I paint cabinets and got all my paint from SW for years, mainly because they were closer to me and just seemed like the obvious choice and it's hard to change when you've stuck with something. I'd never used Benjamin Moore products before. I'm a DIY guy and re-did My bedroom which hadn't had any paint on the walls or ceilings since 2008. The walls and ceiling were like a dove gray color. I chose Waterborne Ceiling White which went on well(2 coats) and dried beautifully. For the walls, I chose Chantilly Lace(Ben line) which after two coats looks amazing!! I would highly recommend both paints as I had no complaints about either type.

We recently used SW Cashmere (customer wanted SW eggshell) on a few jobs & we were very impressed by how easy it went on, its hide ability, touch up and lack of splashing off roller (almost none). Its one of our new go-to's. Contractor pricing is on it is just a little about SuperPaint and way better in our opinion.
Thanks Michael! We like Cashmere as well. It's one of the better wall paints that we've used over the years. It's been hard to come by in my area along with Duration and Emerald. I'm glad you're able to find and use some!
I agree the Cashmere line is great to work with. Cashmere Flat is awesome! Levels out beautifully on walls with a 1/2” nap and while not advertised as such, it also cleans and resists burnishing about as well as Duration or Emerald Flat. I wont’t hesitate to recommend it to customers with kids and pets as I’ve seen it hold up for years in such situations. Don’t like the Cashmere Low Lustre though. I’ll do Cashmere EgShel or Duration Matte for full baths.
You should try cabinet coat for trim which is also owned by Benjamin Moore. Dry to the touch in about an hour with a 6 hour recoat time. Does the best if you sand between coats it has a very hard finish. Water clean up.
Couldn't have made this video at a better time. Went shoppinging yesterday for all of my many paint projects and was not able to find many of the SW paints I needed. Will be switching as well.

It’s accurate to say Benjamin Moore advertises one option for the bathroom, which is Aura Bath and Spa and only comes in matte. Seems suspicious that it’s only offered in matte. Technical support said this is because matte is what people demand. But I doubt it. I think it’s because *all but the matte* in the Aura line work fine in bathrooms, so they need a specialty product for people who want to use matte.
You are correct in that Aura Bath and Spa is the only designated offering from Benjamin Moore for a bathroom. I'm not sure about whether or not the rest of the Aura line would work in a bathroom, because I don't think they have the moisture and mold blocking agents built into the paint. Aura is moisture blocking and includes an agent to kill mildew. The company rep said bath and spa just includes more. If you ever get a chance, ask a Benjamin Moore rep if he thinks Duration matte will hold up better in a steamy bathroom than Aura satin.
So basically you’d normally use a matte sheen for all rooms including bathrooms. Interesting as I’m considering repainting our entire new construction home, which was painted in a flat builder grade paint

A friend insisted on using bm paint in his house. I thought it was the worst paint I ever used. He paid 90 a gallon, and it dries way to fast. He had 5 coats on 1 wall and you could still see roller lines and pull marks. I'll never use bm again.
Hi Michael. It depends on what paint from Benny Moore. Mainly we use SW for interior and BM for exterior. We switched when SW ran out of paint a while ago. BM does have over priced crappy paint, but they have some good stuff too. We like the Regal select eggshell for walls. Hope you find stuff you like my friend.

There really aren't many options for interior oil-based paints. There are a few trim paints that are oil-based, like Impervo, but that's about it. I would not suggest using oil-based paints for any interior painting unless you have a specific reason to do so. Most of the time if folks want added durability, or a smoother finish on trim they use a hybrid product like Advance from Benjamin Moore, or Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel from Sherwin Williams. I am a big fan of SW Cashmere Flat. It leaves a beautiful finish and while not advertised as such, has good cleaning and anti-burnish ability despite being a Flat sheen. If my memory serves me right, SW used to advertise Cashmere Flat as being washable however this is not the case now. My theory on this is due to SW wanting to steer customers to the their higher end (and higher priced) Duration and Emerald lines. I just can’t justify paying double for Duration or Emerald when Cashmere Flat looks amazing and cleans great.
I am switching to BM on my current job. I'm going with the regal select and the store recommended the same sheens that you are. My belief is that the higher the sheen the higher the UV resistant and the longer the life of the paint. The guy at store said no way is that true. What is your experience? Thanks
So, this is an older video. I'm not a huge fan of the regal select interior line now that they've reformulated. A lot of folks are having issues with it. I am still a big fan of Moorglo and Moorguard for exterior, but I don't think that's what you're talking about. The UV resistant thing, doesn't really matter for interior. Generally the life of the paint (at least for interior) is much more determined by how much it gets touched, scuffed, scratched and all of that.
I've been able to get stuff from SW through only one of the stores in our town, it's the store that has the sales reps based out of. The "spray source" commercial store. Not the industrial commercial store. If that helps

