    This series is good. I have 2 big twins and a Sportster. The Sportster is a pure motorcycle.

    I just found your channel because I bought my first Sportster 883 Iron and was checking mods. (I’ve had many bikes, first sporty though) Then I saw your trip suggestion. I like to ride long distance. Love this video. I’m originally from Central Illinois and you’ve taken me back home a bit. Thanks Mr Egret!

    Sweet, I toured my sporty last summer, 9 days, 3k miles or so, camped every night. I would do it again on my sporty. Just barely touched RT. 66 near Oklahoma and Paris TX.

      That must have been an amazing trip! The challenge is fun. Add camping only to mix and it becomes even more fun. I'll have some camping footage in future episodes. Thanks for watching man!

    I am viewing you channel for the first time and really enjoying it. I live right off Route 66 and pass the Gemini Giant most weekends on my way out towards the open country roads. Some people think they need a $27000 bagger to ride cross country which is ridiculous! Back in the day I toured all over the U.S on my 750 Honda super sport and met a guy riding his old beat up CB 350 Honda loaded to the gills with his gear riding from Ohio to Miami Beach, he rode beside me until I parted to the Florida keys. When my older brother returned home from the jungles of Vietnam the first thing he did was buy a 1968 Sportster XLCH, pack his duffle bag, strap it to his homemade sissy bar and rode across country to visit one of his army buddies in his recon unit. It’s GREAT to see you young guys with the same free and adventurous spirit!

    • @GreatEgret
      @GreatEgret  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Man! I love stories like this and I love that there are so many riders out there that still feel having an expensive bagger is necessary to ride long distance and even around your neighborhood!

    • @paulhealey8221

      Great Egret Thanks for the comeback, I travel like you do, a travel bag strapped to my sissy bar on my 1993 Dyna EVO lowrider and it fits more items then fiberglass bags. I hope to ride out with you guys to the meet next year. I am from south Chicago.

    Chicago is home. Riding there is natural to me. Open roads are what are oddities to me! Funny, my first long trip to st louis Dwight, IL was my first stop. That gas station too.

    I was just there!!! Across from the Art Museum where Route 66 starts, was one of those bittersweet times for my life. I have always wanted to take the same ride, I’ve just never had the means. When I saw the sign, I was in awe. I stopped in my tracks, took a deep breath, and enjoyed the moment. Times and scenery change, but good ole’ Americana always happens to be there if you carefully look for it. Chicago drivers have my respect, they have the most controlled chaotic driving I’ve ever seen. Thank you for taking all of us on your journey sir!!

    Definitely a sin….I road from the West going east and ran into similar issues….but for the areas that you can ride….its amazing, hotel owners are just happy to see you…and will treat you like gold. Are their rooms modern, hell no, but there is just something about being in this historic road.
    For example, the Blue Swallow (Disney used the concept of this and Wigham motel (Kozy Kone) in the movie Cars) in NM. Amazing owners, brought out the hose, pale rags and soap to washout rides, even drive us to the local restaurant so we didn’t have to worry about driving. Just top shelf people! Will be returning.
    The kicker is…each room, has its own MC garage to store your bikes in.
    Met a bunch of fellas from the UK, they started in Chicago, like you, headed West…got to talking having a beer…mention that we’re head to Cadillac ranch …they said yeah we want to see that too…unfortunately, they had realized they already passed it…
    So the back tracked in their cager we were on our rides…the Brits were totally amazing at the size of our bikes…big V-Twins were rare in the UK…so when we offered for one of the them (obliviously the guy who had his MC license) there was just a smile that was not easily removed from this fellas face. Off we went.
    That’s the thing about riding these roads …EVERYONE we met we met were great, friendly, just truly an experience I will never forget….and will be back again soon. As there are always things you miss, usually cause you’re putting too many miles on each day…this time, will be keeping it to 300-400 miles/day.

