A lot of it has to do with stealing the materials. Thieves have ripped out my brother's home HVAC system three times. It is now enclosed in a metal cage.
A friend had her AC taken right out of her fenced backyard, so her new one had to have a cage as well
those are really stupid thieves, they make about 20 bucks for some hard work.
@@scottmcshannon6821 As someone who used to trade in a lot of copper when I was an electrician, depending on the price of copper it could be several hundred dollars if you took them all. enough to make it worthwhile for a criminal..
My sister and brother in law had ongoing problems with aluminum screens stolen during a time when the recycle price for aluminum was high. Some folks steal.
Thanks to George Soros, crime has been decriminalized.
I've been to an EV charging station and all of them were broken. None of the cables were cut but all of the ends were crushed. There's people who want to steal the copper and there's people who hate EVs.
"Why we can't have nice things". Carnage occurs whenever far fewer than 1 percent are that type of anti-social miscreant. Unattended technology of any type is likely to be vandalized
Perhaps it's the owners and the mandates that they truly hate ?

The real reason is that no one is paying for their crimes.
I found one charging station where someone had pulled the electrical connections out from inside the plug.
This is absolutely correct. It's copper thieves. Vandals, or Tesla haters would not take the cables with them.
Yea, Tesla haters wouldn’t be intelligent enough to monetize from their vandalism
Why would Musk haters not take the cables? Think about it, leaving the cables there just enables Tesla to reuse the plugs and recycle the cables.
@@simonpaine2347 Think about it , you're angry. Musk Haters prowling to sabotage Tesla equipment . Maybe you go out and vandalize I.C.E. cars ?

@@simonpaine2347 Lol, people have been stealing copper for a long long time. The fact that people think this is Tesla haters shows how stupid they are. I think Tesla is dumb shit, but I've also seen people steal copper from some pretty crazy places.
The number of times my commute into London by train got disrupted by jerks thieving cables to signalling equipment so they could sell the copper this is nothing new. What should happen, but won’t is massive fines on those dodgy scrap metal merchants that take stolen scrap metal!
this is NOT for copper, it would absolutely not make any sense. they would get pennies would have to cut 500 charger cables to make it worth anything. these are sabotage acts by some organization or entity
Hand out 50 year sentences like candy
Massive fines? Cant get blood out of a rock lol
Keep the cables energized with 480 volts! 💥

420 Volts! 😅
They need cameras at superchargers
I think that tesla should set up cameras at superchargers, not just to prevent such crimes. 2nd also to be able to determine the actual utilization of the superchargers - please remember that third-party brands can often block 2 superchargers for 1. And 3rd to prevent combustion engine drivers from misusing Superchargers as parking spaces.
@@ertzgdds It won't "prevent" those things, only document them.
You are talking about a state that changed a stoplight with a stop sign due to theft.
@@justinr9753 😢
The people stealing the copper arent going to care about cameras. Theyll use stolen cars or cars with no plates. Theyll wear masks or have someone vandalize the cameras before.
Thieves are the reason you will never see a gas station without cameras.
People aren't stealing gas at the station . They want cash, they are armed robbers.
@@mikewallace8087 people steal fuel all the time. Not every thief is an armed robber.
@@truebrit3670some people even tried to turn them into blazing time bombs
Yes, especially as modern Techno-Thieves are more often trying to put devices inside fuel station pumps to send them credit card account numbers and credentials to transfer funds into offshore accounts with. Armed robbery is old fashioned and high risk but Techno-Theft is covert with little to no personal interaction. If they find the reader later on when servicing the pump the Data Thieves are long gone and have already gotten their ROI for that disposable device.
Today a Fuel Islands Pumps are one of the places your more likely to have your credit or bank card data stolen.
Best!
@@oscarjohnson9156Not every station is that advanced.
They need to contact the recycling centers and prevent them from accepting the cable scrap from charging equipment. It can easily be identified and the recycling people are use to blocking stolen scrap.
They'll need to stop placing them in remote locations; with the current high copper prices, it's too tempting for thieves.
I think that will happen. Look for chargers to be located at restaurants, coffee shops, and convenience stores. Merchants will welcome chargers in their parking lots as it will bring in customers who will linger around for enough time to do some business.
I agree.
Install cameras and impose severe penalties.
Sure cameras seem like a good idea at first. But if the DAs aren't going to prosecute anyone, doesn't matter that you have them on camera lol
They need the Tesla BOT in Robo Cop mode :-)
Camera is invading privacy (lawyers are happy to,sue Tesla) and many states don’t prosecute theft less than US $1000. I live in California, there is no need to rob or steal anymore, people just walk into the store, pick what they want and walk out. So some stores have to lock up socks, ice cream and milk….or close the store. Oakland is retry much no supermarket left, so a local politician proposed if a store wants to close, it has to find another store to take over the location first, genius.
