@BreakingWavesSailing now that you ask you shall receive... I would suggest your wife research and seek out a good, "regression hypnotherapist" to determine the past emotional trauma that debilitates her in the present and future events it can easily be desensitized and no longer plague her in future eventful situations.
normally the boat insurance has to pay for the rescue ... that's international law ... it depends on the worth of the boat ... but 25 tsd is more than fair ... otherwise your boat would be a total loss without them ...
So glad you are off the reef without rudder damage and major leaks! The boat is looking so much better five months later. The damage to the reef is localized and small, quite unlike the pervasive effects of bleaching or other area damage. Thanks for sharing the worst days of your life with us. That takes a lot of courage. ❤
@@BreakingWavesSailing The battery cable corrosion is electrolysis caused from a DC power source submerged in salt water ...... it shouldnt go much further than that but when you haul out have a good look at ALL metal that was under water at the time especially prop, prop shaft, rudder fittings, through hull fittings ..... etc You both certainly dodged a bullet there and found some genuine friends on the way
The video is incredible and I'm happy to hear the damage to the reef is minimal. I am absolutely blown away by the community who helped you. My faith in humanity stays forever strong!
6 hours after posting and you hit the $20K goal. Boat lovers are the best people on the planet. Congrats to both of you. And that community definitely deserves a workhorse to help those in need need.
Alie, you’re always amazing in these emergency situations where you’re the only one who knows enough of both languages to make the whole thing possible. In the last two videos, you were everywhere at once, answering & asking questions that were going to make it happen. It’s so obvious where your heart is……..🍀
It's been an emotional ride watching your channel, from "the Pacific's a bathtub " to being wrecked on the reef and "I wanna go home " the islanders were amazing. You guys did such an amazing job filming and presenting this whole experience. Some of the best story-telling filming I've watched. I felt like I was on the boat with you as part of your crew/family even as all of the chaos was happening and your home went hard on the reef. You found a great balance of sharing your own ups and downs, giving credit to the local people who saved your boat, and not forgetting to be aware of the environmental impact. You are a joy to watch. Thank you.

We have run aground a couple of times for different reasons. We found the best solution if acted on quickly was to extend your main halyard with long rope. Have one of your party take the halyard into your dingy and motor off pulling the halyard. This tips the boat to around 45 degrees drastically reducing your draft. You have to be careful that the side of your boat does not contact the reef or bank. Your keel will take a fair bit of abuse, your side will not. This was taught to us by coastal rescue up at Pittwater NSW and worked in multiple situations on our boats and others that we helped rescue. Glad you and the boat came through it.
Beautiful people on that island. God bless them. Beautiful people all around!! I hope TH-cam will continue to promote you guys!! It is amazing that with everything going on you guys are able to document it all so well. The videos are high quality!
I am so relieved that the damage to the boat was not as severe as it first appeared. You two are remarkable individuals and your love of the ocean is obvious. I too hope the reef can repair itself. Nature is an amazing thing, we are just little pieces in a much larger entity.
i consider myself a kindred spirit from BC and so happy for you. unfortunately i am not in a position to help financially but just know i am with you in spirit. be safe
Oh mylanta!!! We just stumbled across your channel & went back and watched the last three episodes! I was on the edge of my seat…laugh and cried for you! It was like a movie!🙈 We have subscribed and will follow you on the socials as well as Patreon. The fact that Alie speaks French, Ben was injured, you CONTINUED to document all of it AND you were so respectful to each other!!! Wow! Kudos to both of you! Thank you for sharing the horrific experience with all of us! Fair winds…🤙🏼
It takes a village. How amazing the community was there to help you. Just can't imagine what you went through. Watching many sailing channels and the one main constant are these amazing villages and communities that are so friendly and help you in your time on need. With so much divide and even hatred, especially back here in the states, watching the generosity of the sailing community and these villages reminds me there are amazing and kind people in the world. Many blessings and positive vibes coming your way.
