Disney: "We don't make sci-fi, adventure-themed movies because nobody watches them." Also Disney: *Purposely reduces amount of promotions* Next thing you know, Disney will stop making these kinds of movies all-together just because of their own choices. 😔
They don’t realize how much ppl actually enjoyed their sci-fi adventure movies bc they don’t get most of them a chance to do good in theaters. So many ppl love both Atlantis and Treasure Planet which are some sci-fi movies that weren’t successful in theaters but had gotten a huge fan base.
You should totally watch Treasure Planet it's my favorite movie of all time and it's an incredible underrated Disney classic!!! It's super fun and still holds up really well!!!
This is my favorite Disney movie. I loved how complex the character motives were, the symbolism, the representation, the worldbuilding, and the comedy. I love everything about it so much. Edit after watching: I definitely agree with you that this should’ve been a series. They could’ve explored much much more that way.
While I do think they making this into a series would’ve helped the character development and relationships be more impactful. I’m also struggling to think of how they could make at least the plot of the movie be stretched out into at least a season. It would be really cool to continue seeing everyone’s journey after that trip and how all of them adapt
@@maem7462 the skyship could’ve been completely destroyed, or it could maybe be a lost in space situation where they have to get it up and running. Just spitballing but I think there’s plenty of potential
@@Assasinine True. Also after watching the video and some of the things that Bill thought they could expand on could help stretch it out more. Seeing the town before could be a good thing. It could be really cool to see the crew and Searcher and his dad before the mission and in that town at that point. Of course seeing the progression from what it was like to how it is now could've been nice as well like what was mentioned in the video also seeing Ethan with his friends more as well. The more I think abt it there could be a decent amount of things that could expand the movie into a mini series
What a great breakdown of the movie! I’ve been having trouble figuring out how i feel about it, and you captured it perfectly. There were some REALLY amazing moments, some great characters, but at its core disney yet again just didn’t give it the best shot with its larger than life world and story. A fun watch for sure- Defenitley woulda been a good short series tho too!
I really enjoyed watching the family’s varied dynamics and learning how the world worked alongside Ethan when those were given the spotlight to naturally play out. As for my issues with the movie, your recommendations make total sense! In trying to make the message accessible, the heavy-handed writing choices that repeatedly emphasized “look how flawed both dads are” and “the world is alive so we must change our ways” prevented giving enough attention to the connective tissue of the plot. The other characters and the world-building elements felt more functional than additive and alive, making the movie less compelling overall. Strange World is worth a watch but Treasure Planet is definitely a fully realized and mature version of a relationship-centered fantasy adventure, so I strongly recommend it!
Treasure Planet is a Disney hidden treasure and you should most definitely at least watch and enjoy it in your own time. I have yet to watch this movie yet mainly because I haven’t had time to sit and enjoy any movies lately. But appreciate this breakdown and thoughts makes me want to make time to watch.
I resonated hard with this complex sort of daddy issue story line. I thought I had a great relationship with my own dad for almost 30 years, until I got into regular therapy after a lot of health diagnoses. I unpacked a lot of stuff from my childhood that wasn't great, but also wasn't malicious. Worked on more present day things that had just... warped my sense of self-worth, and tangled it all up in his approval. But at the same time, we do joke around with each other and we have those silly family moments. So it was just interesting to see both the very blatant parent/child strained relationship, and the more complicated, subtle issues.
23:12 I actually like that convo because it shows how growing up both Jaeger and Searcher because, in their games, someone has to be a bad guy and that's the goal.
I think the ending would have been better it when the camera zoomed out it showed the giant turtle swimming in the ocean and it shows other turtles that are much bigger implying that the main island turtle is just a baby and there are other worlds to explore.
I absolutely adored this movie and have already rewatched it 5 times in a few days, it’s truly an amazing movie and super comforting. Hit me right in the daddy issues and made me so excited to see the world and I want to see more of their universe. Not sure how but I need it
You should absolutely watch Treasure Planet!!! It's a very unique film compared to what was the norm for Disney's films with a great message and awesome characters! Thank you for your review on this movie, I was definitely not planning on going to the theatres to watch this because it felt like a weird cash grab, so it's nice that it did have some good aspects to it!!