    Such a great video. and on your iron 883. funny thing I have a 2014 Iron 883 and ride it everywhere. and funny you said on the video about a 2018 heritage. well I bought one in april. I love it - oh and I did not sell the 883. what ever you do don't sell it. just bite the bullet and keep it and get your next bike. the 883 is so nice to jump on and take off. just seems more fun to ride. I actually let me son ride the 883 now. it stays in my garage lol. still mine. :) like I told you I put the gauntlet on it. we are going to Daytona in October so it will be his first time of any distance on the 883. it will do anything you want and is super reliable. thanks for this great video. looking forward to the next piece of your trip. stay safe man. you are inspiring others.

    You changed the exhaust and the air filter. Therefore, you absolutely have to have your control unit adjusted at HD. Your mapping no longer fits and your motorcycle is getting too hot? New software will be installed and tuned to your engine. If you do that, you will have about 3 hp more and use less gas. Little tip from me. ;) PS: I am riding the same bike (Modell from 2019 with a Jykill & Hyde Exhaust) .. if you still riding it! ;)

      @GreatEgret  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s actually because it’s an air cooled bike that I was riding in traffic jams in Chicago. The slow pace didn’t allow the air to cool the engine enough. I have a Vance and Hines FP3 tuner. That thing is a dream and the bike runs amazingly after mapping it.

    Awesome vid Joe, you answered my question at the end as to how you're doing comfort wise on the Sportser. I'm wondering when you get back home if you would consider getting something more comfy for trips or long days. We've both said we'll always keep our Sportsers & I will but I'm thinking about something like a Heritage, Sport Glide, or Street Glide.

      @GreatEgret  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Jim! l'll have a lot more to say about using the Sporty for rides like this in future Route 66 episode. I'm definitely thinking about that 2018 Heritage. That would be the perfect bike for this ride.

    Wisconsin and Illinois have been the two states I’ve felt so unsafe ridding my bike. People don’t care and it feels like everyone is racing to get to their destination. Doing 20 over. Cutting people. Road raging and all much more makes it survival ridding rather than enjoyment riding.

    • @GreatEgret
      @GreatEgret  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, Chicago was rough. I feel pretty safe in Madison and most of the rest of the state. I was in Racine before I left for the trip. I'm not so sure about the Milwaukee area, though. I know you've had some bad eggs out on the road in that area.

    • @MrSokkermasta
      @MrSokkermasta 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great Egret Madison isn’t bad at all. Milwaukie and Racine are bad! Several times people merge onto me knowing I’m there. Can’t do much either when streets are full of potholes and construction everywhere. I’m happy to see you are out and on your trip! I can’t wait to see the rest of the videos!!!

      I’m from Chicago and ride aggressively because of it. I also don’t ever go to the city on my bike unless after rush hour but that in itself poses more problems (low visibility, drunk drivers) I prefer lower Illinois,Indiana and Michigan for more enjoyable riding

    • @MrSokkermasta

      Peter Zamudio i feel you!! The one time I went down to chi town for a ride I came close to get hit more times than I can count with both hands. When I do ride down there I’m always afraid that i will get pulled over since for me to get away from cagers have to do 15 to 20 over the limit. Just so I can have my own bubble of safety. And still have cars tailgate me and speed by me just to pass me. It’s sad because Chi town has some awesome places to visit.

      Dude, that would have been sweet! When I'm back in the area we need to plan a New Glarus ride. Truthfully, the wind in Texas made Chicago traffic seem tame. It'd be great to do a ride there as well!

    I was REALLY ready not to like this, thinking you were just another "iron butt" warrior, who was gonna show me fields of corn, wheat, soybeans, bushes, and briers. Whatever, as you speed down the road. But, NO!!!! You know how to share your ride with us. You know how to entertain us.
    You sorta remind me of a show I caught parts of on some forgotten cable channel, fifteen or more years ago. Two guys set out cross country, on a couple of 50cc mopeds. At a top speed of 35 M.P.H. they couldn't do too much zooming past anything. With no option not to, they were forced to share their journey. You are smart enough to.
    I'll look out for your next installment. Can't wait to you get to San Bernardino, then on to Foothills Blvd.