What a great trilogy of videos about this experience! The hero's of all of this are you two wonderful humans. You have taken a really stressful and life altering moment and turned it into a very teachable lesson and even helped the community that were so generous in helping you out of the situation. It is impressive to have met the GoFundMe goal for the village boat, such an amazing outcome that will have a massive impact on the lives of not only that community, but all of those that they help from now on. Well done to everyone! Your boat is pretty resilient there too......
I can only imagine how stressful this situation was for everyone involved. Delighted that you guys, all the islanders and of course Kiana emerged safely. Obviously bruised but not broken. Well done on the fundraiser. ❤
Watching this journey made me live thorough my nightmare of something similar, but at the end of the day you saved your boat. The best situation that may come out of this is getting those wonderful people a proper boat. Thank you for sharing.
Great outcome guys, and excellent result for the village fundraising program too, which I see is now fully funded, and then some. Not sure who could have gotten on your case about the reef, you had no control on how that all happened, and you did the best you could when floating the boat afterwards. Lessons learned and new friendships made, opening up previously unknown opportunities to help this island. What name are they going to give to their new boat? Going to be interesting to see. Fair winds, from Florida 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Wow! This was an emotional ride. I just found your channel and as a fellow sailor I want to say; what an awesome example of humanity, skill, hard work and resilience you’ve shared. Thank you, to all that had a helping hand and show how amazing humans can be when we work together. Fair winds
So happy to see you guys afloat again! Much love from Sweden. Very impressed to see how the local community pulled together to help some strangers. A small detail for later that I'm sure you're already aware of: Crimping cables with a hammer like that (19:59) works for a temporary fix, but won't be reliable long-term.
Congratulations on handling this potential tragedy so professionally and compassionately regarding the locals, their reef, their concerns and safety etc... I can't imagine how much more difficult this would have been had Alie not had some French language skills. You definitely had some bad luck that started the whole chain of events but then a lot of good luck to recover from it. I hope all is well now and the boat is back in tip top shape.
absolutely remarkable recovery. That beautiful community all coming together to save the boat . A huge experience and wisdom gained for both you and them that can be used to help other's in the future. We are human accidents happen even with the very best of planning. What is important is what we learn in these tough situations. I believe we can all learn a llittle from your experience and concidering what an incredibly difficult situation it was, you documented it extremely well. Much love to all of the poeple of the island for all of their help.
I'm not sure which was the happier bit - Ben and Allie being happy they are floating, or Allie translating "hotwire an engine", and Bruno getting it "yeah....what's wrong with your starter?"
One thing that I haven't read much about is that, throughout that nightmare you both were/are safe! This is one amazing story that will be told for years to come and the wonderful memories of friendships formed as well as the insight into island life that most of us have no clue about has been well documented and shared. I thank you for that. Continued safe travels and kudos to all those who helped you! Truly awesome people!
So lucky you had people like Bruno and his people to help you in this terrible event. Chins up and keep the dream alive. As you say they reef will recover as it is a living eco system.
SO HAPPY YOU TWO ARE ON THE MEND ! AND YOUR SAILBOAT ! JUST AMAZING ! PTSD /post traumatic stress disorder , it is a very real thing and you may feel its results for many months to come , confidence is effected , and fear will linger but its normal . you'll find yourselves taking precautions like never before . Its actually a blessing of sorts , you'll be safer in the long run , bravery and risk taking wont be as desirable ...but that's just fine,,,
What a crazy amazing wonderful scary joyful escapade !!! The fact that you stayed cool enough to record it all and take us along for the ride is unbelievable. Can’t wait to see what’s next for you two. Watching and enjoying from Bamfield BC 👍
Just found your channel.... first video was getting washed up. You guys are great people and the community you landed on was amazing. This will be my first GoFundMe donation. And I thank you for helping me to help others.
