    There are always surprises when it comes to wrangling bees, but this surprise really caught me off guard. I knew this hive was going to be a large one, but I had no idea it was going to bee as large as it turned out. Not only was the hive massive, the queen played hide and seek with me for over 3 hours. In the end, we removed 2 ice chests of comb, which I have already rendered and plan on announcing a surprise concerning it, more than 60 pounds of capped honey, 15,000 plus bees, and an extremely large butted queen, thank you Jesus!
    Also, I spend time explaining the particulars of my bee vac. I am always asked questions concerning the bee vac that I use, and I used this cut out to explain and demonstrate the vac in action. For those who are interested in learning a bit more about the bee vac, I will include a link to the video I made showing how to build one for yourself.
    Because this video ran so long, I did not include any swarm catches this time, and since our swarm season is about wrapping up, I will be concluding the catches within the next 2 videos. More than 20 folks have send in their catches, so I will probable break it up over the next 2 weeks. Thanks to all who have sent in their pictures, it was really great to see all the action. God's peace to all. Mr. Ed

    Great video. I have ZERO interest in keeping bees and I don't even eat honey but your videos are very entertaining. And I don't think I'm nearly as frightened of bees as I used to be. God's peace, brother!

    Jeff, if I had to rate your videos, this is one of the BEST. Your explanation of the vac is so helpful and answered so many questions. I'm going to build another vac and wil incorporate some of your ideas.
    Of course, the removal was fantastic. I look forward to your excitement when the queen is found and caught. Can't wait for the other two removals go in the shed.
    Keep them coming. 😎🐝🐝🐝

    Why would anyone ask about whether the vac was hurting the bees. Anyone who watched any of your videos know you are a master bee keeper. Why would you do something that would kill the bees when you want to get them to keep? Anyway excellent video. God bless you.

    The fundamental principle is managing velocity through managing area. The box and screen have a large area and hence slow airflow while the hose has a much smaller area and hence a much faster airflow.

      So glad you have discovered my channel Joe and enjoy the content. I'm looking forward to hearing from you again and answering your questions. Just wanted to let you know, besides being a bee keeper, I am also a woodworker and volunteer in a casket building operation at St. Joseph Abbey in Covington, La. One of the great things about working there is we have 2 CNC's that do all our material cutting. The shop is a very modern one, and we just added another 4,000 feet to it to accommodate the addition of another species of wood, mahogany, to our line of caskets. The link below is for a video I made showing the 6 largest removals I did last year, I think you may enjoy watching. Until the next time. God's peace brother.

    Thanks for the detailed explanation of your bee vac. I built one some time ago and have used it a few times. I need to add the rubber sealing material to mine. I have been using blue painters tape.
    One thing I struggle with I how much vacuum to bleed off so I don’t harm the bees traveling through the corrugated hose. Sometime when you are setting up your unit, please show us how much suction you use by putting your hand over the end of the hose and slowly pulling it away. That is the only way I can think of to get an idea of the amount of suction being created by the unit I have.
    Thanks for another great video.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It’s a good video, and a good explanation of the vacuum. I’m not knowledgeable enough to know about the actual act of vacuuming, and you didn’t do that on camera, so I’ll have to guess about how that works. Thank you. I like learning about beekeeping. Seeing the vacuum in action might be a good sequel.

    7:37 There's no pressure inside here.
    9:48 pressure holds box together.
    Does not compute!
    Thanks for the fascinating video, I've been curious about the vac for a while.

    • @martyking6942
      @martyking6942 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I noticed that the gate at the bottom of the bee vac was closed when he turned the vacuum on. The strap across the top of the box is a real good idea when that gate is open.

    • @adam.millerchip
      @adam.millerchip 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@martyking6942 good point. I think even with the gate open is actually a constant pressure (otherwise there would be no suction from the tube), but because the area in the box is much wider than the tube, the air inside is much calmer. Similar to a lake with a river flowing into and out of it.

    • @martyking6942
      @martyking6942 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@adam.millerchip you are correct. Once the bees reach the inside of the box the air expands out rapidly and the vacuum is decreased slowing the rush of the air toward the motor.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The pressure is all in the hose, once the bees are "dumped" into the box, it is as if it were dead air inside of the box. God's peace. Mr. Ed

      I usually do vacuum the queen if I do not find her as was the case in this video. As long as the queen goes with the bees, it's a pretty good bet the hive can survive the ordeal. The link below is on how I built my bee vac. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

    Very informative Mr.Ed.
    You tried to explain it toward the end of video, but I’m still a bit confused. What if the main box of the bee-vac was just a regular one of your super boxes. This way, you wouldn’t have to transfer the bees out of the bee-vac, just swap out the main box for another empty.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is only one screen, and it's to keep the bees separated from the vacuum head. It is the same screen that is removed to allow the bees to crawl onto the comb when the bees are released. Thanks for watching. God's peace David.

    I was thinking that the screen piece could be perfected more, instead of sliding the mesh sheet, keep it fixed in place, make an little aperture on it and close it with a sliding piece of aluminium/steel sheet. I think that way it would be easier to handle
