Operations cost is simply the cost of running and maintaining the existing network. The network doesn’t just run by itself. Some of these functions are: servicing which is mostly reactive breakdown and scheduled preventative maintenance visits, hotline support, remote troubleshooting, planning, maintaining spare parts inventory, maintaining sufficient swap out chargers, paying the bills. One of the reasons why so many EV charging companies around the world have gone belly up and the high number of non operational chargers is they didn’t realise the nature of service contracts required for seamless operation of complex machinery.

    Installing new Superchargers requires:
    1) getting the land
    2) getting the permits
    3) getting the grid connection
    4) building the charger
    5) installation
    6) maintaining the network
    7) maintaining the location
    8) managing the location
Tesla excels at numbers 4, 5, and 6. A third party could do better at everything else. For example, power companies own a lot of land that could make excellent charger locations.

@richardlocke7264 I'm also a shareholder and am concerned about the firing of the whole supercharger team as well. The problem is that Elon has too much power. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Elon never planned to fire the whole supercharger team. He just wanted to cut costs across all departments. The problem was that Rebecca Tinucci pushed back. He lost his temper and just fired the whole supercharger team. Now that he's cooled off he is of course well aware that he needs the supercharger network. The thing that boggles my mind are all the Tesla Bulls and members of the cult who think because Elon fired the supercharger team that Tesla doesn't need the supercharger network any more. These are the same people that the day before he did this thought the supercharger network was Tesla's greatest asset worth hundreds of billions of dollars. Then Elon fires the team and they suddenly think it's worthless. Recently there were rumors that BP was going take over the network and they thought that was a great idea. Just imagine that. What a horror story. I constanly see people saying Tesla shouldn't be in the real estate and construction business. They generally do not own the land where they put the superchargers and all of the installation work is contracted out. The Electric Viking is one of few people that has opinions based on facts and not what the Deal Leader Elon says and does.

The "politics" is simple. The head of the supercharger team refused to fire a percentage her people, so he fired the whole team. That isn't a business decision, it's dominance. He said he wants everyone to fear losing their jobs.
Top execs quit and have posted about this. Musk simply doesn't believe anyone but Musk himself is indispensable. He's in ahole mode, and the more people tell him he's wrong the more he'll fire. That is abusive behavior and fing with loyal workers' lives.
And now who the hell is operating the supercharger project?
For the first time, I am questioning the actual purpose of having Musk "in charge". He's not, BTW. The board is too busy trying to keep him mentally stable to do THEIR jobs, which is overriding him.
Musk belongs at SpaceX, where this style of management works well. Not a company on the brink of true success.

They were supposed to be partnering with other vehicle manufacturers so they change over to NACS which would have most likely involved engineers input and assistance to mesh with Tesla. It also wasn’t just engineers but people handling the logistics side for those other manufacturers to onboard to NACS. Tom from State Of Charge who is an Elon fan but also has some great connections to key players said even they were desperately looking for answers because their Tesla SC contact was now gone. I think the truth will be revealed when we see if other manufacturers who said they were going to adopt NACS before the end of this year if they abandon or move forward with their plans for adoptation.

Once you've taken it through that, you scale back the workforce dramatically to only what you require to operate it.
