Making a vertical split on our bee hive.

    As much as I love catching swarms, I cringe whenever I catch one that came from one of my hives. When I see a swarm from one of my hives, my very first thought is, " there goes my honey from that box." For honey production, and that's what I'm trying to accomplish, you need lots of bees, and if your bees are flying off, so does your honey.
    Well, to discourage what the bees want to do naturally, I make what's called a vertical split to our hives. The last 2 videos I posted were parts 1 and 2 of the process, and this video, the third one, is the final in the series. On this episode, I will be removing the super and adding supers to both the one that was moved off, as well as the one that remained on the stand. Now for those who may have missed the two earlier episodes, don't fret, I'll include a link to them at the end of this description.
    We have some really good Swarm Capture Challenge entries this week, and one of them shows not only the swarm, but the capture as well. Also, we now have an entrant from the U.K., that's correct, all the way from across the big pond. So, for all who are interested in participating in the fun, just send your swarm catch picture or short video, preferably with your face in it along with the swarm, to oscelata@gmail.com and I will include it on one of my videos. Remember, by submitting your picture, you are giving me permission to post it on my video. Thanks so much to all who have sent photos in already, keep sending them, and I'm looking forward to receiving your photo or video as well. God's peace to all. Mr. Ed

    Hello Beekeeping Friends!
    I am a newer but have learned so much from Jeff n Randy (628 dirt rooster) I live in IL and am hoping to start my 1st box of bees soon.
    Thanks for all you have taught me over the 2 months I have been watching bee videos.

      It is such a joy for me to hear my videos are helping bee keepers, thank you so much for following along and learning. May I suggest, in case you are not in a club, find a bee club in your area and join it. You will learn very important information about keeping bees specific to the area you live in. If I can help with questions, please ask. God's peace Deb.

    Fascinating to learn how mites are managed through splits!
    Thanks for the reply. The last video I saw (before the household woke up Christmas morning!) you spoke about developing naturally mite resistant bees. Put that together with videos of cut outs at different times of the year, sometimes very little brood (and sometimes very little honey stores too) and I see why feral colonies fair so well. Those natural brood break cycles seem divinely programmed to manage parasites, dearths, you name it.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brood breaks, and by making a split you are making a brood break, is the best natural way of breaking the mite cycle, there are no larva for the mite to feed on, or places for the mites to hide, in the bottom of a capped cell. God's peace Willa.

    Hi Mr Ed
    I hope this finds you well and staying safe.
    Keep the videos coming, Just love em, so easy to follow and very informative, Great Job.
    I have a Q for you.
    If i do a split as you have just done but put the new box on the bottom rather than the top will the bees move down and adapt?
    The reason for the Q is. I plan to move the split queen to a hollowed out ash log which i have adapted to take adjusted 12 x 14 frames. By placing the split on top of the adapted log, will the bees adapt and move down? The only entrance will be via the middle of the log, so they will move through the log to get to the top box.
    Putting a package of new bought bees would be easier, but we are advised to keep to our local northern black bees and not buy packages that could have come from anywhere.
    Thank for your time. By the way I live in the north Of the UK.
    Regards
    Chris

    Hi Jeff! At 11:08 you say there's no way that bottom box can swarm because there's no queen laying. Do you mean that in the past two weeks the old queen has been confined in the top box that you moved? And there's a queen cell in the lower box waiting to emerge, causing a 21 day gap of new brood and a minor hit to population numbers? I always have done walk away splits with hives facing different directions which assures me there's at least a few frames of eggs going into the new box to make a queen from.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No queen was introduced, I allow he bees to make emergency cells from which the new queen will emerge. I can also put in swarm cells and have the queen emerge from that. I'm still trying to get my head around a double screen board. I'll likely add that to my 'toolbox'. But I don't understand one claim of the double screen board. That claim is that the double screen prevents the bees from touching and passing on the various pheromones. What is a 'fanning' bee doing? Spreading pheromones?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The double screen does prevent the bees from touching, but the pheromone is shared by both boxes. However, just because the pheromone is shared, the fact that one of the hives is queen less, they will still produce emergency cells to become queen right. The great thing about the sharing of the pheromone is if the queen less hive is unable to produce emergency cells, the board can be removed and the two boxes joined together again without the bees fighting. I hope that helps to give a clearer picture. God's peace Bruce.

    What do you think about moving the Queen and 2 frames of brood out of the top (nuc)and replacing with a frame that had a Queen cell on it?

  • @brucewest4862
    @brucewest4862 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think I've watched all of the vertical split / double screen divider series. I don't recall you looking into the upper box to confirm the queen was, in fact, there. Did I miss something or was the assumption that she would be in the upper box?
    Secondly, which bees will be remaining in the original box that gets moved? Just the queen and some nurse bees?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally, I do not look for the queen in the box I move off. The reason being, 95% of the time that is where she is. The 5%, in my opinion, does not justify my time searching for her, especially when I have another 100 plus hives to go though. The queen and nurse bees are the only bees remaining, the field bees will all return to the original location of the hive. Thanks for watching all those videos. God's peace Bruce.

      AS long as I have over 6 frames of bees in each box, I will add the double dividing board. That is my only criteria, enough bees to make a productive new hive. For us in the deep south, our temps in early March are very moderate, but we do get some cold snaps which is why allowing the bees to share the warmth, is a good idea to use the double screened boards. In early March when I do the splits, we are just about to enter our first major nectar flow. Great questions Malcom, thanks for asking and for watching. Merry Christmas and God's peace brother.

      The name "Mr. Ed" was given to me when I first started working at the Post Office back in March of 1982. When I retired after 27 years, I liked it so much, I continued to call myself that. Then, when I started my TH-cam channel, that's what I decided to call myself. God's peace Dawn.

    Jeff would they still swarm if an additional box were added to the existing colony?

    • @russiane.lection-hacker2057
      @russiane.lection-hacker2057 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Looking forward to Mr. Ed's answer, but meanwhile mine is that once a colony is in swarm mode there's no stopping them. You have 2 options left: either let them swarm, or trick them into believing they've already swarmed (which is what Jeff's doing).

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      All bees have a natural tendency to swarm, it's their means of perpetuation. As a bee keeper, I want to minimize the swarming tendency so I make a split of the hive, in essence replicating the swarm. Bees swarm from natural tendency or by out growing the space they occupy, either by to many bees and not enough room for expansion or simply being honey bound and no more room to lay eggs. So yes, adding an additional box could prevent a swarm, but it does not negate the natural tendency to do so. Thanks for watching.God's peace.
      Mr. Ed

  • @2listening1

    Wow I didn't understand that! When you split a hive, is there a second queen you can put in the new hive? You probably said but I can't find it.

    • @mark-wn5ek
      @mark-wn5ek 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My thoughts exactly. The old queen still in top box, leaving lower box queenless. I thought Jeff said there are no emergency/swarm cells present. I assume the workers will make make a queen from the brood in their box? I'm trying to learn all I can...just getting started. Most of this intimidates me!
      Anyway, hope to see Jeffs clarification. May God bless these....and hopefully my future bees, my swarm boxes are out, waiting for visitors!

      When the DSDB is placed between the hive bodies, the bottom box IS queen less. After 12 days or so, it now has a new, unmated queen running around in it. When this video was made,17 days after the DSDB was placed between the boxes, there was a new queen in the bottom box. I hope that clears things up. God's peace.
