My little words cant really describe your wonderful series of vlogs especially this one. I am a PhD student in my last year. You have inspired me a lot to work harder and to do an excellent job. I wish to meet you one day to thank you in person. I wish you always all the success, peace and happiness.

So wonderful you are, I am glad to find you in youtube and watch your videos. This video really inspires me to finish my PhD, I'm in my final year already and feel demotivated but when I watched this video it refreshed me again to write a good story to tell after 20 years.
    God bless you

One moment was when I was 18 doing an apprenticeship as a chef and I asked my dad if he liked his job as a diesel mechanic because he had done it all his life - he told me he did it because it’s all he knew. In that moment I felt for him feeling that was all that was open to him, and I also knew I would never spend my life doing something because it was all I knew.
I hadn’t thought about this in a while. Thank you Tara :)

Thanks for all of yours vlogs Tara. I'm a master degree student in Italy and my dream is to stay in university for an academic career. I'm very scared about my real capacities and skills but these vlogs are extremely useful for stay on real things and to find the right motivation!!

So, I found myself watching this video minutes before my meeting with supervisors for discussing my phd draft. I have always been irrationally terrified of meeting my supervisors every time in and as my three as phd student, even if they are good people. And for the first time, I feel not-so-nervous in meeting them. Thank you so much for the wonderful message!

Thank you, Tara, it's very inspiring and encouraging. I am trying re-connect and trying to find how-to although it is a bit challenging and now I find this vlog. Thank you for not only giving a guideline but also useful practices. You're gorgeous.

Thank you Tara, Motivation can stay 'theoretical' so long as I can dig mine out for work when I need it-daily life can get in the way but your half hour bit helps get going and once you get going it is suddenly OK to keep going. Regards to Doris-what a cluey mum, Cathy J.

Another great post Prof Brabazon. I really enjoyed your motivational discussion of tools for success in graduate school. I'm currently enjoying 'Peak' by Anders Ericsson, which discusses the elements in achieving peak performance. I think it would be highly relevant to your students and viewers.
In addition to the OST principle for harnessing intrinsic motivation, I also like using the principles of David Allen's Getting Things Done (GTD), which uses 'horizons of focus' to track large life-goals, and the projects that will move me towards those goals. Here is the typical GTD breakdown of the horizons of focus:
    50,000 feet - Purpose (Career / Lifestyle)
    40,000 feet - 3-5 Year Vision (Mission)
    30,000 feet - 1-2 Year Goals / Directions (S.M.A.R.T.)
20,000 feet - Areas of Focus (Roles & Responsibility)
    10,000 feet - Current Projects
I use XMind (free mind-mapping software) to visualise and edit my mind map of goals and dependent projects. www.xmind.net
I also use OmniFocus (not free sadly) for task management, as each project unfolds into a set of daily and weekly tasks which must be harmonised within my calendar. The Desktop and iPhone apps are very powerful once mastered. www.omnigroup.com/omnifocus
yED is an invaluable flowchart tool for visualising any process, from biochemical pathway to a departmental org-chart. Its free, easy to use and produces publication quality diagrams. www.yworks.com/products/yed
Evernote is my favourite tool for note taking and collecting learning resources, links, images, PDFs, sound files and video. There is a free account version, cloud storage, and sync with mobile devices, so notes can be with you at all times. evernote.com/?var=3
For leveraging software to aid in learning large amounts of facts (as required in medical school and many other post graduate areas), Anki utilises a well established algorithm for spaced repetition of facts (presented via flash card). It is free, requires some effort to learn, but provides an elegant implementation of spaced repetition software (SRS) in the learning process. ankisrs.net

+Jacob Ross Jacob mate - always call me Tara! This is absolutely fascinating analysis here. I've used the GTD - very good on perspective I think, which Campbell's model is not. And it is so useful visualize time. I think one of the reasons we treat time so cheaply is because we don't see it - we simply burn through it. Thanks so much for the great links here. That will help our crew enormously. Keep in touch, Jacob - and thanks for your time (valuable time!) for posting this information! Txxx

My media recommendations for you would include The Wire, True Detective, The Tunnel (UK version), Halt and Catch Fire, Orphan Black, The Path and Last Week Tonight. Looking forward to your next Vlog.

+Jacob Ross Mate - we have very similar tastes. You are stuck with me now, Jacob. You will get all our Office references now, with the thick of it ;) Don't tell your colleagues ;) I am Malcolm. My exec is Sam. You get it :) And I love The Wire, True Detective, The Tunnel (brilliant - binge watched that one). Orphan Black - absolutely. I'll find the rest! Mate that is terrific. And we'll keep talking Iain Banks. His books - and his audiobooks - are my favourite fiction :) You are FAB. Txxx

By far my most favorite video!
Although I do not aspire to get a PhD or further my academic achievements, these videos(this one in particular) has helped me better understand my business and better understand my branding.
I'm now much more confident in the success of my business and have you thank :)
Ones more - keep up the great work!

My pleasure mate :) In one of my prior lives, I taught marketing and the media, and creative industries. So I am glad some of these strategies are of use. All of us - what ever our occupation these days - must use a lot of the strategies for running a business. We need accountability, transparency, time management, project management, confidence, motivation, luck and belief. You keep in touch - and thanks for being you! Txxx

Hi Tara, you are a motivation! I am 26 and submitting my thesis next month. Weirdly, I can relate to everything you said. I will have no regrets whatsoever either if I am to die tomorrow. Well, I will definitely feel bad for people around me but myself, no regrets.

It is just no possible to outcompete the world. There is always mane, not one, people with the same mentality but better skills working on the same field. This is motivation through deceit, this does not work if you want to assess the truthfulness of a claim.

    Fantastic Vlog Tara, thank you.
I am a graduate of UWA (MEMS) myself so I totally know what you mean when you speak about how very hard it was to fit into this big posh university. LOL. But I have some fantastic memories and had wonderful lecturers.
Also know Burns beach - the holiday village and a very pretty beach. I knew Professor Bosworth as well, who I think is now at the University of Oxford. Very nice man.

+Bernadine De Beaux So lovely to hear from you wonderful Bernadine! Yes Burns Beach still remains tucked away, but a big and posh Burns Beach has exploded a little bit down the road :) And yes, Richard was transformative of my life. I wouldn't be here without him. A great reminder of why professors should teach first year students ... I always think the two great jobs at universities are teaching first years and supervising PhD students. They are the two moments of pivot in a scholarly life. You take care and thank you so much for this lovely post! Txxx

    I'Ve got shouted from p
supervisor just now😢 because ofasking him of discussion time. He replied me by saying Im not your servant . Do by yourself. I guess he is busy but how can I know he is in good mood nor busy . Seem like he is not having a clear vision on me and Im emotional person 😪. Could you please suggest me any of your Vlog number for such kind of situation . Thanks.

I'm so sorry this happened to you. As busy as he is, he could have worded things more professionally and with respect. Here are two vlogs that might help you: Vlog 147 "Difficult Situations" and Vlog 175. "Why your supervisor does not give you feedback" Hope they give you some reprieve and give you some practical advice to move forward.
