    Great video. I used to travel on an 883 years ago. My set up? Harley detachable windshield, Harley detachable sissy bar with rack, and a nice sized bag for over the sissy bar. Not only was it ideal for me, I did weekends with passenger and the bike was ideal. I’m 50 now, and I’ve owned 5 Harleys over the years. Three were Sportsters, one Electra Glide, and my current Super Glide. My ‘99 883 was my favorite. Do not pay any attention to nay sayers. They are excellent, adaptable motorcycles with lots of character. Enjoy and be safe!

      Your set up is perfect. The 883 is a fun challenge long distance. I'm definitely going to step up into a bagger someday, but my 883 will always be in my stable! Ride safe, my friend!

    Great video. Good tips. I've taken many road trips on my 883. Here's a few tips that work for me that you might consider.
    1. Bigger windshield. Now, I don't like having a windshield on my bike ALL the time, so I got the HD quick-release shield in the largest size. Top quality, excellent coverage and protection. Totally solid mounting. And comes off when it's super hot so I can feel the breeze, and doesn't use any ugly docking hardware that remains on the bike.
    2. One large duffle bag for all the gear. It is SO MUCH EASIER to secure one big bag as opposed to trying to attach several smaller bags! More secure with way less time and hassle to get loaded up. Augment the big duffle with one small tank bag or backpack for quick access to essentials such as rainsuit, camera, water bottles, etc.
    3. Change the front pulley to 1 or 2 teeth larger to drop RPM at highway speeds. I love this modification the most for my bike. I went up 2 teeth on mine. No other changes required, and didn't need to change the belt. The pulley from the Harley dealer was only $60. It is surprisingly labor intensive to swap one, and if you're not an experienced mechanic well-equipped with tools, you'd probably be better off having a shop do this one for you. Still worth it! For my bike, 2 teeth gave me approximately 400 RPM drop @ 75 MPH. So much happier at that speed! Less vibration, mileage in the 50s, can easily pull higher speeds to keep up with the bigger bikes, and only a tiny bit less acceleration through the gears. Like I said, for me, totally worth it!
    4. Throttle rocker for the grip. This tiny little inexpensive clip-on part was a revelation for me. So much less fatigue after a long day on the highway! And I like it much better than the little factory throttle lock, which I now NEVER use. In town, I just take the rocker off my grip and clip it on my bars down by the riser.
    That's some stuff that works for me, and has made road trips easier and more enjoyable. Of course there's many more, but these are the biggies. I like your videos. Good quality. Keep em coming and be safe out there!

      I love comments like this. Not only is it well thought out, but it also helps me and everyone watching this video thinking of riding long distance with their Sportster. Thanks, man! Here are a few thoughts:
      1. I love the size of the Memphis Shades Del Rey. It keeps the wind off me where I need it: my chest and my head. A larger windshield may be better for a rider that sits taller on their Sportser. I'm 35" ass to the top of my head on my Iron. It's perfect for my sitting height and bike set-up. It's also quick release with subtle mounting hardware. I've got a review of it here: th-cam.com/video/AIEPCyM3NXc/w-d-xo.html
      2. Great Idea. Totally doing this with the Kuryakyn Momentum Vegabond bag. It's a huge bag that I think will work for the trip. Firsts thoughts review here: th-cam.com/video/pDPiBwuBGXg/w-d-xo.html
      3. This is really helpful info! I'm actually going to look into this. It seems like such a low cost for an good drop in RPMs at highway speeds.
      4. I got one about a month ago. It cost me only a buck off of eBay! I'm going to test it out on a long ride on Thursday.
      Thanks again for this comment! Super helpful!!!

    I just took my 48 for a 2,000 mile ride from LA to Mexico city. I was doing about 10 to 12 hrs of riding every day and by the time I would get to hotel I would be completely fine. My set up was very similar to yours and what truly made the difference was the windshield. I would add a tank bag helped out a lot as well. Why wouldn't you be able to do a long trip with a sporster? If you really want to be comfortable take a fucking car.

