Unitology is one of the most interesting fictional cults. As always good video man.

Only a heretic of apostasy would call the Church of Transformation and Rebirth "fictional".

i was 13 when this game released, picked it up and it was the most influential horror video game in my life. I love the games & especially the lore within. I still play them anually (especially the first 2 games) just to have a bit of nostalgia of the simpler days :) Just wanted to say i really appreciate these lore videos and you're making them really good, thank you

I just recently read Dead Space Martyr for the first time and i must say It was quite a fucking journey, dead space 2 sets a specific view on Who Michael Altman actually is and what he did, but Martyr talks about the REAL Altman, unexpected and damn interesting, great character.
New subscriber btw, absolutely love your work!

I love the resemblance between Altman and Isaac. I just wish Isaac had leveraged it to take Danik on directly and turn his followers on him. The Enigma is also the name of the division of the church on Titan. What's interesting about the Enigma statues in the Deadspace 2 church is their resemblance to an entity called "The King in Yellow" aka Hastur. Hastur spreads his influence by a mark called "The Yellow Sign". The Yellow Sign automatically indoctrinates someone who sees it to follow the King in Yellow, as is a mysterious play known as the King in Yellow. The play has a slightly different effect on people than the Yellow Sign in that it makes people mad in a way that damages their ability to function in society. Usually this results in violence or death. I believe their inclusion in the Deadspace 2 Church is meant to teach us about the nature of the Marker. That its a virulent infohazard. I blame this infohazardous nature for Earthgov never pursuing more sustainable, less damaging routes like a Dyson Swarm.
Currently working on a Deadspace fanfic that's supposed to be my vision of 4, revolving around the Earthgov equivalent of the real world Continuity of Government planning done by the United states. In this case, its a division of Marker Ops intended to act as a failsafe in the event of a global necromorph outbreak. I call it the "Biological Continuity Project." There are a number of excommunicated Unitologists on staff as well as family members of the Ishimura Crew. They're bound together by a common sense of betrayal, that their respective parts of society lied to and used them. Their command center is the USL Dunkirk, created by tunneling into a large asteroid and attaching multiple engine and slipspace drive units. The L in the designation stands for "Lifeboat" as the term "Arkship" would have created a controversy with non American crewmen and residents. The Dunkirk is basically a mobile colony and prototype space habitat that the creators of it hope will become a model for Dyson Swarm habitats as time goes on. Their goals are three fold; 1. Preserve a genetically viable population of as many species as possible, through technology, cloning, or bioforming if need be. 2. Create a complete picture of Mankind's history with the Marker (with the discovery of Tau Volantis this shifts to try and find out how bad the damage from the Markers is galaxy wide.) They then want to use this complete picture to design warnings about and countermeasures to the Marker. 3. To build a dyson swarm as a viable alternative to both planet cracking and Marker generated electricity. A Dyson swarm is very different from a rigid dyson sphere.
A Dyson Swarm is a large cloud of space habitats, megastructures and ships commonly built from the planets in a system. However, planets can be left in a system and the swarm built around them. A Dyson swarm primarily runs on solar or fusion power, and is a path I feel the marker would have actively prevented mankind from following via its mental influence. A dyson swarm would be able to scatter as a Bretheren Moon enters the system, ensuring that at least some survivors would make it. I believe this and the independence from the Marker it creates are why the Bretheren Moons would try to stomp this out if they could. A dyson swarm is capable of keeping quadrillions of people healthy, productive and comfortable with room for stations ENTIRELY devoted to wildlife preserves. Its a bountiful harvest, but one unlikely to utilize their Markers and eventually more likely to figure out that the Markers are malevolent rather than benign. I believe if this had ever been discussed as an active path for humanity in the Deadspace Universe, the Markers likely would have manipulated their Unitology thralls to violently thwart attempts at design and construction.

