  • Cat owners have often asked how much food should they feed their cat. Pet-Care Advisor, Valerie discusses how this is not a question that has one simple answer for every cat or every food. Different cats may have different caloric needs and each food offers feeding guidelines which can vary a great deal.
    Valerie offers some tips on how to establish how much your cat should be fed and also, should you feed dry food or canned food or both.

      I’ve asked my Vet several times during the last few visits and she never really tells me a straight answer. All she responds with is: “Ohh just reduce what you’re feeding your cat by 10%, her weight is fine.” Meanwhile my cat has a gut and she’s only 14 months old!

      @@gorgeouss79 Here on the isle of Crete where wild cats thrive in city and country, we've adopted (that is, feed daily) 10 of them. We go by The Mouse Rule, meaning how much wet, dry, kibble and/or scraps equals their eating 2-3 wild mice per day (plus insects etc.), which is plenty. If they get mostly protein and a little fat they're fine, and no thin or overweight ones in the bunch! Goat's milk is a treat and their favorite is cheap chicken livers broiled with plain water added for gravy.

      Check for worms....I had two kittens from a shelter and they never got over feeling starved to death.. because they had worms, which ate all the food coming in to them. Also, grain free will help as it is similar to humans in that it is a belly full feeling, but nutrition is missing, so nott usually satisfied with a high carb diet. They are carnivores...need pure meat product, no by-product, corn, rice, blueberries, etc.

      Unlike dogs, cats USUALLY do not over eat. Stray cats have had to try and survive by finding food and sometimes not successful. We have taken in 4 ear tips this past year and they too were SO hungry at feed times. Now that they are safe indoors only, they can trust they will have food available and can relax. Don't rely on the can. Rely on what your cat tells you. You can always cover and refrigerate the uneaten portion.

      Me too, I can't find a direct answer anywhere.
      I swear, I don't think anybody knows.
      When I spent $13 for 12 tiny cans of cat food, that would last him 4 days, that's where I drew the line.
      I make Theo's food now;
      It's boiled chicken quarters with pumpkin, green beans, rice and 2 whole eggs, mostly chicken tho, almost all chicken.
      You don't have to add the taurine because it's dark meat and it's loaded with taurine.
      Then I figure up the calories and give him 300 calories a day.
      I just divide it up so he has the main meals at breakfast and supper and what's left is a snack at night before bed.
      That way he gets his 300 calories a day.
      If anybody wants the recipe let me know and I'll send it to you, it's as simple as pie and it's so cheap, and not hard to do.
      Four chicken leg quarters will make 2 to 3 lb of food which lasts him about 20 days for $4.
      You can't beat that with a stick, I don't care who you are.
      That's the best I can do. It's just about put me in the madhouse worrying about it.
      God bless all here and good luck!

    • @twntythofsx
      @twntythofsx 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Not really, 2 meals for an adult cat are more than enough. You still have to follow the instructions on the packaging for the appropriate weight.

    • @twntythofsx
      @twntythofsx 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @Anon Ymous There are no behavior problems. I have 6 rescue cats that eat twice a day. They're not interested in food if I feed them midday. If they do decide to eat, they eat out of boredom and get fat. Way more important than meal frequency is an adequate daily caloric need of quality food.

    • @twntythofsx
      @twntythofsx 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Anon Ymous What cat metabolism? You mean "cat digestive system" which is short and passes food at a faster pace than the human tract and also the fact that they have a smaller stomach. That's why they eat more meals as feral cats, agreed Also because their prey is really small. There's a consensus(among vets and researchers) that feeding two times a day is perfectly healthy for them with no adverse effects. If you believe otherwise, I'm afraid you're wrong. If you work from home or have no job at all, yes, you can feed them 3 times a day. That's hardly the case with people that have to go to work. In multi-cat households, some cats will not have the same appetite as the others and, consequently, won't eat those 3 meals. Instead, that food will be eaten by cats with a bigger appetite. They'll eventually get fatter. A feeder is also out of the question because some cats might eat and others, again, will be left aside.