Alie & Ben, so good to see your boat back floating again. Blessings to you and all the people helping you through the tough time. We hope everything will turn out good and you can get back on track soon. Many kudos to you and your supporters 🙏🫶
Amazing story, you two must have had a ton of karma built up to be floating after that! So happy for you, and grateful for the wonderful people on the island. Lots going on here in the states at the moment and this story has been a much needed beacon of good light! Thank you!
Just got caught up on the situation and wow, what an incredible community of warm, helpful and resourceful people. I hope they're able to get their work boat.
Gday team Breaking waves, As a person with an electrical background can I make some comments on the electrical work being carried out. Please dont take this as any type of criticism rather than something that will be required to be done at a later date BUT does need doing. I saw that the person assisting crimped the cable using a mallet. In an emergency I would support this method but at the earliest opportunity I cannot stress enough is to get the lugs crimped correctly using the proper tool. If not done correctly this can cause an high resistance joint and cause further major issues. The other thing I may have noticed (I am not sure due to the resolution) is that the thick cables you repaired did not appear to be tinned but were just bare copper. Once again all copper cables on boats should be tinned. Untinned cables build up a oxidation that can and will cause high resistance joints. If those large cables are unitnned I implore you to change them over to tinned copper cable. Its not cheap but in the long run save you a lot of grief. By the way well done on refloating your home. The only other thing I would mention is when you do the repair cut back as much of the broken glass to ensure that any core has not be saturated by water.
This was very engaging content. Glad you were able to recover your boat. Ben is right to stress the importance of getting dry-docked and fully restoring the hull. The locals are charming, I hope they get their dedicated coast guard vessel (a big cat with a strong winch or two would be ideal).
You guys handled it well. When things like this happens, your only way out is to stay calm. Remember not to trust the electronic charts, beware that in remote places chart data can be dodgy, and use common sense. Two types of sailors exist, those who has gone aground and those who will. Glad to see you made it.
It is so strange what looked like a total disaster, has turned into a blessing....your subscribers have increased tremendously. The folk on the island are able to get a boat. God works in mysterious ways. 🙏 Looking forward to where you all go next!

Hello guys, good afternoon. Truly, I am very pleased that you have rescued Kiana and to see you again at sea and happy. The teaching served them. P.S. Mis. Ally, this advice is for you, I just want you to observe it. Regardless of each situation you find yourself in, you must remain very calm and without moving quickly, just observe, tranquility gives you enough time to think. Avoid at all costs blows and wounds that could cause MAJOR EFFECTS. You have reached a very dangerous mental breakdown situation, REGULATE your Emotions. P.S. 🎵🎶📣 KIANA FLEET.... 👏👏👏
Quite amazed that you guys were prepared to film all this harrowing experience for us to witness. That takes some depth. Very pleased that the boat appears to have taken the worst of the impacts and seemingly not mortally wounded 🙏🏻. Check the stiffening frames for detachments, as far as possible also bulkhead damage and any other fresh cracking. It’s a good sign the floorboards are still lined up flat. Good luck guys you are unlucky and very lucky at the same time. A wise man said that success is the way you deal with failure, I reckon you passed the test!👏👏🤣
We are SO lucky. And yes filming has become sort of second nature to us now, but we are glad we are able to share this story. Complete structural assessment coming up!
Well done for getting out of that situation and your diplomacy in negotiating with the islanders in regard to the refloating.Biggest thanks though should go to the islanders themselves for the effort they put in.
Almost all traditional dieselengines can be emergency started with a screwdriver, closing the pos terminals on the starter. When in an emergency never mind about chargers etc. Your story ended well 😊 But it highlights how important a proper sturdy anchorchain lock is. Separate from the windlass, attached to a hull structure strongpoint
Wow...I cannot believe how you and the islanders got your boat off that reef! Truly inspiring and amazing! Not sure what type of person would make a negative comment about any of this as I am sure you never set out to slide your boat across a reef! Keep safe, keep sailing and looking forward to seeing further adventures! Cheers Mike and Ally S/V Bears Mistress II 🇨🇦
I have a CheoyLee 32 offshore ... We have simuler keels .. 2" hand laid fiberglass and 3" in the bow. Thats what saved your asses💯 If your bost was newer; I guarantee that she would be gone. I like my older boat Serenity is an amazing ship and she'll never let me down 💯
Wow , she is one good boat. Impressive The bare polyester needs to dry for a long time , especially around the deep scratches. But she is fixable. Get her out to be fixed and give her a lot of TLC. Good to see you both in good spirits.
