Prof. Tony Lynch - The Importance of Listening to International Students

  • Professor Tony Lynch, Personal Chair of Student Learning (English for Academic Purposes), presented his inaugural lecture entitled "The Importance of Listening to International Students".
The title is intentionally ambiguous. It refers firstly to the importance for international students of having adequate comprehension of spoken English; and it also alludes to the importance for the University of taking account of international students' perceptions of studying at Edinburgh.
In the lecture, Prof Lynch addresses both these issues. In the first part he draws on his research into the experience of second language listeners, in order to outline the processes underlying comprehension, the problems likely to arise, and possible solutions to those difficulties.
In the second part he discuss postgraduates' responses to an ELTC (English Language Teaching Centre) survey on linguistic and cultural aspects of studying at Edinburgh. He argues that relatively minor adjustments by and for international students would help smooth their path to academic success.
You can download the supporting slides for this lecture here: edin.ac/2kAvPSO
Recorded on Wednesday 16 May 2012 at the Auditorium lecture theatre, Business School, The University of Edinburgh.

Astute, humorous and informative. "The importance of Listening to International Students". Dialects and cultures do separate people at times (that was an under estimation of the fact by the way). "Practice Listening" in a relaxed atmosphere with others alleviates the formal aspect of linguistics and possibly bring about a better understanding between one another. Yet, I still cannot help but wonder why we are introducing acronyms into a language that we are already having a difficult time understanding. Strikes me as, adding a log to a fire that is already burning out of control.
    Awesome lecture Prof. Lynch

What I don’t understand is why non-native speakers of English are much more fluent AT English than native speakers of English lmao. Like people who are so good at English grammar, writing, etc are really bad at speaking like damn

It's only my point of view, I believe that if you want to follow a lecture at university, you need to be able to understand advertising on tv. That's why two of the main skills to improve are not only listening and vocaburaly but also your speed of comprehension.
It may happend that the same information when it is being transmited faster it will be more difficult to be understood, which leads to frecuent breakdowns of comunacation.

Between Saddam and Bush-Blear, the war between them Iraq destroyed including it culture and educational foundation of Iraq. Even now, war has been continuing in Iraq and until close this war Iraq could not advance ahead into it cultural and religious rituals and technology and engineering.

Do not blame the West. Your society is backward, mired in labyrinths of ignorance. You have a society, most of which are afflicted with a mental illness called (Shi’a Ahl al-Bayt), with the rest of the myths and superstitions that society consumes and pollutes children and youth with day and night. If you find a cure for these mentally afflicted and polluted peoples. It is possible to leave Iraq in the time of bygone centuries and catch up with the world.
