim Foust sings bass, with the latter two switching roles occasionally. In addition to the four voices, percussion sounds are provided by beatboxer Adam Rupp. Although Brown is Home Free’s primary soloist, all of the other members occasionally sing solos as well.
    Home Free’s styling as a country group is relatively recent. Before Foust joined the group, Home Free was an all-purpose a cappella group, singing in a wide variety of styles, of which country was only a minor one. With the additions of Foust and Brown, the group moved more in the direction of country and found that audiences responded well to it. Home Free had auditioned three times for The Sing-Off (without Foust and Brown) and not been accepted. When auditioning for the fourth season, they made a conscious decision to style themselves as a country group. In an interview Brown said this identity is what grabbed the attention of The Sing-Off’s casting director, who said, “You guys really fit something we don’t have.”

    Adam Rupp is the “Harmonica” player… I think he’s a robot. There are a couple of videos of him playing the drums (without a drum kit) amazing. Tim Foust is the base singer, he’s at least part Dragon. There are a couple of clips in live performances where he blows the subwoofer in the speaker. I call it the reverse of the Opera Singer shattering the wine glass, He does a duet with Peter Hollens singing “Misty Mountain” the song from the Hobbit Movies well worth your time. The rest of the group are just as ridiculously talented. “How Great Thou Art” will bring tears to your eyes even if you’ve never set foot in a church. My personal favorite (aside of Man of Constant Sorrow) is “Seven Bridges Road”. Welcome to the Home Free rabbit hole.

    "Man of Constant Sorrow" (also known as "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow") is a traditional American folk song first published by Dick Burnett, a partially blind fiddler from Kentucky. The song was originally titled "Farewell Song" in a songbook by Burnett dated to around 1913. An early version was recorded by Emry Arthur in 1928, which gave the song its current titles.

      Hello Schnell and Chrissy! I don't know how you can possibly dig through all these wonderful Home Free recommendations but I want to 2nd Chrissy's suggestion for "Helplessly Hoping". It's a cover of the haunting Crosby, Stills, and Nash song from 1969 (clearly before your time, but worthy). It's a bit different for Home Free in that it's a very pure vocal performance without the beatboxing element from Adam. He joins in on the 5-part harmony. Every time I hear the song, it takes me days to get the melody out of my head.
      I did have the pleasure of attending a live concert by Home Free before all the craziness set in and it was amazing. I believe performing live, at the same quality as their studio work, is the true test of any band, and their talent and hard work clearly shows through.

    Christmas is great but more partial to Thanksgiving. HOME FREE is a rabbit hole you're going to LOVE to go down, your ears will love you for it. The lead singer was the high tenor, Austin Brown, the far left glasses & beard is Rob Lundquist, their regular tenor, the beatboxer is Adam Rupp (aka The Freak of Nature) who is 2 time World Champion beatboxer, Tim Foust is the bass and he can go as low as a G1.....and has blown out speakers before at concerts LOL, and Adam Chance, but called Chance to avoid confusion with the beatboxer. They ae amazing and have a country side but also have done a lot of other genres of music. React next to their cover Thomas Rhett's "Die a Happy Man" it's very romantic & beautiful. I think that, while yeah, their voices are fantastic and the song is extremely well done, the visual antics just add sooo muuuch enjoyment to the whole thing. I have to watch it several times to see what each of them is doing, because they're ALL just going nuts with it, and it's just so clear that they're having a real blast doing that video. Yes, Home Free is totally acapella (well, except for some occasional foot stomps and hand claps). They just premiered a cover of Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues" on Friday; in it Tim Foust (their basso profundo) goes much lower than you heard him here. If you want to hear their pure harmonies, listen to "Helplessly Hoping" and "How Great Thou Art." The guys have great senses of humor too--try "Butts Remix," "9 to 5," and "Champagne Taste on a Beer Budget." But honestly listen to anything they've done--you can't go wrong.

      Break out your best set of headphones when listening to HF, Pentatonix, and VoicePlay. The basses in these groups can hit notes that low-medium grade equipment can't reproduce! If you don't have a high quality set of 'phones, STOP and make the investment before exploring these groups further. There's so much going on in their performances that you need high quality gear to enjoy it all.

