I bought the Yaris cross excel in march . I absolutely love it . Great economy . £40 to fill the tank . 400 miles plus on a good drive . And about 350 around town . Acceleration is very sporty .
Of all the automobile reviews YT channels yours is one of the best! As an American expat living in Southern Europe I enjoyed your visit to Huntington Beach, California near where I was raised.
I also have the previous shape GR Sport, same as your father in law! It's probably the best thing I ever bought, I had S3 Cabrio, M240i Cabrio, GT86, IS250 Sport, TTS... I fill it up from empty for £42 and in summer got 510 miles from it!
My wife has her second one (i work for toyota) and you are 100% correct in everything you said. Biggest downside is the too noisy cabine and suspension that feels bouncy.
I have one and would agree that on the motorway it’s too loud and suspension is crashy. Other than that though it’s quite an ideal car for 90% of people.
Oh and I find on a 35 mile journey commute (20 miles motoroway 15 miles urban and dual carriageway) I get 70-75mpg fairly easily and around 84mpg if I’m trying to drive economically. Around 60%-65% of the journey is done in EV mode.
I agree about the road noise particularly on an asphalt or rough motorway surface at speed . when you come off the motorway you realise how loud the radio is playing to drown the noise! However my wife loves the car in regular day to day use. We have had no faults in 17000 miles. Fuel consumption often surprises in a good way!

I enjoyed the early jokes, thank you. I respect what Toyota has been doing with hybrids which I think have a place for another ten years, especially in markets which can not afford or support full fat EVs yet. I also like and respect the choices they have made in what to include and exclude in what you get for the price of a Yaris. Would I want a Yaris? No. But I am glad it exists. BTW I agree with all the points made about its practicality and reliability.
We have the exact same trim / colour as this but bought it last year. We chose the GR Sport because of the seats. They've improved the digital cockpit, someting I find confusing in our car but not sure I'd buy another. Our car is too noisy and the build quality, especially the sound from the rear doors is poor considering the price. We also chose the Yaris Cross because of the boot. I't's more practical than many larger cars. I think the flex load cover and split level floor is great. Can't see why anyone would pay lots more for a Lexus over this car.
You see them everywhere on the street and I must say, very good-looking car. Usually I’m not a fan of Toyota-design, but especially the rear where the lights and window seem to be in one piece looks very good. Also like the sharp edge there. Much better looking car than the normal Yaris in my opinion!
Thanks for the nice review. People here in Japan drive much slower than in Europe or North America, and it shows in Toyota detailed design, which is all done in Japan. This results in the noise at higher speeds and lowish power levels. They might need to do more to address this, since twice as many of these cars will be sold in Europe as in Japan. Lovely car though, especially for patient law-abiding drivers! LOL.
Yet another neat, inexpensive, little car we don't get in the States. I think the assumption that such vehicles wouldn't sell here is just plain wrong; exactly what we need.
You get a lot of cars that aren’t available in Europe though, so it balances out. For example, I’d love a Toyota Corolla Cross but in the UK it’s not available so I either have to settle for the Yaris Cross which is smaller than I’d like or jump up straight to the RAV4 which is a bit bigger than I’d like. It is what it is.
A lot of vehicles are not available in Australia. Same problem. The other thing the car manufacturers do us restrict options for various vehicles that are imported. Some models like the Lexus LBX is available in 5 grades in the UK but only two in Australia. Car color options are changed depending on the market. The Japanese Kei cars are not exported but people from many countries including the US have shown a keen interest.
So this is why you were in Mallorca! I took a selfie with you at the airport. Coincidentally, I got a white Toyota Yaris Cross like that at the rental company. It drives great, but for someone my size it's too tight.
Can someone explain why a car showed to the press in Mallorca has a Belgian license plate? Makes no sense to me. Anyway great review! Toyota excel at these small cars.
They always carry the license plate of where they were registered, which makes sense, because the owner does that and in this case, Toyota EU headquarters is in Belgium
are you sure people in India have 30-40k Euros to spend on a small SUV? I really doubt Toyota would sell any....this car's main target are wealthier elderly people in Europe.
@@vitkrivan9380 It's already in India as Toyota hyryder or the suzuki granda vitara. Both feature the same hybrid system (electric motors, batteries, IC engine).
