Jeff I use a lot of boards and learned from a guy who uses 1k boards. Mainly in the fall. I was taught to keep the board entrance on the same side as the main entrance. When you pull the top box you don’t have bees trying to get into the back of the box. The top bees just end up going to the bottom entrance without a lot of fuss.
Sounds like a good idea to me. I was taught to reverse the entrances, it made sense then, and still does now......as long as I remember to pull the shim. Thanks for watching. God's peace Justin. Mr. Ed

Brother Jeff, I wish you a blessed Passover, I'm a Christian that doesn't celebrate Easter.....but praise the Lord for the blessed Lamb of God, Jesus, whose shed blood is our Passover sacrifice. Great split video....did mine yesterday. First grafts made beautiful cells....I err on the side of caution, gave split deeps and nucs 2 cells each.....like you said, let the bees work that out. At least I know there's two opportunities for a good queen to emerge. I made my splits strong, nucs heavy with bees...probably could have made several thinner nucs...but these should build quickly when the new queens get established. As Jesus would say, Peace be unto you. He is risen and sits at the right hand of the Father, making intercession for us....Thank You Jesus!
So glad you enjoyed the video, it's always fun sharing what I do. Thanks for watching and for your Easter blessing, and I hope you and yours have a joyous Easter as well. Stay safe, God's peace Mary. Mr. Ed
Minor observation, what works best for me is to place the external frame holder on the side opposite of where I remove the frames. If the external frames are on the same side as the remaining frames the hive becomes much more easily tipped over.

