    The Toyota Yaris Cross is a small SUV that, as the name suggests, is based on the regular Yaris supermini. It has a higher ride height, rugged styling and a more spacious interior and is only available with a hybrid powertrain. The latter means it can run on electric power for short distances and is capable of returning class-leading fuel economy of around 60mpg. In a market crammed with very talented small SUVs such as the Ford Puma, Skoda Kamiq and the Carbuyer-award-winning Renault Captur, is the promise of low running costs enough to tempt buyers? Nicola gets behind the wheel to find out.

    Well i disagree with you regarding the back seats. I am 1,86m (around 6F) and i can comfortably sit on the back and have plenty of space for my knees, feet and head. Even with the front seat adjusted for myself i still fit on the back no problem at all. And please stop saying the head- and taillights are the same as the regular Yaris, they are not...

    This is the first @carbuyer video I've watched in quite a while. I think the approach to this review is absolutely perfect for the general person; not over emphasising mediocrity, recognising that some things just aren't important, and the communication doesn't assume knowledge of vehicles. Very much like early @carbuyer reviews.
    The sub 10 minute length is perfect, too. Nobody wants to spend 20+ minutes watching someone wiggle every bit of plastic or sticking stuff in fake holes...

      @bjs7442 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My only negative is that it is appropriate to say it is based on the regular Yaris. However the constant references and comparisons through the video to the Yaris could put some people off buying one as why pay extra just for a Yaris. Perhaps Toyota should have given it a different name . It is more than that and should be reviewed on its own and compared to the Puma and Tcross or Troc and see how they compare price and spec wise.

    Nice review. I have the standard Yaris MK3 hybrid with 99hp. This new MK4 is 114hp, but since it's in an SUV body it's suited to city and short - medium distance driving. Long distance will be pretty poor with engine noise due to the low power of the car and CVT gearbox. However practicality of this better than the normal yaris as mentioned in the review.

  • @simonthomas5367
    @simonthomas5367 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I tested one of these yesterday. Really refined. Farewell crashy suspension. Really comfy and the engine is so much better than the previous gen Yaris. The engine noise was nothing like a diesel! It just sounded like a nice, pokey petrol engine and was never loud or intrusive. The dials are completely different to a normal Yaris also. One big display instead of two binacles. Much better. So good I ordered one!

    • @ramishrambarran3998
      @ramishrambarran3998 ปีที่แล้ว

      The noise from the engine is the result of using an engine having three cylinders instead of four. Three exhaust pulses every two crankshaft rotations is more intermittent than four every two crankshaft rotations. Many hybrid vehicles are opting for three cylinders.................It is cheaper to make a three-cylinder engine.

    • @ramishrambarran3998
      @ramishrambarran3998 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@simonthomas5367 What I meant, is for Toyota, it is cheaper to manufacture a three cylinder engine, rather than a four cylinder engine. Too, the engine physical size may be smaller than a four cylinder engine.....And I am not doubting that your engine may be more economical than a four cylinder engine of the same displacement.
      Just remember that the turbo is the life....and death of an engine. They usually have a shorter serviceable life than the engine itself. The renewal of a turbo will set you back (not the car manufacturer) a few thousand dollars. Yes, The trend is to put smaller turboed engines into vehicles today, to get the power of a bigger engine. But YOU pay for all of that when its time to renew the turbo.
      Add that to your savings in gasoline !

      West Indies.

    • @simonthomas5367
      @simonthomas5367 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ramishrambarran3998 Yes I completely agree there. In fact, my 3 cylinder is a bi-turbo which is what makes it particularly economical. But as you say, more parts = more to go wrong! I also run a couple of Honda's from the 1990's. One mono and one four cylinder. Both with carbs. Both indestructible! Bizarrely, modern bike displacement is now getting bigger to pollute less. Or at least to comply with Euro Norms. The world is turning upside down!

    Great review. Wouldn't worry about CVT gearbox acceleration noise, it won't break. Most of us have radio, media on in car when driving. Toyota should improve on sound proofing across their range though. Having driven or owned, Prius, ct200h, rav4, etc.. the Toyota hybrid is the best and most reliable. Sister has Mercedes hybrid, starter motor went in under 3yrs, computer stats showed car restarted itself 50 times in 6km driving. Starter motor around 1k euros. Toyota have different set-up. No one does hybrid like them.