      *Tim Faust is the basso profundo, but has a five octave range. You'll hear it all, if you watch more. From south east Texas.
      *Austin Brown is the lead guy in the middle. Tenor/high tenor with great ability to emote. From small town Georgia. He used that here, but can sing with no accent purity.
      *Rob Lundquist is the guy with overalls. Tenor with pure sound and great sound making abilities including a mean whistle. From Minnesota and you hear that difference from Austin's Georgia.
      AdamChance (goes by Chance as to not confuse with beatboxer) is behind Rob. Chance sings baritone and base. Was primary bass in a prior group. Did the jaw harp twanging sound here. Doesn't get enough recognition for being glue for the harmonies, IMHO.
      All the guys have taken or shared the lead on various songs as appropriate.
      Adam Rupp, the beatboxer and last original, founding member.(Adam Chance replaced his brother, who you'll see in other earlier videos) Austin has won beatbox championships. He also has a beautiful singing voice. Watch How Great Thou Art to hear it.
      Home Free fans are called Home Fries. Dive in and listen. You're about to get deep fried. 😁
      ***Edited for correction of Adam Chance's name. Don't type comments when people are talking to you. 😬)

Second tenor Rob Lundquist (teddy bear with beard) has an astonishing range of styles. Tim Foust, extraordinary bass with a 5 octave range. Last but not least, Adam Chance (goes by Chance to save confusion on 2 Adams) baritone/bass with a voice like warm honey. Welcome to the rabbit hole!

  • @jxc107
    @jxc107 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I found it really funny during Tim's (the bass) verse, you asked, "What note is that?", because at the end of his line when everyone else comes back in, he drops down another octave to sing that part. It often gets missed but if you go back and listen to it, you will never be able to un-hear it again.

    Schnell, it appears introductions are in order. In the 5 man group frame, front left to right are Rob Lundquist (tenor), Austin Brown (high tenor), and Tim Foust (mostly bass, also baritone and tenor; 5+ octave range). New subscriber. I loved your reaction! Keep the Home Free songs coming, their catalogue is very deep (they’ve been around for 20 years), they’re most well-known since winning the Sing Off season 4 with four of the members you see here and Chris Rupp (Adam’s brother) who were original members. When Chris left to pursue a solo path he hand-picked (Adam) Chance to replace himself. You can see Chance in their House Party video as a guest in the white bathrobe (also featured in a couple other videos, most notably Can’t Stop the Feeling, which is a must). As mentioned during this quarantine season they’ve been putting out a new song every 2 weeks (sung in their own homes/neighbourhoods in 3 different States)!!! So many great songs just this year alone. From serious to hilarious and everything in-between. You cannot go wrong with Home Free covers, which they make their own, I’d strongly suggest: Country Roads, End of the Road, Blue Ain’t Your Color and their newest, Folsom Prison Blues). Their originals are also fantastic: Champagne Taste on a Beer Budget w. a cameo from Avi Kaplan(!), Dive Bar Saints, Love Me Like That and Catch Me If You Can. There are so, so many more to explore.

      It's probably worth noting that Chris Rupp has a new (well, relatively new) group, 7th Ave, with him and his (and Adam the beatboxer's) sister Kristin and a couple of other folks. They're definitely worth giving a listen to!

    If you like them.. you should check "Mayday" by Home free and see Tim Foust going tenor and Chance doing the bass line. Tim Foust is one of the best bass with Avi Kaplan.

    You need to spend the next week listening to all of their songs. I think their harmonies are hands down the best of all Acapella groups. I even prefer them to Pentatonix, since I believe not just their harmonies, but their ability to sound like instruments puts them just above Pentatonix. They do tend to do more Country/Gospel songs but have a few pop medleys as well.

      I think both groups are tops at what they do. Pentatonix' vocal precision and dexterity in Bohemian Rhapsody and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies are examples of the very best.

      @@sandrastorer5628 anything sounds good when done in a studio. Pent does that alot more than home free.

    Had to start laughing at your reactions! Welcome to the world we Home Fries gladly occupy ;)
    Adam Rupp, the beatboxer, is called a 'Freak of Nature' for a reason -- the sheer number of instruments he can mimic