Penalty will be highway trash cleaning for 5 days,
Well, at the base of it you have vandalism, which is usually a misdemeanor. Then the monetary amount of the damages will easily elevate the vandalism to a felony. Then, if it was motivated by EV hatred, a good lawyer could elevate it into a hate crime. And I would really want to see the creation of a legal precedent for "hate crime: EV-targeting felony vandalism."
It's not about Tesla....it's about stealing the copper.
My wife's chevy Bolt had its portable charger stolen at her work....( California too).
Some of her co-workers recognized the homeless guy on CCTV....they tracked him down.....he admitted selling the charger for the copper wire.
Someone tried to steal live train power cables. He burned his arm off.
Can you keep the cables live so you are fried when cutting into? Like the subways third rail. Never touch the third rail.
Looks like they wanted the copper. Guess they dont realize that trying to get money for that will be difficult. Any facility that sees that kind of guage wire will be required to report it. They will have the drivers lisence and plates of that car/truck..and have video cameras running. You cant sell industrial copper lines like this without drawing attention.
Im sure they are regular customers and if they havnt been turned in before they arent likely to be for this
your comment shows you have never been to a metal recycler.
@@isaac827
I've recycled copper. Copper pipe and wiring scraps from a building project and old battery cables from a solar setup that I updated. I had to furnish photo ID and fill out a form with my address and identifying information.
I think that's the law in California. I doubt thieves are cutting cables in CA and then hauling them to a state where they can sell them incognito.
@@bobwallace9753 it is not like that in Australia, I was an electrician and used to trade in copper a lot, they are some of the shiftiest businesses in existence.
@@oscarjohnson9156
A rube? You obviously don't know what that word means.
Now. In California the law requires a positive identification and record of anyone selling copper to a recycling plant. Are there possibly crooked dealers of scrap metal? Don't color me surprised if there are.
That there were containers of scrap being shipped overseas means nothing. We commonly ship recycle from the US to other counties. The reason the price of copper reached the point it did a few years back was because China was in a building boom and was paying top dollar for copper.
Why would it take the other companies weeks up to make baths to replace simple cables?
And: punishment does nothing...the cables have to made way harder to cut + a silent alarm has to be released to the police when someone tries to cut a cable.
It wouldn't, Viking can't help but fanboy Tesla/Musk/China at every opportunity.
Fact: Minimal value in short lengths of stranded copper.
This has been happening to public rapid charge points where I live in the UK for over 2 years now - in some case, the same Pod Point and Instavolt chargers have been vandalised 7 times.
Considering the cost to replace each individual cable is between £1,500-£3,000, depending on the kW power rating of the charge unit, replacing them is a very costly endeavour for the charge point operators.
It's been illegal for scrap metal merchants to buy metals for cash in the UK since 2012, yet this issue continues to blight the charging network.
In my local area, I've been in regular contact with the local Council authorities and Police with regular reports on each of the 14 charge points where I live - at times, there have only been 4 out of those 14 functional - but absolutely nothing has changed.
I even sent a video, showing a guy handing the cut cable to his partner sat on a mobility scooter, over to the Council but, again, nothing happened.
Charge units need to be redesigned - so that the cable is protected in a locked cabinet / cage which only unlocks once the user's bank card has been swiped.
It's a scourge which needs dealing with.
They could also create some bait charging stations to catch the criminals. Or an armed Tesla bot standing by for security. There are some indoor charging stations being built as well where you can get food or drink while charging. Chargers right next to a restaurant seem less likely to get vandalized as well.
Not just Tesla, all the. Chargefox chargers in central Ballarat were vandalised recently- all the screens smashed in! Cameras definitely needed!
Cameras built into the charger for catching ICE vehicles blocking and security for the chargers would be a great start to stop this cable theft.
Have you seen the spot price of copper, silver and gold lately?
Shiny bright bare copper pays $4.20/lb
Copper: $4.88 per pound. It has gone up due to projections of a shortage. That causes copper mining and refining to be more profitable, so they just crank out more and the price goes back down. Silver is $32 per ounce. Silver has been as high as $50 in 1980 and 2011. Gold is about $2,400 per OZ, down about 13% so far this year.
People do it is abandoned buildings in the UK for copper or what ever
We had thieves break into a work compound once just to steal 10 meters of 1 inch copper water pipe.
That looks like vandalism and sabotage. If you cut the cable for the copper, you don't leave 2kgs of material on the charging station.