    • @GreatEgret
      @GreatEgret  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thats awesome, dude. Inspiration for sure. It'd be great to see pics or videos. Feel free to share any links here if you have some. That windshield is key! It may make my iron look like the dorkmobile, but I don't really care because I'm riding a f*cking motorcycle! I have a Cortech tank bag. I like it and have done a review of it. I lifted the tank up 1.5" and the tank bag get in the way now. I may lower it back down for the trip so I can use the tank bag.

    • @GreatEgret
      @GreatEgret  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That 3.3 gallon take was perfect. I never ran out of fuel during the 4500 mile trip. I stopped about every 115 to 130 miles. Which is perfect because after that long on any bike, you're going to want a break anyway.

    I also want to travel cross country, including route 66. I have a wicked red 2018 HD Tri Glide Ultra. It's most alluring features are the awesome seat, 6 gallon tank / 40+ mpg, cruise control, 6 cu ft of covered storage and windshield /faring. I can be very comfortable, have infrequent stops for fuel, great mileage, generous dry / secure storage space, the protection of a windshield and a fairing with gps, etc. Small changes made to protect the bike: rear lift, rear bumper, mud flaps; also a storage rack on the top touring pack. Definite suspension upgrade and probably brakes as well are first in line for upgrades. Your trip is very inspiring for me and I look forward to learning from you while i watch the whole route 66 series. Thank you for sharing your experience on this legendary route. God bless.

    I‘m not a big fan of sissy bar bags....
    They add the weight to an upper rear position where you won’t have it for a stable ride... That’s why I plan to attach touring sidecases to my Sportster. If you don’t like big bagger style cases add saddlebags for the heavier stuff and only keep lightweight things in your sissy bar bag.

    • @GreatEgret
      @GreatEgret  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check out my video during the trip titled "Why I don't use saddlebags" or something similar to that. I've ridden two wheels long distance for decades, from bicycles to motorcycles, and having the weight balanced in-line, rather than unbalanced on the side is not only cleaner looking, but safer to ride.

    If you get air into your ABS module, you will not be able to get it all out without actuating the ABS solenoids-which is why HD wants you to have it hooked up to the computer that actuates those solenoids during the bleeding process. As long as you are aware of where any air was let into the system in relation to those solenoids, and you know how to actuate those solenoids by applying the correct voltages, to the correct wire manually, then you should be able to bleed them yourself-but, it sounds like all you did was a standard bleed without regard to air in the ABS solenoids. The next best thing for you is to ride out and do some hard stops, till you feel your ABS solenoids modulating, or pulsing, then bleed your breaks. Do that procedure a few times to work all of the air out. Cool bike.

    • @GreatEgret
      @GreatEgret  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Good tips, brother. Super helpful. I won't advocate doing this for every rider with ABS, but I did a hard brake twice since bleeding and the ABS actuated both times.

    Those are cool mods, and a nice looking bike. I've had my sportster since '01, and still ride it a lot. I've ridden it from DFW to New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and once to L.A. to see some friends. The bike does great, never a problem in 20 years. It now has 86k miles on it and still running good but getting a bit tired. Will need a new top end soon. I don't ride with a windshield, but I do have a mustang seat and saddlebags, that I only install for the long trips. I think those crash bars/highway foot rests are nice, going to look into getting that. But in general, and even thought it's an old solid mount sportster, it's a fairly comfortable ride, even on long trips it's not bad at all.

    Great mods I gotta admit!
    Yet got one question with regards of swapping the new line of brakes...
    By bleeding the brakes, you mean emptying the whole front line from brake fluids and then get a longer line, install it, and then fill it up till air comes outta the system, right?
    And if you could please do link me up for the store you got the longer line from.
    Thanks man!

      Thanks man! I took the Route 66 trip last fall and I'm starting to review everything I used on the trip. That's right. You have to empty the front line to replace it. Then "bleed" the line until there is only brake fluid coming out. I should do a how-to videos on that process one of these days. I've done it a lot on various bikes.The line I bought was a used one off of a Harley 72. I found it on eBay. So it was a one-time sale.