In Japan I have a ‘21 hybrid e-four Z. You’re right about the door handles and closing sounds hahaha 😆. It seems underpowered, but I live in the mountains and don’t use highways much. Came standard with 18” tires, they are heavy! Interesting that roof rails only come with the adventure model…
We don't get the Yaris Cross here in South Africa, I didnt even know it exists LOL We have the corolla cross, which is a best seller here by us along with Urban Cruiser. Right after the Hilux.
Likely to be very reliable, too. The thing with boots (trunks) is that it's the shape, rather than the actual litre capacity that determines how useful they are for storing things. The YC looks a very useful space. 8:26 made me laugh out loud.
I dont know why Toyota is not more popular in the past...aa i know..the Germans made great cars 10-15 years ago..thats why!!! I am from Europe and i know!!! Heh If you want to have reliable and long term car..buy a Toyota 💪🔥
So, would you recommend a Lexus LBX or Yaris Cross (high spec)? Also I'm driving Golf 7 since 2013. I love the interior/build quality of Golf 7. Is Yatis Cross or LBX able to match such quality?
Golf 7 is a little better, Golf 8 pre-facelift not, Golf 8 facelift is good now again. LBX and Yaris Cross come very close, depends on the trim rather which you pick.
really awesome review, thanks, I don't know what to choose between the Peugeot 2008 GT 1.2L vs. Yaris Cross 1.5L? What would you choose, you probably drove both?
I have pre-facelift model and it's great city car, not so much for long trips. It's pretty loud on highway(lots of wind noise) and on the firm side on R18 wheels. But super fun car to drive, relibale, big trunk (not so much space on back seats, but duable), consumption 3-4.2L, engine is ok but it's also pretty loud at idling and when charging the battery, or hard acceleration. In city, super agile, no problem at all, but at higher speeds, the lack of power is noticable. Overall, if you dont do long trips, don't carry 4 people all the time I will pick cross again. Economy is main selling point for me, full gas tank is 28L( yes, 28L) and you can do on that 700-800km in city drive easily, that's nothing, peugeot will have 1 to 2L bigger consumption. Or maybe used 2023 corolla cross. And also in 2023 this yaris win price to equipment ratio, I have everything, matrix lights, power tail gate, all the safety toys, heating steering wheel and seats, keyless, hybrid system etc, other cars were well behing at the same price point.
@autogefuehl I have to be the person that asks! Have Toyota indicated a kill switch or dealer code update for the GSR speed limit warnings? I was to buy a RAV4 this year but couldn't live with the alerts when I was only slightly exceeding the limits during speed zone transitions etc.
I like the cockpit design but this car really does look very very cheap inside. Also, the interior noise on the Autobahn is the worst i have seen in a TH-cam video.
can this fabric in trunk also cover backwindow? dont know why would someone do it, but as u just mentioned it in the video i saw fabric is similar shape to the back window.
Hello, watching your video from Portugal. Please do review of Hyundai Kauai. Please suggest or do a comparison between Yaris Cross and Kauai. Thank You.
6:00 Thomas, door closing sound is not priority for Toyota , longevity and reliability are : such doors will break less than fancy doors with nice closing sound. 😃
17:50 Did you really feel comfortable in that position Thomas ? It looks like your legs are quite cramped behind the steering wheel like a 🐸. Couldn't you move the seat further back ?
5:26 that boot cover loses points because 1. You can not out things over it 2. It does not add to the sound proofing od the cabin. An area where Toyotas are notoriously bad
@@jpmalopes a little cloth can not absorb sounds from the boot as a platic cover coated in velvet. The boxy shape od the boot on every car is a source of low frequency sound noise due to resonance and it is important to have proper cover and to be carpeted in textile if you like proper sound insolation.
Nice rev, probably i'm mistaken, but 'fatherinlaw' didnt come up in discourses before, So, congrats on getting married in some of the recent year(s)!!!
No. Actually this eCVT is outstanding in performance. It improves the ICE efficiency substantially. That's why the consumption figures are so good. It's not that noisy. It's does not feel like a sports car for sure. It's made for small SUV buyers!
EU really nailed it with beeping sound! Hyper annoying! I suppose in 5 years our beloved EU will realize it's too annyoing and will be willing to get rid of that like with cookies confirmation on internet web sites.
