    You don't need to empty the pellets weekly. Daily you remove solid waste, stir it up as you did with the crystal help the broken down pellets absorb both liquid waste & smell. Weekly you sift it, throw out or compost the saw dust & top up the pellets. Very cool demonstration. I had no idea there were so many types!

    Hey we switched to pine pellets and we LOVE them! I wanted to let you know how to use them so you could maybe update your video....they need a litter box with a built in grill/sieve. Every maybe 2 or 3 days we shake the sieve and the sawdust goes to the bottom and we dump it (It's good for compost of non edible plants). It's so perfect, if the sieve sits high enough off the bottom of the litter the cats movements and scratching actually make it self cleaning! It's the BEST! I never thought I'd get to stop scooping pees! With the poos they don't mark or stick to the pellets. We just pick them up and flush them, the pine is also flushable and septic safe if we're too lazy to shake it off completely. Also there's literally zero urine smell period with this litter. Zero. I switched to it from Tidycats and I love the fact that it makes the bathroom smell fresh because we associate pine with cleaners :D. It's HUGELY successful in my house. We LOVE it!

      @@kiitzcat I actually use the pellet bedding for horses, and small pets. Its just like the feline pine but it's much cheaper. You can get a 40lb bag for around $6 at Tractor Supply or other farm supply stores. For smells, the pine smell seems to over power it, and the absorption of the pellets dries out the poop very quickly so we hardly notice a smell unless it a VERY fresh poop. We scoop daily.

    Great video! Very nice, informative presentation!
    I have a tip for the non-clomping ones, use a spoon without holes in it and you can crab at least some of the urine.
    And for pellets you can scoop the top layer to the side (and save the clean), to reach the urine under :)

    Thank you for all the information. I think we're gonna gradually switch to crystals or the 50/50 blend version. The regular litter is not enough to keep the odor away even though it forms good clumps.

  • @brassardnicko
    @brassardnicko 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    At first I thought it may be a bit of an exageration to try all thoses types, but I really appreciated your video, you can really understand the difference.
    On a side note, I think the real issue with the sea otters is actually the fact that the sewage is dumped BACK into the ocean... Sewage is sewage no matter what is in it. Officials will always have a way to turn the problem to something else...

  • @BoopSnoot
    @BoopSnoot 11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You don't have to mix old and new litters, and many litters don't work at clumping if you mix them.
    What you can do is simply leave the old litterbox next to your new litterbox with the new litter right next to it. Cats can then check it out and use it when they feel comfortable with it. Once they've used it, you can throw away the old litter.
    Everyone should have more than one litterbox anyway.

  • @boojank

    I love Feline Pine. As long as my cat never has an issue with it I will never switch to a different type of litter. I do know I will never use a clay litter. I prefer more eco friendly options. This was a great video for any kitten/cat owners interested in what litter options they have.

    BTW, one that was not reviewed here if you want a natural biodegradable and flushable clumping litter is Blue Walnut multicat litter.
    It takes a while to clump (longer than most) but the clumps are rock hard. Its not food, no cat would eat it.. nor insect, nor mice.
    Its the same color as poo though, so makes finding that hard, and white cats will have noticeable dark powder on their feet until they groom themselves.
    Otherwise it works great. Like most natural litters, odor absorption is good

    I've used Feline Pine (the wood pellets), the crystal silica gel, and normal clay clumping litter. So far my favorite has to be Feline Pine; I love the smell of it and the lighter impact it has on the environment. The gel and clay aren't as eco-friendly.

    • @CynthiaAvishegnath-watch
      @CynthiaAvishegnath-watch 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm hoping someone could explain to me why clay is not eco-friendly. I simply use the litter as fertilizer under a peach tree. It's just "clay". If I let my cat out, she would be fertilizing some plant life somewhere.

    • @Hermititis

      @@CynthiaAvishegnath-watch , I've heard the reasons clay and silica based litters aren't considered as ecologically friendly is that they have to be strip mined, which can create erosion and wildlife displacement issues. Of course, the same could be said of the areas clearing for farming trees or grains, so make of that what you will.

  • @BoopSnoot

    I have used World's Best Cat Litter with both of my cats without issue. What you have to watch out for on some of these natural litters is that they are high in protein, and if you schedule feed and your cats are very hungry some may nibble on some of the litter. This is particularly a problem with kittens.
    And of course this can make them very sick. Also natural litters HAVE TO BE IN CLIMATE CONTROLLED conditions. If humidity is very high, it can develop aflatoxin and make your cat sick.

    This video is excellent, definatly covered the most commonly used alternative kitters. I am not a fan of the clilica (spl?) litters as I figure if it's not safe to eat my cats shouldn't be peeing in it then licking their paws. I use yesterday's news and Feline Pine as I also keep birds and they cannot be around a lot of dust. I don't use the pine near my birds at all just because of the oils that may be left over, although it is klin dried. Took me a long time to find something that worked!