Maybe they could add a circuit into the cable, so if it's cut, it sets off an alarm and alerts Tesla/police.
I hope they will put a tracker in the chargeport part soon, at least in the destroyed ones.
Ah this is the USA. The theft of copper has caused more than one Darwin award type scenario
God forbid if criminals or terrorists are influenced to sabotage gas statrions. That's a big problem, given the amount of combustable petroleum which could burn or leak into the ground. Gas stations need more security, but in the USA, France, and other countries are basically unsupervised self-service and in areas close to businesses and residential areas.
In lots of European countries you have to take your own cable, which obviously avoids this problem.
Adding extra connectors in a 400 Amp circuit isn't terribly appealing, though. I had thought that some of the cables are liquid-cooled, which would have complicated things further, but from the photos it doesn't look like they are.
In Europe you need to bring your own cable if you want to use public chargers which provide 10 or 20 kW, i.e. for slow charging.
Fast charging with 100 - 250 kW or more always requires a cable which is permanently attached to the charger.
@@nicodo56and yet you plug it into your car so if it uses the same plug on both ends I don't see a problem
When the camera detects a cable cutter ,the power comes on.
I’m surprised the engineers at Tesla did not think of this when they conducted their failure mode effects analysis. Tampering is a standard failure mechanism that needs to be considered in any design. The charging station should easily be able to detect the cable. If the cable is not detected, sound an alarm and turn on a strobe light. You just need to bring attention to the charger being damaged. That will prevent theft.
If anyone can read the logo on the shirt or trousers of the people shown doing the installation/repair work that would likely be the contracted company (that were many) to do the repair work. It is unclear what percentage of the Tesla employees Musk fired where themselves doing installation/repair work in the field vs. coordinating the supply chain for the contractors actually doing the work.
The usual resolution for this sort of theft is to discover who is _buying_ the cables that has clearly been cut.
Revux is being mentioned everywhere - definitely a project to watch!
Copper from evs; platinum from catalytic converters; inflationary economic policies make metal theft lucrative.
No its drug addicts, period.
Funny how everyone turns a blind eye to the drug epidemic in America until it, personally, inconveniences them and then they call for more fences and punishment. Some of the drug pushers are driving Tesla’s and are probably complaining the loudest.
yep probably is in that part of California.

@@Anthony-dj4nd and no security to worry about
Didn’t Elon lay off/fire a lot of employees recently? Perhaps they’re now disgruntled former employees seeking revenge.
They should have a mandatory prison sentence of 1 year and $5000 fine to cut a charging cable at any charging facility.
Interesting, because it inconvenience EV owners the penalty should be higher than normal laws, which would be vandalism and robbery, just because it effects EV owners.
That’s all you get for attempted manslaughter these days so stealing some copper cable just comes under petty robbery laws and penalties.
And they have to lick a 9 volt battery 158 time.
Problem is that Tesla superchargers doesn't have CCTV kind of security
Replace with aluminum cables. Maybe thicker and stiffer for users, but not worth stealing..
Sigh, so tired of the malcontents in society…
Maybe they can switch aluminum and steel like high voltage transmissions lines. It is still worth something but a lot less than copper.
Stealing or destorying property is always a criminal offense. In these cases though; it isn't usually EV hating ; they are going after the copper cable to sell the copper. This is a predictable problem when you have unattended charging points. Charging points should have the security of an attendent for a long list of reasons ; the largest being to protect the people doing the charges and then their vehicles secondly and the charging point itself thirdly. It was unwise to put them in remote spots where there isn't someone there to report to police any problems or possibly intervene. In Oakland they are even stealing the traffic lights - security is a must.
The fact that the price of copper is up over 30% in the past few months lends credence to the Viking's theory.
Tesla should reengineer the chargers such that if the cables are tampered with, 400KW of power will be sent through them.
Nope. Super dumb. You can't create intentional hazards, even for criminals.
Personally I think it is about stealing copper.
Thieves have been stealing copper long before electric cars came along.
It's like cutting the air line on a Scuba tank. What is the end goal?
If you can find someone to take the cables it's highly profitable. Changing the cables is quick and easy. Any electrician can do it given there are replacement cables available. But that just means theyre available for more theft right away.
😂how did they attach cables with four screws so quickly. Meanwhile dealers lots littered with Cyber Trucks in need of repairs.
Metal thieves steal everything they can. Some examples are theft of bronze lamps in cemeteries, grounding cables from railway catenary masts or copper roofs and downpipes.
They are not stealing copper. If they were, then the cables would be cut higher up close to the plastic piece to maximize the amount of copper taken. This looks more like a comfy height for someone to use their cable loppers.