I liked to see Searcher as un coordinated because his dad was always there to catch him both literally and metaphorically so he never had to be good at the things he wasn't interested in. Yet at the same time they have all sorts of similarities, then finally the catch that Searcher was doing the same thing to his son in a sense. Love your content ^-^
@@thethirdbill I think that moment in the beginning where Searcher stops out of curiousity probably wouldn't have been the only time he stopped to observe where his dad wouldve just kept moving forward. I think if it was a series we might have gotten to see more of searchers interests and strengths as a kid kinda like we started to see with Ethan as he started to find himself.
I really like this movie, specially the plot twist. I believe this movie will get more recognition and love in 10 years, just like what happened to Treasure Planet, Atlantis, and Megamind, for example.
I wholeheartedly agree with everyone saying "yes, absolutely, please tell us what you think of Treasure Planet"--and, if I may, I'd like to toss two more suggestions in the ring to round out the "vaguely sci-fi movies starring sensitive male protagonists with daddy issues" club: Disney's Atlantis, and Titan AE!
37:48 I’m sorry for having to keep commenting but I love this movie with its flaws & all, but yeah it would’ve been nice to show the crew figuring out that because the turtle their land is on is always moving, there’s seemingly no stagnant air, they can harness the constant wind for a seemingly endless supply of power. What clued me in at first was how Meridian’s farm craft seemingly stayed in place IN THE AIR before Searcher reeled it back in, when normal airborne objects float away from one spot. So it’s my conclusion it’s the turtle that’s moving that’s causing the displacement that created that lil phenomenon and why seemingly the whole city relied on airborne craft even way before Pando was introduced, they figured out that somehow airborne craft is much easier to maneuver in WHERE THEY ARE as otherwise the physics of it on a STILL land with more stagnant air wouldn’t have worked well with their hover tech.
Another factor that has this movie be a box office flop is that is happened the day before thanksgiving. While not everyone celebrates that holiday there are a decent amount of ppl who do and they are likely getting ready for the holiday and didn’t have much time to see a movie

I disagree with the idea that “villain = antagonist.” While this is often true, a villain is inherently bad whereas an antagonist is simply someone who creates an issue or opposes the protagonist. Sometimes the protagonist can even be the villain (an example would be Death Note).

Excellent review on one of the most underrated Disney movies. I went to the theater knowing nothing about this movie, and I was pleasantly surprised. It's not my favorite one, but it was new, fresh and - I hate to say this - a bit too intellectual to the GP.
I haven't seen this movie but I'm mad at disney bc I just recently found out it even existed??? then I saw the trailer and I felt like it spoiled a lot and also made it look bland somehow. 13:54 “Animation is the devil’s medium”, no wonder we have stuff like Bendy and the Ink Machine and creepy pastas about Mickey Mouse cuz it might as well legit been witchcraft making these animations 😂🤣🥹🥲
I really enjoyed this movie, I do agree with you on some points, I also wish they coulve expanded on the world building of the town and how they lived a little more and more bout how their lives changed wihout Pando, like how did the people react when they got home and explained what happened, how did they learn to adapt, what happens now everyone knows they're living on a massive turtle, how did they even get there in the first place? There's so much that wasn't explained that could be explored further, it really would've done more as a series than a film but it was still good nonetheless and it was a fun watch. The people crying over the son being gay do make me laugh though cos it's like such a small aprt of the film, it's there and in some ways it is significant that it's so normalised but at the same time I like how it's not a big deal, that's how representation should be done. Though I do think that's a part of why this film was so underpromoted :/
when i went to see the movie, i was by myself on the theatre because I was pissed off that there wasn't any promotion for the movie at all. to be fair, I went to see it during a weekday after I got out of uni, and I went to a cinema that not many people go to, but holy crap, it was SO weird to be sat in a theatre all by myself on the first week that the movie came out. it's a silly little movie that should be seen. even if it's no one's favorite, it has an interesting story and lovely visuals, and it's enjoyable enough. it's one of those movies that little me would have loved only because of the colors, and I'm sure some other kid would love to see it too
i really hope people aren't too harsh on searcher for the relationship between him and his dad and him calling jeager a "bad dad" etc., if you as a parent consistently put your child's life in danger then you're a bad parent. i've also seen people get angry at searcher for not talking about jeager with ethan and sharing stories but to be honest, if my (future) children were to ask about my parents then i would simply have to say they were bad parents and abusive, because i understand a child wanting to know more about their family but children also need to learn to respect people's boundaries if something makes them uncomfortable.
