- Theo Kellison's Makers Challenge for TH-cam rockhounding channels is in its fourth year, and the projects are beautiful and varied. For this year's challenge, Jim and Kate decided to work together to create an unusual and beautiful pendant from Montana rocks, using petrified wood, jasper, Montana agate, Montana sapphires and faceted smoky quarts to create a one-of-a-kind piece of wearable art. Like most things in their lives, the project doesn't go QUITE as planned - but the bumps in the road are part of what make the adventure worthwhile!

Yay I love the rock makers challenge
:) Thanks - me too!
like a rock hounders family crest ! very beautiful collaboration of skills !
It turned out awesome! You did a great job on the stone, Jim! Thanks for sharing!
:) Thank you!
Oh so beautiful 🤩 The two of you made a lovely piece of jewelry. The choice of rocks are so very pretty. I love jasper and that slab is got. The agate is too. Cute little pebbles surrounding the top heart are very pretty too. Oh, the backing stone is pretty also.
Thanks. :) The "pebbles" are actually sapphires, albeit small ones - and not polished.
You are amazing Jim!
Such a cool tool! Thanks for showing us. When I was 17 I got to visit a diamond faceting studio in Amsterdam to watch how they did it. And then they locked us in their diamond jewelry sales room and let us try on all the diamond rings and jewelry we wanted to. 😃 I got my picture taken with a diamond ring on each finger.
That sounds amazing!
Over fifty years ago, I was also in Amsterdam with a tour group from the U.S. One of the stops was at diamond cutters' studio. Unfortunately it was on a Saturday, so no diamond cutters were working. A few packets of different colored diamonds were passed among all of us. I recall that one was yellow, a rare color if I'm remembering correctly.
Mary, it turned out beautifully!
I can't wait! I love Makers Challenge week! Best week on TH-cam! And the dynamic duo starts us off! Awesome!❤🎉❤
LOL, Lisa, thank you so much. What do you think of my thumbnail? :D
@@KatyDidRocks It's hilarious! But the project turned out so pretty! I loved the two different materials! And then a smoky quartz! Beautiful! ❤
Thank you for your videos.
This one is special because I learned about faceting.... something new to me. Keep up with the interesting content. Mike
Super project for the makers challenge, so pretty!
Glad you like it. :)
What a wonderful ideal. It's beautiful! I love the fractures in the gem - it's so sparkaley.
Glad you like it!
That machine that can cut diamonds is very interesting, I feel like it would be easy to mess up a stone on it for some reason. The cuts looked good but that stone had a lot of imperfections in it.
I loved the heart pendant! So beautiful! 😍
Thank you! 😊
thank you, foe being real people smiles
:)
Can't wait!!!!
Thanks, Josh!
Gorgeous, great team work.🫶
Thank you 🙌
So many beautiful, er, fun lapidary machines! Thank you for explaining the faceting machine. It looks pretty high tech. Neat project!
Thanks, Gwynn. Yes, Jim likes the Cadillac of machines... but he loves it!
So pretty!
Thank you! 😊
That was fun and very informative. Thank you. ❤😊❤
Glad you enjoyed it! :)
I love the included fractures, notes perfectly...
Jim and Kate I'd buy it!
Glad you like it! :)
@KatyDidRocks I have some things I'd like to facet. However, I don't believe I'm patient enough to do so!
I simply love the non perfect items.
It's my favorite time of the year! Makers Challenge time!!!
Great job to both of you! It's so creative and beautiful, even with the fractures in the smokey quartz!
Thanks, Pamela. :)
Outback Gold Fever might be something you and Jim would enjoy😊.
Thanks for the recommendation - I'll check them out!
I love this video! Reminds me of watching my dad.
:) Did your dad facet things?
@@KatyDidRocks He tried doing it by hand because he didn't have any fancy (nor could he afford it) equipment. He ended up going back to the cabachon jewelry or would buy premade faceted stones to add to his rock jewelry. I actually bought and gave him some garnets and asked for one necklace back. My former husband gave a bunch to my oldest daughter who was taking a jewelry making class in HS and she made me a squash blossom necklace. It was gorgeous. So proud of her.
Love watching you make new & unusual projects. Like the "Hearts for Rocks" . . Hope Mr. Did can find an Oregon Sun Stone for faceting.
Thanks!
You two are talented! And I learned how they cut facets in gemstones. Nicely done.
Thanks - I'm glad you enjoyed it!
This is my first maker's challenge week!!! I'm so excited!!! Beautiful heart guys. Good luck 👍 💓
Thanks for watching!
Great project Kate and Jim! Love how you incorporated a lot of different lapidary techniques. Especially liked the faceting.....im into that lately and learned a lot.
That's awesome! Faceting is not my thing, but Jim sure loves it - I hope you do too!
Wow, so intricate!! Excellent work!!
Thank you so much 😀 Hey, CC, did you get my invite for Heart for Rocks?
OUTSTANDING
Thank you!
Beautiful collab Mr and Mrs Did!.
Thank you. :) Glad you enjoyed it!
Love that faceting machine, great project!
Thank you!
Nice job! Love all of the treasure state stones!
Thanks!
Well that was fun!
:) I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Its amazing how skillful your husbans is !
You are such a good team 😊
He has only been faceting for a short time, but he's very intense about learning.
So creative ! Such an unusual design for a heart pendant !
It was kind of an experiment, but I definitely learned a lot!
Old disabled house bound dusty rusty rockhound here: Maker's Challenge Week!!!
BRING IT ON!!!!🎉🎉🎉
Yay Kelly!
@@KatyDidRocks I got my popcorn 🍿 ready... let's go! Good luck "@KatDidRocks"!!!!
Love faceting...don't have all the machines, I have done 2 faceting patterns. Find a good rock club and take a class. Learning is fun. Collaborating with Mr Did...aka Jim...a winner!!!
Patricia, we live about two hours from the nearest rock club - but Jim has used the Internet to its best advantage, and has lots of support.
Nice challenge !
Thank you 🤗
Nice piece 😊
Glad you like it!
Facetnating! As a fellow math nerd, I found Mr. Did's part really interesting. I have to avoid watching more of that sort of thing or I'll be in the market for a new tool. The whole thing turned out really nice. I love how you used only Montana material. I feel the same way about using Michigan material in a lot of my creations.
Thanks, Rob! LOL, I think that it takes a very special kind of person to facet - I bet you'd love it!
@@KatyDidRocks Resist, resist, resist!
❤😊
:)
I know my opinion isn't popular, but personally, I love inclusions! Makes a piece sooo much more interesting! Anyhoo, thanks for sharing your rockin adventures and this piece for the makers challenge!
Yeah, Jim is a bit of a purist in that regard, I think. :)
That was a good couple's project! Well done!
When is Jim going to start his own faceting TH-cam channel?
Thanks, Jared. I have suggested a channel to Jim, but he thinks it would be too much work. He's not wrong. :D
Katie, you and Mr Did were talking about the inclusions in the stone he's faceting and said😮 it's not worth making jewelry?? But I'd rather have the interesting inclusions making it more beautiful with an inner sparkle than something absolutely clear
He’s a purist. One of the purposes of faceting is that the facets bounce light around the interior of the stone, causing it to sparkle internally. Inclusions keep the light from bouncing around - so while it might be gorgeous in a cabochon, it kinda defeats the point of faceting. At least, that what he tells me. 😊
wow, loved it
Thank you!