      I don’t know what to tell you, brother. I’m pretty sure you put your complaint in the wrong complaint box. I don’t have any videos on risers nor have I ever used them. It’s likely not a popular search on TH-cam because they’re aren’t many videos on them.

    Hope you have a safe trip man... One question, I notice you haven’t moded out suspension... I have same year & model as you and my back hurts after a long ride. Do you plan to swap out your stock suspension?

    • @GreatEgret
      @GreatEgret  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      J.L. Molina Thanks, man! It's going to be a fun trip! Right now I don't plan to swap out the suspension. That could change, though. What I am going to do is change my tires to the Bridgestone Battlecruise H50s. They're supposed to give a more comfortable ride. Almost like new suspension. I haven't ridden them yet, so I don't know how true this might be, but I'll do a review of them for sure.

    • @JLMolina

      Great Egret hey Joe, since then do you still run with stock suspension? I rode my Iron 1200 across pacific coast highway in California with a windshield and upgraded seat. It was 100% doable but I’m wondering how much more of a difference new suspension would have on comfort

    • @GreatEgret

      I think the fisheye effect makes the back part of the seat look lower. Check out my long-term review I did where I talk about how amazing the Step-up was for the trip. No way I could have done it without that seat. Here's the link: th-cam.com/video/c6KJzUMA0Ug/w-d-xo.html

    What tires did you use? Harley tells me that the Scorchers are the only ones that can be used on my sportster but I didn't think that was true....I think they are just wanting to sell a certain tire.??

    • @GreatEgret
      @GreatEgret  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s definitely not true about the Scorchers and I changed them because they are TERRIBLE in the wet. I have Bridgestone Battlecruise H50s. I used them all along the Route 66 trip and put on over 15K miles before putting a new set on. I did a first thoughts video (link below). I’ll do a long-term review before spring.

    Looks like you've got it ready for the trip! Ya know, people can whatever they want about riding that sporty long distance, but the reality is that touring on a motorcycle has been around for a long, long time....even before all the comfy aftermarket things were available. Imagine a cross country trip on a pre 1970's bike!

I have a nice seat for commuting but i like to go and do 500+ miles in the weekend and my seat sucks for that! If you do route 66! When you hit Albuquerque! Head up the sandia mountain! Amazing ride and view! Breath taking!

    • @GreatEgret
      @GreatEgret  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, man! I'm going to check out your channel when I get the chance. Go with a handlebar that has knurling. The Chumps don't and it's annoying having to readjust them once per week. I'm going to to do a review of them soon. I'm a cheap sucker, so I bought a used takeoff brake line for a Harley 72 off of eBay for $30. That just barely gives me the length I need for the 8" chumps. Had that not been available I would have bought these: www.denniskirk.com/drag-specialties/front-extended-length-abs-black-vinyl-brake-line-kit-6-in-1741-3828.p1908831.prd/1908831.sku?gclid=CjwKCAjw7cDaBRBtEiwAsxprXS_O0FTbgdCE1LjLOpzOpk4CogL7EOYqER1Niky9g9waLNhUxUdhSxoCU80QAvD_BwE&ad=154650949570
      I may still get those because it would be better to have the proper length.
      I'm definitely going to look into Sandia mountain. Thanks for the tip!

    • @GreatEgret
      @GreatEgret  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @kyndryd spyryt It doesn't have a fuel gauge. It does have a low fuel light that comes on when you have one gallon of fuel left. Depending on your riding style that gives you about 45-50 miles to get to a fuel station. On long trips, I usually fill up every 100 miles or so.

    Fighter jets only require a bucket and eyeballs to bleed their brake systems. Why does a v-twin motorcycle need a computer to do the same thing?

    • @GreatEgret
      @GreatEgret  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fighter jets don't have ABS and it's a simpler system than a road vehicle. A pilot uses the brakes once per trip. Whereas a rider will use their brakes hundreds of times per trip.
