  • The Ohme Home Pro is the long-awaited sequel to the Ohme Home (formerly known as the Ohme Intelligent Wall Charger) and adds a range of new additions including a screen with the ability to change settings directly from the charge point.
    But do the new additions warrant the price increase? In this Ohme Home Pro review video, our editor Danny gives his verdict on the Home Pro and checks out the build quality, app features, ease of use and much more.
    To give you a peace of mind, we want you to know that all of our ev charger reviews are based on hundreds of product feedback comments from our own customers. So, as well as doing our own testing, you can be sure these are not just our opinions but the opinions of our customers.

    It appears the charging point requires to be installed such that the power into the unit enters the charging point from the bottom. This makes for an unnecessarily untidy installation compared to some charging points like the Sync EV where the power into the unit can be straight into the back. Meaning where trunking has been done on the interior of the property the only visible cabling outside is the Type 2 lead to the car.
    The cable holder is indeed woeful aesthetically.
    But the added choice to the EVSE ( Electric vehicle supply equipment market ) is always welcomed.

    Nice clear presentation and explanation of functionality. Thank you! Quick question though. How important is it to have a strong mobile phone signal? We can just about get one bar on our mobile phone network .....

    • @SmartHomeCharge
      @SmartHomeCharge  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for the comment - not everybody is so grateful ha! The best bet with the signal is to check whether you can easily download or stream a video at the location where the Ohme will go. That's usually a good indication. A good alternative would be the Easee One as this uses both WiFi and mobile data as a backup.

    My last (podpoint) charger was binned after I plugged in and just got a red light, nothing wrong with the car, it charged perfectly everywhere else, but the smart-arse charger refused to supply electricity to the car. It had one job and it failed.
    So I don't want the smartest charger at my house, I want the dumbest charger, basically I just want an electrical connection into my car. The smarter it is the more likely it is to leave you stranded.

    Not having a start and stop time is a no-go for me. I need a new charger as my new car doesn't have a start stop time function (stupidly didn't even consider a car wouldn't have that), but need it to just charge 00:30 -4:30. I can work out percentages myself I suppose but can't believe this basic function is missing now.

    • @SmartHomeCharge
      @SmartHomeCharge  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Worth keeping in mind that is why the Ohme asks which tariff you're on. It knows when your cheaper off-peak window is and will charge during that time where possible while also meeting your target.
      If you wanted to "only" charge during the off-peak window (regardless of what percentage your vehicle reaches), you can also do that by inputting max price limit in the Ohme app settings so it never charges when the price goes over your off-peak window price. Hope that makes sense!

    with the VW ID.5 now on software 3.1 will this now work with ohme pro?

    • @SmartHomeCharge
      @SmartHomeCharge  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hard to say. Historically, Volkswagens have been problematic when it comes to charging and opening up their API to charge point manufacturers. Currently, Ohme's website does not list VW as compatible with API charging which opens up all the advanced features. It will still charge a VW, but it works quite differently.
      However, Ohme has struck a deal with VW so here's hoping that means full API support very soon. Keep an eye on this page or contact Ohme directly to find out:

    Do they charge you for electricity at commercial rate having an EV charger or is it residential rate?

    • @SmartHomeCharge
      @SmartHomeCharge  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bea, only your electricity provider can bill you for electricity consumption. The charger will work just like any other appliance at your property and your energy supplier will bill you for your property's electricity consumption - the manufacturer of the charge point is not involved. So the cost of use entirely depends on your electricity tariff.
      You can compare EV friendly tariffs to see which might be the best for you here: www.smarthomecharge.co.uk/guides/energy-tariffs-how-to-keep-ev-charging-costs-low

    Does this have car to grid? I’ve had the OHme home for 2 years and I’m looking to upgrade to a car to grid charger with the new MG 4 long range that will replace my Peugeot E2008

    • @SmartHomeCharge
      @SmartHomeCharge  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello - the Home Pro does not have vehicle to grid (V2G), but hardly any home charge points do at the moment as the technology is still in its infancy. There are one or two units, including one supplied by Indra, that offer V2G but beware - they are huge units, plus you need a compatible vehicle as not all cars offer V2G, and you need an energy retailer that is compatible too (if you want to sell the energy that is).
      It's not impossible right now, but in my view it would be better to wait while the technology develops.

      Hi there - yes you could set this up and use it without a smartphone app if that's your preference. To be honest, even on chargers that require a smartphone app you will rarely interact with it unless you are needing to change your charging schedules or settings regularly. i barely ever interact with the charging apps - besides, when I need to make a change I would rather do it from the comfort of my sofa, especially in Winter!
      But that's just me and obviously down to personal preference. Hope that helps.

      @@SmartHomeCharge can anyone just plug into it and charge up, for example a friend, also can you prevent strangers from using it?

    • @SmartHomeCharge
      @SmartHomeCharge  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MegaHorse7 A friend can use your home charge point yes, though you may need to tell the Ohme another vehicle is plugged in. i.e. the way Ohme typically works is by communicating with your car, so it knows what battery percentage etc it is at (assuming it supports this feature). If you plugged in a friend's car, the Ohme doesn't necessarily know it's another vehicle. So you may need to "change" the vehicle in the app, which is a bit of a faff but works.
      RE strangers using it, this is incredibly unlikely if you have a schedule set up as the Ohme will only allow a charge during that time period (such as overnight). We have an article and video explaining further why you need not worry about this too much right here:

    I have an Ohme charger and it's been giving me lots of trouble. And now that Ohme said the log charger (installed less than 9 months ago) shows somew faults, they want me to pay for the replacement.
    I had it connected it to the car and to the Agile Octopus tariff and saw that it often ignores it and charges the battery to 100% at whatever price.
    A reboot fixes it, but when I contacted Ohme, they tend to blaming it on the mobile network and on the car manufacturer API. The same mobile network works for the car app and how could an API issue result in the Ohme app showing different battery charge levels on different tabs at the same time?
    My verdict: Unreliable

      Yes, if you have a schedule set up then it will only charge when a vehicle is plugged in during that time, making it very unlikely someone else could actually use it.

      @dmoreland2138 perhaps. They've always said to me they have no plans to do this. The data charges are so insignificant and their revenue model is not based on charging for the data. I can't guarantee that won't change.

    Mine won't link to my Octopus account & is on its way to fucking up my battery as it always seems to charge to 100% even when set to 80%. If this is one of the best home chargers as he said then the bar must be low.

    • @SmartHomeCharge
      @SmartHomeCharge  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a shame to hear that. Have you spoken with Ohme about it?
      As for the review, I can only base it on what our customers had said and my own testing (I've been using Ohme tech on and off for years), and I haven't had any serious problems with it and found them very reliable. Of course, there will be individual issues so I hope Ohme can resolve that for you.
      If you're seriously worried about your vehicle battery, then it would be best to set to charge limit inside the vehicle itself. i.e. set it to 80% on the vehicle settings. The car is always in control of the charge, so if the limit is set by the vehicle then your Ohme won't be able to override that.
      Thanks for watching,
