I have seen many battery making videos. this one being one of the most safety oriented ones. others use really unsafe methods of connecting the cells, ignoring the possibility of error and so on. thank you so much for a good video!

I am planning on building a battery for a Viking Tandom Tadpole Trike my son and I built a few years ago. This battery with supply power for a Bafang 52v 1000 watt Mid Drive Motor I intent to purchase to complete our project. Your videos are highly informative as I am sure your books are even more so. Thanks for all you do for the DYI world.

Hi Micah, I cant thank you enough, in 6 months time I went from total newbie not understanding a thing to a competent person ready to build my own ebike from scratch. Between this channel and EbikeSchool, your book and Vruzend there was enough material to keep me busy interested and learning for days upon end, and I enjoyed every bit of it and still at it.
There is one subject that keeps eluding me and that is controllers, I dont know if you had that covered already on your channel I couldnt find it and I would love to learn a bit more about that.
And while on the subject, what are the chances of you developing and offering a product like that for sale?
    Thank you.

Hello Lynda, I'm a newbee to this thread and everything still looks like magic to me.
I am amazed at your recorded successes. I wrote to the presenter but have not heard from him.
Can I buy one sample of your own build 72V battery to help me "step by step" in studying the procedure as a newbee. Also,
where can I buy all the required parts from? Where store sells them? If you send me your phone number I can also call you.
My name is "Bill", I'm in New York and my email is cctvwholesaler@gmail.com
      Thank you.

@@D_Onibokun the only good way to learn about building battery packs is to buy his book, it is by far the cheapest, shortest and most safe way of learning ALL you need to know about lithium packs. It covers absolutely everything, from basics of lithium chemistries and different types to sourcing, ratings, building and construction methods, management, connections, charging, everything and anything to do with lithium batteries is covered in that book. Cheap too, best 20 dollars you will ever spend. Book is "diy lithium batteries, how to build your own battery packs" by Micah Toll , available on amazon, he has a couple of other good books too.
Dont know what parts you are looking for but plenty of websites around the world sell lithium cells, one of them is vruzend.com or co.uk and they also sell some other great stuff like assembly kits for builings complete packs, bms, chargers etc. Read that book and watch few of the uploads on this channel and you will have no problem understanding where and what you want to do. Research and discovery is the next best part of the journey besides building, for me at least.

MJ1's are not high drain cells by any stretch. Also, with this hexagonal packing scheme, the batteries near the center of the pack will get a lot hotter than those on the outside. That's of course dependant on how much power is charged or discharged, though.

Gloves and the plastic cover while welding can save you a BAD burn so listen to him! I put the nickel strip on the wrong cell once and burned my finger almost down to the bone cause with electric burns you won't notice it till a couple seconds after its too late. Just be careful. Hola Micah,
Merry Christmas to you and yours, I've made it just under the wire (11:27PM 12-25-19).
Glad to see you back, healthy, wealthy and having fun.
    I have 3 words;eHONDA eHONDA eHONDA!!!!!
Really want to see this project's progress. This video is a great continuation and contribution. I'm more excited now than before!!.I don't like the look, or how NOT nimble they are, but for $500, I couldn't pass up an eDrift Fat Tire Scooter. It needs a larger pack than the 60V 10ah Li-Ion it has at the moment, so this video may be instrumental. Do you have any thoughts on overvolting that eBike's 1500W Brushless motor's speed controller?
BTW; something I've been doing to my 57V (soon to be 61V) "Vruzend" packs, since I live in So. Cal. ie the Mojave Desert, is NOT completely sealing the battery packs I build. I leave 2 sides open, so there is airflow through the pack. On my little 32mph 750W Brushed Motor CURRIE Schwinn "TESLA" eScooter (stock was 36V/15mph), I also drill out/swiss cheese the bottom floor of the battery case, so air can get up into the pack and add even more cooling. Even in the 90-100 degree temps that I've run my eBike packs in this last summer, none got over ambient temp and my packs are as strong now as when I built them.
Just a tip that I hope may help for those of you in hot climates.
Now, heat shrink is cheap, so for this cold(er) time of year it's easy to seal those battery pack sides up & the holes in the battery tray and allow the packs temp to stay inside to help keep the pack warm as well.
Then, just cut the sides back out for summer and only do the reseal job once a year.
Thanks in advance.CheersBoots LangleyLa Mesa, ca.PS; Hey, I have a decent Resume myself;Mechanical Design & Machine Drafting (2 yr Tech School Degree), a lifetime of Automotive/Motorcycle Service, Repair & Restorations/ Racing , including several years as a Technical Editor (Cordura Publications/ Mitchell Auto & Truck Repair Manuals). Thanks Micah, I have 3 not working, good, nearly new ebike batteries: (52v15ah, 52v14ah, 36v8ah) plus a few small packs for a few more cells, and a spot welder, i want to combine my cells/packs to get a 72v battery for a new upgrade to an old 2014 A2B Alva+ with the 24" MXUS 3kw kit. what should i have, or do, to best build my battery. As far as shaping it, mainly, the original battery on these bikes wrapped around a beautiful strut under the rear rack, so if i could shape it to do that again that would be optimum.

@@MrNobody_1618 first of all, you need to consider the basic cost of materials and battery cells. Then the manhours to build it, and then the final manufacturing that ensures minimal hazards for the user once they install the battery to an appliance. When you do it yourself you can jsut jerry rig whatever idiotic bomb you desire, but as an actual industry supplier you need to achieve certain safety standards. This all costs a ton of money, especially when you aren't a mass producing manufacturer. Price always escalates exponentially when you go up in size and complexity per unit.

