Introducing the all-new Toyota Yaris Cross!
It’s a small SUV version of the regular Toyota Yaris, and Mat’s on hand to find out if this crossover has what it takes to stand out from the crowd against competitors like the Peugeot 2008 and Volkswagen T-Cross!
In terms of the design, it’s no surprise that it looks a whole lot similar to the regular Yaris. Sure it’s jacked up and comes equipped with bigger body panels, but the overall look shares a whole load of similarities with the regular small car. It’s the same story on the inside, too, with the same infotainment system and digital dials display as you’d find in the normal Yaris.
When it comes to performance, there’s only one engine to choose from - a 1.5-litre 3 cylinder engine that’s also equipped with a self-charging hybrid system that can deliver 114hp & 120Nm of torque.
It starts from £22,500, but should you really consider the Yaris Cross over its key rivals? You’ll have to stick with Mat to find out!

I have had one of these for 8 months. It’s a great 2 people car. I never drive in B mode as per the owner’s manual.
Just did a 2200 km road trip in Australia including 500kms on the first day and 750 kms on the last day. Quite comfortable and good on dirt roads.
Fuel economy around 4.9 l/100kms highway. Back in town it can easily give you 3.6 l/100kms.
There’s a lot of tech in this car.

@@axel.lessio not sure how old your kids are… Suggest you all pile into one and see how it feels. Then consider how much luggage space you need. Rear legroom is a bit tight for adults with driver’s seat back. I’m 187cms.
My feeling is, with 3 kids, might be slightly too squeezy.
When we went to Esperance, we took the false floor out of the boot ( luggage compartment) to fit our stuff in and had some bags on the back seat as well. I’m not sure 3 extra people and their luggage would have been possible. Unless you get one of those capsules people put on the roof.

@@zwieseler, thanks so much for the info! We’ll definitely take a look at both options then. The RAV4 might also be a bit too big for the tiny mountain roads of northern Spain, that’ll be another factor to weigh in 😅

@@axel.lessio you’re welcome. I just had another look at this video and another issue, I think, is that the centre of the rear seat would not be very comfortable for a longer trip. We previously had a Renault Captur which was slightly roomier than the Yaris.
Alternatively, if you have Kia in Spain, the Kia Sportage might be a good fit as it’s bigger than Yaris, smaller than RAV4. My mechanic is a huge fan of Kia.

I can get this fuel mileage on a Yaris diesel 1.4 engine: in town (5.5l) highway (4.5 l) but it's sooo much more fun to drive, and it has just 90 HP. Sadly, this engine is no longer in production (last of the series).

11:20 B mode in Toyota hybrids is for increasing engine braking from the combustion engine. If you want more regen, just press the brake. On the power gauge you can tell when you’re recharging the battery or discharging, and you’ll notice putting it into B mode makes no difference to the charging, but pressing the brake pedal does.

    • @demagab
      @demagab 2 ปีที่แล้ว +34

B actually reduces fuel economy in everyday driving, because it primarily uses the engine compression force, even before using regen braking.
It should only be used down long downhills, so it doesn't put too much strain on the battery and hybrid system and also by having the engine spin, it doesn't drop its temperature and won't need an unnecessary restart afterwards

It’s used for longish descents to avoid fully charging the traction battery and having to fall into conventional disc brakes with wear and tear, and the classic “brake fade” risk. It’s a bit like using low gears on a manual gearbox. I’m used to it on one of the older Yaris hybrids.

It's a lovely car for what its intended to do - namely driving around the town and for short journeys to and from work and the shops. The seating position is excellent - you sit high up and it's very, very comfortable. Being a hybrid also gives you great fuel economy. We're averaging over 65 mph at present. Downsides? It is a little noisy when revved hard but nothing too bad. Our 18 inch wheels rumble over some potholes and the suspension is a bit hard but as Matt says it's really not too bad and a very minor issue if at all. Room in the back isn't great although fine for children. The boot is more than adequate. It's quite fun to drive too and although not a fast, sporty vehicle is responsive and grips the road well. All in all it's just what we (a retired couple) wanted and together with Toyota's reliability and solid build it should prove a durable buy. One last thing. Our model has numerous safety features that can be turned off if needs be but they can sometimes become a little irritating. That said, it's great to know that the car has high safety standards and comforting for drivers and pedestrians alike. A fair review, Matt. We agree fully. It's a lovely little urban car and one that we recommend thoroughly. Does what it says on the tin and so economical.