"Would be better as a series than a movie" is how I feel about Raya, though I think Strange World feels like a more complete story than Raya does. Strange World ranks respectably middle for me, just under Pinocchio and above Meet the Robinsons. Not the best Disney Canon movie, but still firmly in the "more positives than negatives" camp (though, for me, the only Disney Canon movie to approach being truly "bad" is Chicken Little, and even that I can see why someone might like it)
36:17 I think it was more so for the Clisto the LEADER/PRESIDENT of the nation they’re living in needed to see the literal bigger picture of their existence on the turtle and that they have scientific tools on the ship to record evidence to bring to the people for proof of their discovery when the decision to stop using pando has to be made.
I think the only other place I hear the "hardly knew 'er" joke as often as on your videos is from the show Last Man on Earth. Make of that what you will.
The Solarpunk ethos and philosophy at the heart of Strange World explains the lack of ego from Searcher (focus on community over the Hero Journey). The Hero/Antihero binary is very deep in human psychology and serves the capitalist system we so much love. It plays very much into our narcissism and the system takes full advantage of this primal need. Heroes are doomed from the start and need an antagonist to become one. A hero without a villain is just another member of the community, nothing special. Solarpunk understand this hard antagonism to be at the root of our toxic relationship with earth. A story that imagines a society where this conflict is on its way of getting resolved, taking cues from the Primal Outpost game, seems unrealistic or plain wrong says a lot about how little evolution we have done despite the high tech and globalization. We are still cave people fighting the monsters and the system knows this very well. Let's celebrate this film as pick into a possible future where we have evolved beyond these animalistic needs.
I don't think Searcher is truly scrawny. It is more John Krasinski vs. the Rock or Arnold Schwarzenegger. He's fit. He just doesn't have the physique of a body builder.
Please do a "Trying to Stan: Paramore". Some songs (from oldest to newest): Pressure, Emergency, Conspiracy, Hallelujah, Misery Business, When it Rains, Fences, Careful, Ignorance, Brick by Boring Brick, The Only Exception, Misguided Ghosts, All I wanted, Decode, Ain't it Fun, Last Hope, Still into You, Hard Times, Rose-Coloured Boy, Fake Happy, 26, Caught in the Middle, Idle Worship, This is Why, The News. I know this is a lot, these are just SOME of my favourites, there are plenty of other incredible songs (they have a lot of songs).
Unpopular opinion, but was anyone else a little put off by how everything was still perfectly fine after they got rid of Pando? Like, I understand that they had to get rid of it or else the world, and therefore everyone else, would die, but I feel like they brushed past the consequences of getting rid of electricity. I know we can't get that dark in a disney movie, but still.
Can you react to the In Case I Make It album by Will Wood? It’s very emotional. Some I think you’ll like are Um, It’s Kind of A lot Euthanasia Becoming the Last Names White Noise Cicada Days Against the Kitchen Floor The Main Character Also, loved this movie! Shocking how few people went to see it
14:23 lol, Searcher might’ve been a dick here and deliberately worded it that way to spite his dad, but that’s pretty damn awful and it might clue in a lil to how kinda selfish Searcher really is inside. Searcher prolly didn’t mean it at that moment, but real people would say awful things without meaning to when they’re in super emotional/vulnerable circumstances.