Yuck, so much uglier than the normal Yaris. Super car though. No one beats Toyota in terms of reliability and practicality. Small cars with some much room inside.
I don’t understand why a car of this size is not electric. Toyota should stop designing combustion engine cars really. Besides that. Looks great from the outside but the interior is ugly as hell as always at Toyota. They have to step up their game.
Luckily toyota has people with brains who know what they are doing and so they don’t care about evs. They only have the bz4x which is basically a middle finger to evs in general.
What is the point of it being an SUV? Other than to cater to clueless and ignorant people, obviously. Does it have more space inside than the regular Yaris? No. Can it actually go offroad or has any advantages over the regular Yaris that anyone who buys it would need? No. Does it have worse handling and comfort because it's pointlessly tall and high off the ground? Yes. Is it less efficient because it's taller? Yes. Is it heavier? Yes. Does it accelerate and stop worse because it's an SUV? Yes. Is it more expensive? Yes. Manufacturers need to stop catering to people who think SUV's are better than other types of cars because their knowledge of cars is limited to "bigger = better", and start pushing actually good cars to the market. Not the cars the clueless consumers want, but the cars ENGINEERS AND CAR DESIGNERS know are better. Bring back sedans, proper hatchbacks, coupes, estates, etc. Stop this SUV nonsense....99% of people who buy SUV's don't need an SUV and would objectively be better off with a proper car, and will realize that once they get to drive regular cars instead of SUV's again. It so pisses me off, it's so frustrating beyond words, that the WHOLE CAR INDUSTRY is catering to people who have the least interest and knowledge in cars, and who actually don't care what they're driving at the end of the day anyway, because they just want something to go from A to B in. And for us enthusiasts it's almost impossible to buy a new car that's not an SUV anymore.
In 2022 almost 200 000 Yaris were sold in Europe. From those, only 60 000 were Yaris Cross. The 4WD version is actually pretty capable for some 'light' off-road. My wife has a 2023 Yaris Cross (2WD) and the 2/3cm additional ground clearance makes all difference in gravel roads. It is more spatious, at least it feels more spacious... It is also more convenient to access and leave. Good for old people... Toyota buyers! ;-)
Car makers are in business to sell as many cars as possible at the end of the day. SUVs of all sizes are in big demand. Toyota as with others are catering to market demand. Simples.
Does it have more space inside than the regular Yaris? [Yes] Can it actually go off road or have any advantages over the regular Yaris ...? [It can go more places. I would have welcomed the extra ground clearance when I drove over the lip of a sunken plant enclosure in a car park] Does it have worse handling [for its higher centre of gravity] [No, counter intuitively, it's better]

Another advantage fir the trunk cover: since its flexible, you can easily store it underneath the false floor, which for some people, is important

Some models like the Lexus LBX is available in 5 grades in the UK but only two in Australia. Car color options are changed depending on the market. The Japanese Kei cars are not exported but people from many countries including the US have shown a keen interest.
@@DJAYPAZ Indeed.
"inexpensive" is a bold statement
So this is why you were in Mallorca! I took a selfie with you at the airport. Coincidentally, I got a white Toyota Yaris Cross like that at the rental company. It drives great, but for someone my size it's too tight.
Hehe nice to meet you! Keep recommending our channel 😎
Can someone explain why a car showed to the press in Mallorca has a Belgian license plate? Makes no sense to me. Anyway great review! Toyota excel at these small cars.
Thanks 🙏
They always carry the license plate of where they were registered, which makes sense, because the owner does that and in this case, Toyota EU headquarters is in Belgium
@@autogefuehl always great if you get a clear answer! Makes total sense
This car need to be in India. It would be such a hit 👌🏽
are you sure people in India have 30-40k Euros to spend on a small SUV? I really doubt Toyota would sell any....this car's main target are wealthier elderly people in Europe.
@@vitkrivan9380 It's already in India as Toyota hyryder or the suzuki granda vitara. Both feature the same hybrid system (electric motors, batteries, IC engine).
Man, it looks so cheaply build, especially the plastics, but they want to charge up to 40k euro for this...
