I feel really bad for Altman. Man was doing his job, just happened upon the Marker and suddenly was propelled into a martyrdom for the cult basically responsible for the downfall of humanity.

Saddest thing about him is he wanted to get rid of markers, but when he tried to warn humanity of marker influence cultist killed him and redacted his work, by changing it into praise of a marker
Imagine if Jesus never wanted to be become a martyr? Altman story makes me think about all the supposed people in religion who might not want to have been a part of such.

ngl, when people ask if i am religious, i say i am a practicing Unitologist. and if they ask what that is, i tell them sentient moons left behind markers for me to find and if i find one i'll attain convergence to make us whole.

One thing I like of how the Unintology is made, it's that is really similar on how humans tend to deal with religion. It tend to start peacefully, but if the religion grows as the "standard" religion, don't be surprise if it have a period of extremist to other groups

That's because like anything, it will be exploited by someone at some point. Not just religion, but anything organized and has people, science and politics, will be corrupted if left stagnate and not reaffirmed.

I feel like Samuel Irons is an underappreciated legend.
Like you said, he proves that there are genuinely good Unitologists. He knew his religion gets a bad wrap, but he tried his hardest to prove there are decent, reasonable people in it and willingly gave his life to save people he barely knew. Even though the basis of his religion was not what it thought it was, he still tried to do the right thing.
Even Ramirez, who first thought Sam a lunatic, later realized this.
Dead Space and even the other EA game Dante's Inferno taught me that one should not always blindly follow those above you and even those revered can become corrupted, but it also taught me that genuinely good people can be found in these kind of groups and shouldn't be forgotten even if all you see on the surface may seem bad.

The two most intriguing things to me within Dead Space are the Necromorphs themselves and Unitology

depend, since there are those into the lore and also agree how stuff in DS2 and DS3 still work, like the way Roanoke Gaming's channel try to explore about the Necromorph biology itself.
But if you mean the gameplay itself then yes... EA completely ruined it.
The brethren moon reminds me of Hegel’s claim that “spirit is a bone”. Unitology’s claims of unity is quite literal.

I liked how it reflects on religion as a whole. Religion in of itself isn't a bad thing. I think its within human nature to wonder where we came from and what happens when we pass on. It gives us a blueprint on how to treat each other and suggestions on how we should live our lives. It's when religion is weaponized and used to claim your group is above others because your a part of that religion when it gets perverted. If you truly believe in a higher power you should respect all life regardless of its beliefs.
The marker controlled the minds of higher ranked members. Higher ranked members controlled other people. Everything was to led to the ultimate reunion - a convergence event. Making them whole to become a Brethren moon. Damn...

There's been a couple of interviews with Visceral devs, who seemed to have conflicting visions.
One dev, Ben Wanat, claimed that they wanted to do a sort of soft reboot which accepted that Earth was gone and went for a more post apocalyptic scenario where the protagonist would explore the galaxy looking for ships to scavenge in order to improve their own ship. They mentioned being interested in Ellie being the protagonist, and had an infamous quote claiming that they had spent some time working out the origin story of the Necromorphs and humanity's role in the dark universe, and that players could find a way out of the Necromorph apocalypse but regret that they did.

Another more recent interview provided a different premise, one that I suspect was more likely. This idea would have stuck with Isaac and Carver, with them recycling the idea of Shadow Isaac and Isaac wondering if he should bother saving Earth or embrace the unitologist vision of him as a herald. As much as I preferred Earth being doomed and Ellie being the hero rather than another 'save Earth' plot, I suppose they might have wanted to provide some resolution to certain plot threads (like the fate of the Black Marker). Personally I'd love it if the finale involved diving deep into the bottom of the ocean, fighting aquatic Necromorphs, and fighting a 'Shadow Isaac' which in reality would be the Black Marker's last attempt to defend itself.
Out of EVERYTHING the ONLY ONE THING kinda good I can say about unitology is instead of missing someone, but remember them. And find peace knowing we'll be with them again someday. Just hopefully not all necrotized and psychotic.
So glad I FINALLY found a channel that talks about ALL of dead space lore. Never had the chance to read the books. Only the movies, 3 games, and the wii.