    • @twntythofsx
      @twntythofsx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Anon Ymous Not ideal in terms of what? Health? That's simply not true. Cats are animals of habit so if they get used to a schedule they have no issues in going by it. Since they eat bigger meals compared to feral cats that eat smaller meals, also means they're not as hungry in between. I don't wanna look like someone that has an argument for everything but you're not arguing based on research, that's all.

    I must say that this video is quite confusing and difficult to follow. It even has some times where it gets contradictor. I can see the effort put in here to make this video, but it seems like it was not the best video to try to teach the average cat owner on how to feed and portion their meals. From the looks of the examples on the table, it seems that the portions of food are a bit too much for a single cat. The cat, Dexter, in this video seems to be a bit overweight. The longer hair of Dexter makes it more difficult to see body condition, but he seems to be a bit larger and rounder than she should be. Dexter is not terribly overweight, but he could stand to lose a few pounds. This individual believes that eight pounds is small for a cat? That is actually standard size for most cats, and she even said so which goes back to the contradicting I was talking about. The size of the cat in the video is one indication that overfeeding might be going on here which would make this not the best video to be watching to try and learn how and how much to feed a cat. So while I am here, I am going to try and simplify things for people. So here is my advice on how much to feed cats.
    While measuring is important, feeding is not an exact science. Things such as activity level, size, age, and body condition matter more than precise measurements and calories. As long as people are not feeding their cats too much or too little, that is fine. How can you tell if you are not feeding cats the right amount? Well, the body weight of the cat (whether or not he or she is overweight or too thin) as well as whether or not he or she is eating all of their food in the same day. So if people are feeding cats too little, they could have cats whose ribs, backbone, and hips are starting to be visible. Feeding cats too much could result in them being overweight, slower, and having less energy or they do not eat all of their food that day which results in food staying in the bowl throughout that day and until the next day when their owner wakes up and looks into the bowl to find food still in there. Also, something I forget to mention was that while cats are designed to process water from their food better and may not drink as much water as dogs, they do drink when they are thirsty and when water is available. Clean water should be available to them at all times no matter if someone is feeding dry food or moist food like table scraps or canned cat food. Also, a compromise to people who are not sure whether to feed canned or dry could feed both. Since canned is less cost effective and some people say that dry food is better for teeth, canned food can be given twice a week or on occasions. Another idea is to simply add liquid to the cat's dry food from time to time. Maybe something like chicken broth. I hope this helps.

      then u have someone like me who has three cats, and feeds a rotational diet so they don't get addicted to one protein....I also buy top and and bottom end cat food and mix it 95/5 good food to bad food ratio so they get an occasional treat while eating....all three of my cats are 8 pounds, 12 pounds, and 10 pounds....the 8 and 12 pounders are brother and sister and domestic shorthair breed, 10 pounder is a black tabby

    • @Delightful_Addition
      @Delightful_Addition 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      VapeTime The rotation feeding seems like a more natural and appropriate method of feeding cats and dogs. I am impressed to hear someone using that method. I too believe that pets should not simply eat the same thing over and over, even if they do like it and become accustomed to that particular food. In nature, such species as canines and felines eat a variety of different things from rabbit, mice, deer, fish, beef, and even the occasional plants and fruits. However, I would recommend a less frequent and more controlled rotation when feeding pets, especially when feeding commercial foods. I don't know how you rotate, but I would wait until one bag of food is finished before switching to another and I would mix the little remaining from the old bag with the new bag from the top just to make the transition easier for the pets. I would also choose a particular brand or formula of foods and rotate between those only. I would not switch out daily, open two full bags and mix them together, or rotate foods between random brands and formulas. Also, I would only stick with higher end foods. There really is no true benefit to adding lower end foods (foods with filler ingredients such as corn, wheat, and soy that are said to cause food allergies in some dogs and cats) to higher end foods. Not even for taste, which I would imagine that pets like the taste of higher end foods with the meat and ingredients they thrive on over foods that do not contain what they like or need.