5:00 That wobbly cover can be twisted and put inside the side pocket in the trunk if you are transporting large items. =)
In Japan I have a ‘21 hybrid e-four Z. You’re right about the door handles and closing sounds hahaha 😆. It seems underpowered, but I live in the mountains and don’t use highways much. Came standard with 18” tires, they are heavy! Interesting that roof rails only come with the adventure model…
thanks for the feedback!
In terms of Driving quality , Honda Jazz or Yaris Cross?
Did they fix the issue with the battery ? If you leave it 3 to 4 days the car simply won't start as the 12v battery drops to 8v on the Yaris.
They must off as an opposite neighbour has a new one and replace it for days then use it and it works fine.
Isn't the engine a little noisy when accelerating?
We don't get the Yaris Cross here in South Africa, I didnt even know it exists LOL We have the corolla cross, which is a best seller here by us along with Urban Cruiser. Right after the Hilux.
Really like these !
Door opener placement is unique, but the shape itself is so 90s
Likely to be very reliable, too. The thing with boots (trunks) is that it's the shape, rather than the actual litre capacity that determines how useful they are for storing things. The YC looks a very useful space. 8:26 made me laugh out loud.
😄
I dont know why Toyota is not more popular in the past...aa i know..the Germans made great cars 10-15 years ago..thats why!!!
I am from Europe and i know!!! Heh
If you want to have reliable and long term car..buy a Toyota 💪🔥
Great review! I think in the UK we can only get the 130hp in the Premiere model which is the top of the range.
@@autogefuehl I can imagine I would agree with your analysis.
I'm looking forward to VW T-ROC with improved interior quality.
really awesome review, thanks, I don't know what to choose between the Peugeot 2008 GT 1.2L vs. Yaris Cross 1.5L? What would you choose, you probably drove both?
Ofcourse toyota because it is toyota
Peugeot has better acceleration and better quality feeling inside. Quieter ride too. Toyota is more reliable in the long run
@autogefuehl do you happen to know is there the same multimedia screen in all versions of my24?
Afaik yes
For 40 000 I would certainly go for a year old RAV4.
Up to 40k.
Is that Metallic Bi-tone - Silver colour one? You didn't mention the colour of the GR model.
See video description/pinned comment!
It's pretty underpowered and slow considering it has a GR badge
GR Trim.
@@gullible119 still has a "GR" badge.
I ordered the previous model in June 2023 and I am still waiting. I will probably cancel the order and buy a Hyundai 😂
Why you lie?
Why... Toyota is so good nowadays
Impossible😅
can this fabric in trunk also cover backwindow? dont know why would someone do it, but as u just mentioned it in the video i saw fabric is similar shape to the back window.
I'll test on mine to see if it fits and will tell you.
It does not fit! Too large for the window.
Hello, watching your video from Portugal. Please do review of Hyundai Kauai. Please suggest or do a comparison between Yaris Cross and Kauai. Thank You.
can noice insulation be fixed ?
I woulndt know how
6:00 Thomas, door closing sound is not priority for Toyota , longevity and reliability are : such doors will break less than fancy doors with nice closing sound. 😃
yeah i know that is what i was pointing out, still nicer if they sound better
Way to expensive in the UK for a cheaply made small car. The new Lexus LBX version looks better value with more quality and refinement..
I haven a 15 year old Corolla Verso with the softest door closing sound. Looks like it is not what it was anymore.
A Mercedes E-class from the 90s looks more modern in the interior than this car. Thanks for the great video as always, Thomas.
🙏🙏
This or the Duster 3 ?
Does anybody know if this car would fit two adults and a baby seat on the rear seats?
Sure
In Holland they start at 33.000 euro which is a little too much for me personally
I guess Toyota is a trillion dollar company, it knows how to build for profit and durability....
Shame the GR isn't offered with all wheel drive.
Welkom in België 😉
Front end looks like Pikachu!
Does anyone else see that?
Is European-sold model affected by recent Toyota safety scandal?
Seems like. As far as i read, it doesnt mean that the cars aint safe though
Best alternative #HondaJazzCrosstar #HondaJazzSport #HondaHRV
They look good but are overpriced, too small and there is a bit too much cheap looking, scratchy plastic...
👏
17:50 Did you really feel comfortable in that position Thomas ?
It looks like your legs are quite cramped behind the steering wheel like a 🐸.
