A lot of journalists get the CVT in Toyota’s hybrids wrong. Part of it is Toyota’s fault for having CVT in the name (they try to differentiate by calling it eCVT). But it’s just a single planetary gear set to tie the engine and motors together. No changing gears or CVT pulleys+belt. Just the motor changing speed to force the engine into the required rpm. It’s much simpler than a conventional transmission and therefore very robust and reliable.
Yeah, they need to do research on that before doing the videos, in no way Toyota hybrids use a conventional and unreliable CVT, the design Toyota uses in their hybrids is far superior in every single way.
The Toyota eCVT is the best CVT ive ever used. I am a big fan of CVTs, I have a Subaru Outback which is fantastic but its nowhere near as smooth as the Toyota with having the steel belt, although its pretty impressive all the same, I have no hesitancy and it accelerates quickly. Disappointed to see it is made in France. This will Not be as reliable as the Japanese built Toyotas. I know from experience that the Mexican built Honda HRV is poor quality
True, but the thing is people who buy these cars don’t want bigger - it’s very much a conscious decision to get a small car, whether it’s for space or confidence reasons!
Good nonsense, and all that jazz. I've got a Yaris (did I ever mention that?), and it has made me realise that Japanese cars can be very good. I'm now looking forward to the GR86. In other news, I did a road trip in my F-Type to Portmeiron and I now forgive you a little; it's a great GT car.

This car looks good and trendy from the outside and I like that a lot, but move inside and its plasticky and cheap with door handles that look and feel like they were made from recycled coffee cups only more fragile and nastier, and how you managed to squeeze yourself into the rear seats I will never know as the doors open wide enough for a toddler to get in and out of at best, not to mention the fact that its noisy and not that wonderfull on the old petroleum, get yourself a new Honda HRV and revel in its luxury compared to one of these, couple of grand more I know, but worth every penny, that's what I did!
While this is by no means the ugliest Toyota currently available (Rav 4 anyone?) it has to be said that their design department could really do with some new blood. After buying several Toyotas over the years and being delighted with their reliability, I eventually gave up after taking delivery of a Yaris a few years back - a visual and ergonomic nightmare. If a smaller company like Mazda can consistently come up with gorgeous designs, why can’t Toyota?
Looks a decent modern car although I would avoid the pretentious front wheel drive version. Off road looks but no capability, I cannot abide by this trend.
I thought this was going to be my next car, major disapointment, even the top of the range is rubbish imagine a mid range model, really really poor, its basically for older people.
How does jacking up a hatchback help anything? (Don't say getting in and out cuz that's proven to simply be bullshit) If it had low range yes but this is just a shopping trolley. Call you nasty names Tim?... Hmmm.. I shall call you Bradley

The Yaris is one of the most overrated cars in its segment. And it is actually pretty mediocre, aside from the rumor that supposedly they are reliable. The cross version is no different. I don't see why someone wouldn't get a Ford Puma over this. Or Renault Captur, Peugeut 2008, so many B-Suvs are just better than this. Toyota is such a dissappointing company these days. They are just riding their reputation and milk their fanboys, they are literally the Nintendo of cars.
all the models you refer to in greece cost more.....considerably more than the Yaris cross if comparing apples to apples (hybrid and automatic gear...etc) making the Yaris value for money compared to all -B-suvs offered in the greek market....
Well we've got a 2014 normal Yaris Hybrid and it is sensational. Not a single fault. 70mpg and what other small automatic can do 58mpg on a 3 mile run in winter from a cold start !!! None! By the way many people have these because it is automatic - Puma don't make an automatic !! I have a new Renault Captur Auto - nice car but doesn't drive as well as Yaris. I'm surprised he didn't mention the hybrid version of the Captur - it is this cars most direct competitor.