    I used that Swheat litter in place of sand on some ice in a pinch so my dad wouldn't fall when he got home. The next day I saw a rabbit eating it. I looked it up and I read that it can cause fatal blockages or something. I ran out and barked at the rabbit and then scooped up as much as I could. Other than that I like that kind. It has been getting all over though & I got sick of seeing gold pebbles everywhere & cat got roundworm. Am trying Precious cat silica type now with an enclosed box.

      If your cats like and are used to World's Best, then it's worth trying a poultry feed product commonly known as "chick crumb" (this is the name in the UK ... not sure what it's called elsewhere). It's used to feed day-old to 8-week-old chicks. A very experienced Norwegian Forest Cat breeder put me onto this ... it's pretty much identical to WB - certainly works the same - but far, FAR less expensive, especially if you buy it from a farm supplies shop in 20kg bags. The brand I've tried is Bearts.

    And never use garden dirt for litter. It will make a god awful mess, you have risks of toxoplasmosis in the soil and critters and more introduced to the home, and it will have zero odor control.
    Also, you can get wood stove pellets cheap at Home Depot or Lowes, I don't know why you need to buy ones with a cat face on them for twice the price. Its the same thing.

  • @BoopSnoot
    @BoopSnoot 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    1) Any wheat or corn based litter needs to be in a humidity controlled environment. If you have a very moist basement or put this in the garage with high humidity, it can grow a mold that produces alfatoxin.
    2) There are people that never empty their litter, and just add more as it gradually is used up. This is wrong, it should be replaced monthly.
    3) If you have very hungry non-picky cats or kittens, they may eat the litter and get sick.
    I've used Swheat and WBCL for years, no issues.

    Do you recommend one for a 14 year old cat that has resorted to going #2 on the carpet daily? He uses the box religiously for #1 and we have tried all sorts of litter. Currently we are using Cat Attract for Kittens because it has been the only one he has been interested to using sometimes for #2. We've tried a second litter box and no interest as well. Our son is 2 1/2 and it started happening when I was pregnant. We know it is behavioral and not medical. I am hoping for a miracle because I am at the end of my rope with this cat.

    Technically silica aka silicon dioxide absorbs the most water. Also, if you separate the poop from the used pearls you can throw them in a large plastic storage container (outside). Then after you've gone through 10-12 bags, start a charcoal fire outside, throw the pearls in and let all the piss cook out. Then you can reuse the crystals if you want. You can also wash them with water before you cook them so they're clear again. FTR I do not have a cat. I use the pearls for storing food. : P

We don't even have to scoop pees anymore we just shake the box every other day and empty it once a week or a few times (our sieve isn't very high so we empty every 3 days but we're looking for solutions to this). No pee smell ever :D. And no mixing it in which my cat would legit keel over from ha ha.

    I do not like all these chemicals,and perfumes,being put in the litters its not good for them why pay high cost for dangerous chemicals,that can cause uti in cats and allergies,in my opinion the more natural the better people need to just keep there litter clean to keep smell down also crystals are not to good either people just need to think when they go to the bathroom do they want to clean there srlfs with dangerous chemicals

    I'm afraid you are being very rude to the lady who took the time to educate us as to what litter we should use by commenting that she needs TOO (sic) buy in a $5 tripod so you don't get motion sickness. Know what? You are sick already. Bottom line is --if you don't want to make yourself even sicker, get off the computer or close your eyes real tight! Better yet, why don't you get your butt over to Amazon and buy the tripod for her instead of being so offensive. Get a book on manners too.

    Silica and clay litters are incredibly dangerous for pets. Wood based, paper based, walnut based are much healthier. Don't use wheat based or corn based if your pets are sensitive to grain! I know your thinking well they don't eat it. Dogs do sometimes and cats ingest it when grooming. Clay and silica will absorb moisture from the animals and some have died when it became brick like in their tummies. Please do for your pet... you don't have to like it but the pets deserve to be treated better

      clay not only can clog cats intestines but its also cancer causing when consumed. cats lick their paws and backside after using the litter and eat the litter indirectly. like all tumours and cancers not all cats will get them but that doesnt mean the litter isnt dangerous. there are plenty of smokers who dont suffer from any respiratory issues or die from lung cancer, that doesnt mean smoking is dangerous.

      *****
      name five smokers who have lung cancer right now. i know a lot of smokers and i dont know any one personally who has lung cancer. that doesnt mean smoking wont give you lung cancer.
      there are millions and millions of cats 5 being sick isnt going to prove anything. instead of asking a person who's done the research why dont you? it has happened to thousands of cats and litter clay IS cancerous if eaten and cats lick their paws daily eating the litter.

      In a way I guess it could be said that we know more now than we did back then... kind of the way it has been said about smoking... I grew up with smokers and the only problem that resulted in was being a smoker. For a long time there were just clay litters and many many cats did just fine. if a cat has sensitivity to a clumping clay litter or is predisposed to uti's then clay litter just isn't right for them.

    The best is to use NO LITTER or CAT BOX at all. to train your cat to pee and poo in the toilet. :-)