Dear Brother Jeff, Thank you for your reply message , I am very interesting in beekeeper work . your youtube channel also I get more information. i am Christian preacher . i from Nepal . maybe it possible to visit Nepal after some time. You may already have a place in your heart for your bees, but this doesn’t automatically translate into desirable accommodation. Whatever your species, the same three golden rules for choosing your ideal home seem to apply-location, location, location-so where you plan to put your hive is crucial for both you and your bees. Whilst we humans may prioritize easily accessible supermarkets, farmers markets, or organic whole-food temples, all the bees require is nearby flowers that we haven’t made poisonous. Not an unreasonably high expectation to have of your neighbors, but one we disappoint all too frequently. And though even the wildflowers that grow in the margins of industrial agriculture are often tainted by the overspray of pesticides harmful to bees, all is not gloom: in towns and cities millions of gardeners deliberately plant for blossoms from March to November. From window boxes to public parks, we’ve intervened to generate the sight and smell of beautiful flowers that profoundly gladden our hearts.
Thank you very much for your blessing and very kind words Zeke. I am delighted to hear you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching. Stay safe, God's peace. Mr. Ed
Hello MR ED, thank you Jeff very interesting and informative video, I’m really happy I have UTUBE so I can learn so much stuff from all of you experienced beekeepers, Jeff can you tell me please what breed of bee do you find easier and more productive to have I started with Italian type bees but I’m hearing from a pot of good beekeepers over here in the UK that they like to have the Buckfast bees plus if I may ask another question what do you think of the polystyrene hives I’ve never tried them and I don’t know any off my other beekeeping friends that have had them either ! Well thank you Jeff for sharing your expertise and posting your excellent videos for all of us , Stay safe and god bless my friend.
Hello Peter, I will tell you my opinion on what a good breed of bees is, it's the ones that you pull out of someones house. With all the different species of bees to select from, really, how is a guy to know that's the one for me? For that reason, the single most important trait in a bee that I look for is survivability, can the bees withstand whatever Mother Nature throws at them without me doing anything with them. In other words, without treatments or feeding. Are Buckfast bees good, yes, heck I'd like a few of those. What about Russians, Italians, Cornies, and on and on, they are all good, but what's going to do the best for you is something you will have to work out for yourself. Personally, I don't mind doing the work taking bees from structures and tending them, I don't pay money for them and if they perish, I'll go get more. Eventually, I'll get the bees to stick and they will develop their own species due to the intermingling of the hives. I am now in the 4th year of working under that auspice, and can see already a certain degree of success as witnessed by the bees in this video. As far as poly hives go, I understand that they are pretty common in the UK and due to the weather conditions there, they maintain heat very well. Personally, I do not have experience with them however. I'm sorry I could not be more help for you, but with a lot of things in life, we have to take circumstances and make them fit our way of living. If you can do that, you will find contentment with your choices. Thank you for your blessing, and stay safe yourself. God's peace brother.. Mr. Ed
Jeff Horchoff Bees Thank you Jeff for your reply very much appreciated, I’m now in my second year beekeeping and yes I’m still a newbie and yours and other beekeepers videos give me inspiration and a lot of great information I so need , I don’t think I could do a cut out plus I honestly don’t think anyone would allow me :) but I am going to attempt some swarm boxes. Thank you Jeff watching you and other experienced beekeepers gives me a whole lot of inspiration stay safe and god bless MR ED .
I can see how much you love them. It definitely shows through you. 😊 They are truly beautiful, especially the queens. Such beauty they can be. And thank you, you stay safe too.
I've already gotten it caught in the zipper several times. Soon, it will be gone and I won't have that problem andy more.Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching. Stay safe, God's peace. Mr. Ed
Jeff I do something similar to you, but I have found over he years that if you specifically select only a couple frames with eggs and then use OTS method the queen cells developed are a much higher quality. Like I said I raise many of my queens using a double screen, and sometimes depending how many notches I make On natural comb I can harvest a dozen nice queen cells. Just a thought.
Bees are beautyful I love them Now I have like 5 of these bee boxes in my garden and I love them I named them all Barry Benson inspired from the Bee Movie Keep It Up Man!🐝🐝🐝
you spoke of the bees getting between the two screens. run a bead of wood glue around the edge of the screen, then use your finger to flatten the glue into the screen. let it dry over night, flip and repeat. it will seal the edge so the bees can't get inbetween.
That is another very good suggestion as to stop the bees from getting between the screens. Thanks for your help and for watching. Stay safe, God's peace Jim. Mr. Ed
Would you ever use the double dividing board to introduce a purchased queen in the hive that is queen-less (as a result of using the dividing board)? If so, would you follow the procedure of moving the upper hive and allowing the hives in the moved hive to return to the original location?
I would not use the DDB to introduce a purchased queen. The DDB forces the queen less hive to produce queen cells. Thanks for watching. God's peace Bruce. Mr. Ed
@@JeffHorchoff I want to do a split and at the same time mimic a swarm with the old queen. I thought I might be able to use your technique of moving the old queen (and the box she's in) but leaving a back entrance in the new queen's box to force some of the foragers from the old queen's box to come back. I haven't been able to find a video online that covers that scenario. Do you have a video dealing with that?