@@feldons5621 155bhp is plenty for a small car. The Yaris is what 113bhp? Too little for seasoned drivers but great for a first car.
@@flaw3dgenius222 Have you driven a Yaris Cross? The Puma 1.0 is 123 BHP: The 1.5 litre Yaris Hybrid is 114 bhp but its smooth and quick.
@@feldons5621 The Puma Hybrid is 155bhp. No ive driven the new Yaris which was decent but fun wise the Fiesta/Puma is far more playful. The Yaris cross wont be as good to drive as the Yaris like the Puma just aint quite as fun as the Fiesta
I was actually surprised how close the Puma feels to the Fiesta.
Very good review, thank you. But I hope you are not deliberately emulating the style of delivery of Jeremy Clarkson.😞
Nope, this is just me
ar but need to wait next year ....march
Think I would have a Puma st 155 over this
Sorry Tim, but it looks a bit cheap on the interior. Okay more than a bit.
Disappointed to see it is made in France.
This will Not be as reliable as the Japanese built Toyotas.
I know from experience that the Mexican built Honda HRV is
poor quality

ITS BLOODY MIDNIGHT! but I don't mind (:
Think I will stick with my Puma.
Pricing is a bit painful though. For that money you can get a Hyundai Tucson NX4 which is bigger, better equipped and scores higher in every metric.
True, but the thing is people who buy these cars don’t want bigger - it’s very much a conscious decision to get a small car, whether it’s for space or confidence reasons!
@@TimRodieDrivesStuff true but the Tucson is still in the small SUV segment
@@Gilotopia In USA they call the Tucson a small SUV or mid. Quite funny I have to admit.
NZ
So is a Rolls Royce! Strange argument - one has to assume people by a small car because they don't want a big one !!
Looks ok .. but automatic gear box only ? No thank you ..
I've been yesterday to Toyota shop. Car looks great but interior quality is horrible. Door opening handle is Dacia quality or lower.
It's not about the door handles
Good nonsense, and all that jazz. I've got a Yaris (did I ever mention that?), and it has made me realise that Japanese cars can be very good. I'm now looking forward to the GR86. In other news, I did a road trip in my F-Type to Portmeiron and I now forgive you a little; it's a great GT car.
LOL. You've only just realised that Japanese cars "can be very good". They've been making great cars for decades and I've owned many of them.
@@jdmguy44 Yes, I've only just realised. I've been driving German cars, which are also very good. I bought my first Japanese car recently, a GR Yaris, and like most people, think it's very good. I suspect you've owned many cool JDM cars, probably.
750kg braked trailer rating is marginal for a 2 week holiday at a campsite where there are children...I need a metric tonne worth of alcohol.
Because Toyota fanboys are gonna buy whatever overpriced model they push out, so why bother?
Shame that we will never see this vehicle in the USA. All we get is the awful C-HR & now the clunky, ugly, boring Corolla Cross.
Nice
Looks a decent modern car although I would avoid the pretentious front wheel drive version. Off road looks but no capability, I cannot abide by this trend.
Definitely rip puma
oh yes , trouble is most Ford traditionalists don't look any further.
I thought this was going to be my next car, major disapointment, even the top of the range is rubbish imagine a mid range model, really really poor, its basically for older people.
How does jacking up a hatchback help anything? (Don't say getting in and out cuz that's proven to simply be bullshit)
If it had low range yes but this is just a shopping trolley.
Call you nasty names Tim?... Hmmm.. I shall call you Bradley
What a shame that it isn't a PHVE or a BEV !!!!!!!!!!!!
Boot is cheap. Wooden boards that arebreally awkward to.move down, especially with the rubber mat.
Nice styling- no car should ever be gold in my opinion!
Trouble is, it's HIDEOUS. I mean, look at that grill. Yuck!
There isn’t any “trouble”….that’s merely your OPINION….whilst many other people actually like it! 🙄
@@jmw0368 Of course, you're right. It's just my opinion. It's all subjective, after all.
Yeah , it's a punchy bull nose , without looking like a Puma frog !@@jmw0368
Nice review but what has dictators got to do in a car review?. I don't like the guy but it's also not nice to insult any leader whether you like them or not.
U ok hun
So, no dissing Hitler either I guess?
he did 75 in a 70 someone report him.
In USA this would be a shopping trolley on steroids
If I want to be charitable , they have golf carts on steroids, better then this at the Major Golf courses
Concerned by the fruity language it spoils the whole presentation
It's not an SUV stop calling that hideous lookin thing, it's just a yaris with big wheels that's all.
OK dad
Old technology.
Puma is utter crap.