Difference is "Treasure Planet" was a generally good film that actually tried to tell an exciting, fun engaging story with no agenda behind it. You know, back when Disney actually cared about entertaining people.
It's a very Solar Punk (rather than Steam Punk) movie. - If you haven't heard of Solar Punk, look it up! I pretty much agree with your analysis throughout. Flawed movie, great sentiments throughout. The environmentalist ideas were well-crafted metaphors. The clashing personalities of this family didn't quite work so well, even as they are kind of a progression of environmentalism too, from the explorer who wants to experience the environment and unlock its secrets, to the farmer who wants to help people by using the environment, to the more wholistic environmentalist who wants to be attuned to it. Also, I'm pretty annoyed that the LGBTQIA+ rep is once again such a tiny moment, it's, like, *stupidly* easy to write out by simply changing around some voice lines in dubs. I think they kinda tried to make it at least somewhat resistant to that by having his boyfriend give him that one card or whatever. Felt like a clear compromise, trying to go as far as they possibly could to make it harder to be removed. But I don't think censors are gonna care.
I love pulp adventure. I had a lot of hope for this movie, and I was ultimately let down. I found it so, so dull and tepid. It's a daddy issues movie only this time with modern Disney's focus on generational trauma. Only we have Encanto, Turning Red, Frozen 2. Moana, Chicken Little, Goofy Movie, all those were "prove myself to dad" movies. It's growing a little trite at this point. We haven't had a proper villain in years at this point after so long of the twist villain, and now several movies of none at all. Animation wise, it's good, but we've not seen significant stylistic change in a long time. Raya, Encanto, Onward from Pixar and I'd throw Moana in there as being very, very similar in a house style that, while technically proficient, lacks anything beyond. Especially compared to what Dreamworks has been doing with Spiderverse, Bad Guys and Puss in Boots. I was left feeling for the first time that this movie was trying to dress itself up in socially progressive Solar Punk aesthetics in hopes of attracting an audience, but kind of forgot to give us an interesting movie. In short: I'd love the art book, but I was let down by the film.

i really hope people aren't too harsh on searcher for the relationship between him and his dad and him calling jeager a "bad dad" etc., if you as a parent consistently put your child's life in danger then you're a bad parent. i've also seen people get angry at searcher for not talking about jeager with ethan and sharing stories but to be honest, if my (future) children were to ask about my parents then i would simply have to say they were bad parents and abusive, because i understand a child wanting to know more about their family but children also need to learn to respect people's boundaries if something makes them uncomfortable.
Treasure Planet was great. You should do that
"Would be better as a series than a movie" is how I feel about Raya, though I think Strange World feels like a more complete story than Raya does.
Strange World ranks respectably middle for me, just under Pinocchio and above Meet the Robinsons. Not the best Disney Canon movie, but still firmly in the "more positives than negatives" camp (though, for me, the only Disney Canon movie to approach being truly "bad" is Chicken Little, and even that I can see why someone might like it)
I loved this movie, but it felt a little short- I agree that it might’ve been better as a series
36:17 I think it was more so for the Clisto the LEADER/PRESIDENT of the nation they’re living in needed to see the literal bigger picture of their existence on the turtle and that they have scientific tools on the ship to record evidence to bring to the people for proof of their discovery when the decision to stop using pando has to be made.
if you do treasure planet then you need to do atlantis the lost empire if you havent seen it yet
i really hate how disney purposefully didn't promote it well because it's actually a really good movie
You should absolutely watch Treasure Planet!!
Jaeger?! Searcher??!!! I hardly even know how to finish this dad joke.
close enough. GG.
I liked the concept of the movie not the execution, maybe it should have been a series instead of the movie
I honestly don’t think the ‘moms gone’ thing was meant to be a meta joke! I think it was just purely a silly subversive wordplay joke :3
Bill are you going to do a Trying To Stan: The Last of Us HBO? I think that would be a phenomenal set of videos.
Searcher I hardly!
Jaeger I hardly!
I think the only other place I hear the "hardly knew 'er" joke as often as on your videos is from the show Last Man on Earth. Make of that what you will.