Hi Jeff Peter from Australia , what time of the year do you put the dividing board on, and is there a video of making the dividing board , good video explained a lot thanks .
For us living in Louisiana, I use the approximate date of March 15th as when I insert the boards. In general terms, sometime during the early Spring. The link below is a recent video I made on building the boards. Stay safe, God's peace Peter. Mr. Ed th-cam.com/video/JcAlBIDVJbk/w-d-xo.html
Hi Jeff How does the queen or even the bees know which are drone, queen and regular eggs.? Is that just by instinct or is there some pheramones that the brood eggs emit that make that distinction possible? Also are your boxes painted different color for any paticular reason. Some are white, pink, a,few yellow etc?
Almost all the eggs that the queen lays will develop into a bee, a drone, a worker, or a queen. If it's a drone bee the queen will lay an egg that is not fertilized. If she lays a fertilized egg it will become a worker, and if a worker egg is fed royal jelly, it becomes a queen. AS far as the paint goes, it just looks prettier with different colors. Thanks for watching. Stay safe, God's peace Douglas. Mr. Ed
Do you think it is possible that bees will sometimes move an egg to a location where they have built a queen cell? Somewhere I have a picture of a lone queen cell on bare plastic foundation.
I just looked at that photo. I would love to hear the story of that. It's hard to believe workers would draw out only 1 cell on a sheet of foundation or a queen lay in that lone cell. I wonder if a queen cell was placed there. Regardless the picture sure makes you think. Thanks for sharing.
@@allenferry1268 When I saw it, my first reaction was they moved a cell to the remote location because they did wan't the queen to know there was sedition afoot!
I have heard that theory more than once, with pictures to prove it. So yes, I'm inclined to believe they will do that, but it is the exception rather than the rule. Great point to ponder. Thanks for sharing and for watching. Stay safe, God's peace. Mr. Ed
I'm curious. If you find swarm cells in the box with the queen, could you not move that/those frame(s) to the box with the emergency cells, so that you would have a better quality option for a new queen?
I could do that, but if I get swarm cells and have emergency cells from the same hive, I'd place the swarm cells into a box that needed a queen. Emergency cells are not bad, I just prefer superseding and swarm cells to them. Thanks for watching. Stay safe, God's peace Rita. Mr. Ed
Mr Ed, enjoy your videos and learning a lot. I've fabricated my double sheets boards from your design (watching your other video). One thing I noticed in this video is you'll set the hive entrances pointing to the exterior. I was also told the entrance should face in the south-southeast direction. What's your opinion on this? Thanks again for the videos and God bless.
I'm not concerned with the compass direction of the hive entrance. As long as the openings are in the opposite direction, it will work. Thank you for your blessing and for watching. God's peace Tony. Mr. Ed
Can you put a swarm cell in the box that doesn’t have the queen and remove the emergency cells? Curious if that’s too risky or what your thoughts are on using swarm cells. Thank you and stay safe! - Tom
I now make my splits using swarm cells. Check out the link below showing how I do it. Thanks for watching, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace. Mr. Ed th-cam.com/video/4OIW-wPeQWg/w-d-xo.html
Looks like a really simple and minimally disturbing method, both of which I love. But I dont understand the need for the screen, would a simple wooden board not suffice?
A solid board would work, but the screened board serves a few functions a solid board can't provide. It allows the bees to share the queen pheromone in case the hive needs to be rejoined because the bees did not make an emergency cell, and also it allows the bees to share heat. Because we do our splits in the early spring, temperatures can get pretty cold. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
Jeff, You mention how the smaller superseding cells are inferior based on size. But shouldn’t the size of the cell theoretically be almost as large? I understand the capped portion makes the cell look smaller but the cell actually extends the depth of the cell to plastic foundation as well. This extension is rarely if ever addressed when determine queen cell size. With a swarm cell the entire cup and capped end is visible making the cell look larger. Thoughts?
It's not necessarily inferior based on it's size, rather it's based on the age of the egg that was chosen to produce the queen. You are absolutely correct when you say the cell extends to the plastic foundation, which often gives the appearance of a small cell when in truth they are the same size. I saw some beautiful queens emerge this year from dinky emergency cells. Great comment, thanks for watching. Stay safe, God's peace Joshua. Mr. Ed
that is probably whats going on. However, even when I placed newspaper between the boxes as well as the board, they still got in the screen. The solution, bring the material to the edge of the board and there will be no problem. Thanks for watching. Stay safe, God's peace. Mr. Ed
Because the bees know a lot more than I do, and I trust they will get it all worked out. In a few weeks I'll know if it was a good decision. Thanks for watching. Stay safe, God's peace. Mr. Ed
I will split EVERY hive in our yards, but the ones that have swarm cells in them at the time of the split I will use those cells to make the split. God's peace Mark. Mr. Ed
Happy Easter to you and yours as well Chris. Checker boarding frames means alternating drawn frames with ones that are not drawn, it helps drawing out even comb......most of the time. Stay safe, God's peace. Mr. Ed
Does it make a difference with placing the "Queenless box" on the bottom vs the top . With heat naturally rising . Or would the smaller "Queenless Box" recieve sufficient heat to keep the brood warm enough in a lesser colony ?
when you are going through this process, can you take the frames with the emergency cells and move them to a 3 frame or 5 frame nuc to create more splits instead of just the one.?