So just a heads up, this is an older video. We only use a few Benjamin Moore products because they changed a few formulations. Color matching is largely dependent on what store you go to. Matte finish in bathrooms is fine as long as you’re using a paint that has moisture and mildew resistance built in. Emerald from Sherwin Williams is what we currently use. Hi RT L. Scuff X is great in bathrooms. Durable and made to take a beating. Easier to use than the Advance. The Advance Satin is great at going over oil based paints, shows less brush marks, but has a longer learning curve than Scuff X. It can drip and takes much longer to dry. Both are great products and comes down to your preference. If you go with Advance we like the Satin much better than the semi gloss as it drips less, still has a good shine, and dries a bit faster. I was considering SW super paint for exterior. Is gloss equivalent to BM soft gloss? I was wanting to do SW color for base and trim but BM color for shutters and doors. Should I stay within the SW line and just color match the BM for the shutter color?
If it's already been painted then you can use Moorglo Soft-gloss. If it hasn't been painted then you should use a DTM (Direct To Metal) product. If you ask at a Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams store, then they'll know what you're talking about. Good luck with your door!
Hi Zee. For Benny Moore the Aura Bath & Spa Paint. It only comes in matte finish and is expensive. We like Sherwin Williams Duration matte or Sherwin Williams Emerald matte the best for bath ceilings. They may be low on stock currently tho.
General question for all y'all pros -What's the industry standard finish for exterior wood siding? Second thing; I'm going over the painting contract before signing and seeing the quoted price is for SW Duracraft. No one's even mentioned it in my research. Sounds like it's "contractor's grade" or lowest on the quality spectrum. Much appreciate some education.

I can't say its good or bad, since we've never used it. For the paint contract you can request a different paint and ask them to update the price. The Moore guard from Benny Moore in the video is amazing for wood siding and the Moore Glo in soft gloss is equally amazing for the exterior trim. Good luck!

When you said that MoorGlo Soft Gloss is like Satin, was that before or after the formula change last year that made it more glossy? I’m trying to figure out which product to put on the new Hardee Board porch ceilings. Our porches have open gables, so I’m thinking that the soffits would need the same paint sheen as the porches. I had planned to use Soft Gloss on the soffits/trim.
I would recommend the Soft Gloss. We use it for all exterior trim and didn't notice much difference in performance or look over the last few years. Good luck!

Most of the exterior stuff we do is trim work, doors and shutters. We hand brush that stuff. We use to spray exteriors but now we farm that work out to some of our buddies that specialize in that type of work. We don’t spray very much anymore.
We've had a lot of success with the MorGlo and the Moorguard. I haven't run into a scenario where I felt like I needed a different product. Overall I haven't been impressed with the Aura line of products, but that's just me.

