We are only a few years down the line from when Disney was truly great. Starting with Tangled they started pumping out amazing films that made them indecernable from the brilliance that was Pixar. Frozen, Wreck it Ralph, Big Hero 6, Moana, Zootopia. I used to say that Disney were the master story tellers because everything they touched was gold. What went wrong?
When I saw the trailer for this movie, it just made me want to watch Atlantis or even the Mummy. The animation looks nice, but not Disney. I’d say it looks more Illumination with the soft cartoony curves and the ameba-like squishy-ness. It didn’t spark anything in me like the Encanto trailer did when I saw it.
I knew this movie existed. But the marketing for it was not even there. I think the reason why I don't want to see it is because it just looks so different from Disney. Like if it was released by Illumination and or Blue Sky then I would get it. It has that sort of vibe that the Ice Age movies have where it is a sub par family friendly movie.
To me, it feels like the post renaissance era all over again, after Moana we got good films, but something seems to be missing. I enjoyed Ralph 2 but there was no need for a sequel. Frozen 2, I think some story elements seem forced and clearly just a transitional movie for an eventual Frozen 3 with better plot. I love Raya, but as a movie I don't think it works, the plot of looking for the pieces and meeting companions would be amazing for a series, but as a movie, it feels one note. Encanto was huge and I like it, the plot needed a bit more planning/development, songs are catchy which is why I think it got huge once it hit streaming. Hopefully Wish is a new Little Mermaid/Tangled kinda movie and puts Disney Animation back on track.
Honestly, I had pretty low expectations for Strange World. I liked the world-building theme, but it was marred by the half-baked resolution and the heavy-handed climate change moral. I really didn't care for Searcher, Jaeger and Ethan constantly being at each other's throats, because all three looked childish whenever they did so. After Encanto and Turning Red, movies where the entire plot is about family infighting get tiresome. It's a mediocre film by itself. When measured against other Disney movies, it falls flat.
I just watched Strange World and i’m about to say something pretty controversial here but i thought the movie was good. Not great, but not terrible either. It was good. The animation was beautiful, the voice acting was good and the soundtrack was cool. The story however had great ideas, but not so good execution. I would give a 6.5/10. Good, but not great. Shame that Disney didn’t gave this one a chance to shine.
I generally agree with you here. I might rate it a little bit lower, but I thought it was a decent movie. I'm just looking for something great from Disney.
literally just saw it, was one of the VERY SELECT FEW that saw it. it was good, but they could have done better with marketing and hypeing up the movie