I was driving my friend home and there is a house on the way that has a few hives I think about 6 or 8 and they were out in their bee suits tending to their hives. First time I'd ever seen them out doing that. But I told Faye I wish I had a suit because I'd have stop and asked them if I could watch them. I use a lot of boards and learned from a guy who uses 1k boards.

Brother Jeff,
I wish you a blessed Passover, I'm a Christian that doesn't celebrate Easter.....but praise the Lord for the blessed Lamb of God, Jesus, whose shed blood is our Passover sacrifice.
Thank you Jesus for everything! I think you did good putting 2 cells in there, you just never know if you put only one. God's peace Mark.

Minor observation, what works best for me is to place the external frame holder on the side opposite of where I remove the frames. If the external frames are on the same side as the remaining frames the hive becomes much more easily tipped over.

Dear Brother Jeff,
Thank you for your reply message , I am very interesting in beekeeper work . your youtube channel also I get more information. i am Christian preacher . i from Nepal . maybe it possible to visit Nepal after some time. You may already have a place in your heart for your bees, but this
doesn’t automatically translate into desirable accommodation.
Whatever your species, the same three golden rules for choosing
your ideal home seem to apply-location, location, location-so
where you plan to put your hive is crucial for both you and your bees.
Whilst we humans may prioritize easily accessible supermarkets,
farmers markets, or organic whole-food temples, all the bees require
is nearby flowers that we haven’t made poisonous. Not an unreasonably high expectation to have of your neighbors, but one we disappoint all too frequently. And though even the wildflowers that grow
in the margins of industrial agriculture are often tainted by the overspray of pesticides harmful to bees, all is not gloom: in towns and cities millions of gardeners deliberately plant for blossoms from March
to November. From window boxes to public parks, we’ve intervened
to generate the sight and smell of beautiful flowers that profoundly
gladden our hearts.
What an awesome and informative video you did a great job! God Bless
Thank you very much for your blessing and very kind words Zeke. I am delighted to hear you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching. Stay safe, God's peace.
Mr. Ed
Thanks Mr. Ed , great video. Just what I was looking to do. GOD Bless.

Thanks for sharing the method Rich, I am familiar with the process. Stay safe, God's peace Rich.

you spoke of the bees getting between the two screens. run a bead of wood glue around the edge of the screen, then use your finger to flatten the glue into the screen. let it dry over night, flip and repeat. it will seal the edge so the bees can't get inbetween.
Thank you Jeff xoxo
You are very welcome, and thank you for watching. God's peace Chelsea.
Mr. Ed

Mr. Ed

Hi Jeff
How does the queen or even the bees know which are drone, queen and regular eggs.?
Somewhere I have a picture of a lone queen cell on bare plastic foundation.
instagram.com/p/B-4Zdtsn0GI/?
Mr. Ed
nice , is that screen [lastic or steel ? beautiful grounds
It is fiberglass mesh, and it works very well. Thanks for watching. God's peace Greg.
Mr. Ed
Can you put a swarm cell in the box that doesn’t have the queen and remove the emergency cells? Curious if that’s too risky or what your thoughts are on using swarm cells. Thank you and stay safe! - Tom

@@JeffHorchoff great job. Thank you for sharing. God Bless!! - Tom
Mr. Ed
@@JeffHorchoff Thanks for the reply! Knowledge is a precious thing :)
Mr. Ed
Hey Mr. Ed. Been watching your video's for awhile. How many colonies do you manage?
We have about 150 hives. Thanks for watching. God's peace Josh.
Mr. Ed
could the bees under the mosquito screen bottom board still smell the queen from the top?
that is probably whats going on. However, even when I placed newspaper between the boxes as well as the board, they still got in the screen. The solution, bring the material to the edge of the board and there will be no problem. Thanks for watching. Stay safe, God's peace.
Mr. Ed
Why did you decide to leave all cells in box and not scrap small ones?
Because the bees know a lot more than I do, and I trust they will get it all worked out. In a few weeks I'll know if it was a good decision. Thanks for watching. Stay safe, God's peace.
Mr. Ed
Thanks for sharing Mr.ED 10-11-2021💕💕👏🏽👏🏽
How do you decide which colonies to do this to? Do you do this to prevent swarming?
I will split EVERY hive in our yards, but the ones that have swarm cells in them at the time of the split I will use those cells to make the split. God's peace Mark.
Mr. Ed
Happy Easter!!What does it mean to checkerboard a hive?
Happy Easter to you and yours as well Chris. Checker boarding frames means alternating drawn frames with ones that are not drawn, it helps drawing out even comb......most of the time. Stay safe, God's peace.
Mr. Ed
You need a hive lift Jeff! lol
I'm looking into that right now. God's peace brother.

@@JeffHorchoff
Thank you Jeff, Gods Peace to you as well!
You sure could. Check out next weeks post, it's on splits as well.
God's peace Gordon.