Hi Sharon. We typically don't water down paint. For your brick I'm assuming its unpainted brick at the moment. When we paint fireplaces we typically use a mason primer and then a regular paint or mason paint on top. A Benny Moore manager could guide you to the right products. Also helpful if you take a picture of the fireplace on your phone and show it to the guys at the store. Good luck!
Very few paints have any huge problems in bathrooms , it's not THAT big of a deal ..... and I would place Advance very low on my list of trim paints .... don't like using it , don't like the slow dry time , don't think it's all that durable as people think it is ..... Advance is very low on my list
@@SuperVassarBrothers a guy on youtube did a pretty good "test" , "Advance vs Emerald" and it's worth watching ..... and not trying to bash you , I know Advance was the "bee's knees" and started the whole "Urethane modified" thing , but Emerald is so much better in my opinion .... I have not tried Command though , and I THINK it's pretty good stuff from what I hear ..... Do a thing on Command , I'd love to hear your results .... Thanks for the input for the video buddy! We just used the Super Hide flat on a few ceilings on our current job, and I liked it quite a bit more than the Ultra Flat. So good call on that one :). As far as I know the Benjamin Moore equivalent to Loxon is their Ultra Spec Masonry line of products. They have both waterproof coatings and high-build fillers, but I haven't used either of those products. The specs are very similar to LoxonXP. Let me know if you use them in the future. That might make for a good comparison video. 🤙
Surfactant leaching is the biggest problem I've had in moist bathrooms. Aura is extremely susceptible to surfactant leaching. That's why BM was forced to create Aura Spa & Bath with a different resin. My go to for bathrooms is BM Scuff-X matte or eggshell. I don't like the application or appearance of Aura Spa & Bath!
I hear that man. I don't like the Aura Bath & Spa's finish either. We only use it when the clients insist on it. I'll have to give the Scuff-X a try. I've only ever used the semi-gloss version. Thanks for the comment Mike!
The Aura Bath & Spa is an awesome finish. I recommend it all the time. I have it in both my bathrooms which are extremely challenging. There is no surfactant leaching w/ this product and as a matte finish it defies logic as to how it performs. @@SuperVassarBrothers
I own a medium size residential painting business, and I know exactly what you're talking about. I once had this very conversation with a designer who admitted they do so because they understand BM is viewed as a bit more high end, and they can charge their customers more when they (the designers) recommend high end stuff because it gives the perception that they are better at what they do. The problem with that comes when we, the painters, have to work out the estimate using BM paint, many homeowners don't want to pay the extra cost as compared with SW. Another problem is that, at least in our area, BM stores are so damn tiny and they're never well stocked, so it's a real pain to get many of their products. Of course right now SW is having the same issue, but I'm talking even before this shortage.
I'm trying to figure out if Benjamin Moore colors are more tied to popular remodeling culture, like influencer marketing, than SW. There must be a reason why they do it, even if it's not a reason that is appreciated by painters.
@@LukePighetti We've had clients who their designers recommended BM colors to, and when we tell them that SW has the actual BM color formulas in their system (so the colors would be the same), they still say their designers convinced them BM paint is much better quality, which we all know, depending on the product, isn't necessarily true.
Sherwin Williams is great at marketing paint is Below average buy Ben Moore or Richard's or Farrell-Calhoun. Sherwin paint is difficult to apply and there paints don't have good durability. Duration Matt is really an eggshell therefore it doesn't touch up well.
My current favorite wall paint is Emerald Matte from Sherwin Williams. I don't know if you've experienced it, but Benjamin Moore recently changed their formulation of Regal Select and it's made working with it quite difficult. Wondering if duration matte is any easier to apply. Might just get a quart to test it out for a whole house repaint project. Also noticed Emerald tends to go on sale more often than Duration.

I use both all the time and use a low pressure sprayer or a lambswool roller and in blind tests customers pick SW Emerald like 70% of the time. Additionally, you can get Emerald on sale like all the time. Ben Moore is 2x as much and it’s never on sale. Finally, sometimes the ma and pop stores that carry BM have limited stock and one of them the guy is a jerk and knows very little about paint. I had to wait a week one time to get some exterior AURA and SW is always stocked up at least where I live. But to say they are not even close shows you are either very personally biased towards BM or you are just inexperienced. Benjamin Moore has the best colors overall but the chances of it being on sale and having the type you want available and ready are slim to none.
We're still having issues with certain products due to supply chain shenanigans and the repercussions from all of that. Thankfully we are able to get most of the products we use. They're just more expensive now 😔