Two points.
If there's an ongoing problem then use security cameras and AI to alert authorities that a theft is underway.
In California in order to sell copper at a recycle site you have to furnish photo ID and fill out a form. That was put into place due to people stripping wiring and copper plumbing out of buildings.
Defund the Police results in no police show for unarmed theft .
@@mikewallace8087
Do you really think there was a movement or is a movement to defund the police? It's just MAGA-idiocy.
There is a valid argument to convert some officer positions to mental health trained experts who would deal with domestic violence and mental health crises. Some situations need a solution other than shooting.
Yes, a few times domestic violence and mental health crises can endanger the person doing the intervention. What likely makes sense is to send in a team of a trained mental health specialist (who probably has weapons training and may well be armed) and a "shooter-mentality' police officer.
Now, please try to crawl your way back from the deluded far right. Hate ain't a good way to live your life.
The saboteurs are idiots!! They should be grateful. The more electric cars on the road, the cheaper gas will be for them!
They dont need to have employes to fix it. They need contractors as they have. This thefts (not sabotage) will be more common in the future. Thats easier and safer compaired to steal from subway, tram trains etc
It’s a shame they didn’t make these cables retractable and accessible via the app to extend. I wonder if this happened when cars were first launched. Were they sabotaging tires, torching the tank to to ignite the fuel, removing the crank so you can’t turn over the engine? Curious.
Makes sense. Just Google the copper price and see how its gone mad in the last 2 to 3 months.
The fact that it's cut close to the charger housing indicates the thief's were trying to maximize the amount of copper stolen. Tesla should use this opportunity to add longer charging cables but they probably won't.
If people are sabotaging chargers for the copper wire, don’t spend it all in one place, my dearest
I guess they just need to make replacing parts on the superchargers easier. It's no different to any other vandalism... Maybe retract the cable until a credit card is entered?
Imagine walking into a petrol station and cutting the hoses on all the pumps. Come on Greenies catch up to your nemesis.
IIMO there are two basic kinds of EV vandals: 1) people stealing copper, etc. 2) people who perceive EV's as symbols of a privileged class of people.
I don't condone such activity, but it is really easy to see EV-owners as a particularly pretentious group who are causing our electricity prices in USA to go WAY up due to "peak demand pricing". Here in USA, local utilities buy electricity and sometimes have to pay hundreds of times the regular price per KWH during peak demand. That ripoff-scam gets blended into what we all pay. Every EV represents possible additional usage that triggers peak-demand pricing AND the people who can least afford it can't buy EV's either. USA's electricity market is a horrific scam, it is past time to GET RID OF local "utilities" all together. They are a relic of the distant past and all they do is add MAJOR cost to electricity and discourage change.
Time to do inductive charging with the charging plates embedded underneath the asphalt.
Tesla's service division maintains their superchargers. There were some layoffs, but they were not all let go like the 500 person team that designs and files permits for new supercharger installs.
Probably just removed for the copper in the cables Sam?

Well, on the bright side, at least they are recycling the copper. May even find its way back into your next Tesla.
There are not really many Tesla haters. There are Elon Musk haters. The one thing the Viking never talks about his hero Musk, is why so many people find him disgusting. Some of them might be interested in sabotaging the charging stations.
They could also have wireless charging as I have seen on other cars. Kind of like in Sweden that have electric car lanes that will charge your car while you drive down the road.
I suggest creating jobs, an overseer 24/7.
Ideally the charging customer would then have the option of paying cash.
This was a huge problem in Europe, a few years ago we had terrible disruption of railway traffic because copper thiefs stole cables that were running along the tracks, that caused lots of havoc and damage, and it happened to a few EV charging stations, we all need legislation that brings extreme jail sentences to such sabotage of public services, there should be a 10 year minimum jail sentence for that.
This could very well be gangs in part or majority. There is also a lot of organized shop lifting and theft of catalytic converters of ICE cars. We need cameras to record this stuff and prosecute. We also need better employment opportunities.
Lake of jobs is going to be an increasing problem as we continue to automate. We need a new solution. Possibly a universal basic income.
If they're actually taking the cables then it's theft.
That's right bright eyes , it is theft .
I’m waiting for them to put up like a gated charging system that will only open up with the key card and electric card detection
Presales have the highest returns, and Revux is the best one I’ve seen.
China has rolling blackouts. Copper thieves were a problem. Then the power company started periodically reenergizing the line.
Got a strong feeling Revux will go 100x once it hits Binance.
