      I'm still making a few new queens to hold in Nuc boxes to support my hives. Like Bob, I'm putting a Nuc on top of a weak colony and pinching the weak or tired queens. One colony that failed to re-queen, I'm packing it with sealed brood from strong colonies (swarm prevention) to boost it up as a mated queen is introduced. I really need to pull some honey because all my equipment is filling up at alarming rates.. I'm working toward getting rid of the problem hives and making them as strong as possible moving forward.

    I've just started keeping notes on lids probably at the end of last year. I tried a notebook, but it was just too convenient to have an excuse to not do it. But......I do want to keep a notebook eventually also. I just need to train myself to keep it with me, like I did with having a marker to write on the lids. As always, thanks for sharing!

    "It can be quite a task to make a large colony to accept a queen" This comment resonated deep deep into my soul. I requeen a couple of hundreds queens every year, either by cell, combining with nuc, caged etc. Small colonies is just a wonderful breeze to accept a queen, and most of the large colonies do not make a huge fuss. But those large colonies who has a stubborn streak in them, they are the absolute bane of my existence.
    The last few years I have moved more and more towards letting the big colonies handle the requeening process themselves and rejuvinate my yards with nucs, replacing/combining those who fail. Less of a headache, and frees up some time that I can dedicate to other parts of beekeeping (like preventing my bees packing their bags and take an extended leave)
    Though with your scale, a streamlined process is the key and thus letting the colonies do whatever they want is probably not efficient nor productive. I'll stick to my humble 500 colonies :) That's enough bees to nail my socks to my ankles for now.
    Thank you for sharing your deep trove of knowledge to us peasants! Have a lovely summer Bob!

      @bobbinnie9872  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment. Many large beekeepers do exactly what you do. Oh by the way I wouldn't call 500 a humble amount. That's about all I could handle when I didn't have help and these days I'm sure I couldn't do it well.👍

    Hello Bob. I don't requeen like I should, because of a number of reasons. The main reason is i don't know of any one. That raises queens seriously anywhere near by and I don't like shipping them. I don't raise my own queens because of my work schedule. Good luck with with the sourwood crop coming up.

    Very instructive video once again Bob. Thanks for the info.
    When introducing a cell to requeen a full-size colony, do you worry about making it queenless for a period of time before adding the cell? I often hear “at least 24 hours”, but my guess is it would be impractical for your operation to have to make a return trip to an out yard. Furthermore, if the cell is in an orange cell protector, that would seem to protect it from being killed and torn down for the first day or so anyway, right?

    • @bobbinnie9872
      @bobbinnie9872  หลายเดือนก่อน

      We usually try to leave a colony or nuc queenless for at least a little while before installing a cell. Sometimes overnight and sometimes late on the same day we made the colony or nuc queenless. If we can't wait we definitely use a cell protector.

    • @bobbinnie9872
      @bobbinnie9872  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The nucs at an angle is to leave an entrance in the boxes near the old one used with the double screen board. Newspaper can be helpful if fighting is a problem. In this case there was a bit of a nectar flow and we also disturbed some capped honey to keep every body busy. Sounds odd but it does help.

One time I had 2 nucs that had laying workers, by the time I got around to shake them out (month or so later)there was a queen laying in there. Like u said though in a mating yard there are queens flying everywhere.

    Hi Bob. Is there a "sweet spot" after "de-queening" a colony when adding a mated queen? Immediately ok? 6/8 hours? (Know S. Tabor and Roberts could pluck a queen and replace immediately if the colony was balanced, but I can't say I could do this comfortably). How about cells? Are cells introduced in a protector? Looking to gain any advantage when introducing a new queen (I know you mentioned feeding will help).
    The clarity of your video was remarkable...new lens?
    Hope you are well

    • @bobbinnie9872
      @bobbinnie9872  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Tim. I'm guessing a bit here but I think the sweet spot is between 6 and 8 hours. We do use protectors but we use them as much for handling as anything else. Of course I think they help if the cell isn't going to hatch right away or the nuc hasn't already been queenless for a while. Same lens, maybe it was clean this time. I'm going to do an experiment with the Tabor thing someday.

    Hey Bob-do you requeen every year just for vigor? Also, how much time prior to requeen if would one remove an old queen? Grateful.

    • @bobbinnie9872
      @bobbinnie9872  ปีที่แล้ว

      I could have added this to the video but it's basically more vigor for better and more consistent production, better overwintering and better colonies in the spring and beyond.

      In warm weather we put one teaspoon of bleach per gallon which gives you a little extra time. We also only make it up as we need it.

      A good question that I get asked to which I haven't shown in a video yet. There are several ways. I will make sure and show that soon.

    Bob, i notice that you and crew dont use much smoke, couple of puffs and done. Ever have the honey taste smoked? Think that open cell honey is more susceptible to picking-up a smoked flavor over capped honey?

    • @bobbinnie9872
      @bobbinnie9872  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's true that heavy smoking can influence the taste of the honey and yes uncapped is more susceptible. Removing bees from honey supers with a smoker for instance can definitely have an affect.
