Great review! I own a Remington sps that has been customized along with a Ruger American predator gen1 that has also been customized. Both are absolute joys to sit behind and are both are super easy to modify!
A new Remington will have 5 R rifling & a timney stock trigger. I bought a new 700 bdl 308 & it’s great quality. Tighter tolerances, square action, deep bluing, fit & finish are excellent along with the Timney. Keep in mind I own A, B, & C prefixes in older 700’s & the new ones are very nice!
Thanks for your nice info-clip and yes, I'm a Ruger guy since I like their firearms price & quality wise. I have just purchased two of the Gen2 as well as a 20" SFAR and the only thing I may change is the very loud muzzle brake on the .308 Gen2 since I use it for hunting. Take care, stay warm up there and shoot safe!
Thank you for the review and comparison. At the price point, the Ruger Gen II is very intriguing with the fluted barrel and adjustable comb. I understand what you are saying about the Remington 700 not having a free-floated barrel. Remington was very committed to the contact between stock and barrel at the tip. I ordered a couple rifles from the Remington Custom Shop in Sturgis, S.D. (before the bankruptcy) and they were not free-floated. I was shocked. Fortunately, they shoot lights out. All the best.
We got a ruger gen 2 in 204 ruger for $585 out the door with ffl fee and taxes. For the money its awesome. My mom needed something to shoot with very little recoil. It actually shoots great with a nice trigger.
Thank you Vernon. I incline to your way of thinking with these two rifles, although … in some situations, an internal magazine is the better choice, especially where it is practical to use two piece bases for the scope ring-mounts.
true, a a true hunting rifle yes! a flush mag is best walking through the bush, but at the same time a 2 piece mount is best for thoughs types of rifles.
I have a Rem 700, .223, 26” barrel. It drives tacks. Couldn’t stand the bolt handle so my machinist fabricated a tactical bolt handle for me. I added a Timney, Calvin Elite trigger. The bolt face was machined by GreTan Rifles and a firing pin bushing was added. It sits in an Oryx Chassis. So you can see, the best part of the factory rifle was the barrel :-)
i think i would buy the ruger american before the remington . yea the remington is good, but the ruger offers more for the money and it looks cool to. thanks for making the review
If you want to modify and upgrade your rifle the Remington has more options. Boyds have great stocks for both rifles, but for other upgrades Remington has more options. If you are wanting savings and are not going to modify the rifles the Ruger is the way to go. With the savings you can put it towards a better scope.
the new ruger gen2 is a great rifle. when i test them i use only one or 2 scopes. easy to zero! thanks for the comment and please dont forget to subscribe! thanks again
IMO if you want something to throw an optic on and a sling for hunting i would go with the ruger. if you want a rifle you can build off of I would go with the R700. I know remington came a long way from there safety/trigger problems that caused a huge amount of problems and lawsuits but unfortunately for me i would swap the trigger to a timney. which i have done to my R700 aac-sd.
See alot of comments about Tikka. Ruger gen ii is about $170-$200 cheaper than the cheapest Tikka. That is for a base T3 Lite, with no barrel fluting or threaded muzzle. It does include a dull, cheap black stock for that extra money. I've had two Tikkas and they are a great rifle, but you can't beat this new Ruger for the money. I am about sold on getting one now, but I think I am going to opt for the Predator version to get the extra 2 inches of barrel length. IMO
Haven't seen the predator version yet, waiting to find one. Had a hard time finding this one. And I agree, thanks for the comment and please don't forget to subscribe
I had the gen 1s and thought they were decent, although the feeding was subpar, better than the savage axis, but still subpar. I hear these new ones feed like a charm.
My very first center fire rifle was a Remington 700, 270 caliber, tack driver, but the ruger does catch my interest, their both excellent deer rifles, but do they make the ruger with a wood stock option?, I'm not a fan of plastic stocks on a rifle, it's gotta be wood stock or the deals off, lol, it's just my personal preference ,shakyjake out.
I recently purchased a Remington 700 sps, 22 inch barrel with Magpul Hunter stock in 6.5 creed for 756.00 from Bud's Guns. It shoots .5 M.O.A. all day long and that creep in the trigger is so suttle, you really have to be paying attention to even feel it. It was obvious you favored the savage from the beginning from the way you spoke about each gun. I also own a Savage model 11 in .308. It shoots good groups but not like the 700 does.
thats not a savage its the ruger. i dont favour one or the other. both have a creepy trigger. and that was mentioned in the video. i find the remington is more heavier, which would make it, a good range rifle, but the ruger would be more of a hunting rifle. thats what the comparison was geared too. as in the video, as i said. either one is a good rifle, for certain things. thanks for the comment. and no i dont favour one over the other.
Why do so many people like bergara. There terrible design and built bolts, and terrible welds. They have good barrels but I never been impressed with em. And there heavier then a dead minister
I have a tikka and a ruger gen 2 and the Tikka trigger is unbeatable but if you get the Ruger you really get a comparable gun and two opportunities to support American companies, Ruger and Timney

All the complaints with a 700 that hasn’t changed in YEARS. Top loading is way better because you cannot lose magazines. The bolt throw is literally a learning curve. I happen to love the 90 degree bolt throw. And lastly you can do anything to a 700. A Ruger is pretty much a Ruger and not much can change and it’s not worth changing. Again depends what you want. But the things people complain about is just plain annoying. Most of the stuff does not matter whatsoever. How the gun shoots is what counts and the 700s almost always shoot. I guess if you spend more time comparing your gun features to other folks' guns, you probably "have to upgrade". If you see it as a tool for hunting, either will probably do what you need. You rarely get a 2nd shot if you're a deer hunter.