      The battery voltage rating is:
      • 14s*4.2Vmax= 58.8Vmax
      • 14s*3.6Vnom= 50.4Vmax
      • 14s*2.5Vmin= 35Vmin
      The battery current rating is:
      • 2P*10A=20A
      Power (W)/Energy (V)=Current (A)
      • 1,500W/58.8Vmax)=25.5A
      • 1,500W/50.4Vnom)=29.8A
      • 1,500W/35Vmin)=42.8A
The 14S/30A BMS rating is 50.4Vnom*30A=1,512W
To put it simply, you've connected a load greater than the system rating. Especially considering that electrical circuits are typically specified with a 25% safety margin. Yours has almost none.
Not all Battery Management Systems are created equal. While the BMS is _rated_ at 30A, it may not be up to pumping that much power on a continuous basis. Most likely, the BMS is disconnecting on over current.
What's unseen is how your batteries are being damaged. They may be *rated* at 10A, however they're *capable* of discharging at higher rates, up to and including that of a dead short. When goosing the throttle to full power, depending on state-of-charge, you're pulling between 25.5A and 42.8A from a pack rated at only 20A.
This generates a lot of heat, and heat does two things: If there's enough of it for a sufficient duration, there will be fire. However, without fire, the life of the cells is being drastically shortened.
      You have two choices:
*Option A:* Decrease the motor power rating by governing it down, or replacing it with a smaller motor.
*Option B:* Go to a 3P or 4P pack, as well as a 50A BMS.
Of course, you could always keep your "foot off the gas", so to speak.
      Best of luck.

TY for another video . You say cell must be at the same V b4 assembly ; getting 00's cell at exactly the same V is ideal but unlikely so what is a range that is acceptable 25mv ? the cell i have purchased have 3.226v-3.236 ATM , it's going to be a couple weeks b4 i have the missing hardware and assemble the pack , i will mesure them again then , that will also tell me if the $ i spent was worth them , cheers & ride safe

Hi. Thanks for this great tutorial video.
I was wondering if its easier to build what you did here using 9v batteries. What are the obstacles that you will come across with building a pack with 9v batteries?

Wow I have no idea how I ended up here, but that was pretty entertaining. Im used to only using 1 18650 cell in flashlights. Now to see so many all wired up together was cool!

    I have a 48v 1000w rear motor hub in which I'm using 60v30a(16s10p) to
push it. The problem is that it's getting hot and, I guess, the magnets
are swelling up(expanding) and causing the motor to seize up. Once it
cools it will spin again. What's going on? Great vids by the way

Looks like you tore some of the battery protective casings when inserting them in the holders seen middle of battery around 3:00 of video the heat shrink is all wrinkled. I am thinking this might be a potential failure point if the heat shrink fails and have some leakage. the rest of the steps seem well done. cool project! good work

Shouldn't the BMS be outside of the battery pack? won't shrinkwrapping it in with the batteries over-heat it? I'm new to the channel and don't know how hot these will get. Looks cool though. I was considering buying a Zero FX this summer but now I'm reconsidering.

Question. New to doing packs. You do series first, then you do parallel. Why not do parallel, then connect the parallel blocks in series? Wouldn't that be less welding as you would only have 2 connection from block to block. To me, it looks like you built 140 cells in series, what am I missing :)

I am brand new at DIY lithium battery building. I’m still quite confused about most aspects of the process. I think I need to get a hold of your book on the subject. Thank you for how well you present information.

One thing that scares me about lithium is its instability at high (but not impossible) temperatures, under the sun or while charging. There's some precaution to add to avoid any danger?

Great Video, To the point & detailed, & Skipping the waffle that other people include.
Weight of completed battery? is it 12kg?
Why do you use Cris-Cross of nickel strips? One wider nickel strip could weld to 24 batteries ( or 10 & 14) , thus halving the number of spot welds? Minute 6.38 in the first row of 2nd half pack, there are 2 groups of 3 cells , a change from the general pattern . Is there a reason?

Also If you are ever considering building one of these and cutting corners and just soldering with a $12 iron and wire, think again. When you finally get the connections right after 14 hours of struggling they will come apart during your travels and you will kick yourself, have to rip the whole battery open and redo until you finally just get fed up and buy a spot welder. Take it from me I tried to cut corners and it cost me days of extra work and extreme frustration. Time is as important as money when building these things

What about heat dissipation? And short protection? You know if something goes wrong that’s allot of burn time there. Heat shrink is nice but not puncture proof. Obviously you are experienced with battery packs and I’m a noob. So could you explain your thought process on safety please.

I would be uncomfortable with those wired connections between the top and bottom face of the pack resting directly against the inner folded connection strip. If one of those wires rubs out from the vibration, wouldn't it short across both layers of cells?

Bought your ebike book. Watched many of your videios. Liked & subscribed and have really learned a lot. Building folded 36V/20.4AH/10S6p ebike battery to convert my existing mountain bike to front drive ebike. One question on this video. The white insulated wire you used as parallel connector near end looks like dual 14 Gauge lamp cord. Shouldn't it be 10-12 gauge for the amount of current your pack is going to deliver?

A good tip to customize blue shrinking tube is that you can glue them together with superglue to create really big tubes or custom shapes. Note that the superglue won't release when hot air is applied l. Happy building!

LG MJ1 cells go for around 5 dollars. 240 cells is 1200 dollars. If you get 1000 charge cycles that's 1.20 dollars per charge. Those old Hondas get very high mileage and range isn't an issue because of gas stations. Is there a goal beyond making an electric motorcycle?
