- In this video, I'll show you how I grew sweet potatoes in containers--5 gallon buckets, storage bins, 15 gallon plastic rings, and cardboard boxes--and compare which method worked best. I'll also talk about how important faith is in gardening and in life.

What's one of your favorite ways to cook sweet potatoes?
I love to throw them in the microwave and just eat them plain! My hubby likes them with cinnamon and butter!
@@synolve they're great! Lots of ways to cook them. The ones from the garden are even better. Plus they last a long time. Keep for up to a year if stored in a cool, dark, dry place. And you can regrow them the following year fron your leftovers.

Just a Note... I learned from Trial n Error, To only put 1 , or maybe 2
Potato Slips ... To one of those Plastic Tubs , So they would produce More potatoes, because They had more Room to Grow. 🙂

Thanks for your videos. My husband left at almost 101 yrs old last April. My gardening helps me every day. I also have 11 pet bunnies that kerp me busy. The are free roam 4, in the house and rest in a nice tiny house next to my home. I have a 30x40 ft garden so grow lots of my food and share with neighbors. God bless you and your family. 😊

You have to put chicken wire or some kind of fence around the cardboard, otherwise the rain will bust it apart.

Here in Northern California our grocery store , WinCo , has cardboard boxes that are one and a half feet by one and a half feet and one and a half feet high !!!! These boxes contain the WinCo store plastic bags !!!! WinCo gives them to us for free ; we use the boxes to grow food in our community garden to supplement the produce we give away from our community food pantry !!!! The nice thing about these boxes is that one box will fit in another box to make a doubly strong box that lasts one growing season !!!! Just right to grow sweet potatoes in !!!! One sweet 🥔 potato plant in each double box !!!! And at the end of the growing season , just recycle the cardboard boxes !!!! The boxes compliment our raised beds and can be moved around for ultimate sun and shade locations !!!!

Most TH-cam people attach music to their videos and i find it so annoying. I would rather hear the natural sounds of gardening and nature. I turn the volume down then turn it back up when you start talking.

Looks like a tomatillo plant...great in salsa Verde. Hope you let it grow 🪴 But as we all know aw weed is a plant that grows where where it isn't wanted...a rose could be a weed if it's coming up in a field of prize winning peonies 😊

I had that same little plant come up from my watermelons. I’ve learned they are ‘ground cherries’… they’re in the tomato family, have a similar paper like covering like a tomatillo that looks like a Chinese lantern. About 50% of the articles I’ve read about them say they contain ‘toxins’ if eaten when green so let them turn yellow/tan… they are delicious!! Don’t miss the ones that haven fallen off the vine on their own! Most of the ones I’ve collected from the ground looking rather hopeless have been perfectly beautiful sweet little fruits! I’ve learned jam recipes and other uses. To me, they don’t taste anything like a tomato … more like a sweet berry …. and I’ve eaten several green ones (i actually prefer the tartness of the green ones… but the ‘toxin’ references ???) .. I have nurtured my plant since harvesting my watermelons fully and it is producing like crazy! I’m hoping to get some seeds for planting next year. ☮️

The "weed" in there is called Love in the Puff. It's actually used in bouquets.

It might be because the cardboard box and the quarter barrel allowed some of the deep roots reach the native soil.

Definitely seem to enjoy the larger containers.
Mine too they seem to work better and are still not too unwielding
my conclusion is those 1/3 tank where in contact to the ground the other where not direct contact and capillary action to absorb water was bigger against those of blue buckets and great containers but thanks for your effort

I actually think, besides possible sun and container size,the real difference is the unrestrained roots. The buckets and storage bin had a bottom whereas the others did not and had contact with the earth. From personal experience, an open bottom container makes the difference

Small potatoes may be a water issue or a phosphorus issue. The smaller the container the more attention to watering is required. I try to water mine at least twice a week but in summer I may need to water every other day.
I have Beauregards growing in raised beds and slips of purple type ready to put in bins.
I don't think that Japanese type gets very big anyway.
I might try a few of these purple slips in 5 gallon buckets.
I use a cup of 2-8-8 in my 5 gallon potato buckets.

You can eat the leaves just lightly cook them. There great taste.

A Tip: sweet potatoes grow tubers along the vines, but only where the vines are buried. So after a slip (vine) has began to grow, lay the vine horizontally on soil, bury the vine, leaving only the leaves above the soil.
To add to my comment: You could pick off each of those vines, bury them horizontally in soil, leaving the leaves above soil, puts off many tubers. Square footage is needed for a big sweet potato harvest. Because they grow horizontally. Other potatoes grow more vertically.

I appreciated your video of the different results. I too am experimenting with growing yams. I have several in the 5-gal. buckets, some in a very lg. black container I put into the ground with sm. cut up branches on the bottom & my soils on top of that. I have more to start again, which may go into boxes. We have sand in our yard on the coast, which makes growing a challenge, especially with gophers.
They are in the morning glory family so the flowers look rather like morning glories. The leaves are edible.
I enjoyed all of your music, by the way. I usually wish people would leave their music out and just talk, but I did like yours.

I usually do about 3
You may not be leaving them growing long enough. Plant these in the spring and I think they grow around 90 days or so. I think you will get bigger ones.

90-120 days. The warmer and sunnier the climate and spot, the faster the sweet potatoes mature. The smaller the container, the fewer the slips it can handle. Five gallon holds probably 1 slip. Always use very loose soil.
Yup... last year I had a banner crop of them in my 4 raised 4x8 beds.
This year all my tubers looked like fat roots....
Both years the leaves and vines were great looking.
The culprit I think was my soil was a tad too compacted. :(

If I had to guess I would say big bins will be best for sweet potatoes.
I grow small red and small brown potatoes in 5 gallon buckets.
I plant five buckets every month.
The small potatoes can be taken after 70 days.
I hope to plant large baker potatoes in bins in the spring. They take over 100 days.
I live in Florida so I hope to grow new potatoes through the winter.
We will see if I can keep them a live.
Yes, the bigger bins worked best for the sweet potatoes. That's a good idea about succession planting in buckets. Do you store your potatoes for long term?