      Prominent Members
Doctor Roana Locke - Captain of the USL Dunkirk, Geneticist; related to one of the Eudora crew, Doctor Locke believes that nothing the marker promises in Unitology can't be achieved with eventual independant research on Humanity's part and actively advocates for this view. Because of this she's drawn a number of excommunicated Unitologists embittered about losing their faith to become loyal to her. Her insistance that "We don't need no stinkin Marker" to ascend has become a rallying cry for those left behind by or wronged by unitology. She got her start in life extension technology, which she was shunned for by Earthgov due to population issues. Non Unitology Earthgov tended to view immortality as immoral in a world where resources were becoming increasingly scarce. Some of her ideas make people a little edgy for one reason or another, including but not limited to; 'genetic ressurection' of people through cloning, using cloning to create babies with more than two parents, and allowing people to biologically modify themselves to some form of Androgeny or Hermaphroditism, allowing someone to reproduce both by siring a child and by carrying one. As you can imagine, her methods and creations both fascinate and unnerve both Earthgov and Unitologists alike. Her work on DNA Lygase had her drafted into Marker Ops, where she developed a Serum used to protect a person's body from the necromorph bacteria and mutations induced by the marker. This serum was originally based on an anti aging treatment she developed and thus is capable of removing large amounts of stress related damage from a person's body, for example removing the silver hairs from Isaac's salt and pepper hair or softening Carver's scars, overall it was projected to double the average person's lifespan.
Sgt. Nora Mercer - First officer and field commander USL Dunkirk, emergency planning specialist, formerly; Unitology Liason Officer, Earthgov - Excommunicated with her son Chiron and her husband Steven after Mercer's actions on the Ishimura divided and outraged lower members of the faith, the Biological Continuity Project has given her new purpose. She is adept at figuring out how to obtain the basics of life out of scraps and shards of technology or pieces of plants. After her husband Steven was lost trying to help salvage the Ishimura for the project (presumed dead, as necromorph activity had resumed on titan following the Moons' arrival), her son Chiron began to act out out of anger, determined to prove he wasn't like his grandfather. Likewise his mother is consumed at times with a desire to atone for Challus' butchery. Only time will tell if either of them will find the redemption and peace they seek.
Reporter Jillian Watkins - A reporter who originally advocated for the declassification of the Ishimura incidents by Earthgov, she was covering a protest by family members of the Ishimura Crew at Marker Ops when the Bretheren moons came. Originally an outspoken critic of the church who advocated for criminal charges against its heirarchy, she softened somewhat after the Bretheren moons interrupted the protest with their arrival and Nora and Steven let the protestors take shelter in the military bunker originally intended solely for classified Earthgov use. Jillian's daughter Susan tries to imitate her past hostility towards Unitologists, something Jillian needs to put a stop to on a regular basis. This has lead to a semi rivalry between Susan and Chiron. One of Jillian's arms is hampered by a slasher wound sustained during the initial attack by the Bretheren Moons, requiring substantial physical therapy and surgical intervention. She acts as spokeswoman for the families of the Ishimura crew within the Dunkirk.
Haven Akeley - Bookseller, Church of Unitology, formerly Titan sect - One of Isaac and Ellie's neighbors on Luna, Akeley is plain spoken and very good at reading the internal politics of his church. He acts as spokesman for the Unitology survivors on the Dunkirk. His moderate temperament and position as a bookseller made him a target for Danik's sect, as they wanted to control the flow of information into the church from the outside. Akeley believed freedom of information was critical to achieving convergence, as without accurate knowledge, one cannot live a virtuous life worthy of rebirth. His willingness to stand up to Danik lead to him, his Wife, and his mother being excommunicated from the church and fleeing to the ruins of Titan with other survivors of the Titan sect. His splinter faction makes up the bulk of the Unitology survivors on the Dunkirk. He and his mother were friendly to Ellie when she came seeking the history of the marker rather than the church propaganda about its own history, in an effort to find a way to try and stop the Markers. This inevitably lead to Isaac meeting them. Eventually Isaac lets slip that the marker spoke to him on Titan, repeating the apparition of Nicole's statement that "the Makers must be absorbed." Realizing that Isaac had the potential to be a unitology prophet the way Altman was said to have been, and possibly Danik's downfall, he and his family fled rather than give up Isaac's location and had a bounty on their lives right up until the arrival of the Bretheren Moons. He looks up to Isaac's example, but is soft spoken enough that the Engineer can easily order him to back down if he gets to be too much. He's not used to the power he holds, and the courage he showed standing up to Danik was a first for him. But given time, he could become a strong and stubborn leader.
Lucas - Movie star, stunt pilot, and daredevil camera man, when the Moons hit he was working on a documentary about the local villagers living in the Marker's shadow for generations. He is extremely dexterous with kinesis and small gravity tethers, capable of using them to get footage normally too dangerous to attempt. He used his expertise to save the villagers when the bretheren moons showed up and his charisma to get them accepted onto the Dunkirk with their animals and several samples of crops in tow. Thanks to him, in a decade or two, sheepsmilk and mutton will be viable forms of sustenance for the Dunkirk's population. He goes out of his way and into potentially serious danger to get samples of exotic or little known food plants or animals, and once used his ship's tether and mounted stasis unit to secure and transport the bristlecone pine called "Methusula" to the Dunkirk, along with a large section of rock beneath it containing valueable insect and microbial specimens and a large turkey buzzard nest with its inhabitants still inside. He holds the record for most Necromorph Nests destroyed via his customized gunship. He now acts as protector, translator and advocate for the Mayan descended villagers aboard the Dunkirk. The villagers are extremely valuable to the gene bank aboard the Dunkirk, as living in the Marker's shadow has given thim a higher than average resistance to the Marker.
Marie - still haven't fully refined her personality and character, she's supposed to be a Botanist turned fiber artist that was a minor member of Tideman's research project, studying the Marker's effects on plant life, when one of the smaller markers caused her to develop a weaker, managable version of Isaac's dementia. Tideman forced her to retire as a result, and she lived under monitoring until Haven took her into the community he was building in the Titan ruins. The community is overrun currently by Necromorphs as a result of the Moon's arrival, having constituted themselves from frozen organic matter left behind after the previous outbreak. However they found an empty colony, Doctor Locke had already taken the colony in as part of the Dunkirk's colonial venture.

Unitology reminds me of Scientology, especially the money and secrets. Space Scientology!

Unitologists are inspired by Scientology according to the devs although they did make sure to change that stance because Scientology tend to sue people of "wrongly" interpreting their faith.