Couldn't you move the seat further back ?
Cant be too far from steering wheel. Yes seating is good but space for knee i also mentioned in driving part is limited
8:15 I found this is fare for a lot of small cars. But to own a small car... Well, maybe is the 2nd/3d
Not sure anyone could see the front indicator if approaching at many angles
Can someone please advice if it’s better to go for the all wheel drive version? Thank you
Not that important here unless u drive snow for half a year
Thank you so much for your reply !
5:26 that boot cover loses points because
1. You can not out things over it
2. It does not add to the sound proofing od the cabin. An area where Toyotas are notoriously bad
Boot cover is totally silent.
@@jpmalopes a little cloth can not absorb sounds from the boot as a platic cover coated in velvet. The boxy shape od the boot on every car is a source of low frequency sound noise due to resonance and it is important to have proper cover and to be carpeted in textile if you like proper sound insolation.
@@BrateTebra123 My wife has one. It is so badly soundproofed that I guess a proper fabric+plastic boot cover would not make any difference...
Conclusion :
I think his father in law has the yaris cross 😂
nothing changes in the noise and for the umpteenth time, they lost to the Jazz woefully.😅
Nice rev, probably i'm mistaken, but 'fatherinlaw' didnt come up in discourses before, So, congrats on getting married in some of the recent year(s)!!!
thanks m8 !
40k euro, my old Kia Stonic a much better car cost me 15k 5 years ago, 3 months old Qashqai all options including head up display 35k euro
Nice car but the door sounds old.
for 40k id just get a tesla
“Animal free” means plastic… how is that eco-friendly?
You can recycle plastic (at least some plastics). You cannot recycle an animal. For me, that's eco-friendly enough.
@@jpmalopes why not just ask for cloth material… at the end of the day vegans are a minority and those animals are still sacrificed
What about quality of trunk cover 😅
This model has been discontinued as of today
Way too expensive... for 29K i bought the new Duster FH
best-selling and cvt? people are mad
No. Actually this eCVT is outstanding in performance. It improves the ICE efficiency substantially. That's why the consumption figures are so good. It's not that noisy. It's does not feel like a sports car for sure. It's made for small SUV buyers!
This eCVT is a totally different beast. It doesn't have the cones and belts that give all the problems with the other CVT's...
It looks white not grey
EU really nailed it with beeping sound! Hyper annoying! I suppose in 5 years our beloved EU will realize it's too annyoing and will be willing to get rid of that like with cookies confirmation on internet web sites.
When the brand new lexus lbx cost almost the same but with much better interior 😂😐😐😐 wtf
Is this your father in law car 🚗
Did you watch the video?
GR Sport, , R-Line, Sport-Line …looks like sport cars with tiny engine.
It's way too small to be your only car
Unless you the only one using it 😊
This is exactly the sort of car that makes me despair at the state of the world
Why
EV's are the sort of car that should make you despair at the state of the world.

Isn't a Yaris a hatch back? You called it an SUV.
this is the Yaris Cross, different model from normal Yaris hatch: th-cam.com/video/6jc_vUWSBuk/w-d-xo.html
GR Sport 😂
Yuck, so much uglier than the normal Yaris. Super car though. No one beats Toyota in terms of reliability and practicality. Small cars with some much room inside.
the asia version looks better
True.
I don’t understand why a car of this size is not electric. Toyota should stop designing combustion engine cars really. Besides that. Looks great from the outside but the interior is ugly as hell as always at Toyota. They have to step up their game.
They sell 200.000 of these in Europe and you want to them to stop making it! Toyota likes to make car that can outlive a normal person.
Luckily toyota has people with brains who know what they are doing and so they don’t care about evs. They only have the bz4x which is basically a middle finger to evs in general.
Toyota hybrids are selling strongly globally. Demand is strong and Toyota know what they are doing.
[Yes]
Can it actually go off road or have any advantages over the regular Yaris ...? [It can go more places. I would have welcomed the extra ground clearance when I drove over the lip of a sunken plant enclosure in a car park]
Does it have worse handling [for its higher centre of gravity] [No, counter intuitively, it's better]
So it's just you thats right, and the manufacturers and all the customers are wrong. Hmm, that makes sense.
Today I found out that Thomas is married =/