Unitology is strange religion. It is ofcourse parody or reference to certain real world shady religion. For creators of dead space stories it offers easy twists since you can always reveal that someone seemingly helping main character turns out to be evil cultist and backstabs them.
There are huge parts of this religion that makes it just evil death cult. But to contrast that. Their wholesome message of unity. Their opposition to planet cracking and their meaning giving rituals make them more than just plain evil cult. Also dead space story creators can use the religiob to give ominous but true expositons.
Frankly I don't understand why they oppose planet cracking. Doesn't the marker need for humanity or whoever to exolore space and bring more resources to earth. Planet cracking is both a way to find markers and advance markers plans so unitologist should love it!
who knows maybe the subconsciously knew about the moons (they got almost everything else right) and planet cracking could literally destroy one of the sleeping moons
Honestly every religion have a nice message but there is always a radical and violent part, in literally every religion

The 2016 iteration of the UAC was most likely inspired by Dead Space. In previous games, the UAC was much more of a generic profit-oriented company who stumbled upon Hell by chance rather than because of satanic intent.

Their church in DS2 is the most breathtaking part of the game. The church's architechture reminds me of the Imperium's in Warhammer 40K.

When I was in psychology there was a discussion about socialpathy and that we dicussed whatever or not it was perhaps a result of a defense mechanism - a sort of a coping thing like a response to a seemingly uncaring world.
It's really hard to watch considering there'll never be anymore dead space games :(

Although the series was canceled I feel that dead space 4 would reveal a very lovecraftian origin to the makers that they aren't from our universe 🤔
I think the scariest thing about the marker and unitology is it’s based on something that actually exists in their universe. Like you can’t argue that the marker doesn’t technically create life, while yes evil in nature it’s terrifying because it’s existence in their universe only goes to further evidence of higher beings, which only gives unitologist more base to believe on despite the glaring issues of the marker.
It makes you think, if we humanity found a device of similar nature to the marker that is completely unexplainable while also being inherently evil, would we blindly line up to our deaths out of misplaced faith? Would we choose to understand it first before we accepted it?
Think the movie arrival just with a marker.
Unitology is just a mix of Scientology, Heaven’s Gate and People’s Temple, and a mix of Weyland-Yutani.
The “religion” is just a front and facade for Unitology and only want the Marker and Necromorphs as tools against EarthGov.

So basically 'unitology' is the effect of Brethren moons' mind control to make the target population itself want to 'make themselves whole' with them.
This, the target population is made to rationalize as them getting elevated or evolved.
They also think that the 'necromorph' intermediary stage is actually a higher form of being, as is apparent in the Awakening 'epilogue' of this series in which the cult literally chops off the healthy hands of their victims, to replace them with sharp objects, even though the effect of the markers to make them necromorphs is not there.

How does the marker produce bacteria? Do you need to touch the marker or does it send viral bacteria telephatically?
Also what is the reason necromorphs can't aproach the marker?
You should watch the aegis vii timeline for the explanation of why the necromorphs cant get close to the marker its explained in the first segment. For bacteria I would have to say because the marker doesnt waste any part of organic life so anything with your DNA inside it would be affected so bodily waste and blood and other parts of bodies that the marker wouldn't make a use for would be turned into corruption hence why it smells really bad or like shit. I'd recommend checking out roanokegaming for that topic as he covers enemy design and explains them he did one on the bacteria or corruption from dead space it made a lot of sense to me so hope it helps.

I understand everything about the process after bactetia is introduced. How it works how marker lowers your immune system. How delusions, suicides and acts of agression help it spread.
Still drawing black how the bacteria is introduced unless you need to touch the marker which could be the case and need to learn more about the endgame of the infestation.

What hurt Dead Space 3 the most was they tried to cash in on add-on purchases like other games. Stick to your own formula and never change the flavor.
Cough cough ration seals cough cough dlc has always been a thing. If they do the same thing over and over people would lose interest and the formula becomes stale and boring. To keep things fresh you need to add things or new concepts into the mix.
