  • Writing cannot be added to an already full life. How you think about time, space, productivity, efficiency, success and achievement must all transform. But how do you calibrate your daily patterns and behaviours for writing? This vlog provides some answers to this question.

    11:07 Make sure that the desk is clean
    12:29 Each week construct seven writing priorities
    13:28 Structurally stopping all distractions
    13:51 Take breaks
    15:16 Think about the people with whom you spend time
    16:52 Consider your relationship with sound
    18:17 Say no a lot
    19:26 Address your dependencies
    21:03 Make sure that you improve something every day
    23:00 Stop the gothic self-talk
    25:26 If you can't measure it, it doesn't exist
    27:10 Pick your rabbit
    28:55 Change your attitude to failure
    30:08 Have the courage to be different
    31:07 Schedule writing
    32:01 Control what you can control

    Amazing vlog, dear professor Tara! Thank you so much for these amazing bits of advice. I find them extremely helpful and strengthening. I`m in my final year of PhD(the 6th) and I`ve wasted the past three years complaining, avoiding, in denial and in self-denigration. Hopefully, with your help, I will be able to overcome my fear of writing and finish to a PhD standard. God bless you!

    this is a great video!! Unfortunately, due to the Pandemic, I got stranded at my parents house since March. So what had to be a quick visit has turned into half a year living with my parents (yay!). It has been beyond hard to get anything done. It is extremely difficult to make my family understand that I need a schedule, that I need quiet space, that I am not just "studying" (like for an exam)... ugh! This has been the least productive stage of my PhD and I've become more and more frustrated. I must learn to say NO often!! Thanks for all your wonderful tips and for sharing your knowledge with us!!!

      Good morning TheAARSAA - I am so sorry you are going through this. What I'd advise is work out an alternative space for any work that is not lab-based. We have wonderful engineers who come to our quiet zone once a day to write up their daily results. See if that is possible... You are fabulous - hang in there. txxx

    hi Tara, Thank you for another informative video. can you make one about how to deal with institutional microaggression for minority PhD students in a hyper hegemonic masculine university...

      @@officeofgraduateresearchfl9343 Hi Tara, thanks for the attention, I am wondering whether I should leave my wonderful amazing experienced caring supervisor & somewhat racist uni, to another university with a doubled percentage of international PhDs & admin staff and a recently graduated supervisor who is also caring and kind...here is my email if you need case studies (violetazyc@gmail.com), I also know 3 previous PhDs who have left for the same reason. My department hasn't had a none caucasian PhD graduate since 1997, now I know why, at least partially...

    @MrAitorSJ 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Gurl what works for you won't necessarily work for everyone/anyone else. Some people write better in a busy cafe. Some people need to alternate between the two...

    • @officeofgraduateresearchfl9343
      @officeofgraduateresearchfl9343  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Greetings wonderful S - you are absolutely right. That's why I've talked about managing the soundscape. If you want silence - you've got to construct that. If you want sonic life around you - you've got to construct that. And yes - the dream is always to create alternate spaces for different types of drafting. The point that worries me is that - in the contemporary universities - the spaces for these 'choices' are shrinking. So the time we have - we have to use. And so many of us are battling to find a fab five minutes for coffee :). But you are absolutely right - construct sonic spaces that enable your best writing self. Biggest hug to ya, S. txxx