    I own one of these with the I-AWD and it is a fine car. We live in a cold climate with ice/snow 6 months of the year and it deals with it just fine. Most impressive is all the tech, heated seats/steering wheel, Adaptive cruise, heads up, hill descent assist, snow mode etc. Get one second hand/ex demo and you won’t be upset with the approved used Toyota 10 year warranty.

      It depends very much on the battery state of charge.
      The best way to drive any Toyota hybrid, such as the Prius, is not to stamp on the throttle but to press and dig in more and more. That way it feels like a big engine under medium load. There are over 20 "modes" that a hybrid synergy drive engine/computer can operate under.
      The entire hybrid's drivetrain response will give much more of a refined shove sensation building up speed rather than the cvt-scream of a pedal to the metal approach.

    Neither this Yaris Cross nor the "standard" Yaris seem to be made for a family. When you see how limited the space is in the backseat and how much (or better: little, I would say a crack) the rear doors open, you wonder what the manufacturers' thinking here is. If I (with my 6 ft) had to sit behind myself and squeezed myself through that crack, I poke my knees into the driver's seat.
    Try installing a child seat in a Yaris/Yaris Cross 🥴, let alone "filling" that seat... 🥵
    And now compare the space, especially in the back of this Yaris Cross with a Honda Jazz or if you prefer the "SUV/Crossover" look the Jazz Crosstar. These are 13.5 or 9 cm. shorter, 7 cm. narrower and have a 4 cm. shorter wheelbase. But... a lot more space and much better accessible!
    And yes, you have about 85 liters of boot space less in the Honda's, but are you looking for a (small) family car, maybe look at this Carbuyer video th-cam.com/video/b3x3DHkbXms/w-d-xo.html (from 1 :25 or maybe better from beginning to end).You see how wide the doors open en how much space one has in the back? And those "magic seats"?
    Take both, the Yaris Cross and the Honda Crosstar for an extensive test drive. Anyone facing such a choice should!!!
    That could be a very surprising experience!😲

    Basic but ergonomic interior quality and layout. Very effective heated seats with 2 levels. Surprising steering wheel heating option that works well. Appealing exterior. 4x4 would be my preference instead of fwd. Very good front visibility, good parking camera/guide. Slightly underpowered for merging and highway performance. Rear gate struts need to be more powerful to allow for door to open on its own. Rear gate latch is badly designed and gate needs to be slammed to shut properly. Jittery ride on uneven pavement, unlike other Toyotas (Camry, Corolla). Suspension could be improved. Economical MPG but the fuel tank small size makes this car a runabout city auto , not a long range cruiser.

    Looks completely different than a Yaris even though it's based on the chassis. It's not like the Tesla Model Y is for example to the Model 3, ie raised and mostly looking the same. The engine sounds more like V6/V8 (it has 3 cylinders so half a V6) but with the transmission am sure it will sound a bit strained at times. Overall I find myself liking that - reminds me of a small Daihatsu 4x4. Shame they don't do a plug-in hybrid however, which can self-charge or take a top up from the wall, although the battery probably is too small to justify it but some folks already have a home charger now and it's difficult to find a small BEV with a good range. I think the Cross has approx 400 miles of range total.

    It’s a shame the 9 inch HD cloud navigation system intermittently connects and disconnects by itself. I just can’t trust it. Toyota are aware of the problem since 2021 but they still haven’t sorted out the problem. Mean time Toyota are still selling faulty 9 inch and display with cloud navigation fault which displays as “No Connection”. This is happening all around the U.K. and is not restricted to one area. The cloud navigation system relies on 4G telephone system via Vodaphone system connected to Toyota. If you want to use apple car play or android auto then go ahead but this is costing the customer data, the cloud navigation is free and it should work. Toyota U.K. as customers to go to Main dealers but all they do is disconnect the small 12 volt battery and reconnect, this re-boots the cloud navigation system and the could navigation works for a few days and then “no connection” fault appears again. Toyota U.K. have no answer to this problem but are still selling cars with the cloud navigation system fitted.
