How I adore all Ries' concertos 3 thru 7, but this one is the peak!! One of the most beautiful piano concertos ever!!! And contrary to some other remarks here I never would say that some passages are overextended. What a joy this releases in me !!!
Thank you very much for uploading this video series. Piano Concerto No. 8 in A-flat major, Op. 151. Composed in 1826. Published in 1827. Am I the only one who thinks that Riess was one of the composers who had a great influence on Hummel and Chopin? A comment from an unknown composer from Okinawa JAPAN.
A fantastic composition. A genius and an incredible talent to produce this. It's definitely a mood shifter which I need during relentless editing sessions of my Novels.
Bloody fantastic music! Thanks so much for posting! If only more people could know the magic of Ries’ music. Would it be possible for you to do a video of his Seventh symphony?
I agree- I've now listened to four of Ries' 8 piano concertos, and i'm invariably reminded of Mendelssohn's piano writing (I imagine the influence really ran the othe way of course), but the structure/harmonic palette is very similar to Beethoven, particularly the use of third relationships. If I had a criticism to level, it would be that the ideas are perhaps a bit overextended. As a theory teacher of mine remarked, "He certainly got his mileage out of his ideas." That architectural argument aside, All Ries I've heard was quite fine and greatly deserving of more airtime and performance than it presently gets.
@@monteverdi1567 Also my idea. The Ries concertos are to long for their real content. The few themes are connected by long stretches of passagework that would be interchangeable between the different concertos. Sth that wouldn't be possible in for instance Van Beethoven s 5 concertos.
Was Ries friends with Czerny? Also, this concerto is from 1826, Chopin’s 1st is from 1830 if I am not mistaken. There are subtle and not so subtle similarities. In my opinion Ries was a superb composer however the themes he uses are not memorable. Thank you for posting.
He was the beloved pupil and friend of Beethoven w ho was student of Rias'father. His concertos are based on Beethoven models and style. The originality of the melo d ies is s ome w here poor. Enjoyable music t e chnic a lly correct but if it seems to sound like Beethoven is very far from his great master's work
LOL it has to be equal to Beethoven? Man, I would have to discard big chunk of my channel. As a matter of fact if you read Beethoven's letter you see how much he appreciated and admired Ries. He had few friends like him.
"Seems not to have a very good sense of how musical phrases go together." Since you know how phrases go together you should write couple of concertos LOL 😂

The score is not available.
Thank you for posting this concerto. I enjoyed following the score.
On reflection, Mendelssohn came to mind.

Бетховен,Рис,Черни,Гуммель ученики И.Г.Альбрехтсбергера(1735-1809) австрийский композитор,муз.теоретик,педагог
It reminds me of Rachmaninoff’s piano concertos.
I understand this comment. The interaction piano/orchestra is far ahead of Ries' time and is better than V Beethovens' concerto's
very much like beethoven!

Not really equal to Beethoven. Seems not to have a very good sense of how musical phrases go together. Rightly not well known.

not even beethoven would agree with this nonsense...ha
