Mountain Rifles really show who or who isn't a good shooter or doesn't use consistent good shooting techniques. They can be very unforgiving. OTOH, if you match up a load that the rifle loves, you can possibly end up with a nail driver of a mountain rifle. I shoot an off the shelf (not modified) Kimber Mountain Ascent in .300 Win Short Mag and a Q suppressor using a home load of an 180GR Nosler Accubond. It shoots a .221 group at 100 on a sled. I 100% know that if I miss, it's me and not the rifle, the scope, or the ammo. If you end up liking the rifle, get in to reloading. Factory ammo is flakey and not very consistent.

You are absolutely correct. I only have hunting rifles, and factory ammo is pretty finicky. I have handloaded for some rifles, and they shoot awesome. I just wish I had more time to do it to all my rifles 😅
I'm not the most accurate shooter, but I can usually hold my own. I'll have a follow up video with this rifle once I have time to get to it.

Nice job! I agree cerakote or stainless makes a huge difference, especially when you're out and about. And I agree, the advantages of the CVA make it well worth an extra 100! After so many years of synthetic stocks, hard to believe Ruger is still going with the flimsy!

When I buy a brand new gun I make sure you can slip a dollar bill between the barrel and the stock and I put at least 60 rounds through it before I reload for my guns. A simple stock change can make all the difference too.

I have one, but in 6.5 Grendel. Almost every thing is 1moa or less, almost all of the time. The 6.5 Grendel is known as a super accurate round anyway. Personally I am more than satisfied. Agreed the stock is not the best, but the trigger is very good, especially for hunting. To get better you will spend $900.00 or more. I bought ammo with my $300.00 . Also retorque like mentioned earlier.

I'm pretty skeptical of 7mm-08 factory loads; based on COAL and seat depths measurements that are kinda all over the board. I haven't put my hands on the Nosler ABs, but the Nosler 140 e-tips are the glaring exception to what I just said - those things are TIGHT and my rifle (Savage 16 LWH) loves them.
All that to say; I bet that rifle will shoot lights out with a decent handload, and I don't immediately blame the rifle for the factory ammo ~1-1.5 MOA.

Excellent review even for beginners. 👏
I like how you list whatever you are using even when you're actively in the field. 👍
Briefly, a review video can only capture so much, and it usually covers pre-thought features.
However, whenever you list your gear, viewers can actually see it in action, and some folks will tune in to certain features while others will zoom in on other features.
It's a sort of "dynamic" way of doing reviews that is effortless, and requires no extra work on your part.
Anyway, spectacularly done and honest as usual. 🙌

Nice video. I picked up a couple of Ruger American Gen II rifles a few weeks back, and the bolt isn't the smoothest out of the box, but lubricate it and cycle it a bunch and the action will become smooth. I noticed how smooth the floor models were in the store, no doubt from the the bolt being manipulated hundreds of times previously.
For those looking for utmost accuracy, I do believe the Ruger American needs a couple of mods: 1) an aftermarket trigger (I went with Timney at 2.5 lbs), and 2) a better stock or chassis. It's not so much that the factory stock is super flimsy, but the barrel channel is not quite wide enough in my opinion. It really could have used an extra millimeter or two on each side and the bottom of the channel to account for the slight flex when under load on a bipod, rest, or barricade. The good news is there are a bunch of aftermarket stock options.
All in all, it's a good entry level rifle. It's light weight, easy to handle, good for quick off-hand shots, and shoots well enough for what it is.

Great review. I have a Ruger American Preditor 6.5CM, Stainless barrel. I love the rifle. Agree with your list of "Must Haves" for any rifle. I have one more on my list and that is the magazines. I do not like hunting rifles with the mags protruding from the forearm. I like a flush magazine. Makes it way more easy to carry with mag flush as the that is where its most comfortable for to place my hand for carrying and as it is a hunting rifle, it will get carried a lot. Just my 2 cents.

A few additional thoughts. The Ruger American seems to lack accuracy in 7mm08 per some on the Facebook group. I suspect it is because they use a 1/8.5 twist over a more traditional 1/9.5 which most others use. I also would give the American a good cleaning and try it with no muzzle break as they can help or hurt and the concussion is annoying and not needed in smaller calibers. Also all gen ii Americans are cerakoted.

I love what you're doing with averaging 5 different 3 round groups! I think you would get a little more valid results if you shot all 15 rounds at the same target though.
If the first 1.5" group shot to the right and the second 1.5" group shot to the left then the overall group would be greater than 1.5". By taking the average of many small groups you will have quite a bit of error as opposed to shooting one large group (with breaks for cooling of course).

You’re not going to get the best accuracy jumping to different ammo types every 3 rounds. It’s best to test one ammo type at a time and do a light cleaning between ammo types. Also that barrel is not SS, it’s carbon steel and even though it’s cerakoted on the outside the bore and chamber can still rust in wet or humid environments without care.

Then fire the next round in the same manner, etc. That’ll give you more confidence that you minimized the effect of conditions on your testing. @codytaylor2194 with a browning, I'd likely have done the same thing. I love going to the range. I have the Ruger precision rifle coming in this week in 6.5 creed anyways. Now I'll have the American for hunting & the precision for target & competition. Plus I knew the ruger american would be accurate after it calmed down because what it was doing was throwing one shot and then stacking the other two on top of each other oftentimes in the same hole, so I knew after the barrel broke in I'd have great groups, and just like I thought, it's now consistent with factory ammo to .5 to .6 MOA.

good vid! KInda a shame, the gen 2 is a sexy looking rifle. I'd pay a bit more for a stiffer stock and a bit tighter groups (although, you'll easily kill a deer with a 2 moa rifle)... Performance is most important, but let's admit it, we're humans and a sexy presentation tickles us, and that spiral fluted barrel is a looker.

  • @SammyMoore-tg5gs
    @SammyMoore-tg5gs 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

Part of the issue here is that the groups are too small. I’d be interested to see all of the shots from the five 3-shot groups overlayed on each other. At that point, you’d have a 15 shot group that would approach giving you a statistically accurate cone of fire. Hornady did a few podcasts on this topic, and, while it’s statistics heavy, it’s very informative, same with Shoot2Hunt. Form goes over the topic in a number of Form Fridays, along with explaining how having a poor zero and wind deflection are much more influential on why we miss than the MOA precision of our rifles.
I’d say Gen II performed as one would expect from a Ruger American with the Nosler ammo, hovering right around 1 MOA for 15 shots. That’s pretty incredible. The feeding issue sucks, but I’d look to see if a bit of sanding on the feed ramps or the lips of the magazine can clean that up.

I'm not sure why hornady head spacing doesn't fit these guns in 7mm-08. But it feels almost like you are shooting the wrong bullet in the gun. I am switching to federal 120 grain bullets this year. Hey Kendell, thanks for the comment! Yes, but the thing is, the barrel length should not affect accuracy. It can, but it shouldn't. There are many 18" barrel rifles that are very accurate. It may very well be the case here, but I don't think it is the primary suspect.