I'm not the only one who remembers Last Man on Earth?! I thought the same thing~
I enjoyed the movie but I did think things could have been tweaked a bit
Let's celebrate this film as pick into a possible future where we have evolved beyond these animalistic needs.
do we make recs in comments? If so: Official rec for Mystery Skulls Animated, I really think it's a great vibe
Please watch Treasure Planet. You would love it and might cry a lot.
You should try to Stan bears in trees
Omg yes please do a video on treasure planet but be warned you WILL cry
Yes watch treasure planet!
I don't think Searcher is truly scrawny. It is more John Krasinski vs. the Rock or Arnold Schwarzenegger. He's fit. He just doesn't have the physique of a body builder.
LILO AND STICH HAS A VILLAIN!!!!!!!!
Excited for that to come out
“SEARCHER!? I hardly know er’”
thank you for fulfilling your end of the agreement lol
The pando plants should have been called power plants
...oh my god i love it and im mad at myself
Why would I watch it in theaters, I pay for Disney+ for a reason. I liked Ethan but he was no Luz or Barney.
Unpopular opinion, but was anyone else a little put off by how everything was still perfectly fine after they got rid of Pando? Like, I understand that they had to get rid of it or else the world, and therefore everyone else, would die, but I feel like they brushed past the consequences of getting rid of electricity. I know we can't get that dark in a disney movie, but still.
i dont want to spoil it before you get to that part of the video lol
Can you react to the In Case I Make It album by Will Wood? It’s very emotional. Some I think you’ll like are
Um, It’s Kind of A lot
Euthanasia
Becoming the Last Names
White Noise
Cicada Days
Against the Kitchen Floor
The Main Character
Also, loved this movie! Shocking how few people went to see it
I don't care what people hate this movie I LOVE STRANGE WORLD! IS AN AMAZING MOVIE
Its not a bad movie its just a little boring, the representation is good, people just like complaining.
yayed out loud when i saw this
14:23 lol, Searcher might’ve been a dick here and deliberately worded it that way to spite his dad, but that’s pretty damn awful and it might clue in a lil to how kinda selfish Searcher really is inside.
Well yeah Disney is kinda tired out but idk where you got the idea that this movie has any sorta agenda behind it its about explorers
Plus even if it did they barely advertised it at all which has nothing to do with the story
Why isn't Strange World "generally good film that actually tried to tell an exciting, fun engaging story" and what agenda are you talking about?
@@mari-emm agreed- strange world is a lovely film with a lovely message and a few awkward dialogue and scene choices
You should watch the new Puss in Boots! It's really good and takes on some surprising themes really well. I really want to know what you think of it!
i hope you enjoy(ed) the video!
@@thethirdbill I did! :D
Man, I hope you watch my future animated series some day.
Try reacting to crywank if you want they are really good awesome video btw!
I love this movie
22:43 That's not true. There is man vs man, man vs, nature, man vs. society, man vs. nature, man vs technology, and man vs. fate.
I'm not sure I get what you're saying. Those are all different forms of hero and villain.
Every story has heroes and villains. Someone has never watched Nichijou, Bluey, or Lucky Star.
i have watched bluey (i hope you enjoy the video if you check it out) also, the villain of bluey is time/growing up.
@@thethirdbill I think a villain is a person. Conflict doesn't=villian.
@@thethirdbill You should check out Nichijou its hilarious. Lucky Star is pretty good too.
Day 23 of asking for a vid abt the song of Achilles
I know this isn’t music/show related but anyways,
(The audiobook is wonderful and that’s coming from someone who doesn’t quite enjoy audiobooks, if you’ve read the book but haven’t heard the audiobook it is worth it)
Here a book quote
“He is half of my soul, as the poets say”
hi bill, i know you’re mostly doing reactions to tv shows & movies now but i think you would really like ateez’s music if you checked them out - they just released a new album a few days ago and the title track Halazia is ✨life changing✨
Yeager? I hardly see her!
Father? I hardly love her!
I didn’t even laugh at these I just said yikes under my breath