So just a heads up, this is an older video. We only use a few Benjamin Moore products because they changed a few formulations. Color matching is largely dependent on what store you go to.
Matte finish in bathrooms is fine as long as you’re using a paint that has moisture and mildew resistance built in. Emerald from Sherwin Williams is what we currently use. Terrific video. Would Scuff-X be suited for trim in bathrooms? Would a DIYer have better luck with brush marks if they used Scuff-X than they likely would with Advance? Thanks!
Hi RT L. Scuff X is great in bathrooms. Durable and made to take a beating. Easier to use than the Advance. The Advance Satin is great at going over oil based paints, shows less brush marks, but has a longer learning curve than Scuff X. It can drip and takes much longer to dry. Both are great products and comes down to your preference. If you go with Advance we like the Satin much better than the semi gloss as it drips less, still has a good shine, and dries a bit faster. I was considering SW super paint for exterior. Is gloss equivalent to BM soft gloss? I was wanting to do SW color for base and trim but BM color for shutters and doors. Should I stay within the SW line and just color match the BM for the shutter color?

If it's already been painted then you can use Moorglo Soft-gloss. If it hasn't been painted then you should use a DTM (Direct To Metal) product. If you ask at a Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams store, then they'll know what you're talking about. Good luck with your door!

Hi Zee. For Benny Moore the Aura Bath & Spa Paint. It only comes in matte finish and is expensive. We like Sherwin Williams Duration matte or Sherwin Williams Emerald matte the best for bath ceilings. They may be low on stock currently tho.
General question for all y'all pros -What's the industry standard finish for exterior wood siding? Second thing; I'm going over the painting contract before signing and seeing the quoted price is for SW Duracraft. No one's even mentioned it in my research. Sounds like it's "contractor's grade" or lowest on the quality spectrum. Much appreciate some education.

We've never used Duracraft and by my online research it does look like a lower grade of exterior paint. I can't say its good or bad, since we've never used it. For the paint contract you can request a different paint and ask them to update the price. The Moore guard from Benny Moore in the video is amazing for wood siding and the Moore Glo in soft gloss is equally amazing for the exterior trim.

Scuff X would be better in your situation. It dries harder and is more scuff resistant. Good luck!

We haven't used a masonry stain in a while from BM. I would have to ask the manager at our local BM store to see whats the latest and greatest product. Sorry for the non answer.
You reccomend bm select or sw duration for interior walls ? If both Avaiable. What I care most about is finish roll and brush marks. Picture frame. And washabikity.
I'd recommend watching this video on my review of Emerald Matte. It's quite excellent and my current favorite wall paint. Benjamin Moore recently changed their formulas and has made Regal Select difficult to work with.

When you said that MoorGlo Soft Gloss is like Satin, was that before or after the formula change last year that made it more glossy? I’m trying to figure out which product to put on the new Hardee Board porch ceilings. Our porches have open gables, so I’m thinking that the soffits would need the same paint sheen as the porches. I had planned to use Soft Gloss on the soffits/trim.
I would recommend the Soft Gloss. We use it for all exterior trim and didn't notice much difference in performance or look over the last few years. Good luck!

Do you spray or roll exterior?
Most of the exterior stuff we do is trim work, doors and shutters. We hand brush that stuff. We use to spray exteriors but now we farm that work out to some of our buddies that specialize in that type of work. We don’t spray very much anymore.
Why Regal over Aura for exterior? Is it just cost or is there some other benefit?
We've had a lot of success with the MorGlo and the Moorguard. I haven't run into a scenario where I felt like I needed a different product. Overall I haven't been impressed with the Aura line of products, but that's just me.

Hi Sharon. We typically don't water down paint. For your brick I'm assuming its unpainted brick at the moment. When we paint fireplaces we typically use a mason primer and then a regular paint or mason paint on top. A Benny Moore manager could guide you to the right products. Also helpful if you take a picture of the fireplace on your phone and show it to the guys at the store. Good luck!
Very few paints have any huge problems in bathrooms , it's not THAT big of a deal ..... and I would place Advance very low on my list of trim paints .... don't like using it , don't like the slow dry time , don't think it's all that durable as people think it is ..... Advance is very low on my list

