What is particularly poignant about this vlog is the openness and sharing about vulnerability, then the way this can be turned to success. This dean is outstanding; how lucky this university is #hero

2:24 looking for a sweet spot between hubris/overconfidence and self-doubt/under-confidence
2:50 create a position for you where you are able to evaluate/judge your own outcomes, your own goals, your own outputs, without endlessly deferring to judgement and views of others
3:10 you start the PhD thinking that you are capable and you finish the PhD understanding what you are capable of
    3:40 model of confidence RDC
3:50 Reasonable: you don’t waver between overconfidence and under-confidence
4:00 Demonstratable: it not a feeling, an opinion, a vibe, or an internal feeling, it’s the performance of expertise
5:00 Containable: you judge your expertise on the basis of your particular competences
6:05 select 2-5 people that they don’t gain anything from offering that advice
6:56 listen to feedback: 80% nonsense 20% crucial and integral to your development
7:25 get the content and implement the feedback and don’t worry about the clothing emotional part of the feedback
8:15 Work hard: confidence is gained when you become better smarter and stronger
    8:56 measure yourself against yourself
9:30 gain expertise from working in area of weakness
9:40 list down/ accumulate little every achievements in the CV
10:52 by naming your fear, you’re controlling it and managing it
14:42 the greatest fear could become the greatest gift/ experience in your life
16:17 you *chose* to do a PhD so *enjoy* it
17:20 as a PhD student creating a supportive environment for others
18:55 to be part of the solution rather than part of the problem

So powerful! I watched this video 10 times ❤️ and have shown it to my friends both academic and non academics. I just feel so blessed knowing that the dean of graduate research is someone I know on a personal / professional level but also someone who has a profound impact on my emerging academic career! You are just amazing and a unicorn my darling ❤️🦄