Don't let the negative comments bring you down...Anyone who has followed your channel for any amount of time knows that your have done far more for the ocean and the environment than the minor damage that may have been caused by an accidental mistake which you had no control over...Solider on and good luck...
You guys just won my heart, 2nd time stumbling over one of your videos and when I saw how masterfully you both handled a sailor's worst nightmare, I was sold ❤ and then you go and surprise me with....can we do anything to help restore the reef I melted into a unsailable puddle. RESPECT!!!
Wow... She floats! I am joyously reilived and tearfully extatic for you guys! Posideon said, "No, not today." Yet, he also said remember me. I suggest strongly honoring The Main Dude highly as you set out on your next crossing after the healing of your big girl. I Must offer congrats, kids. This was tough, but I think you got it handled. A lesson can be hard, crushing. They can be tools for wisdom for those who see and hear. Sounds like you have. All good. Rock on. Live the dream! B.Swift 😊😊
Oops... bad fingers. Wrong button. BS 😎🤙 P.S. Ignore psycho Reef Police. You guys had zero control over that CF event. I've never lived through a storm at sea. However, I live in Central Oklahoma, USA. Ground Zero Tornado Alley, they call it. You guys had about the same chance of moving your big darlin' as a bunch of folks around Choctaw, Oklahoma had to move their houses last night when an F3 came to visit. Call 'em clueless cityfied loons, and giggle at them guys.
Great video. Hi from North Queensland Australia. I'm happy you got your boat off the reef again. If you are ever in Australia let me know, I'd like to show you both around the Cairns area. Keep up the good work.
Yes, one thing that didnt show up in our videos was not only did the local wind bring waves to rock the boat, but there was also a long distance, very large south swell at the same time (unrelated), that was dumping loads of water over the reef into the atoll. This is actually the main reason we had enough water under the boat to pull her off (also helped the local wind waves). The tide changes are very minimal in this part of the world so it wasn't really a high tide that helped us. SO lucky how it all worked out.
Ali, Ben ur very special incredible individuals, don't ever lose that humble outlook, the Universe was watching over u and the boat. We are all very grateful ur safe and FLOATING!!!
Super happy that you guys salvaged the boat from almost dry reef. I gotta say I was pretty worried when that first video came out. Kiana’s hull and rudder system are amazingly tuff!
So happy for you both that you have managed to rescue the boat and no major damage. Just subscribed and looking forward to following your future adventures.

i consider myself a kindred spirit from BC and so happy for you. unfortunately i am not in a position to help financially but just know i am with you in spirit.
Thank you!
Watching this journey made me live thorough my nightmare of something similar, but at the end of the day you saved your boat. The best situation that may come out of this is getting those wonderful people a proper boat. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you!
I think I finally found my new favorite sailing channel after years of searching.
Thanks
Thanks Barney!
I'm so happy to see that damages are manageable and to see you smiling again!
I can't believe your good fortune. Initial shock has worn off and we are so thankful she's floating with minor damage.
... When you said "were floating" and "hey we still have a boat" nearly brought a tear to my eye again.
So happy you guys are floating again!
Fair winds
YOU WORKED SOOO HARD and at the same time you are SOOOO LUCKY - YOU HAVE YOUR BOAT STILL - CONGRATULATIONS!!! (well built boat!)
Thanks!! Yes we have to redo that electrical work when we have the parts available.
You were very lucky - huge thanks to Bruno and the rest of the team!