I am given to understand that once the tops die back you can put the bucket in a cool, dry place and they will keep for months without special care and can be dumped and used as needed. I have yet to try that but I hope to.
This is my first year Growing
potatoes. I am still working out the fertilizer schedule and how much water to give them.
Sweet potatoes are easy but like it hot. Most potatoes like planting soil around 60F. The plants do best betwee 40F and 80F.
That is spring and fall weather for me. I am hoping to keep the plants alive through the winter by covering on frost nights.
I am growing some buckets in 42" Kidde pools filled with mulch.
They tend to stay wetter in the Kidde pool mulch. I drill overflow holes in the sides of the pools so they hold some water when it rains
Some buckets are sitting on two 4x4s fence posts laid 6 inches apart.
It remains to be seen what the potatoes like best.
I planted my third set of five buckets this morning. The first set will be ready in the next couple of weeks.
I am concerned that I may have put too much nitrogen on that first set.
I tend to overdo things.

This is my second yearbon both potatoes and sweet potatoes. I cut my 55 gallon drums in 3rds and that works really well. Use the middle section as a ring. Those are great for sweet potatoes. Hay bales work great for both sweet potatoes and Irish potatoes. I probably grew the biggest ones in those, but let them start to break down a bit before you plant. The composting hay may actually help keep the potatoes warm in case you get a frost.

They're super easy to grow. You can even sprout your own from an old sweet potato. The main thing is they don't like to be cold amd they take a long time, like 100 days, depending on the variety and your weather.

When to cut the vines for growing
Where did you get your plastic ring? I like the idea of being closer in contact with the native soil for grabbing water and nutrients, although it does allow for moles or voles to come in and chew on the tubers if they are in your area.
I made my plastic rings by cutting a 55-gallon plastic barrel into 3 sections (roughly 18 gallons each ring). Thankfully, I haven't had any problems with voles or moles.

Are you supposed to use food safe buckets? I am hoping to experiment with growing sweet potatoes this summer.
Yes. Food grade buckets. Honestly, I'm not a doctor or chemist, but as long as it's a new bucket (or one that hasn't been used for toxic chemicals) it should be safe. But don't use a bucket that's been used for harmful chemicals or paint or something.

Just make sure they are sturdy and level.
How do you start growing sweet potatoes do you buy them or buy sweet potato seeds I want to try
You can purchase slips or start your own slips (easy to do). Slips a little sprouts that come off the sweet potatoes. Bury a sweet potato in a tray of damp disregard and they will sprout. Or stick a sweet potato in a jar of water--half in and half out--and it will start to sprout. Knee the sprouts get a few inches long, break it off from the surface of the potato. Stick it in a jar of water for a few weeks and it will send out roots. Now you have a slip you can plant. You can also buy them online and they will ship them to you.

What makes the potatoes crack? Lack of water? I've had a few regular potatoes do that
Sorry, thought I had already replied to this. I think it's actually too much water. However, you can still eat the cracked ones. They're not as pretty, but they still taste fine and the cracks will usually heal over during the curing process.

Growing them for firstbtime this yr. Have started in house. Will be at least 2 months i guess before shoots come then put them in water so probably June will put the shoots in ground. Hope it works! I l9ve sweet potatoes. Eat every day.😊

I've never tried it but someone said get a contractor bag and you can wrap your boxes so they don't fall apart. Not so sure how safe that is

It looks like yours soil is deficient on the sweet potatoes. Like lacking organic material. Seems like plain old dirt and the buckets were only half filled. I grow in buckets and have better yields bc I use premium soil sand and compost mixed together. Your bucket yields will be better. 😊

They look a little more like tomatillos..but both grow the same. If you let them ripen until fruit falls off the plant, it's then ready to eat. both are delicious!
Those little bubble fruits are potato seeds and are toxic, they belong to the same family as deadly nightshade. This happens after the potato has flowered and if left will produce these fruits.

A five gallon bucket is much too small for sweet potatoes. The plant doesn't get enough water and nutrients, and the potatoes can't expand - the soil and bucket walls don't have any expansion space. Nice try, though. I'd recommend just planting them into the ground - more of everything with no container cost.

Why don’t you plant them on the ground instead of a pot?
They say sweet potatoes are quite an invasive plant, its roots will survive winter in the soil and give shoots next spring. So they can take over the whole garden, if not restricted by the walls of a container of some sort.
There could be many reasons. 1) The soil may not be right for potatoes. 2) Some people have space constrictions. 3) It easier to harvest from buckets. 4) Buckets can be moved from place to place. 5) Buckets can be used on patios, driveways, balconies, and decks. 6) Buckets are lighter and easier to move than larger containers.
@@juliaadelkhanova400 thankfully where I live, sweet potatoes don't survive the winter, but but their cousins, morning glories, do. But yes, if the winter was mild where tou live, buckets/containers might be a way to ensure sweet potatoes don't become invasive.

@@pastorchrismullis I have not. My garden isn’t very big and I have heard that ground cherries spread like weeds. Just don’t have the space for that!
The 5 Gallon buckets don’t seem worth the effort.
I guess it depends on each person's situation. I think they would have done better with more light. They were getting shade from an arch trellis. I'll have to try it again with more light this season.