I own an excel. I agree about the suspension and road noise on some surfaces. Not being used to CVT I took a while to get used to the way the engine comes in and out without permission. I do like the ca , it gives on average around 63 mpg taking it easy and on a run back from Cornwall on the M5/M4 it averaged 61.1 mpg cruising around the 70 mark, fully landed with holiday gear , two border Collies and my wife.
The tester did not mention that the car has three driving modes apart from the all electric button, One is dead eco and the car behaves very slow on picking up, the second is the default which is normal. the third is a sort of sport mode which throws eco out of the widow.
As I said before, I like the car and its growing on me as I get used to it. This is not a car for boy racers, its for people who spend most of their time on short runs, but sometimes need to drive a long way without getting a head or back ache. Above all it carries a ten year warranty called Relax, this though does requires dealer servicing to qualify. To be honest, with the technology in this car I believe that dealer servicing is essential ,as its very tech and computer controlled.
As pointed out elsewhere, engaging B when driving down hills brings in the engine for braking, it does not actuate the injectors or the spark plugs until you press the accelerator pedal. It also does not increase regenerative braking, just saves your brake pads on steep hills.

11:19 This is FALSE. The B-mode increases engine braking done by the internal combustion engine. Essentially, it makes the hybrid system emulate a normal transmission in a low gear. It's supposed to be used in situations where there's a possibility of overheating the brakes, like when descending down a mountain. B-mode doesn't increase battery regeneration, in fact it reduces it to prevent overcharging when going downhill for a long time, so it's pointless to keep it enabled while driving around town.

'B' mode is for engine braking, NOT regen braking! It's atually worse for regen at it means more breaking is done via the engine and not the electric motors.

I am just getting mine in next few days once licensing is done. Was lucky to get one from toyota approved used. I was told it will take 8 months for new one to be delivered. But a brand new 2022 4x4 yariss cross adventure with just 10 miles on it poped and I pounced. It is great car for the money and in the overcrowded towns is pretty useful drive. I still don't know how I got that lucky but I don't regret any euro I will spend on it.

I don't blame you and other TH-cam reviewers, for misunderstanding what the 'B mode' on the transmission truly does and when - and when NOT - to use it. Because Toyota dealers can be pretty clueless themselves when you ask them about it. I bought the new Yaris Hybrid last year. I've watched car reviewers testdrive the hybrid in the city with the B mode setting chosed, which means the car constantly loses speed when you aren't pressing the accelerator - and it gives you a worse fuel economy as well. They thought B stood for improved regenerative breaking as well.

Purchased a Yaris Cross Design with the SUV pack couldn’t be happier. Yes, the higher specs will have things that you need, but the car is definitely a lovely car. Downsides are:
The window buttons needs lights and there is a lack of lights at the rear. It also does not have front seat rear pockets.
The safety features are amazing, loving how easy it is to drive. Looks stunning and feels very good.

Hi Mat, always fun and informative to watch your content.. question though..could you please also do a review with a ''light'' offroad test with a 2022 Aygo X. i'm looking to buy one and give it the ''lifted'' treatment through a German company who offers a spacer kit for the suspension. Now as you might be aware of the lifted Subaru's and Mercedes 4x4 vans and even the prius that get lifted in the USA and lightbars get added..it might just be cool (i'd love) to see you show us what a small car could do from the factory or even with some quality TUV parts added in the form of a slight lift, maybe even with some meaty tyres?
    Keep bringing us great content,
    Cheers.. Rubem from the Netherlands

Good afternoon Mat. A great review as always. I have a question to ask you. Do you think a Yaris Cross AWD is better than an FWD to compromise on space, price and fuel consumption? Or an AWD is a minor thing and an FWD should be the first choice?

    • @coreldan
      @coreldan ปีที่แล้ว

I suppose it would come down to if you feel you need the AWD, as in have to drive in areas where a FWD will struggle. The AWD might have better suspension in the back, but you trade away trunk space, fuel consumption and several reviewers have said that somehow the FWD version actually drove better in regular conditions.

While the combinded 114hp are correct,

North American subcompacts (and compacts) never get all the options that are offered overseas, like power folding side view mirrors, sunroofs, heated and cooled seats, sports trims, etc. We always get the watered down versions. A tad bit more space at the back, but no cupholder, no arm rest there. I'm 6 feet and the Toyota is very comfy at the back too. The Toyota feels more expensive inside and more comfortable. just one thing to keep in mind the car is very narrow so check the back seat
The car it self i narrower at the back which you can't see from the ground
The car should have been 5 percent more wider and 3 or 4 inch more leg room in the back then it would have been perfect boot size is great when I ordered mine everyone was saying 397 litres now on auto trader it says 460 litres, boot is very big for the car
Other wise the car is perfect