This is awful just waste of space people who don’t want to work for a living. Here in the UK copper theft is an issue they cut the train lines cable out so for days the trains are distrusted and we can’t get to work. I agree massive punishments or hand them to the public for whatever punishment we decide to hand out as the police just give them a cation and they are out stealing again a few days later! Tesla should put cameras in each charger at least that may deter them or at least some evidence for the police to use after it’s been done.
The people that are cutting the chargers should have mandatory five years in prison
Well, you would have to have hate crime ruling for that to stick. Otherwise is just methhead thievery, whether misdemeanor or felony.
@@TheHumanNacho some states require the theft must exceed 10,000 dollars to be grand theft.
@@mikewallace8087
I think a better prosecution strategy would be vandalism rather than theft. Vandalism covers replacement cost, repair labour and loss of business. Theft would look at the value of the items being stolen, and the scrap value of the cut cables is peanuts in comparison with the cost to put it all back together. I doubt the scrap value per cable would exceed 50 dollars, and could be much lower; meanwhile, the vandalism value could be a grand per cable.
If it’s for the copper wouldn’t they cut it as high up as they could and not leave a foot on each charger?
You can't leave expensive wiring just dangling around with no security on site . Not sure why the the cable is not on a retractable mechanism that is in a locked position until charging is activated many products like vacuum cleaners have retractable cables . Now Tesla may find it cheaper to just replace stolen cables . Many times they go for cheaper options but if your constantly replacing cut cables and even if replaced in a day I don't see it as profitable .
Tesla sales in Europe fall to a 15 month low 🥺
its only going to get worse. might have to go wireless
They caught someone who was doing this- an extreme ultra conservative. See any progress as extreme fear. E vehicles are seen as the end of America…. Very sad.
They strip the copper before they turn up at the meteal refinery ,they dont turn up with tesla stamped on the outside cable .Common guys thiefs are not stupid
This is rife in the UK as well, but all networks are being targeted.
Infuriating.
Why don't they have the cables in the car and then plug into the charging station. This way there is no cable on the chargers for them to cut.
Disaffected former Tesla Supercharger department employees?
I really doubt it- those folks will look for a future.
Doubtful, copper thieves are at the bottom of the criminal food chain. Fired employees wouldn't stoop that low.
California literally closing restaurant and stores due to crime
How about if they install the tesla charging stations next to or across from police stations?
This is not about Tesla at all. This is about the massive illegal immigration crisis and poverty.
Should add a cable loop that goes into a fragile (breakable) part of the handle - that when broken sets off some sort of alarm. This could then signal cable theft or vandalism - and attract attention to the site, or lights and Cameras - etc
Add a hatch with a bluetooth/Wifi lock to the charging station? (a bother, but still more convenient than the charging being out of commission)
They want the copper. The current copper price is very high.
Copper sells for $5 per pound. Here in OR, almost all beverage containers have a ten-cent deposit, even water bottles. The bottling companies get to keep unreturned deposits; (you would think they would go to the State but they don't.) The bottling companies (of course) made it a PITA to return the containers so many people just toss them in the recycling bin or the trash. That makes it easy for people to make a good, safe "living" by collecting them out of the trash. It keeps peeps out of trouble and gives them an easy way to earn their fentanyl money.
Predicting 100x gains for Revux post-launch on major exchanges.
We're still waiting for a video about Onvo. Not that I'm holding my breath on it :)
Its a simple solution only have sockets and car owner has cable to connect both ends. Copper is worth Dollars
Can't you just have a power point and plug your own cable in or have a locked door which is released from your keys?
The power cables are too valuable to have sitting there just waiting for thieves.
Jail is based on the value of the crime and you can't change it to suit each crime
The copium on this channel is amazing! If you leave that much copper lying around, it’s going to get knicked.
The world’s highest court dealing with the oceans issued an opinion Tuesday that excessive greenhouse gases are pollutants that cause irreversible harm to the marine environment and must be cut drastically. The 21 judges on the tribunal were unanimous and experts say it will lead to wide-ranging claims for damages against polluting nations. The stance taken by the tribunal, which is called the Oceans Court, affects how international and national courts address the growing dangers of climate change. The seas are vulnerable because the burning of fossil fuels releases greenhouse gases / carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, warming the world and causing a rise in sea levels by melting glaciers and ice sheets. Climate change also causes heating and acidification of ocean waters, which kills marine life and the food chain, among other dangers. The opinion issued Tuesday expanded the definition of marine pollution to greenhouse gases. Scientists say that protecting the ocean’s role on the planet is LONG overdue. Seas cover 70 percent of the earth’s surface and provide half the world’s oxygen. They absorb almost all of the excess heat generated by greenhouse gases and are warming MUCH faster than predicted, bringing more climatic changes.
This would never happen in Saudi Arabia.