What an amazing community! You guys are truly blessed they helped you!
You never gave up! Congrats 🍾🎉
good job holding it together throughout all this! handled it very well great job be proud of yourselves!
So lucky you had people like Bruno and his people to help you in this terrible event. Chins up and keep the dream alive. As you say they reef will recover as it is a living eco system.
Yes Bruno is the man!!
SO HAPPY YOU TWO ARE ON THE MEND ! AND YOUR SAILBOAT ! JUST AMAZING !
PTSD /post traumatic stress disorder , it is a very real thing and you may feel its results
for many months to come , confidence is effected , and fear will linger but its normal .
you'll find yourselves taking precautions like never before . Its actually a blessing of sorts ,
you'll be safer in the long run , bravery and risk taking wont be as desirable ...but that's just fine,,,
What a crazy amazing wonderful scary joyful escapade !!!
Thank you!
Your gratitude to that amazing community is very heartwarming!!!
Sooooo HAPPY for you and what an incredible story for the books. Wish you all the best with the repairs and fair winds☺️
Good tips! Yep we definitely need to re-do the electrical in that area. Thanks!
Looking forward to where you all go next!
Amazing when thing get better is done by your god when it turns bad its humans mistake.. its humans saving the day. Very happy for them.

Thanks!
Those Wonderful people saved U guys! Bless them all! So glad 2 c U guys save Ur home! 👌👍❤️
Well done for getting out of that situation and your diplomacy in negotiating with the islanders in regard to the refloating.Biggest thanks though should go to the islanders themselves for the effort they put in.
So glad you had plenty of great help getting out of this bad situation. The coral will grow back fine, that's what it does.
Cheers

Its so good to hear you have your home back, in one piece. The locals are heroes for helping so much.
You guys are so awesome! Cheers ! Happy to see everyone is safe and the boat is floating ! Best of luck to you guys !
I have a CheoyLee 32 offshore ... We have simuler keels .. 2" hand laid fiberglass and 3" in the bow. Thats what saved your asses💯
If your bost was newer; I guarantee that she would be gone.
I like my older boat Serenity is an amazing ship and she'll never let me down 💯
2” …that is ridiculous!
@@markthomasson5077 thats how they were made back in the 70's
@@Viper_Poker yup, my dads first boat was a Van de Stadt Pioneer, and that was thick …but not 2” perhaps 3/4”
Wow , she is one good boat. Impressive
The bare polyester needs to dry for a long time , especially around the deep scratches.
Thanks Max!
You guys just won my heart, 2nd time stumbling over one of your videos and when I saw how masterfully you both handled a sailor's worst nightmare, I was sold ❤ and then you go and surprise me with....can we do anything to help restore the reef I melted into a unsailable puddle. RESPECT!!!
Welcome to thr channel :)
Same!
Incredible experience , wonderful islanders helping you and incredible results. Highest Blessings to all involved.
Wow...
BS 😎🤙
P.S. Call 'em clueless cityfied loons,
and giggle at them guys.
Great video. Hi from North Queensland Australia. I'm happy you got your boat off the reef again. If you are ever in Australia let me know, I'd like to show you both around the Cairns area. Keep up the good work.
What a blessing for all those things to align, allowing for your dreams to continue 🙏
Awesome that u saved the boat w the community
Ali, Ben ur very special incredible individuals, don't ever lose that humble outlook, the Universe was watching over u and the boat. We are all very grateful ur safe and FLOATING!!!
What a wonderful island, it’s great to see how you both coped so well together with near disaster too. Glad that you are both safe.
Super happy that you guys salvaged the boat from almost dry reef. I gotta say I was pretty worried when that first video came out. Kiana’s hull and rudder system are amazingly tuff!
Yeah, well the first video was titled "We lost our boat" so...
So happy for you both that you have managed to rescue the boat and no major damage. Just subscribed and looking forward to following your future adventures.
Thank you!
