You don’t have to be directly head to wind when raising the Genoa. Sail a few degrees off the wind on your preferred tack so the Genoa goes up off to the side instead of beating you to death. Fun vid.
Absolutely correct David. Your mainsail hoist was perfect Phoebe and Josh. Good to see you getting the main up first. If your jib tack fitting is a downward facing horn, try tying some bungee cord around the centre post tied to a small stainless ring. Put the jib tack on the horn and place the stainless ring over that to positively hold the tack on. Saves frustration.
😂 Every sailing couple understands, we’ve all done it and laughed about it the following day over sundowners! Love to you both, you’re doing ok. I would say get a pfd on when you’re working on the foredeck, for exactly this reason, and tether in if possible. Finding a seaman in the ocean while trying to sail the boat single-handed after your love has gone over is almost impossible.
MANY a facepalm on Innerbloom when editing these videos. Super silly to not be wearing PFD's whenever we're leaving the cockpit. I have reoccuring dreams of Josh falling overboard when working up at the mast, and for this reason we've become a lot better with our safety. Thanks for the encouragement and wisdom as always. - Phoebe
Greetings from Indiana! We’ve got our boat on the hard for the winter but your videos are a great consolation. Awesome videography and score, you guys are really talented. 👏🏻
hello! we're so happy to provide the means for you to dream about your soon to be time out there on the water. really appreciate your comment, and hope to see you out there one day! - Phoebe
That's sailing in a nutshell, lots of hard work, but those magical moments make it all worthwhile, like a roller coaster, you can't have the high's without the lows, too much of life people are focused on avoiding the lows but it means the miss out on the highs as well. 👍 The editing is getting better too, so and extra 👍 for that
Thank you Dave!!! Really enjoying the editing process more and more, especially now that we have so much fun footage to work with. This sailing journey has been 30% stupidity and scariness and 70% bloody incredible. It's been a beautiful experience navigating the new dynamic in our relationship on the boat and working as a team. Thanks again for the comment! - Phoebe
A halliard is used to raise a sail. A sheet is used to trim it, in my understanding. The angle of your preventer lines is almost useless, closer to 90 degrees is much more useful! Good luck to you both & much love ❤
No better way to learn that to look back on our footage of us sailing and go "wtf were we thinking" hahaha. Thanks Donna! We've come a long way since Horizon shores...
Hey it looks like you a strong toe rail with multiple attachment points . I agree it is good to have a main proventer when sailing dead square . If you don’t have an attachment point on the boom . Bowline around boom about mid point . Attach adjustable preventer. Also attach pole to loosed sheet before attaching to mast . Halyard ( topping lift) to keep at right height. Hope this helps best wishes
One of the things you can look into to save fridge space is pickling some or all of the fish. It will last for weeks and wont need to be kept cool...both good things on a boat 😁⛵
Heya guys, loving your videos 😊 Im not sure how far behind the vids are to your current position, but you REALLY need to be watching the forming cyclone for the coral sea over the next few days.
hello David! Thank you sooo much for getting in touch, we're overwhelmed with gratitude at how many are concerned for us new kids. Thankfully we're actually south at the moment, very safe and very eager for this cyclone swell 🏄🏻♀️
Hey New Kids! That opening sequence! Ok, let me old salt rant for a second. Ignore if you want. On race yachts we frequently hoist a headsail while sailing downwind because the sail is shadowed by the mainsail. A good helmsperson sails a little close to ‘by the Lee’ to take tension out of the headsail. Do not gybe …so two hands on the helm. (No attention on filming!!!) First have the clew of the heady over the top lifeline and eased about 50 to 70% so it doesn’t fill as you hoist. Then hoist double time. Easy peasy. (Attach the tack first dickheads!!!) Next time you pole out the headsail. Ease off the lazy windward headsail sheet. Put it in the outboard spinnaker pole beak then clip the other end in the mast. The topping lift should be raised to get the pole up above the lifelines. Once the sheet and mast ends are connected lift the pole up to the clew height. Then sail a little by the lee, dont gybe the main and quickly pull the new windward genoa sheet on before you ease the headsail off the leeward side. You need a spinnaker pole kicker too. Or if you want to put the pole on to leeward then gybe so the headsail is in the windward side do this: Run a second sheet on the leeward and loaded side. Tie it off on a cleat so the sail sets. Ease the old leeward sheet off and put it in the spinnaker pole beak then push the pole towards the clew with a little topping lift holding the pole up. Clip the other end of the pole on the mast and raise the topping lift up more. All you need to do then is pull on sheet going through the pole and take up the tension so you can ease off the second sheet that you put on. Gybe and the sail will be wing in wing. Happy to talk you though lots of sail handling if you want to reach out.
