Couldn't agree more, even passive listening is great, it trains your ear, and when you do active listening your realise that the passive listening has had a big impact.

I honestly avoid listening at early stages because it brings me frustration. I understood you were thinking about it a bit in the same way so what changed your mind? What's the switch you've done to stop seeing listening as such?
I changed my mind when I started just forcing myself to watch TH-cam videos in German that I nominally couldn't understand.
With time, I was able to understand really key sentences because key sentences are usually pretty simple, which grew my confidence by a lot.
On top of that, the amount of vocab you can pick up through comprehensible input (seeing something on the screen and hearing them repeat that word multiple times) is really encouraging.
