Some general information about Fur Elise:
Fur Elise was not published during Beethoven's lifetime, only being discovered (by Ludwig Nohl) forty years after his death, and may be termed either a Bagatelle or an Albumblatt. The identity of "Elise" is unknown; researchers have suggested Therese Malfatti, Elisabeth Röckel or Elise Barensfeld.
The piece is basically in rondo form, ABACA. It is in A minor and in 3/8 time. It begins with an A minor theme marked 'Poco moto' (in some motion), with the left hand playing arpeggios alternating between A minor and E major. The same motifs follow around C major and G major, before returning to the original theme.
It has been suggested that the letters that spell 'Elise' can be decoded as the first three notes of the piece. Because an E♭ is called an Es in German and is pronounced as "S", that makes E-(L)-(I)-S-E: E-(L)-(I)-E♭-E, which by enharmonic equivalents sounds the same as the written notes E-(L)-(I)-D♯-E.

Thank you for the clear instructions. As a 67yr old man trying to learn piano because of the lockdowns in my country, I am grateful to find the videos. My grandson showed me this website a few weeks ago and I have been hooked since then.

Excellent tutorial. You saved me from another tutorial who taught this in 3 separate parts very well, but each lesson was disjointed enough that without your help; I couldn't connect his lessons without watching yours. Your fingering is better (similar but slightly better).
One criticism: you end with the right hand on C & A, but you say E & A.

I have never been interested in playing any sort of instrument until about a month ago. Tomorrow I am secretly picking up a Roland RD-2000 with Rolands 200 watt amp and Rolands RPU-3 foot switch pedal and headphones and ( she doesn’t know ). Tomorrow will be my first time touching keys. I want to master the piano over the rest of my life and I turn 60 in one month.
Long story short, my wife had 12 years of lessons and played piano for the church for 25 yrs. She is 60 and started playing when she was 4 yrs old. So, she’s pretty much a pro. I am not going to tell her and will surprise her when I sit down at her piano and play “Fur Elise”.
BTW, I’m putting the Roland RD2000 piano in my home office and only playing it with the amp when she is not home otherwise it will be with headphones. She never comes into my office because it’s far enough away from the central part of the house and is over the garage. She’s going to freak. Wish me luck. ☺️👍
