    That is sweet, the wrap has tidied it up nicely..... Im loving this ebike weather. Ive just completed my first conversion, its so addictive. I think my next route is to get a good frame and piece it together over winter. Thanks for the great tips.....

    What a fantastic controller looks great and works so well and keeps cool I know you used to have heat problems with early controller but this one is a must have. Dashing around those county lanes and tracks who could resist that in this weather. That wrap looks super cool you put on the Ebike.
    Great video keep up the advice very informative.

    Hey Andy, thank you for putting these videos together. I am pretty new to ebikes so your videos have helped.
    What DC circuit breaker are you using?
    I have the Sabvoton 72150 but a 72v 20AH 50A battery (I took all the defaults after the hall test)..
    My circuit breaker (12V-110V DC Miniature Circuit Breaker, 60 Amp 1 Pole Battery Breaker Protector) seems to be tripping if I gun it in the 3rd assist. Any suggestions would be great?

    If I am an idiot and bought this elsewhere without the LCD screen - is there any way of purchasing the screen and getting it to work after the fact? Or, is special programming required?
    Thank you!

    • @andykirby
      @andykirby  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately you can’t add the screen without a lot of hassle. There’s a connector for the display and one on the controller which accesses the controllers MCU to give you all the readouts like voltage, power, assist levels etc.
      Other thing you could do is get a cycle analyst which is a really good display (but not colour)

    • @rossmanngroup
      @rossmanngroup 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think I might just go for it, and create some USB to something else connector I unplug from it for when I want to program it vs. use the display.
      Thank you so much!

    Hey Andy, I noticed that there are those cool looking cylindrical connectors for the brakes, display and throttle. If I wanted to wire up a different throttle with normal pin connectors, would that be possible? Also, how would you set up Regen braking? I've built a 1500w ebike and it's great, but I just want the power of the qs 205, but the sabvoton controller is really intimidating! You're awesome!

    Hi Andy, Great blogs and an awesome upgrade! I’m also thinking of using the new sabby upgrade on my next build. Bit worried I couldn’t see any way of attaching the controller to the underside of the frame as I won’t have room to fit it inside the new frame. Are there any attachment holes on the controller? I remember you got the last ones cut off.

    • @andykirby
      @andykirby  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yeah it needs some thinking about. The controller is quite wide with the tabs on (the ones I got cut off) but with those left on it does give you a way of mounting it.

    Hi Andy many thanks for the reply to my earlier questions. I'm building a bike like yours with an 8000w hub motor. What's the biggest size battery that I can fit in the frame. Ie series and in parallel. Many thanks Brian

    • @andykirby
      @andykirby  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oooh now there’s a question! The common size is 20S10P of 18650s, this leaves enough space for good packing and a Sabvoton 72150 controller. You could fit more in there if you were really clever with the pack design but you are always restricted to the way 18650 packs are configured. 8000W continuous requires a VERY solid battery pack design with at least 10mm x 0.10 nickel cell interconnects. I am currently planning a new high power battery build using 26650s and will be covering this in an upcoming series! Stay tuned!

    Hi mate looking to buy the 60amp kit off your website, will this be ok for a 1000w hub bafang motor? It has the small 9 pin motor conecter. currently has 48v battery im going to upgrade to a 52volt. Has a silly 22amp controller right now, with no shunt to perform shunt mod

    What to do if the motor runs in reverse ? I got the same controller and it doesn't have a reverse wire. It passed the hall test it just goes backwards, its orientated correctly with the brake disc on the left side, I don't think I mixed up the wire colors... tried swapping 2 phase wires it didn't help, it just wont go like that.

    How's it going..
    I have a 72/150A controller with the TFT750 display running a 5000W Risun motor..
    When I turn the throttle, it goes one speed until half throttle then goes a higher speed, and stays that speed from mid to full throttle..
    How do I set it up so the speed increases gradually as I twist the throttle a bit at a time?
    I am using the android app on my phone to access the parameters menu..
    Thanks..

  • @beyondfossil
    @beyondfossil 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Anyone know why the wheel settings shown at 15:08 are so simplified?
    Those few wheel size presets will likely *not* match the actual size tire. The preset cannot know the actual tire thickness which varies by user and will greatly affect the speedometer & odometer calculations. Other ESCs allow setting the wheel size to the nearest centimeter just with a simple up/down clicker. Small inaccuracies in the wheel size will cause the ESC to calculate quite incorrect speeds and thus distances will be off as well.
    I am really perplexed at this over simplification of this crucial configuration parameter.

  • @HandyC
    @HandyC 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Presumably the battery pack is a lot heavier than the controller? Any reason you haven't tried to put the controller under the top surface of the box and the battery in the base of the box where you currently have the controller... Better weight distribution??

  • @TheFootbaldd
    @TheFootbaldd 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Did you say what kind of range you are getting these days? When you are at wide open throttle what kind of voltage sag are you seeing also?
    I finished my setup and have put a 150 miles on it so far. I got 42 miles out of 25Ah on my last ride. I have the low voltage cutback coming in a little too soon at 3.3-3.4Vpc but I can easily get 50 miles of mixed riding with no regen at an average of 30-35mph if I use 30Ah of my 36Ah pack.
    I have no limits on power other than motor temp, and low voltage, but I find it really hard to not just mash the throttle every chance I get. With my suspension and 19" mx wheels it feels great at speed. 30% flux weakening is enough to get me to 55mph.
    I also wanted to setup off throttle regen, but it seems that will be a bit more complex to setup than I first thought.
    I finally found a 100v supply 12v 25a output power supply, so I need to install my lights soon, and I need to figure out how I am going to control regen.
    I have the programming mostly dialed in now, and the ASI controller will let me pull 8kW/93A wide open. I would like to upgrade to the BAC4000 so that I can pull 150 battery amps, but there is no way the Crystalyte crown will eat that without choking.