    My family would feed our cats 1 to 2 cans a day. The last 10 years was a meow mix wet container or sometimes I'll get fancy feast. They LOVE that stuff!
    And we'd put a bowl of dry all day. And a bowl of fresh clean water. They were also pretty active. Never had a problem with over feeding, obesity, or health issues from feeding. The only time they got sick was when we had them fixed and they got Upper respiratory infection from other cats at the vet. But this system of feeding worked for them for many years.

    Thanks 4 the imfo, question how would u handle having multiple cats at various ages. We have one in particular a female persian that's about 10 years or so, she's getting a little on the heavy side. With this knowledge we're paying her extra attention. Feeding her different food separately isn't the problem it's how do we stop her from eating with the others aside from separating her every time we feed the others. Advice appreciated.

    mine just eats everything in one go and then demands more so I don't really know what to do. We used to give her two meals of half a bowl per day but then moved onto half a bowl for a day. Gave her a canned meal this morning and she kept nagging for more the whole day. She's very small..
    Should I always have food in her bowl? what if she binge eats? she has that tendency and also eats very fast

    I recently took in a stray off the streets she was malnourished she didn’t have much life left in her I started setting food out so she would be able to eat eventually she just walked inside and we got her checked up at the vet. $650 later and her worms, fleas, ear mites, were gone we got her up to a proper weight, spayed.
    I’m associating her hunger with the malnourishment cause she eats an entire days food at once and is still hungry, looking for ways to teach her to slow eat, I’ve tried bowls that are made to slow eating she just scoops the food out or knocks the bowl over and eats it on the ground. I’ve tried feeding her twice multiple times a day but that ended quick cause I just don’t have the time. And if someone’s got suggestions she likes to pee on stuff I’ve cleaned it up made sure her litter box is clean, removed the lid which seems to be helping, and kept things off the ground, there is another cat they like to play with one another and are never aggressive towards each other.
    She doesn’t have a uti.

      If she was always outside, she was never litter trained then and doesn’t know she supposed to use litter box. Thats my guess. Try to shrink the area she’s in/ move litter box their, and try to encourage her to use that. While discouraging her to spraying elsewhere or peeing elsewhere.. using sprays or something to not want her there

    • @Delightful_Addition

      +monica castro Not necessarily. Every cat is different. Also, while cats are designed to process water from their food better and may not drink as much water as dogs, they do drink when they are thirsty and when water is available. And they do get thirsty. Clean water should be available to them at all times no matter if someone is feeding dry food or moist food like table scraps or canned cat food.

      Flipodahippo And as long as your cat is getting the nutrients and care it needs, has access to clean water at all times, and is showing no signs of illness or distress, it is perfectly fine that cats drink larger sums of water. Though sometimes what we may perceive as a lot may actually not be as much as we think.

    I have a seven month old cat, I think I am overfeeding him because he definitely looks like he has gotten fat in just a month of rescuing him. What is the correct amount to feed? I think I am feeding too much and too frequently. I give breakfast wet cat food mixed with kibble. then I fill up a bowl of dry kibble so he can eat it all day, and then at night I do another half a can of wet cat food mixed with dry food, and then he will wake up at 3 AM and eat some more. LOL. I am feeding a lot because they say kittens need to eat more. What is the correct amount of dry kibble I should get, half a cup? Or less than that. Should I only feed him twice a day?

    We just took our cat to the vet and he said she gain another pound(13 now) and we are trying to figure out what's enough for her to eat. We give her scoops of wet in the morning for Breakfast, then leave dry out for her for the day. Because my husband and I both work and I don't come home until 6.
    But she's been stuffing herself then throwing up at different times. So my question is how much wet should I give her would a 3 oz can be good for her for all those hours and leave very little dry? She needs to lost weight, but she's so use to the free eating.
    I ordered a special bowl for her to control her dry eating so hopeful it would work to help her slim down.

    The portions was the most important part and you never said what it is, do we give then a half of a can or a whole can, the smaller the container the more likely we would give the entire thing to them, and so two or three times a day of can food in small portions, while I leave dry out continually. Just reading the back of a bag, isn't really hands on experience, which is why I listened to this video in the first place, thanks but I think you could have spent a little more time on actual content rather then generality's and bag recommendations.