Yeah we have began to realise just that, if the boat has any significant forces acting on it and is over powered the AH just won’t cope. Have definitely considered wind vane it would just need to be mounted off center on our stern. We have lots of ‘stuff’ at our stern that may impede wind onto the vane do you think that would be an issue?
Heya sweet ones... It's your Auntie who encouraged you to cherish your firsts. So proud of you both. Mistakes happen, it's what you do after ... You both dialogued... New word ... with care and figured out a plan. Like to drop another gem... Chasing fun is good for a minute,... Making a difference lasts lifetimes... Deep fun with deep purpose. Think on it and see what wonder you can devise. Big hug from your Auntie in Hawaii.
Attaching the sheet to the pole is easier and SAFER if you jibe so you can attach the lazy sheet to the pole (which is not under tension). Then jibe back and you are set.
No excuse to be rude to your partner. Keeping emotions under control will give you better judgement and keep you alive when shit really hits the fan. Call it experience. Also you need more wraps on that mast winch- at least 3. Being a Captain means keeping your cool at all times so the crew will also.
Hey Gary, great to see you here again 😄 This is Phoebs. I totally agree with you, precise communication doesn’t mean that it can’t be without kindness. I didn’t and don’t take it personally though because he has never spoken a harsh word to me outside of these scary sails. As you said, this comes with experience, we know we’ll both improve over time with remaining calm and proactive rather than reactive! Definitely will take note of the wraps on the winch, these little adjustments will add up to being better sailors so we appreciate the advice!
Don't get me wrong, you guys are awesome! And I'm sure you have a good guy with you or you wouldn't be there. This is a youth and experience thing and you are both brave for going for it!@@Thenewkidsonthedock
heyo! we get our music from a royalty free subscription platform called Epidemic Sound. Not sure if they're available on itunes/spotify because of this though. Super stoked you're enjoying it! Music for me is one of the most important aspects of a YT video - it completely sets the vibe! It takes me a while sorting through all of the music on there to find the one thats *just right*, so I'm glad you're vibing haha - Phoebe
So on our L26 at university, the halyard for the pole is called a up-fu**er and the down one.......down fu**er. Pretty simple. But for the purists, pole up and pole down. But feel free to use the latter terminology when you need to raise your voice from the foredeck.
You're adults, young adults, so I won't begin to lecture. I would like to know if you have practiced man over board drills? Josh looked pretty close to going over. The damage didn't look to bad from the torching Pheobe. Good stuff. Shit. I'm almost up to your current posts.
absolutely right, we're getting better with remembering that without safety there's no sailing. we might trust ourselves and our ability to work with the motion of the ocean...but we should never get complacent and forget about the ever changing moods and behaviour of the ocean, as well as the things that can go wrong on a vessel. learning more every sail! thanks mate :) - Phoebe
No words for this. There is obviously no understanding of how sails and boats work to be so stupid and I'm not talking about the shouting and mistake in forgetting the foresail tack. The learning curve here for all is steep. Taking a few basic (BASIC) lessons is suggested. This is a recipe for disaster and broken fingers, wrists arms, feet, ankles etc. Good luck.
Personally I see some male red flag ego anger here, it’s nothing to do with shouting because of the wind. A cool calm level headed skipper doesn’t need to shout at a female or crew like that.
Hey mate, thank you for watching! It’s Phoebe here ☺️ In his defence, what happened was really scary for him and it wasn’t until watching this footage that I saw just how dangerous that situation was. If he wasn’t quick to react he would have 100% been pulled overboard, that’s pretty gnarly. I can see how without any context he looks like a real ass, however the ONLY time Josh has got upset at me/raised his voice at me in our 4 year relationship has been in scary moments at sea like this. At the time of this being filmed, we had only been sailing for 3 months. I think with only 3 months experience as a captain he handles things pretty damn well. We could have very well left this footage out, because we both know how bad it looks (and I don’t want anyone to think that I allow myself to be disrespected in anyway) however it wouldn’t be very truthful about our journey as a beginner sailing partnership. Mistakes are made, there’s always things to improve on. It’s important to be authentic and share the ‘realness’ of it rather than making it seem like we’re living this perfect life as a perfect couple that always keeps their cool and communicates perfectly. I appreciate you caring, it means a lot. Rest assured that I would not be with Josh if I was getting anything less than absolute respect and tenderness from him. Fear and exhaustion brings out the worst in us…it just sucks for Josh that the camera hasn’t been out when I’ve been at my worst 😂
Wow! GreatJob and of course I freaking LOVE the video.

I'm thinking your leaving the pollywog stage. Way to go! That dinner looks delicious 😋. Sail Ho!
Something’s we think the same, but then… 😂 always amazing food when phoebe is in the kitchen! Cheers
Super lucky did not get a bad burn. Keep sailing, thanks for sharing your adventures
SO lucky. I'm sure I've only got a few strikes left though 😂 Thanks for the comment!

Wind vane is your best friend, buy one.
Have fun.