Thanks for the input for the video buddy! We just used the Super Hide flat on a few ceilings on our current job, and I liked it quite a bit more than the Ultra Flat. So good call on that one :). As far as I know the Benjamin Moore equivalent to Loxon is their Ultra Spec Masonry line of products. They have both waterproof coatings and high-build fillers, but I haven't used either of those products. The specs are very similar to LoxonXP. Let me know if you use them in the future. That might make for a good comparison video. 🤙
Surfactant leaching is the biggest problem I've had in moist bathrooms. Aura is extremely susceptible to surfactant leaching. That's why BM was forced to create Aura Spa & Bath with a different resin. My go to for bathrooms is BM Scuff-X matte or eggshell. I don't like the application or appearance of Aura Spa & Bath!
I hear that man. I don't like the Aura Bath & Spa's finish either. We only use it when the clients insist on it. I'll have to give the Scuff-X a try. I've only ever used the semi-gloss version. Thanks for the comment Mike!
The Aura Bath & Spa is an awesome finish. I recommend it all the time. I have it in both my bathrooms which are extremely challenging. There is no surfactant leaching w/ this product and as a matte finish it defies logic as to how it performs. @@SuperVassarBrothers

I own a medium size residential painting business, and I know exactly what you're talking about. I once had this very conversation with a designer who admitted they do so because they understand BM is viewed as a bit more high end, and they can charge their customers more when they (the designers) recommend high end stuff because it gives the perception that they are better at what they do. The problem with that comes when we, the painters, have to work out the estimate using BM paint, many homeowners don't want to pay the extra cost as compared with SW. Another problem is that, at least in our area, BM stores are so damn tiny and they're never well stocked, so it's a real pain to get many of their products. Of course right now SW is having the same issue, but I'm talking even before this shortage.
I'm trying to figure out if Benjamin Moore colors are more tied to popular remodeling culture, like influencer marketing, than SW. There must be a reason why they do it, even if it's not a reason that is appreciated by painters.
@@LukePighetti We've had clients who their designers recommended BM colors to, and when we tell them that SW has the actual BM color formulas in their system (so the colors would be the same), they still say their designers convinced them BM paint is much better quality, which we all know, depending on the product, isn't necessarily true.

Sherwin Williams is great at marketing paint is Below average buy Ben Moore or Richard's or Farrell-Calhoun. Sherwin paint is difficult to apply and there paints don't have good durability. Duration Matt is really an eggshell therefore it doesn't touch up well.
My current favorite wall paint is Emerald Matte from Sherwin Williams. I don't know if you've experienced it, but Benjamin Moore recently changed their formulation of Regal Select and it's made working with it quite difficult. I'll be making a video on that shortly.

@@SuperVassarBrotherswould you still choose emerald matte over duration matte for textured walls? For our accent wall, emerald matte was nice but that first coat was pretty thick and hard to cut in. Wondering if duration matte is any easier to apply. Might just get a quart to test it out for a whole house repaint project. Also noticed Emerald tends to go on sale more often than Duration.

Hi Paul. The Duration matte we use for walls from Sherwin Williams looks and acts like an eggshell and is washable. You are correct that most mattes scuff easily (especially Ben Moore Regal Select Matte). Thanks for the feedback.

It’s almost all from Sherwin Williams except for exterior. Benjamin Moore has some solid products as well as some crap ones. The same is true for Sherwin Williams

Mehhhhh, depends on the product. Especially with the new formulation change with the regal line, I think Sherwin Williams has better interior products currently. I still use all Benny Moore exterior products though. Big fan of Moorglo Soft-Gloss and Moorgaurd Low Lustre.

@@shaunharper709what are you talking about SW Emerald, Duration and Cashmere are phenomenal. I use both all the time and use a low pressure sprayer or a lambswool roller and in blind tests customers pick SW Emerald like 70% of the time. Additionally, you can get Emerald on sale like all the time. Ben Moore is 2x as much and it’s never on sale. Finally, sometimes the ma and pop stores that carry BM have limited stock and one of them the guy is a jerk and knows very little about paint. I had to wait a week one time to get some exterior AURA and SW is always stocked up at least where I live. But to say they are not even close shows you are either very personally biased towards BM or you are just inexperienced. Benjamin Moore has the best colors overall but the chances of it being on sale and having the type you want available and ready are slim to none.