  • @AshKirby

    Just a heads up with soldering rather than crimping connectors ... I was always told that it was a bad idea as with large loads the heat can actually melt the solder (especially on a high amp DC load like this!) and so crimping with a ratchet tool is actually more secure

    • @DriZ01
      @DriZ01 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is impossible when the proper wire-gauges are implemented: The reason a wire heats up, is due to it's resistance.
      Solder has a melting point of at least 180 degrees Celsius, which is generally higher than a wires insulation can handle.
      A wire can heat up to those temperatures when it's gauge is way too small, or when there's a continuous short in a high energy circuit.
      If that would happen, the whole system would short out due to the insulation melting, (eg the wire would fail) before the solder has a change to melt.
      Though it's unlikely a wire would fail, as quality e-bikes are usually equipped with a fuse.

    • @johnsherry6021
      @johnsherry6021 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are getting hot enough to melt solder then your wire is too small.

    • @srichard8181
      @srichard8181 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you are running 72V, it won't work if your battery is over 78V (it's to protect the display from the high regen voltage). Once your voltages drops to below 78V it should kick in if you have the right settings.

  • @dav1dbone
    @dav1dbone 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    can you do a video on regen, some things i'd like to know, does it give a significant addition to range, does it degrade the battery, if so, (something I was contemplating) switch regen to charge a secondary battery and when primary pack has cut out switch over to secondary and vice versa?

    • @andykirby
      @andykirby  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would work to an extent but you might as well put the power back into your main battery and save yourself the hassle of having high power relays to handle the extra battery. You could use the space better by just adding a bigger battery.
      Regen produces power when you brake or coast. It will never be a lot of power unless your rolling down a mountain but it can be useful.
      If you could use the regen power to charge a super capacitor though you might be on to something! Hmmm you got me thinking now!!!

    • @dav1dbone
      @dav1dbone 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Using a supercap would be amazing, it would be good to have a separate regen system for times when you have to slow down or stop for stupid things like people/dogs in the way, or at junctions or going down hills where there is no run off and you loose all your speed/energy to heat in the brakes, to then pull the stored power out again to get back up to speed, could have a separate hub motor on the front wheel for this purpose.
      On a side note, I had a Chinese ebike which was a DC hub motor and it can work as a generator as well as a motor.

      Yes that’s correct, you shouldn’t have it when your battery is fully charged or near fully charged as you can damage your battery. It sounds correct.

      Thanks mate, 0 is usually the safety mode, a bit like neutral in a car... useful if you want to walk the bike without the fear it will fly off and hit someone if you catch the throttle.

    so i had a lot of probems with my display, now i figure out that my new sollution works, but i didn´t drive it jet.
    the display works now with 48v because it´s only made for max 85V
    i hope Andy you read this and i get an answer for my question:
    will the brake from the controller charge the battery if the display shows only the 48V but the controller run at 88V?

    • @srichard8181
      @srichard8181 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the display is not really made for 72V nominal battery, so they limit the regen to protect the display. I found that regen would only work when battery dropped to 78V (88V-10V). I tried to return it and couldn't get them to accept their lack of claimed performance.

    Hi Andy, does the Sabvaton only work from 72v and up or can they run on lower voltages? I'll get into trouble with that much voltage,...... All the best Charles.

    • @andykirby

      Hi Charles yeah they work from 36-90V so ideal for all the common pack voltages.👍

      Can you do me a favour? Will you check with the vendour if the controler has a line for switching the lights on and off VIA the controller, the reason I ask is that I physicaly had to make that for my kt controller, it also has a display light that is supposed to switch the lights on and off but it did not so I would like to have that built in with it from the factory if possible. Thanks Andy. Regards Cheers.

    Excellent! This ESC has got me very interested in doing an upgrade of my buggy Chinese Letli ESC. Letli has a nice LCD display and might even look better than even Sabvoton's LCD display but Letli ESC software is buggy.
    I'm particularly interested in the Sabvoton ESC's "field weakening" technology. This technology can boost the top speed of the motor right? Anyone know what kind of percentage speed boost we can expect with this? 5%? 10%? 15%?
    I've got a 72V 5000W e-bike setup with a powerful 18-cell LIPO battery array. These LIPO batteries don't even sweat the approx 60A draw for 43mph top speed on my 18" moto style wheels. My 10C LIPO setup batteries are spec'd at over 200A output. I do not know the KV of my 5000W motor. Maybe 14KV to 20KV based on rough calculations.
    If I'm hitting 43mph now, would 50mph be out of the question? That is a 16.2% speed increase. Ideally I'd like to be able to hit 60mph for more "speed on reserve" which would be safer for these mean California streets!

    i have same controller as you but the older version im useing a 72v battery 20amp hour for some reson 2 and speed if full throttle go up the hill battery cuts any help

    • @andykirby
      @andykirby  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it’s completely cutting out and there’s no lights on the controller it will be the the BMS in the battery cutting power because you are pulling too many amps going up hill. You need to set your controller to match the specification of your battery. Don’t exceed the rated max power of the battery. (Usually batteries have an amp rating)

      @mohsanali999 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      andy kirby yea it turns off

    • @andykirby
      @andykirby  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try finding out what cells are inside and their configuration. You need to check the settings on the controller to see what the max battery current is set to, it might be too high for the battery. Try reducing it and see if the battery stops cutting out.

    you can use a capacitor inline with the batteries to stop huge voltage sag on the batteries and improve responsiveness

    • @andykirby

      Yeah been thinking that, would need a pretty big one (or bank of supercapacitors) to absorb that amount current!

      Sabvoton actually make a higher voltage controller called a 96120. It's capable of handling the voltage you mentioned upto 120a continuous