My vet said normal 10-12 pound cat should eat around 225 calories, but due to the fact they need to loses faster than cats like to 190 calories.... For wet food. The water was suppose to bring them down, they have only lost a few pounds & they are following me every where screaming. This lady said 30 cal per pound that's 360 cal a day. So a bit confused.

    When I bought my house 13 years ago, the [ Ferrell] cat was already there. There were a LOT of cats around the neighborhood. This one just claimed my property as hers.
    She was not a kitten.
    She did become friendly with me, and a couple others.
    [ a neighbor trapped all the cats, had them fixed. (Service was free), and rereleased them.
    CAT , now known as Lady Cat, has slowed down.
    Before, the only times I fed her was when the temperature was freezing. Now that she is slowing down, I started feeding her - one can of cat food, whenever I come home from work.
    [ I have no Vet, and couldn’t afford one anyway.
    I have watched videos on how much to feed, but being she is not a “pet” [ per se ], it’s very hard for me to judge.
    Should I feed her more than just one can per day ❓
    (( and forget about weighing her)).

      I only feed mine their food at night, they get a small amount of dry treats (catnip temptations or greenies) in the morning each and some when I get home from work + a fussy cat or dine tube treat each before or after dinner. This stops the ants from finding the food source. I also use a food mat under the bowls which I clean every morning after I have fed the cats the night before. My cats get fed anytime between 8pm-12pm at night depending on when they were last fed. They get 1 small can (so a sungle serve) or sachet each plus a 1/2 sxoop of dry food mixed in, then another 1/4-1/2 scoop in each bowl after dinner to last overnight.
      They have access to clean water in a seperate large bowl between their individual bowls as well.
      If my cats are fussy ill mix 2 different flavours of the food sachets or cans together to spice it up a bit before adding kibble, keeping in mind thats 1/2 from each can or sachet in each bowl.
      My cats also have an elevated bowl and a non elevated bowl since they tend to push each-other around to get food and are a bit silly sometimes not wanting to use the seperate bowls.

He still wanted more and begs. the cans that I get are not cheap. At Agway its 1.45 a can and at Pet smart is 1.29 a can. So I buy 15 cans and get 3 free. It costs over 20.00 for his food now and don't think this is the right food to satisfy him. Can you give me suggestions. He is 9 years old and was use to Fancy feast wet but didn't eat it all. He sucked out the juice and left the pieces in his bowl. I was ready to throw him out the door. He wakes me up now 5.30 in the am. I don't know what to do. Any advice?

Or Solid Gold (inexpensive) pet food, Nature's Variety Instinct or Soulistic pet food sold at Petco and other local stores. Orijen and instinct makes good dry foods sold in stores or online. My cats love the little pouches of weruva gravy and meat, you can put a little bit on top of his fancy feast or whatever food you feed him. I put it on top of their food, along with a little bit of instinct freeze dried meat or instinct toppers and sometimes Stella and chewy freeze dried meat.

    We don’t free feed our 2 cats, we have a Bengal he weighs about 8 pds. And our Savannah is about 16 pds. They get 1/3 cup of taste of the wild dry 3 times per day between them not each and 2 tbsp’s of wet food each and they maintain a healthy weight and are active. If I went by what the bag and can said, they would be elephants not cats.

    Apologies Valerie, but what is a "pet-care advisor"? I would like to be able to trust your advice with my furball, but what are your credentials? Thank you in advance,

    I have TWO cats and I give them dry food because of the price. I mean I'm not going to spend a huge dollar amount on cat food even though I do love my cats. They're happy with what I give them,and they are also very picky. However with two cats (one being very active,and fairly skinny. and the other being a complete pig,very sednantary and mostly fat. how should I feed them!? if anyone can answer me please do. as far as getting them at a good weight and the times of day to feed them&whatnot.

      feeding only dry foods can cause kidney stones, they need more wet than dry food. My cat died and i didnt find that out until it was too late
