  • Dr. Elizabeth Stevens was a high-achieving psychiatrist in the U.S. Air Force. Her work came to an abrupt halt when she was debilitated by a traumatic brain injury and a series of other traumatic events which caused PTSD. In this conversation, Dr. Stevens offers hope to those who are bound by the pain of trauma and describes how spiritual healing was the turning point in her recovery.

Please pray for my children and me.
Depression, schizophrenia, anxiety disorder. Husband left, family doesn’t want to talk to us.
No access to a Cristian therapist.
May The Lord heal us, He is able.🙏

Hello, Maru. We were sorry to hear about the difficulties your family is facing. We have read through the petitions you shared with us concerning you and your children, and want you to know that our staff has brought them before the Lord during our time of devotions. We trust He will prove His faithfulness in these and in the many other situations where His intervention is so clearly needed.
For further help, we have counselors here at Focus who are available to talk with callers by phone to offer encouragement and guidance (at no cost). If you would like to speak with a caring individual, we invite you to call us at 1-855-771-HELP (4357) weekdays between 6:00 A.M. and 8:00 P.M. (MT). The Family Help Center staff member who answers the phone will arrange for a counselor to call you back. One of them will be in touch just as soon as they're able. May God lead you to the help you’re seeking.

This teaching is so needed in these days! I was 50 when the straw that broke the camel's back (through my church!) was placed on me and "suddenly" I had PTSD. Truly it had taken a lifetime of rapes, beatings, and other traumas that I had somehow managed to sort out and live through, finally adding up and demanding the attention that I had previously refused to give to them. It seems to be taking forever to heal, and no one (other than my paid female Christian therapist) understands.

I am sorry that it was the church that caused you to feel that way. Sometimes, people in the church are in church for their own healing as well. A lot of people are traumatized and have not dealt with their own issues. They think that going to church can heal them. Until something happens. I am glad that you are doing your therapy. We all need to heal. I do wish you well in your healing journey. Blessings!

I understand, I've spent years in Christian counseling for the same, one thing I learned bout church, be careful whom you allow in your heart and share your feelings with, make sure it's someone capable of empathy..

I lost my husband 6 years ago, loosing my best friend, my lifestyle and my life.
I’m saying this to say yes, losing the man you love hurts and is very lonely. Try not to be alone but find some friends. People will understand and love you.

I would live to hear a perspective on healing trauma in the body from a Biblical perspective. Our bodies hold onto stuff and then we get syndromes like chronic fatigue, headaches digestive problems fibromyalgia I find lots of stuff about it but there’s too much eastern mysticism and stuff that’s not biblical. . .

Dr.Stevens, as a psychiatrist, did you temporarily take medication to help with your mental state? If not how did you know you didn’t need it?

I lost my son and his girlfriend in a very traumatic way. I’m wondering how I can get this book and any other resources you may have. I do go to grief share and counseling. I do not have a Christian therapist because my insurance will not cover it.

🎉❤thank you for sharing. How does one handle spiritual principles of faith, confession of Jesus finished work and being authentic, valnurable talking about pain, trauma responses. What do the scriptures say. How do we talk about emotions, behavuours, that may be seen as wrong such as anger, greed(eating binge)

Wow! Easy for you to say. You absolutely do Not get it!
I am a Christian and have suffered for 20 years with this neurological/nervous system disorder. Try having PTSD from childhood abuse, then repeated trauma thru adult years. We have to fight for our sanity, fight to be stable and sane. High suicide rate for us as well as high rates of addiction. No picnic. As a strong person of faith I know I would not be alive w/out Jesus.

This is not an issue of salvation. This is an issue of redemption of the trauma and healing while on this earth. The pain can be very tangible and even blinding and you can still be saved- they are 2 greatly different things.
